Aston Martin DB5 Stars In ‘No Time To Die’ Trailer

by Gabrielle DeSantis

Aston Martin and James Bond have been a pair of iconic British brands for decades and are synonymous. With the 25th Bond film, No Time To Die, set to hit theaters in the 2021 holiday season, there are bound to be some callbacks to the early days of the Aston Martin and James Bond partnership.

One such reference is made front and center in the latest trailer for No Time To Die, which features an action-packed scene with Daniel Craig’s Bond facing off against a small army of baddies. Bond’s only weapon: a 1964 Aston Martin DB5. Did James Bond simply run all the bad guys over? No, he dispatched them in a much cooler way.

Bond’s DB5 originally appeared in the 1964 film Goldfinger in which the late, great Sean Connery played the starring role. In the movie, Bond is given the Aston Martin DB5 by the character “Q.” Q reveals to bond that the DB5 is packed full of gadgets and hidden weapons that he can deploy against his enemies.

The Aston Martin DB5 was equipped with everything from a smokescreen emitter, oil slick squirters, a hidden rear bullet shield, tire puncturing caltrops that could deploy at the push of a button and the hilarious passenger ejector seat. James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 became an instant icon after that film and has made brief cameos in subsequent films. However, it appears that in No Time To Die, the DB5 will return for a starring role, even if it is just for one scene.

The scene we mentioned earlier seems to allude to a much longer sequence in which Bond will face off against a bunch of enemies with the DB5 to protect him. As all the baddies open fire on the Aston Martin and certain doom seems imminent, Bond flips a switch, deploys hidden machine guns in the headlights, and cleans house in a bullet-filled smokey donut maneuver.

Sure, it is a gratuitous scene, but it is just the kind of over-the-top action that fans of James Bond films want to see. The trailer also hints at appearances by some of the current models in Aston Martin’s lineup, but if we’re honest, we really hope that the lion’s share of the car scenes is given to the Aston Martin DB5.

In many ways, the film No Time To Die marks a transitional phase for the James Bond saga. As previously mentioned, this film is the 25th in the franchise, and it is also the last time that Daniel Craig is expected to play the starring role.

At the same time, there is a major movement in the automotive industry toward electric vehicles. In an interview with Automotive News Europe, Aston Martin CEO Tobias Moers said that the company plans to go “full electric” in the future.

At the same time, it is unlikely that Aston Martin and James Bond will end their cross-promotional relationship. Does that mean Bonds’s next car will be a new Aston Martin EV supercar? We wouldn’t rule it out.

If we’re right, we will savor what could be the last James Bond film to feature a Bond car with a combustion engine when No Time To Die releases in late 2021.
