10 Cars That Buyers Are Willing to Pay Way Over MSRP For

by Gabrielle DeSantis

With the recent supply shortage issues, many dealerships nationwide have raised prices on car models that are in short supply. And just like any other business, the automotive industry works on a “supply and demand” model. This means that when certain models are in short supply, the demand for them goes way up.

According to Kelley Blue Book, this short supply for some models, followed by the large demand, has spurred dealers to mark up prices by as much as 12% over MSRP. Surprisingly, many car buyers have agreed to pay this hefty sum in order to get into the car they want. Here are 10 of those car models that buyers are willing to pay over MSRP for.

2021 BMW M3 and M4

Apparently, BMW buyers like the enlarged nostrils on the BMW M3 and M4 if they’re willing to pay over the $70,000 starting price for each. We can’t blame them considering both cars are powered by a twin-turbo, inline-six that produces 473 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

According to Car and Driver, the transmission exudes “satisfying shifts” and the engine has a smooth power delivery. Couple that with some agile handling, and you have yourself a true German sports coupe or sedan.

The Acura MDX is the best-selling three-row SUV of all time, according to MotorTrend. That being the case, it’s not too surprising that many buyers are willing to pay over $50,000 for one. The main reason the 2022 model is so popular is that the MDX was completely redesigned and now boasts a new look, new tech, and a refined engine. We even drove the 2022 MDX around California recently and appreciated its civilized ride and extensive practicality.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is a large, three-row SUV that can haul up to nine people and a lot of cargo. The SUV is powered by a 5.3-liter V8 engine and can even tow up to 8,300 pounds. The Tahoe comes with a two-wheel drivetrain as standard equipment, but a four-wheel drivetrain is available. With that kind of combination, we can see why buyers are willing to go above and beyond Tahoe’s $50,000-plus sticker price.

Another popular large SUV under the GM umbrella is the Cadillac Escalade. For 2021, the Escalade has been redesigned with a new independent rear suspension, new tech-savvy features, updated styling, and a new diesel engine. Apparently, these revisions are causing buyers to pay above the hefty entry price of around $77,000.

2021 Honda Civic Type R

What can be said about the Honda Civic Type R that hasn’t been said before? It’s a revelation in the automotive market and will most likely be considered a classic in the future. Especially since rumor has it that it’s going electric soon. Buyers are currently paying way above the $37,000 buy-in price and will likely continue to do so.

Who wouldn’t want a plug-hybrid Jeep Wrangler that does double duty as an off-road hauler and practical daily driver? Apparently, a lot of people really do, which is why they are eager to pay more than $2,000 over MSRP for one.

2021 Kia Telluride

The 2021 Kia Telluride sail above the rest in the segment with its unbelievable value. Considering the tech-rich features and well-appointed interior that this three-row vehicle has, it should be no surprise that buyers are still paying well over MSRP for one over a year after its initial debut.

As the Kia Telluride’s corporate cousin, the 2021 Hyundai Palisade exudes the same type of value, build quality, and capability. Buyers are still paying over 12% on top of the MSRP for one as they are in short supply over a year after it came out.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G63

Anyone looking for a “go anywhere, do anything” type of SUV will undoubtedly have the Mercedes-Benz G63 at the top of their dream car list. This military-grade SUV has withstood the test of time when it comes popularity and reliability, and apparently, its $156,000 price doesn’t affect too many buyers who are willing to pay more than that.

2021 Genesis GV80

If you want a well-dressed, well-appointed three-row SUV that’s unlike any other on the road, then the Genesis GV80 could work for you. However, it does start at around $50,000 and can go up to $72,000, but buyers don’t seem to care as many are paying way over the suggested pricing.
