3 Coolest Affordable 1990s Cars on Autotempest

by Gabrielle DeSantis

Autotempest is a classifieds aggregator for used cars. It sweeps eBay, Cars.com, Craigslist, and others, and collects all cars in one easy-to-navigate interface. Recent searches produce some interesting prospects, especially classics from the 1990s, including some V12s and one rare exotic that barely breaches affordability. These are a few 1990s cars on Autotempest that were too interesting to ignore.

Executive: 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC – $10,000

A rare 1991 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC coupe is first off the line and one of a few on Autotempest, and it’s for sale from Hemmings. The exterior is blue-black metallic, with a few slight idiosyncrasies and headlight wipers. A 5.5-liter V8 lies under the hood that sends 238 horsepower to the rear wheels, with just 164,492 miles on the odometer. North American 560SECs only came with 4-speed automatic transmissions. Few coupes were made, compared to the sedan’s production numbers, and although it’s not an AMG, the engine is all-aluminum and produces 287 lb-ft of torque.

Other noteworthy features include aluminum wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a fully independent suspension, and no rust visible. The mileage is relatively low for this near-perfect 1990s German classic.

Used Luxury: 1997 Bentley Turbo R – $15,100

Autotempest showed eBay just closed an auction for a 1997 Bentley Turbo R at $15,100. This particular specimen was painted green with a beige interior, and in almost immaculate condition save for its glaring “Salvage” title. 1997 Bentley Turbo Rs used a turbocharged 6.8-liter V8 for 296 horsepower. It had rear-wheel drive, weighed 5,401 pounds, and topped out at 150 mph. Like the Mercedes, it had only a four-speed automatic transmission. It also used a double-wishbone front suspension and seated five people comfortably.

Bentley Turbo Rs can be expensive to restore. Unfortunately, the R was the weakest in a short line of engine options, ending with the Turbo RT Mulliner which produced 420 horsepower. Either way, a Bentley Turbo R for $15,000 is still one of the coolest 1990s cars. Although this one is sold, Autotempest has a few more Bentleys to choose from.

Autotempest Exotic: 1995 Ferrari 456GT – $69,500

Hemmings currently has a beautiful Rosso Monza 1995 Ferrari 456GT with a black interior for sale at $69,500. With 41,116 miles and a clean title, the 456GT provides ample prestige at the same price as a new BMW M3. The 456GT uses a 5.5-liter V12, which sends 426 horsepower to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.

With a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds as tested by Car and Driver, it’s plenty fast. Of course, the 456GT isn’t the fastest Ferrari of the 1990s thanks to the F40. However, it’s an affordable exotic which is hard to argue with and grants a foot in the door to one of the most exclusive automakers on the planet. This one might not be on Autotempest for long.

The scale of used cars available in North America is vast. Autotempest alone has Alfa Romeos, old Jaguars, and even Lancias for sale just in California. If in the market for either a used commuter, sports car, or exotic car, the options aren’t nearly as limited as they might seem.
