** NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board)

We have played this game before. And we have won. Now it’s time to play it once more and we need your support!

The NTSB urged 17 automakers to install intelligent speed-assistance technology in all new vehicles that, at a minimum, warns a driver when the vehicle is speeding.

The National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) is an independent review agency in the federal government. They're the group which get called when a plane crashes, or a train goes off the rails, or, in this particular case, when a speeding car crashes into a minivan in North Las Vegas and nine people die from this one wreck alone, as happened in 2022. After reviewing that wreck, the NTSB recommends that our cars warn us, inhibit us, or prevent us from speeding.

The NTSB said on Tuesday that the 2022 North Las Vegas crash "highlights [the] need for intelligent speed assistance technology and countermeasures including interlock program for repeat speeding offenders." What is intelligent speed assistance technology? Here is the clarification, direct from the NTSB press release:

Intelligent speed assistance technology, or ISA, uses a car’s GPS location compared with a database of posted speed limits and its onboard cameras to help ensure safe and legal speeds. Passive ISA systems warn a driver when the vehicle exceeds the speed limit through visual, sound, or haptic alerts, and the driver is responsible for slowing the car. Active systems include mechanisms that make it more difficult, but not impossible, to increase the speed of a vehicle above the posted speed limit and those that electronically limit the speed of the vehicle to fully prevent drivers from exceeding the speed limit.

It is not the NTSB's role to make laws or create mandates. It is not a policy-making body. It is an agency that reviews transportation disasters, figures out how they happened, and makes recommendations on how to keep them from happening.

As the NTSB notes, some 12,330 people died in speeding-related crashes in 2021 alone, roughly a third of all traffic deaths in the U.S. What is abundantly clear is that something needs to change, and we all know that relying on cops to pull people over isn't working for anybody.

As a result of the investigation, the NTSB is issuing eight new and one reiterated recommendation to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one new recommendation to states, and one new recommendation to manufacturers:

Add this to the kill switch, and the government and depart of transportation will control all your driving. Here is a better idea: teach people to be better and safer drivers.

Is The 2023 Toyota GR Corolla Even Better Than Expected? I was skeptical but it was a blast to drive.
It has a spunky three-cylinder powertrain, tight handling, and adaptive all-wheel drive. This delivers good performance. The GR Corolla sets the bar high for sport-compact hatchbacks.

Here are the specs:
* 300-hp turbocharged three-cylinder engine / Torque: 273 lb-ft
* Six-speed manual is the only available transmission,
* rev-match feature is standard.
* multi-mode all-wheel-drive system,
* sport-tuned suspension
* Circuit Edition comes standard with front and rear limited-slip differentials,
* GR-Four system allows the driver to choose among different power-distribution modes, starting with a 60/40 front-to-rear split for everyday driving to up to 30/70 to allow for drifting antics; a 50/50 split option is intended to provide maximum traction for racing.
* 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway
* 0 - 60 MPH = 4.9 seconds
* Top Speed (gov ltd): 143 mph
* Brakes, F/R: 14.0-in / 11.7-in
* Tires: Michelin Pilot Sport 4

If the GR Circuit edition isn’t enough the Morizo Edition promises an even higher level of excitement but at the cost of practicality; Toyota has removed the rear seat, the rear speakers, and even the hatchback-mounted window wiper to save as much weight as possible. Less weight equals quicker lap times.

* Morizo Edition trim which was available last year.
* The Big wing makes this car stand out in the crowd
* Curb Weight: 3269 lb

Core at $37,195
Premium - $41,015
Circuit Edition - $45,835
Morizo- $49,900

Wait, I thought self-driving cars were about safer driving. But there is more. Driverless vehicles promise a future with less congestion and pollution, fewer accidents resulting from human error and better mobility for people with disabilities, supporters say. But every now and then, one of the cars runs into trouble in a way that casts a bit of doubt on that bold vision.

How about this one, last month, in San Francisco, where a driverless car somehow drove into a city paving project and got stuck in wet concrete. I’m not joking. It’s front wheel were actually stuck in the concrete as worker stood by shocked. Some of the people watching stated, “I was kind of pleased to see this because it illustrates how creepy and weird the whole driverless car thing is to me.”

The incident happened just days after California regulators agreed to expand driverless taxi services in San Francisco, despite the safety concerns of local officials and community activists. In a 3-to-1 vote last week, the California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates self-driving cars in the state, gave Cruise and Waymo permission to offer paid rides anytime during the day, throughout the city.

Though driverless cars have not been blamed for any serious injuries or crashes in San Francisco, they have been involved in several jarring episodes. Don’t forget the incident where a Waymo vehicle killed someone crossing the street in Arizona 2 years ago. Other situations were a mess too. As many as 10 Cruise driverless cars stopped working near a music festival in San Francisco’s North Beach, causing traffic to back up.

Driverless-car companies have strongly defended their safety records. It is foolish to expect driverless cars to operate perfectly. The cars, like any new technology that relies on machine learning, need to operate in real-world conditions to improve. However, nothing replaces a human paying attention on the street and making immediate decisions.

As I have been saying, there are huge factors that will stop self driving or autonomous (AV) cars in our lifetime. AV’s can be hacked. There have been reports of researchers "hacking" cars by simply putting stickers on typical street signs. The researchers found that they can exploit vulnerabilities in the car's visual classifying system. This made a stop sign look like a 45-mile-per-hour sign with just the use of some simple-to-make stickers. Hackers can also break-in to the grid and that would be a disaster.

Ethical issues are an issue. Cars come with "ethical issues"--just like anything created by human beings. When we drive, we make 1000s of mini-decisions. Researchers are trying to help the cars figure out what to do when it is making these ethical decisions. For instance, should the car save a driver or the four kids crossing the street. The other ethical issues with autonomous cars, include privacy issues and liability concerns.

Profit matters over safety. The companies are thinking about profit--not your safety. Sure, they may lower accidents and reduce emissions, but the real reason companies are doing this is for profit. There's still a bunch of technological, ethical, and regulatory issues that have not yet been ironed out. Accidents and other issues are still a huge problem, particularly on bridges, in bad weather, in city traffic, and in high-speed circumstances. Weather is a huge factor especially rain and snow.

Communication breaks down. While much of driving is paying attention and avoiding obstacles, a large part of driving is communicating with other cars. Turn signals and brake lights show your intentions to other drivers, you may need to "wave" at someone to go ahead at a stop. Automated cars are still struggling to communicate with each other and that is a serious issue.

Drivers like driver assistance features to keep them safer on the road, however, recent studies have shown that drivers want to control their vehicles and not get into a self driving car especially one without pedal and a steering wheel. We are far, far away from self driving cars becoming main stream. We will be watching and reporting as this develops.

Are you interested in self-driving cars? What are your thoughts?
