Car manufacturers are making huge strides in safety these days. All-around safety has improved, and the amount of extra safety features offered have increased. Still, car shoppers have to sort through the safety features the car they’re looking at comes with. Let’s look at 10 midsize luxury SUVs for 2021 that come standard with all of the advanced safety systems that Consumer Reports says are key in new cars.

What advanced safety systems are important?

Consumer Reports says that car shoppers should look for forward collision warning, which detects a potential collision and alerts the driver. Braking systems are also important: automatic emergency braking, city automatic braking and high-speed automatic emergency braking are also advanced safety systems that will keep you and your passengers safer. Pedestrian detection warns drivers about pedestrians in the path of the car.

Cars, vans and SUVs can come with adaptive cruise control, which maintains a safe distance between vehicles. Lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance and lane centering assistance are becoming increasingly common.

Some vehicles are coming with blind spot warning, which reduces the likelihood that drivers will change lanes and collide with a vehicle in their blind spot. Rear cameras are required on new vehicles, but additional rear cross traffic warning and rear automatic emergency braking can decrease the chances that a vehicle will reverse into a pedestrian. Considering children are typically the victims in these kinds of accidents, these advanced safety systems are a great thing to have.

So which 2021 midsize luxury vehicles come with all of the advanced safety features?

Great question. Consumer Reports listed all of the vehicles with standard advanced safety systems. The following ten include every safety feature mentioned above.

2021 Audi Q7

The Audi Q7 is a three-row luxury midsize SUV with a 2-liter V6 that gets 20 miles per gallon. Not bad for a three-row SUV. The Audi Q7 also offers a smooth ride and a luxury interior.

2021 Audi E-Tron

The Audi E-Tron is Audi’s all-electric luxury SUV. The E-Tron has a luxury interior and is fun to drive, but its range is not as good as other electric SUVs. With its 95-kilowatt battery, the Audi E-Tron only has a range of 220 miles, and takes 13 hours to charge.

2021 Land Rover Discovery

The Land Rover Discovery is a luxury three row SUV that comes standard with a 2-liter turbo four cylinder engine, and an optional six cylinder turbo engine. Although the second and third rows are small, the cabin overall is comfortable and quiet. Still, having all of the advanced safety systems is a huge plus for the Land Rover Discovery.

2021 Lexus RX and RXL

The Lexus RX comes with either a 3.5-liter V6 or  a 450 hp hybrid. The RXL has a third-row, though it’s a bit cramped. Altogether, the Lexus RX has a nice interior and easy-to-use touch screens.

2021 Lincoln Aviator

The Lincoln Aviator is Lincoln’s version of the Ford Explorer. It has a 3-liter V6, though you could also get a plug-in hybrid. The cabin is super luxe, and the Aviator has a large infotainment screen. Both the Lincoln Aviator and the Ford Explorer come standard with all of the advanced safety systems.

2021 Lincoln Nautilus

You can get the Lincoln Nautilus with a 2.7-liter V6 or a 2-liter, four cylinder turbo engine. The Lincoln nautilus accelerates easily, handles well and has a nice, quiet cabin.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G Class

The Mercedes-Benz G Class is pricey, starting at $131,000. It comes with a 4-liter turbocharged V8 and 416 hp. It has large windows that enhance visibility (and the scenery), but it isn’t the most comfortable SUV to get in and out of. The addition of advanced safety systems updates the Mercedes-Benz G Class from its early days.

2021 Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90

There are several engine options available for the 2021 Volvo XC60, including a hybrid. Volvo is known for safety, so it should come as no surprise that both the Volvo XC60 and its slightly larger sibling, the Volvo XC90, come with all of the advanced safety systems. Additionally, they both have nice interiors and a dizzying assortment of controls.

Everyone knows what a lawn mower is used for. Mowing lawns, of course. But did you know that there are several lawn mower driving lawns related to lawn mowers? It’s true! Let’s talk about just some of the lawn mower driving laws you may not know about.

Riding lawn mowers are meant for one place and one place only. And that place? Is your lawn. In fact, according to HotCars, lawn mowers aren’t street legal in most areas. While many might think that they are, HotCars reports that many states have lawn mower driving laws banning people from driving their lawn mowers not only on public roads but highways too. As it turns out, the only place you might come across riding lawn mowers driving on the road is in rural areas.

However, if you do want to take your riding lawn mower for a spin on public roads, be sure to check your local ordinances before getting behind the wheel. HotCars also suggests outfitting your lawn mower with the proper lights and turn signals. Keep in mind that you might need to register your lawn mower and get a license plate for it too.

Yes, you can get a DUI for driving a riding lawn mower under the influence

Did you know that you can be charged with a DUI for operating your lawn mower while intoxicated? It’s true. You can. As a matter of fact, according to Carson J. Heefner, a Minneapolis-based law firm, driving a lawn mower while drunk could put you at risk of being arrested for a DUI. The law firm reports that’s because drunk driving statutes often use the term “motor vehicles” rather than more specific terms like “car” or “motorcycle.”

Several people have been arrested for driving their lawn mower while intoxicated too. Take, for example, this man from Central New York. According to Times Union, state troopers caught the man driving his lawn mower on the street. After pulling him over, state troopers allegedly found that he was more than four times over the legal limit for driving while intoxicated. He was promptly arrested and was later charged with multiple traffic offenses.

Driving a lawn mower while drunk isn’t the only thing that can get you into trouble. HotCars reports that driving a lawnmower with a suspended license can get you into trouble too. “ The law seeks to take away any possibility of a drunk driver striking again because even lawn mowers can cause quite a bit of damage if used improperly,” HotCars explained.

They aren’t wrong either. The TCPalm reports that back in 2017, a Florida man was arrested after driving a lawn mower while on a suspended license. At the time, the man told police that his license was suspended and that he was using his lawnmower to get around.

These aren’t the only lawn mower driving laws worth knowing about

These are just some of the lawn mower driving laws you should know about, HotCars reports. In fact, other lawn mower driving laws include age restrictions, passenger requirements, and in states like California, emissions regulations.

Buyers looking for something unique might love the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon. Cars.com describes it as a “near-luxury [midsize] hatchback,” making it the only one in its class. It first arrived for the 2019 model year, and with a refreshed interior for 2021, it’s now even more upscale. It even features ambient lighting.

The upscale interior of the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon

Cars.com says that the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is “a roomy, refined and refreshingly pleasant alternative for those willing to look beyond the mainstream sedan and SUV classes.” The premium interior has available two-tone Nappa leather-trimmed seats (synthetic leather is standard) and accents with brushed metal and glossy black trim.

The front seats have heated 12-way power-adjustable seats. Ventilated front seats, a massaging driver’s seat, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats are available options. Tri-zone automatic climate control is standard, and a panoramic sunroof is available.

The Arteon’s updates for 2021 give it a more luxurious look than most Volkswagen cars. Automobile points out that while Volkswagen cars generally have pretty similar interiors, the 2021 “Arteon’s interior looks like a concept-car rendition of the VW cabins we’ve come to know and love.”

The interior is also roomy enough to transport a family, with plenty of space in the rear seats and for cargo as well. Since it’s a hatchback, the Arteon’s cargo area is able to accommodate taller items as well.

The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon has an impressive ambient lighting system that helps enhance the cabin atmosphere. Translucent panels run across the tops of all four doors and connect across a light strip on the dashboard. The ambient lighting can be set to 30 different colors using the infotainment system touchscreen.

The color selections also change some of the colors used in the digital cockpit instrument cluster. This lighting package comes with the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line trim levels but not the SE base trim.

The technology features to expect

The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon has an updated dashboard space. It features the new Volkswagen MIB3 multimedia system. The 8-inch touchscreen is standard, and the menus are easy to use. However, Cars.com did find it strange that the tuning knob changes radio stations but not satellite stations. While there are a few knobs remaining, there are mainly touch-sensitive panels on the steering wheel that control the climate, which can be a bit tricky to use.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as are a navigation system, an eight-speaker stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. A 10-inch digital cockpit instrument cluster is also standard.

It can be configured and displays “car status, navigation, driving data, phone information and driver assistance features,” says Cars.com. Available tech features include wireless device charging, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and a USB port for charging only.

Tech in the VW Arteon also extends to its standard advanced safety features. It provides a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, reports U.S. News.

A number of other safety features are also available, including a surround-view parking camera system, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, parallel and perpendicular park assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and traffic sign recognition.

While rearview cameras are usually pretty basic, the Arteon has its camera located under the VW badge. It only appears when the car is in “reverse,” which keeps the view clear of rain, snow, and dirt. Cars.com liked this feature, especially since the Arteon doesn’t have great visibility out of the rear.

The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon has a unique body style, and it offers a premium interior. Its ambient lighting, along with its refreshed tech and comfort features, helps give it an upscale feel.

Looking for a new car that fits your budget but doesn’t skimp out on safety features? A few budget-friendly SUVs on this Consumer Reports list, like the Mazda CX-3 and Hyundai Kona, meet all the requirements.

The Hyundai Kona ranked on the list of safe new SUVs

Consumer Reports that the 2021 Hyundai Kona comes with forward collision warning (FCW) and automatic emergency braking for the city. Hyundai has been stepping the game up lately with all of the added features for cars and SUVs. Blindspot warning (BSW) isn’t available on the base trim. However, the Hyundai Kona SEL trim is still under $25,000 and blind-spot warning is included. With that trim, you also get rear cross-traffic warning (RCTW). For the front-wheel-drive option, the price comes out to $24,485 with the destination fee included.

Is the 2021 Mazda CX-30 a safe new SUV?

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 is based on the popular Mazda3 sedan. Both vehicles use a 2.5L four-cylinder and a six-speed automatic transmission. The SUV comes with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking for both the city and the highway. CR says the acceleration feels a bit slow, but the 28 miles per gallon makes up for the acceleration.

The infotainment system isn’t the easiest to navigate, but the interior feels high-end, even if it is slightly small. FCW and automatic emergency braking (AEB) are standard on the 2.5 S trim that starts at $22,050. There is an all-wheel-drive S model that starts at $23,500. With the $1,175 destination charge, both are under $25,000. If you want BSW and RCTW, the Select trim offers both for just around $25,225.

Consumer Reports recommends a smaller new SUV, the Kia Sportage

RELATED: Is the 2021 Kia Telluride Worth an Extra $25K?

The 2021 Kia Sportage is a smaller SUV option but one that has a few standard safety features. Both FCW and city AEB with pedestrian detection are included with the base LX trim. Even though the Sportage is labeled as smaller, CR says the inside has a lot of headroom. The LX trim starts at $24,090 and has a $1,175 destination charge. With all of those, the price is only $25,265. If you want the upgraded BSW option, it can be added for $2,100 on the LX, which puts you at $27,365.

A safe option by Chevy, the 2021 Chevrolet Equinox

The 2021 Chevrolet Equinox comes standard with FCW and AEB. The GM MyLink infotainment system comes with Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity, which is nice to have. All trim levels offer Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). The front-wheel-drive option starts at $23,800 and has a $1,195 for a total of $24,995. BSW is only available on the higher-up LT trim, which starts at $29,000, and even at that point, it is still an option.

Consumer Reports likes the final iteration of the Mazda CX-3

The 2021 Mazda CX-3 comes with FCW, BSW, city AEB with pedestrian detection, and highway AEB. The mini-SUV gets 28 miles per gallon overall and is quite compact. Consumer Reports notes that it is only 168 inches long, which fits most parking spaces better than some smaller cars. The 2.0L four-cylinder engine is the only one available for all trim levels.

The infotainment system is a bit confusing, with a one-knob situation controlling all of the features. All of the safety features mentioned are standard. The CX-3 starts at $22,190 before the $1,175 destination fee, which still leaves you below the $25,000 threshold. The CX-3 is taking a break for 2022, but it might be back. We shall see.

While some of these safe new SUVs might go over $25,000 with added features, most of the options will stay within budget. If safety is your number one priority, you can always add on extra features or go up a trim level.
