The Mini Cooper is a popular car for many reasons. Even people who don’t know much about cars recognize this model’s unique profile and distinctive design. Plus, every Cooper model year is fun to drive. So there’s a lot to like. But the Mini Cooper’s price might give some shoppers pause.

This zippy car’s build quality and premium status under the BMW Group command a hefty price tag. And if you want an engine with more kick, you’ll pay even more for a Mini Cooper. So if the price is a deal-breaker and you’re looking for a good alternative, consider a similar vehicle from Kia.

Give the 2021 Kia Soul a look

Recently, U.S. News published a list of the 10 best alternatives to the 2021 Mini Cooper. And one of those vehicles is the 2021 Kia Soul.

According to the folks at U.S. News, the 2021 Kia Soul is among the best subcompact SUVs available today. They liked it so much they named it their 2021 best subcompact SUV for the money. With an impressive balance of value and quality, the Soul offers plenty of room and a slew of great features.

Like the Mini Cooper, the 2021 Kia Soul boasts a distinct, funky vibe. You know it when you see it, and it’s roomy inside. The Soul, however, is much more affordable.

With the Soul, you can choose between two four-cylinder engines — the turbocharged version harnesses 201 hp. There’s also an electric version coming soon. It’s a fun ride, with driving dynamics to match its unorthodox styling and personality. It even earned an Editor’s Choice award from Car and Driver.

The Soul’s pros and cons

Does the Kia Soul have anything to offer aside from quirky looks, lots of room, and a reasonable price? Yes. The latest Kia, redesigned in 2020, has plenty of space for adult passengers and a generous amount of cargo room.

The cabin has a pleasing vibe and a user-friendly infotainment system. Also, expect an excellent warranty with 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage. Overall, it has a limited warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The 2021 Kia Soul also boasts an above-average predicted reliability rating.

It might not be as quick or precise as the Mini Cooper, but its driving experience is far from lacking. And it starts at almost $5,000 less than the Mini.

The Soul also might not be as fuel-efficient as some of its top rivals. Plus, you can’t get all-wheel drive, it lacks some popular driver-assist features, and the ground clearance is limited.

It’s still a good alternative to the Mini Cooper

Despite its flaw, the Kia Soul offers many attractive features, including a new rear occupant alert in the 2021 model. The system lets the driver know through visual and audio cues and can even send texts warning the driver that someone is in the backseat.

Also, Kia added new shock valves to enhance the ride of the mid-range X-Line and GT-Line models. In addition, a key fob with integrated remote start capability now comes standard on the EX and the top-trim Turbo models.

The X-Line and GT-Line offer two great versions of an already eccentric-looking body, and they cost the same. The GT-Line presents a sportier façade complete with body-colored trim, flashy red exterior accents, and a distinct wheel design. The X-Line is styled more aggressively with Undercover Green paint and black plastic cladding.

Both models offer plenty of standard driver-assist features. They include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and more.

The 2021 Kia Soul may not be as fast or dynamic as the Mini Cooper, but it’s anything but boring. Plus, it’s roomy, comfortable, and unique-looking. With a long list of standard features, the Soul is a viable alternative to the Cooper.

The Toyota Tundra is one of the most popular pickup trucks ever made. People love them. However, it has been a while since Toyota updated them in a significant way. This next-generation Toyota Tundra is long overdue, but it’s coming in hot with two new engine options. Some Toyota fans just figured we’d have that old 5.7-liter V8 for the rest of time.

At long last, we finally get new engines for the Toyota Tundra

According to CarBuzz, there is no hard date set yet for the next-gen Toyota Tundra, but sources suggest that the new Tundra could be unveiled as soon as this month.

We are still waiting for more details. Toyota keeps a pretty tight lip on the whole thing, but we do have a few little nuggets of information to tide us over until the launch.

The New Toyota Tundra should actually be different this time

In a conversation with MotorTrend, Toyota’s executive vice president of sales for North America, Bob Carter, confirmed the next Tundra would have two engine options. The Toyota Tundra has had the one and only engine option for over a decade. While that might seem like a bad thing, the one engine it had was the legendary 5.7-liter V8. This engine may be old and outdated, but it is as solid as they come.

Toyota hasn’t said what the two new engines will be yet, but it did say that the 5.7-liter will not be one of them. Some Toyota people will certainly mourn the loss of this incredibly sturdy engine, but the folks at Toyota seem pretty confident that customers will enjoy the new power plants.

Honestly, the 5.7-liter V8 getting the ax shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. It is old, inefficient, and out of touch. That being said, supposedly, the new is a “core powertrain that’s substantially more powerful in terms of horsepower and torque than the current V8,” according to Carter.

How much power does the Toyota Tundra make?

The outgoing V8 makes a whopping 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. Toyota still hasn’t said whether the new base engine would stay a V8 or drop down to something like a twin-turbo V6. Although, with the current trend of smaller, turbocharged engines like the base engine of the Ford Bronco, The Tundra will likely go for the V6.

Even more exciting than the new base engine is the new optional power plant. According to the Toyota Executive, the new optional Toyota Tundra engine will “blow you away.” As we mentioned, Toyota still hasn’t given any details on this new engine, but it sounds pretty exciting. The going theory is that this new Toyota Tundra engine will likely get some help from an electric motor, much like the new Ford F-150 Hybrid. There are even some rumblings of a hydrogen powertrain.

It is time for the Tundra to retake the throne

At this point, there is still plenty of speculation surrounding these new Toyota engines. Honestly, Toyota couldn’t have picked a better time to update the Tundra. With Ford’s F-150 hybrid and F-150 Lightning, alongside the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T, the truck marketplace is getting more competitive than ever.

People love Toyota trucks, but the lack of updates and modern powertrains has really hurt them over the years. Maybe this next-generation Toyota Tundra can turn all that around.

Chinese automaker BYD says they’re going to “revolutionize” the electric school bus. You might be wondering, isn’t the school bus already revolutionized just by being a huge EV? Apparently not, because BYD is making moves that will make the electric school bus even more cutting edge than the fact that it’s battery powered.

How will the electric school bus be revolutionized?

BYD, which is backed by Warren Buffet, says that their forthcoming electric school school bus will be battery operated and lead the school busses in safety and style. They will have a range of 155 miles, which isn’t too bad for a school bus that will likely spend a lot of its time transporting kids around town or to nearby field trips.

What kind of battery allows a vehicle that size to travel such a distance on a single charge? It’s a lithium iron phosphate battery. BYD says this is the safest electric vehicle battery. Also, BYD says that this will cut fuel and maintenance costs by 60%, which would be great for most schools already tight budgets.

The revolutionized school busses will be good for schools, too. There will be three size options for these electric school busses: 35, 38 and forty feet. The largest of these options will be able to hold 84 students and the busses will have an ADA lift gate.

BYD says that their busses will not only allow for bi-directional charging, but it will be the norm. The busses will be charged at night, when the demand for electricity is low. During the day, BYD’s electric school busses will be able to send clean energy back into the schools.

Will the electric school busses be safe?

Stella Li, president of BYD North America, said, “We are raising the bar for design, innovation, range and quality, giving parents peace of mind knowing their children are benefitting from the safest school bus anywhere.”

BYD electric school busses will have electronic stability control, collision avoidance, and pedestrian and cyclist detection when the electric school busses are traveling at low speeds.

Also, BYD electric school busses will use their trademarked Predictive Stop Arm. This will monitor traffic and tell students if it is not safe to cross the street.

In addition, the revolutionized electric school busses can come with three-point lap-shoulder belts. They can also come with integrated child seats and portable restraints, which is much more than many standard school busses have. BYD says that these safety features will cut down on bullying and also keep the bus driver from being distracted.

As an added bonus, the revolutionized electric school busses will have plenty of storage space and be comfortable for the driver. The driver’s seat will be more comfortable, thanks to input from thousands of bus drivers. The BYD electric school busses will make it easy for the driver to see the road as well as to reach control systems.

More and more school districts are moving toward electric busses. While standard diesel busses are still the norm, more electric school busses are making their way onto the streets, and advancements like this will certainly only help things along.

OK, let’s be real. For most of us, it’s never been that easy to buy a car. The car buying process is painstaking, and the investment can be daunting. But lately, it’s getting harder to find new or used cars on lots, because there are some supply chain issues that are affecting things down the line.

Car buying can be fun and exciting. In fact, it should be. However, with all these wild headlines about car shortages, are cars the new toilet paper crisis?

“The reopening economy is demanding so much, it’s causing supply chain issues for just about everything in our lives.”

Buying a new or used car

Dealers are reaching out to people for their used cars. Buyers looking for anything pretty specific might end up forced to settle on something that’s not quite exactly what they want. Furthermore, all the intensity that the media is placing on the growing shortage could mean car shoppers will begin “panic buying.”

Most remember the toilet paper crisis that struck supermarket shelves across the nation last spring. There were lines to buy toilet paper. For nearly a year afterward, toilet paper became such a commodity that some places put a limit on toilet paper buying to one per person.

If people take to car buying in a frenzy because they are worried about the looming shortage, could that mean an industry crisis? Will we run out of cars and even trade-ins? Or will dealers instate new limits on the quantity of new cars, trucks, or SUVs people can buy in one go?

A car buying crisis

Things are opening back up. The economy is picking up a little steam now as mandates are lifted and vaccines are injected. People are shopping more, and that means the auto industry is also experiencing an influx in shoppers looking to purchase a car.

According to NBC, “Demand is driving up prices for airfare, housing, rideshare and cars.”

At this point, it’s hard to say exactly how dramatic things will get. NBC News shares data that shows “consumers could see 1.2 million fewer new cars built this year.”

That’s quite a dip in inventory. Rising demand could cause a car buying crisis. However, it’s important to remember that this isn’t the only year to buy a car. While there are many enticing models out there, it might be wise for those who can to just wait until later down the line.

After some time when the dust is allowed to settle, consumers may find themselves in a much more inviting automotive market. In addition, plants and factories should have actually had the time to gear back up into full production.

The global shortage of computer chips has greatly affected the production of new cars, trucks, and SUVs. NBC tells readers that “Work from home demand for laptops and monitors led semiconductor makers to shift from making chips for vehicles to personal electronics.”

If car shoppers start reading the news, which they likely already do, things could end up in crisis. Only this time, it won’t be a toilet paper crisis. Rather, consumer could run into problems when buying a new or used car.

Inventory struggles

Because of the lack of inventory for new cars and closed economy, there are fewer trade-ins in months of late. That means that not only are there inventory struggles with new cars, but used models as well.

Dealerships across the nation are having trouble with inventory. Buying a new car isn’t as simple as merely choosing what you want anymore. Car, truck, and SUV buyers may find that what they want simply isn’t available.

Due to this issue, there are fewer trade ins. With inventory so tight that “cars are being sold even bore they get off the delivery truck.” Fewer new car sales means not as many trade ins. Thus, both new and used cars are affected by the supply chain problems.

Car buying is a nationwide issue

This is an issue that’s not localized. In fact, CARFAX sees a pattern across the country. Analysts are saying that inventory issues could lead to high markups and spikes for vehicle pricing. The time that factories were shut down and not producing vehicles last year has taken a lasting toll on the amount of new cars on dealership lots.

“The last few months we’re seeing life return to normal, if you will. People are anxious to get back to whatever that normal is for them,” said Emilie Voss with CARFAX.

What can consumers do to ease the strain?

Few things can go back to normal as simple as removing a mask. Two months or more of zero production is a difficult rebound. One that, quite frankly, doesn’t appear to be successful so far.

So instead of rushing out and panic buying a new or used car, it might be best to just wait till things mellow out. Car buying could become the next toilet paper crisis. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to. At least, however, if buyers do need a new car, truck, or SUV right now they are likely to get a good value for their trade-in due to the demand.
