“In a small yard you’re more likely to be turning around or navigating around obstacles more often,” explained Misha Kollontai, a senior test project leader who covers lawn mowers for Consumer Reports. “A walk-behind mower is more appropriate for such jobs than a tractor or riding mower. It’s easier to navigate.”

Fortunately, picking the best gas push mower for your small yard isn’t all that difficult. In fact, Consumer Reports has already done the heavy lifting and recently highlighted its picks for the best gas push mowers. At the top of its list is the 21-inch Honda HRN216PKA.

While the Honda HRN216PKA ($400) is among the priciest lawn mowers on Consumer Reports’ list, the organization found its mulching and bagging performance is Very Good. It’s also among the most reliable lawn mowers and earned an Excellent owner satisfaction rating.

Consumer Reports also highlighted the 21-inch Troy-Bilt TB 115 ($230) as one of the best gas push mowers. This gas push mower excels in tasks like side-discharging and handling. Consumer Reports also gave it a Very Good rating in terms of cutting evenness. And when it comes to reliability and owner satisfaction? This gas push mower earned high marks in both categories.

Honda dominates when it comes to the best self-propelled gas mowers

Say you would prefer a gas self-propelled lawn mower instead. If that’s the case, Consumer Reports says these three push lawn mowers are among the best gas push mowers: the Honda HRX217K6HZA, the Honda HRN216VKA, and the Toro Personal Pace Recycler 21465. 

The Honda HRX217K6HZA ($870) is on the more expensive side. However, Consumer Reports gave it Excellent ratings for mulching, bagging, evenness, and handling. The Honda HRN216VKA, on the other hand, earned Excellent ratings in mulching, cutting evenness, and handling. Priced at $629, the Honda HRX217K6HZA is also considered a Consumer Reports’ Best Buy. 

As for the Toro Personal Pace Recycler 21465? This self-propelled gas mower will have you spending roughly $399. This particular mower earned Excellent ratings in side discharging, mulching, and cutting evenness. It also earned Very Good ratings in bagging and handling. The only downside to this push lawn mower is that it can be noisy.

Last but certainly not least is the Toro Timemaster 21199, which Consumer Reports tapped as the best wide-deck self-propelled mower. This wide-deck self-propelled lawn mower boasts a 30-inch cutting deck which Consumer Reports says will have you cutting your grass in about two-thirds of the time it takes with a regular push mower.

That’s not the only reason Consumer Reports highlighted it as one of the best gas push mowers either. The Toro Timemaster 21199 also earned Excellent ratings in lawn care tasks like bagging and cutting evenness. It also earned Very Good ratings in side discharging, mulching, and handling. Consumer Reports added that it earned an Excellent owner satisfaction rating.
