No matter how stylish or high-tech a vehicle, parents should be most concerned with car safety. Major automotive publications and regulators, such as the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, test vehicles extensively for safety. But car seats are also important to evaluate.

Though child safety seats must meet minimum NHTSA standards, don’t assume all are created equal. If you’re a new parent, here’s what you need to know about car seats to protect your most precious cargo.

Which type of car seat should you buy for your baby?

If you’re shopping for car seats, you’ll come across three types. The first is a rear-facing model. You should use these from your child’s birth until they outgrow the maximum weight and height limits or turn 1 year old. These products come with a base that remains in your vehicle and a removable, portable seat. This car seat should also always face the rear of the vehicle for optimal safety.

Another type is a convertible car seat. They’re both rear-facing seats for toddlers (1 to 3 years old) and forward-facing seats for older children (4 to 7 years old). Some companies market their models for infants. However, these seats are heavier to carry or transfer from vehicle to vehicle.

Then there are booster seats, reserved for older children. You won’t need to use a booster until your child is at least 40 pounds or turns 4 years old. They offer an elevated seating position so that your child can use the vehicle’s seatbelt safely.

What you should look for in an infant car seat

You should first make sure your infant safety seat fits well in your car and can be installed easily and securely within, Babylist.com reports. Some models are ideal for smaller cars or larger models. You can secure a car seat using a vehicle’s seatbelt or the LATCH (lower anchors and tethers for children) system. Ideally, it should come with indicators showing you have installed it properly.

You’ll also want to look for models with easily cleanable fabric because messes will happen. And most infant seats on the market today are compatible with strollers, so you might want to evaluate both. For instance, you might want a car seat that’s compatible with strollers too big to fit in your trunk. If your infant car seat is sold as a standalone product, online product pages and packaging descriptions detail compatible strollers.

Finally, used car seats are generally less expensive than new ones, but you should ensure used models are safe. Models that are too old may no longer meet safety regulations or have worn-out parts. Obtain them from trusted friends or family members rather than buying one online if possible.

Also, check your car seat model’s history and flag any recalls. And try to obtain a product manual online to learn how to maintain the seat properly.

Other safety considerations

Laws and regulations set safety standards regarding how manufacturers must design child car seats. However, some laws apply to parents when transporting children inside vehicles. Varying by state, these laws come with financial penalties parents face if they don’t comply.

Each state sets safety standards based on input from federal and state regulators, safety experts, and other stakeholders. However, some safety practices depend upon the state. For example, in Illinois, children must ride in rear-facing seats until the age of 2 or until they grow to 40 pounds or 40 inches tall. But in New Mexico, children weighing less than 40 pounds must ride in rear-facing seats until age 4.

It’s important to understand state laws before buying a car seat for your baby. It’s equally important to do your due diligence on how best to protect your child in your vehicle. Read consumer and product reviews, as well as available research studies. Your child’s safety depends on it.

Affordable, loaded, 300-mile range, 10,000 lb towing capacity; the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup offers a gang of features. Ford made sure the company’s golden goose debuted with a punch. And Ford is making sure you don’t forget exclaiming, “the truck of the future today.”

Treading new waters with the company crown is risky, but all of the auto manufacturers are doubling down on electrification. Somebody had to be the first, and Ford tagged itself for that role. But to be that, the Lightning had to be a feature-laden affordable workhorse.

An overload of features distinguishes the Ford F-150 Lightning

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning debut | Ford

To start; two battery options including the 300 miles extended range, dual inboard motors spitting out 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque, a total payload of 2,000 lbs, and a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 lbs. With zero to 60 mph in the mid-fours, it is quicker than a Raptor.

And then there is the price. At $39,974 it’s cheaper than a Mustang Mach-E or a Tesla Model 3. But the 40-thou base can ramp up quickly. If you’re not careful, you can see $90,000 loading the Lightning up.

The Ford Lightning provides better handling with independent rear suspension

Still, it does everything a traditional F-150 has done with some twists. Full-time 4×4, the proven alloy body, and metal skid plates protecting the electric motors and battery. Plus better handling with the first independent rear suspension in a full-size truck and BlueCruise hands-free driving-as long as the in-cabin camera sees you’re watching the road.

Included with the Lightning are an 80-amp charge station, dual onboard chargers, and 54 miles of added range in a quick-charge 10 minutes. And 15 to 80 percent charges take only 40 minutes. After all, when you need a workhorse you need it quickly.

Just one Lightning trick is “Onboard Scales” which determines load weights

And the Lightning has other tricks up its sleeve. It has an onboard, real-time range calculator. It provides range based on towing, payload, and weather conditions. And the payload part of the equation means the Lightning has Onboard Scales to determine load weights.

Shifting to become a mobile electricity generator, the Ford Lightning provides up to 9.6 kilowatts with 11 power outlets. Maybe power outlets are the new cup holders? These features are aided by Ford Intelligent Backup Power giving the Lightning the ability to power your home during a blackout for up to three days.

Intelligent Power also features the ability to power your house during peak energy hours. Then it reverses during low-cost overnight rates to charge back up in time for your morning commute. So you get cheaper electricity when you need it and take a load off of the grid besides. And all of this back-and-forth can be monitored by an app on your phone.

Ford has a name for everything-even the 14.1 cubic feet of storage space in the frunk. It calls that the “Mega Power Frunk.” With its water-resistant construction, four electrical outlets, two USB ports, and drain hole, you’ve got the makings for a self-contained party including a place to ice down the keg.

Ford “Power-Up” sends over-the-air updates in less than two minutes

Ford Power-Up (we told you Ford has a name for everything) provides over-the-air updates when ready. These can be scheduled when your Lightning is idle. And the 12-inch instrument cluster is customizable.

So now if you’re geeked up enough to march down to your local Ford dealer you need to hold your horses. The Lightning won’t be pounding the highways until the spring of 2022. But you can reserve your own for just $100 at Lightning’s official website.

If you browse 2021 Mazda CX-9 reviews, you’ll notice that most critics find one issue in common. The Mazda CX-9 doesn’t have a touchscreen. But after testing this family vehicle, the lack of having a touchscreen infotainment system isn’t a dealbreaker.

The 2021 Mazda CX-9’s biggest issue isn’t a big deal

2021 Mazda CX-9 | Mazda

There are several 2021 Mazda CX-9 reviews that list wonderful things about this family SUV. However, some critics can’t get over one feature. The infotainment system in the CX-9 isn’t a touchscreen.

The Car Connection refers to it as a cursed infotainment system because it can be distracting to use while on the road.

According to J.D. Power, the lack of having a touchscreen is one of the most common complaints about the CX-9 by drivers. Using the center controls can be a source of frustration.

SlashGear noted that the center stack has an attractive layout with a luxurious design. However, using the rotary controller provides a plasticky or sticky feel that takes the fun away.

However, I took the time to learn how to use the rotary controller for the infotainment system and got acclimated very quickly. Using the dial to select radio stations, navigation, phone contacts, etc, became simple. If you know the names of your favorite radio stations, then finding them is fast and easy.

The 10.3-inch infotainment display has clear graphics, it’s fast and responsive. Apple CarPlay runs great and Android Auto is included. If you get mixed up, you can press the home button above the rotary knob to get back to the main menu. All you have to do is take a few minutes to learn the controls, and then you can master the entire system.

How is the Mazda CX-9’s tech?

RELATED: One of the Honda Pilot’s Biggest Weaknesses Is the Mazda CX-9

Aside from the lack of a touchscreen, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is loaded with incredible tech. The wireless phone charging pad is in a convenient spot, and there are USB ports everywhere you look. Even the third row has two USB ports for kids to keep their devices charged.

The Active Driving Display, also known as the heads-up display, provides crisp graphics and crucial driving information such as your speed, the speed limit, lane-centering assistance, traffic sign recognition, and turn-by-turn navigation.

You don’t have to take your eyes off the road, and the settings are easy to adjust. You can change its height, the brightness, what information is displayed, and turn the system off. My favorite feature to include on the display is the blind-spot warning system.

The premium Bose audio system works great. The heated and ventilated seats keep you comfortable, the dual-zone automatic climate control keeps everyone happy. Plus, the hands-free power liftgate is incredibly convenient.

How are the Mazda CX-9’s safety features?

The interior of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 with the rotary infotainment system dial
2021 Mazda CX-9 interior | Mazda

The 2021 Mazda CX-9 comes loaded with standard safety features, which is an essential part of advanced car tech. A few standard options include automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

The rear-cross traffic alert is very responsive, and the driver attention alert system will notify you if you seem drowsy or have decreased attentiveness. Plus, the automatic high beams switch to low beams when it senses oncoming traffic or a vehicle ahead.

Mazda prioritizes safety, which is why tech is focused on keeping drivers alert and free from distractions. The CX-9 earned a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, so giving up a touchscreen for safety and convenience is a fair trade.
