The third-generation Mazda RX-7 was arguably one of the most beautiful cars ever produced. Its elegantly sleek styling was backed up by a potent twin-turbo rotary engine and superb handling characteristics. The only issue is that rotary engines were never known to be reliable.

How do you make a third-generation RX-7 more reliable? Simple! You conduct a really expensive engine swap like this YouTuber did.

Engine swapping a Mazda RX-7 can cost a pretty penny

Many Mazda RX-7 enthusiasts – or just Mazda enthusiasts in general – would consider swapping anything other than a stock 13B rotary engine into the RX-7 blasphemy, but one YouTuber decided to go against the grain. Ben, from the YouTube channel Gears and Gasoline, recently detailed how much it cost him to build a third-generation Mazda RX-7 with a Honda K20 swap (from an Acura RSX), and the results weren’t pretty.

For starters, Ben said he purchased the Mazda RX-7 (FD chassis) as a rolling shell with the K20Z engine swap already in it. The engine was already mated to a stock Honda S2000 six-speed manual transmission, so that took a lot of the legwork out of the swap from the get-go. However, in total, the car itself cost him a whopping $16,000.

But that made us wonder: How much would it cost to swap the K20 engine and S2000 transmission into an FD RX-7 empty shell?

Finding an RX-7 shell could be the hardest part

Ben was pretty lucky that he found the RX-7 shell with the K20 engine swap already in it. If you’re planning to take on a project car endeavor like this, then you’ll need to find a 93-95 Mazda RX-7 shell first. Doing so can be tricky, considering the market for these cars has risen a lot in the past decade, and finding an actual shell can be tough as well.

However, if you happen to find one, then you can expect to pay anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 depending on the car’s condition. We weren’t very lucky in our nationwide search for one using Auto Tempest, however, we did find a couple of complete 1995 RX-7’s selling for around $25,000. Just remember, this step could take a while.

Sourcing a K20 swap is easier but still pricey

Next, if you’re able to find an FD RX-7 as a project car, or if you already have one, then you will need to find a Honda K20 engine to swap into it. Fortunately, these engines are prevalent all over eBay and Craigslist, so finding one won’t be too hard.

As far as cost goes, depending on which engine go with, it could cost you anywhere between $1,000 and $2,000 for the engine alone and another $1,000 for the S2000 manual transmission. Then there’s the cost of mounting and wiring everything to the chassis.

For this type of swap, you’ll need a custom adapter to mount the transmission, which will cost around $300, in addition to a custom flywheel that costs around $600. And we haven’t even gotten to all the wiring, custom axles, and driveshaft yet.

All of that hardware could easily cost another few thousand dollars depending on who does the work for you. Ultimately, while the engine swap will cost a lot of money and effort, it could eventually be worth it.

Why would anyone want to swap a K20 engine into an RX-7?

Reliability is at the top of the list when it comes to doing this engine swap. According to Ben from Gears and Gasoline, swapping a Honda engine into an RX-7 should lead to fewer repair and maintenance costs down the road to the point where the owner might actually break even with the initial cost of the swap. Although, it could take a really long time to make the cost of entry worth it.

Ultimately, Ben’s K20 engine project cost over $60,000 in total, with $20,000 of the cost going to labor. Keep in mind that his project included a whole turbocharger system, which made the swap produce over 400 hp. But if you’re planning to undergo this type of project yourself, you could possibly complete it for cheaper, albeit not by much.

Superconductor shortages have hit the Ford and the automotive industry hard. Few automakers have been as deeply affected as Ford. The brand has cut more models from production than any other automaker. Now, Ford has announced it will be raising prices on 11 models and cutting all buyer incentives. This announcement comes just days after buyer incentives had been raised.

Ford cuts incentives days after raising them

To drum up sales, Ford recently doubled its Retail Order Incentive Program from $500 to $1000. This program rewards buyers for ordering out-of-stock vehicles with a cash-back offer. The incentive was retroactive, covering all new orders placed after April first, 2021.

The Retail Order Incentive Program essentially paid Ford customers for their patience. How long that patience will have to extend is largely anyone’s guess. Some industry experts have estimated that the chip shortage will take years to resolve fully. Others have been more optimistic and feel the market my normalize early next year. This promotion was slated to last through July sixth.

In a dealer letter delivered June second, Ford announced the end of nearly every buyer incentive program. A selection of APR offerings, all incentives based on trim level, package or series, FMCC Bonus Cash, Select Inventory Cash, Retail Bonus Cash, Retail Customer Cash, and more were canceled, effective immediately. These incentives will be replaced with a simplified and more consistent program, but further details have yet to be released.

Prices rise on a list of models

Ford has announced the details of price increases on most of its models. The Edge will go up $500 in price on all trim levels. All trim levels of EcoSPort will see a $400 increase. The Escape’s S trim will go up $670. Mustang Mach 1 buyers will see a $680 rise. Ford Bronco Sport pricing will go up $540 on both the Outer Banks and Badlands trim levels.

All trim levels of Explorer will see a $250 increase in price. The Expedition will increase $600 on all trim levels. The Ford Ranger will increase by $250 on all trims, as will the Super Duty. The Transit and Transit Connect will both go up $250 on all trim levels as well.

Several Lincoln models will receive similar price hikes. The greatest increase will hit the 2022 Lincoln Aviator Reserve, which will see a $905 increase. Price increases will likely look similar to those applied to specific Ford models and follow similar patterns.

New incentives will focus on trade-ins

Moving forward, Ford will be focusing its incentive efforts on Trade-in Assistance Incentive. This program focuses on getting Ford buyers the most trade-in value toward the purchase price of certain 2021 F-150, Ranger, Mustang, Expedition, Edge, Explorer, Bronco Sport, Escape, and EcoSport models.

Chip shortages have had a catastrophic effect on new car inventories. Many companies have been forced to slash production, Ford among them. Some estimate the brand may cut production up to 50% by the end of the year. These sudden changes to existing Ford incentive programs are a response to these dire shortages. It’s likely incentive programs will become more robust when the chip shortage ends.

Hover lawn mowers sound like futuristic contraptions, but they’ve been around for decades and are often a good choice for yards that are a little more challenging to mow. Choosing a mower suited to your lawn will make life infinitely easier when it comes to lawn maintenance. Here’s everything you need to know to decide whether a hover mower is the right choice for you.

What is a hover lawn mower?

According to Flymo, a hover lawn mower creates a cushion of air between itself and the grass. This means hover mowers can move in every direction rather than back and forth in a straight line. This extra maneuverability is ideal for smaller or oddly shaped yards because it’s easier to reach nooks and crannies with this type of mower.

Hover mowers are also ideal for lawns on slopes. This type of mower tends to be much easier to move up and down hills due to the cushion of air underneath it.

However, hover mowers have some downsides, too. Though they’re typically fairly easy to maneuver, hover mowers can sometimes pose a challenge for people with limited upper body strength. They need to be swung from side to side to function properly, which requires different muscles than those needed to push a lawnmower straight forward.

The other main downside of hover mowers is aesthetics. Flymo points out that hover mowers can’t leave distinctive stripes on your lawn because they don’t have a rear roller to flatten the grass as you mow. So if you want these stripes on your lawn, don’t use a hover mower.

The differences between hover and rotary mowers

Hover and rotary mowers are similar in that they both use a rotating cutting deck to mow the grass. However, while a cushion of air elevates hover mowers, rotary mowers have wheels. This means they can be moved only forward and backward, never from side to side.

According to Yard Surfer, rotary mowers are typically a better choice if you have a much larger yard, as they can offer higher amounts of horsepower. While their larger motors make rotary mowers heavier than hover mowers, this may be worth it to people with larger lawns that require a more powerful trim.

What model hover mower should you get?

If you think a hover mower is the best choice for your lawn, Yard Surfer has several recommendations for the best models you can purchase. Most highly recommended is the Sun Joe MJ-HVR12E, which provides 10 amps of power and is very lightweight. Reviewers praise its affordability, ergonomic construction, and ease of use but are less impressed with its short electric cord. If you have a tiny yard, though, this isn’t likely to be a significant problem.

Another option is the Air Force Honda Hover Mower, which Yard Surfer states is “an ideal choice for someone who wants a small machine that delivers superior performance.” It has an adjustable cutting height, but it’s also heavier than many of its competitors.

Finally, you might consider the California Trimmer RC190. This option has a 19-inch hub, giving it a wider cutting range. It’s also available with two engine choices, one from Honda and one from Briggs & Stratton. However, users occasionally find that this option doesn’t work as well on wet grass.

Although hover lawn mowers don’t always offer the same amount of power as their rotary counterparts, they still offer a range of other benefits. So if you have a small yard and are looking for something compact, lightweight, and maneuverable, a hover mower is worth considering.

Comedian Kevin Hart is thinning his collection of outrageous vehicles. His vintage 1977 Ford Bronco is one getting culled, and it hits the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas this weekend. Not only is the Bronco customized like no other but it was even part of Jay Leno’s Garage CNBC show premiere promo.

The Kevin Hart Bronco has been upgraded and updated in many ways

The Bronco has been upgraded and updated in many ways. For starters, it is powered by a built fuel-injected 5.0-liter Ford small block. The FI intake manifold comes right off of a GT40. Crane electronic ignition, Ardent Performance custom exhaust with MagnaFlow mufflers, and a custom aluminum radiator as just some of the goodies under the hood.

An Optima battery is now hidden under the passenger front seat as opposed to the radiator core support as it is on a stock Bronco. A three-speed automatic transmission and Dana twin-stick transfer case power the four wheels.

For the modified suspension a lift kit is suspended with King coil-over shocks. The 35-inch Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tires wrap 17-inch Fuel wheels in black with red accents. The matching spare gets its own special carrier that swings away to access the rear.

Firmer bushings and power steering were additions to the build. A Wilwood master cylinder combines with power disc brakes at all four corners. Overall, the Hart Bronco is a high-riding resto-mod off-roader that looks equally at home blasting down a highway.

Inside there is black leather that contrasts nicely with the bright red sheet metal. Stitching matches that red. Now there are custom reclining bucket seats along with a matching back bench, door panels, dash, and roll bar pads.

A tilt steering column has been added, topped off with a three-spoke steering wheel. Black billet aluminum Lokar brake and accelerator pads finish things off. The tube roll cage and three-point seatbelts add safety. A custom console was built featuring a Lokar shifter.

Audio is from a Bluetooth Kenwood head unit featuring USB and Pandora. It powers four JL Audio speakers along with a 10-inch subwoofer and Alpine amplifier all centered in a custom-built panel. Not shown is a Bestop soft-top also in black.

Contrasting black accents are seen throughout Hart’s Bronco

In front, a 9,500 lb Warn winch is bookended by two Rigid LED pods. There is another pod in the rear. For contrast, the LED headlights, Bronco Sport badges, window cranks, locks, door handles, rearview mirror, side mirrors, and fender flares are all painted black.

Barrett Jackson says the Bronco has a mere 700 miles on it. Either Hart didn’t like driving it much or didn’t have time to. Whether one or the other, it is virtually a brand new build.

The auction starts Jun 17-19 in Las Vegas. Estimates for the gavel price are around $57,000. You couldn’t have this Bronco built for twice that price.
