Buying a car is exciting––even if it’s used. In fact, sometimes buying a used car is especially exciting. That’s because when we are shopping at this price point it’s often for our first car. While most won’t necessarily end up in their dream car for $5 grand, it’s certainly possible to find a good used car to buy for under $5,000

One way to start researching when buyers are shopping for a used car is to take a peek at some YouTube videos. We found a particularly informative video done by Ryan Scribner that gives up some helpful hints for used car buyers. He advises looking in various places (to learn about different used car models––here are some used car models that he recommends

Toyota Camry

There is hardly a “good used car” list out there that’s missing the Toyota Camry. This is one of the most reliable cars with one of the most solid reputations. Toyota has done things right with the Camry over and over. Plus, there are tons of them out there so parts are easily sourced and mechanics who work on them are easy to find.

Scribner says an older used Toyota Camry gets about 34 MPG. It’s inexpensive to maintain and should see the odometer tick past 200,000 miles––at least. In fact, Scribner and virtually every other auto critic or information source out there agree that used car buyers pretty much can’t go wrong with a used Toyota Camry.

Toyota Corolla

A used Toyota Corolla is not hard to find. There are plenty of them out there, and many older models on the road are still going strong. In fact, the Toyota Corolla is the most sold car on earth

In his YouTube video, Ryan Scribner suggests the Camry. However, he says that the only reason he chose to put the Camry in the video instead of a used Toyota Corolla is that the Toyota Corolla is so much smaller. For those who don’t mind a little less cabin and cargo room, a used Toyota Corolla is a good used car to buy under $5,000 and gets up to 41 MPG.

Subaru Outback

If you find a good used Subaru Outback, it’s almost like finding a new best friend. There’s just something about the character of a reliable wagon, isn’t there? Not every used Subaru Outback is going to prove itself in terms of longevity, but the ones that do outlast many other models on the road.

Scribner suggest taking extra care combing forums for information about any used Subaru Outback buyers might be considering. That said, these are great little wagons with all-wheel drive and a little more personality than the average used car under $5 grand. An older Outback generally gets up to 28 MPG and can last over 300,000 miles if it’s maintained properly.

Good used cars under $5,000

Scribner says that it’s a good idea to dive into some forums or other places like Reddit. These are places where actual consumers share their experiences with certain makes and models. There’s no way of knowing for sure that a used car purchase is going to end with a good reliable car.

However, doing diligent research can mitigate some of the risks. For this kind of budget, buyers can expect any model they buy to generally be about 10 years old, or older. So be sure to test drive and thoroughly inspect any used car you are considering for purchase.

If you’re looking for a midsize luxury SUV, you’ve got a bevy of attractive options available, some of them available for under $50,000. There’s the Lincoln Nautilus, the Lexus RX, Volvo XC90, and the Infinity QX60, to name a few. You can get solid performance and handling, a gorgeous interior, and various tech amenities without paying too much. But if you’ve got the budget for it, you may just want to splurge on the 2021 Porsche Cayenne, which starts at around $67,500.

The 2021 Porsche Cayenne

Ranked No. 3 on MotorTrend’s list, “The Best Midsize Luxury SUVs to Buy in 2021,” the 2021 Porsche Cayenne is a stunning vehicle from a brand associated with luxury. The sleekly designed Cayenne performs not only well on the road but also off-road as well.

The base model is powered by a 3.0-liter turbo V6 engine which provides a whopping 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. It’s not especially fuel-efficient at 19/23 mpg city/highway, but it can hit 60 mph in a rapid 5.1 seconds. And for the environmentally conscious among us, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid comes with a 3.0-liter turbo V6 as well as a battery and motors that ramp horsepower and torque to 455 hp and 516 lb-ft, respectively.

The Cayenne seats five and has cargo space of 27.2 cubic feet (60.3 with the back row down). That’s a little on the smaller size. However, the interior is well-designed with pleasing luxury touches and trims. Each model also comes with a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay (though not Android Auto, unfortunately) and a 10-speaker audio system.

The Cayenne is also safe, garnering a perfect five-star rating from Euro NCAP. It also comes equipped with automatic emergency braking. However, common advanced driver safety assist features like blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assistance cost more. If you’re willing to speed, you can add nonstandard items like a 360-degree camera system as well.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S E-Hybrid

At the top of the trim range are the Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S E Hybrid, which will take you well into six-figure territory. Are they worth it? Well, the Turbo comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 541 hp and 567 lb-ft of torque. Fuel efficiency is low at 15/19 city/highway mpg, but it can hit 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds.

And the Turbo S E-Hybrid pairs the same engine with electric motors, providing drivers with 670 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 mph acceleration of 3.6 seconds.

Both these vehicles are MotorTrend’s recommended trim level. And in addition to upgraded engines, they also come with a 14-speaker audio system, AWD (rather than the base model’s FWD), remote keyless entry, keyless drive, power sunshade, a panoramic sunroof, and built-in navigation, among many other amenities.

Drivers and passengers will be seated in leather upholstery and take advantage of heated and ventilated seats, multi-way seat adjustments, and more.

Of course, either vehicle will set you back more than $125,000. But if you’re willing to splurge on a Cayenne, the Turbo is the ticket.

Other available trims and features

Sandwiched in between the base model Porsche Cayenne and top-trim Turbo are the Cayenne S and the Cayenne GTS. The S comes with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine producing 434 hp/405 lb-ft and hitting 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. However, the fuel efficiency is only 18/22 mpg. The S, which starts at around $85,000, also comes with voice-activated radio, remote keyless entry, navigation, and a panoramic sunroof.

For a more souped-up Cayenne, you can also opt for the GTS, which comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. You’ll get 453 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque from the GTS, but this is the least fuel-efficient Cayenne trim at 15/19 mpg city/highway. It’ll run you more than $105,000, but it’s quite quick, taking 4.5 seconds to hit 60 mph on standard 21-inch rims.

Not only does the Porsche Cayenne pack on luxury amenities and features, but its on-road and off-road performance and handling across trims is also remarkable. You’ll find few other midsize luxury vehicles have the full package the Cayenne does. And if you have the money, you should definitely scoop one.

Buying an expensive, high-end sports car or even supercar is a great way to stand out on the roads while driving a car that’s enjoyable. But, you don’t have to spend big bucks to have a vehicle that you won’t often see on the road. In fact, there are several reasonably priced sports cars that are enjoyable to drive, handle well, and still stand out on the road. While these cars might not be as exciting or attention-grabbing as a brand new McLaren or even C8 Corvette, they are still great, modestly priced options that you can find on average for under $10,000.

The Pontiac Solstice

If you saw the word ‘Pontiac’ and rolled your eyes, you should think twice because the Pontiac Solstice is still a fun sports car that’s more than affordable. It is most common to find the two-door roadster as a convertible, but they were offered with a hardtop option. Because the car was designed to be primarily a convertible, the body lines suit the car well, with the top both up and down.

The Pontiac Solstice was also offered with an automatic transmission or a manual transmission with a rather friendly clutch. While you can oftentimes find them in the $10,000 price range, there aren’t many others on the road, making it a relatively uncommon sports car for the price.

The Saturn Sky

If you don’t fancy the front and rear fascia of the Pontiac Solstice, you may like its just as affordable sister car, the Saturn Sky. The Sky has, debatably, more modern and aggressive styling and features while still sticking to the same platform that makes the Solstice so enjoyable to drive.

Just like the Solstice, you won’t see many other Saturn Sky owners around, which isn’t always a great thing, because there isn’t a wide range of aftermarket support for either vehicle, and customization options are limited. Regardless, even in completely stock condition the Sky is a striking car with smooth body lines, and you’ll be happy that the car isn’t all that common on the roads.

The Toyota MR2 Spyder

The Toyota MR2 Spyder is one of the most underrated affordable sports cars on the used car market. It’s often referred to as the ‘poor man’s Lotus Elise,’ and that comparison couldn’t be any more true. The lightweight nature of the vehicle means that even though it doesn’t boast an incredibly powerful engine, the handling, and power-to-weight ratio give the car a truly unique driving experience — and it’s worth mentioning that it’s one of the cheapest mid-engine sports cars you can buy.

Of course, like other options on this list, you can often find the Toyota MR2 Spyder on the used car market for that $10,000 price point in good, running condition, and, although some people think that car looks rather awkward, you won’t find many other ones out on the road, giving you a rather unique car for such an affordable price.

None of these cars might be as exciting as higher end, rare exotics, but they each offer an enjoyable driving and handling experience, and definitely stand out for the price.

The internet is a vast expanse of information. YouTube can be a great place to learn about car buying. In fact, this video we found on Ryan Scribner’s channel is chock-full of useful information about how to buy a good used car or SUV for under $5,000. There are also examples of what he claims are the best used SUVs to buy under $5 grand––here are our takeaways from the video, with the full video below.

Things to know when buying a used SUV under $5,000

Buying a used SUV––as with new car buying––can be a rewarding experience. After extensive research, careful asking of important questions, and patience to find a good deal, used SUV buyers can drive away in a solid machine that will last for years. However, this isn’t always the case.

It can’t hurt to check out what Consumer Reports or J.D. Power have to say about the models you like. That said, there’s no source more authentic than people who have actually owned the car. Forums and Reddit are great places for research as well.

It’s advisable to get the vehicle history report. Plus, it’s beneficial to see records of any maintenance that’s been performed. Scribner also has some suggestions for good used SUVs to buy under $5 grand––keep in mind that this price means looking at models around 10 years old or older.

Jeep Wrangler

This is a model that holds its value very well. While it’s among the best used SUVs to buy under $5,000, there aren’t a whole lot of them out there. However, it’s usually worth the hunt and a used Jeep Wrangler should see the odometer pass 200,000.

Scribner stresses the importance of checking for rust. Not only in a used Jeep Wrangler, but in any used vehicle you are looking at. A well-maintained used Jeep Wrangler is a good choice for a reliable car on a low budget, but it’s not exactly the most comfortable daily driver for long highway commutes.

This is a durable vehicle on a strong frame because it’s designed for off-roading. Scouring places like Craigslist or Facebook marketplace is a great way to find a good used vehicle on a small budget––even a used Jeep Wrangler.

Scion XB

This boxy little crossover is a member of the Toyota family. Scion is a brand launched by Toyota that didn’t last past 2016. But the Scion XB still makes a great used SUV and gets up to 31 MPG.

It’s going to offer great cargo space and it’s made up of parts Toyota manufactured, so it’s easy to service. Plus, it’s said to cost only $400/year on average to maintain. While the Scion XB isn’t exactly everyone’s cup of tea, it is a good used SUV under $5,000.

Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is another crossover among these suggestions for good used SUVs to buy under $5,000. Scribner warns against the first generation for a used Honda CR-V. He says in the YouTube video on how to buy a good car under $5 grand that the first-gen Honda CR-V struggles with burnt valves on the cylinder end.

That said, this is a used SUV that driver 250,000 miles or more when taken care of. A used Honda CR-V gets up to 29 MPG. In fact, Scribner says that his used Honda CR-V from 1999 gets 24 MPG.

Buying a used SUV under $5,000

Research is key, folks. YouTube videos like this one are only the start. When it comes to finding a good used SUV for this price point it’s important to dig deep into the history of the prospective buys––from getting the vehicle history, to thoroughly searching for problems like rust or anything leaking, it’s best to leave no stone unturned.
