Just when the auto industry pummels its patrons with news of hydrogen-hybrid and electric cars, it offers an olive branch. This comes from the hands of the automaker that almost single-handedly pioneered the rush to paint everything green, Toyota. Last year Toyota said it would halt V8 production over the next few years. Although its time isn’t yet up, recent findings show a different story. Patent filings surfaced earlier this year, depicting a new twin-turbo v8 engine design. Here’s what we can gather from the table scraps of crude drawings and patent filings.

The patent shows two turbochargers

The Drive brought attention to the patent, which can be found on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s website. Clear as day, the applicant is “Toyota”, the inventor as Masami Ishikawa. The documents show what is clearly a car, with a driver and a box labeled “Internal Combustion Engine” in the front section of the car. Although only one cylinder bank is visible, the shape of the block suggests there is a second on the opposite side, which is confirmed in the description. Perched at the top appears to be two turbochargers.

What will receive this V8?

Currently, Toyota is only using V8s in its trucks and some Lexus models. Though it’s just speculation, this V8 could appear in the Lexus IS F. It could also be similar to the new twin-turbo V8 that resides in the Lexus LS F and LC F coupe. The Lexus LS F and LC F use a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 661 horsepower. Seeing as how the Tundra is slated to lose its V8 imminently, it stands to reason this particular V8 could go into Lexus models.

Is the V8 going the way of the dodo?

Not many cars still come with V8s. Aside from the big three muscle cars from America, the V8 is reserved primarily for luxury cars and trucks. BMW still uses a V8, but Mercedes-Benz recently announced they may no longer sell them in the U.S. Mercedes’ most recent contribution to V8 lore was its AMG GT63 S E, a car that used a hybrid 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to make 831 horsepower.

What’s happening to Toyota’s trucks?

Currently, Toyota still uses a V8 in multiple vehicles. However, it was reported that Toyota ordered its factory in Huntsville Alabama to amass V8s before losing its best attribute and switching over to building 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6s. With that in mind, Toyota is well within its time frame and plan of producing V8s. From the pictures in the document, the engine doesn’t appear to have any special traits to suggest the automaker is actually developing new twin-turbo V8 technology.

Possibly the end of an era

While it’s nice to see carmakers still producing v8s, it’s clear they have a limited time on this earth. With Dodge producing an electric muscle car, Mercedes-Benz halting U.S. production, and Toyota phasing them out, there may not be many more chances to purchase a new V8-equipped passenger car in the near future. This could drive up the prices of used V8 cars, but only time will tell what the real outcome will be.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin are officially at odds. The two companies have made headlines launching space expeditions. Now they are battling over a Nasa lunar lander contract. A lawsuit has been filed, and billions of dollars are on the line.

The billionaire space race

Elon Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, a year before Tesla was founded. In nearly two decades, the company has experienced disastrous failures. Through trial and error, it has also made historic accomplishments. Elon isn’t the only billionaire with his eyes on the stars.

Jeff Bezos is the world’s wealthiest man. The Amazon founder changed the way that most of the world shops online. Like Musk, Bezos had otherworldly ambitions for years. He founded the Blue Origin aerospace manufacturer and sub-orbital spaceflight services company back in the year 2000.

Blue Origin has been relatively low-key until recently. Blue Origin is active, and Bezos himself took a trip to space. Now the company is competing with SpaceX. According to Business Insider, the two companies are currently fighting over a $2.3 billion contract to get astronauts to the moon. Bezos believes that Musk’s SpaceX was unfairly rewarded this contract by NASA.

Why is SpaceX’s NASA lunar lander contract so important?

Bezos and Blue Origin’s attack on the SpaceX lunar lander contract seems very personal because of funding reasons. Multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos solely funds Blue Origin. SpaceX, on the other hand, relies on contracts such as the lunar lander contract for funding. Bezos is after SpaceX’s bread and butter with the lawsuit he is filing against the company.

NASA contracts are important for Elon and SpaceX because they keep the lights…and the rockets on. They are becoming increasingly important for Bezos because these contracts can secure funding that the billionaire seems unwilling to provide Blue Origin with himself. After all, what’s a business without customers?

SpaceX and Blue Origin are fighting over contracts from the American government and NASA because both companies need them to grow. These contracts could play pivotal roles in both companies’ timelines. The only thing keeping the billionaires from their dreams…is each other.

Which company is most likely to win the space race?

It’s important to understand that Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are trying to accomplish different things with their respective companies. Bezos is essentially trying to establish colonies in space, while Elon’s goal seems slightly more self-serving. Elon and SpaceX have been able to secure many more contracts than Blue Origin so the company is leaps and bounds ahead from a business reputation standpoint with its customer base.

Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin can successfully achieve Bezos’ wild vision of making space more habitable in time, or at least it has the best chance because of its founder’s insane wealth. But can the company be successful without trying to snub SpaceX in the process? Is the vastness of space ironically not big enough for Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos?

Dodge has had heavy involvement in racing events. Among these is Roadkill Nights, an event involving legal street racing and other spectacular automotive performances. Recently, Dodge uploaded the full 2021 show to its YouTube channel. Read on to learn more about Roadkill Nights, the uploaded even video, and past Dodge partnerships.

What is Roadkill Nights?

Roadkill Nights is an event primarily featuring street or drag racing. While drag racing is usually illegal, the event is fully sanctioned, allowing others to enjoy it without legal drawbacks. According to MotorTrend, this isn’t all, however. The event includes “a whole lot more, including drifting and speed exhibitions, a car show, and plenty of family-friendly entertainment.” This year, it added a new event featuring Eric Malone against popular social media influencers in a grudge racing competition. Being a well-known grudge racer himself, the stakes were certainly high to beat him.

The event is presented by MotorTrend each year, although there was a hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic. After meeting health and safety regulations, it was able to bring the event back in August 2021. The event took place on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The road has a long and storied history, and it is perhaps one of the most iconic roads in the U.S.

The entire event is now available on the Dodge YouTube channel

There might be a variety of reasons you weren’t able to attend Roadkill Nights this year. Perhaps you couldn’t go to Michigan for the event, or perhaps the tickets sold out. Additionally, maybe you did attend, but you want to relive the experience all over again or see the events from a new angle.

Thankfully, Dodge made an interesting move recently and posted the entire event on its YouTube channel. Typically, the event is only on MotorTrend’s channel. However, since Dodge was the sponsor behind the event in 2021, its affiliation prompted them to post the video. Now you can watch the full live stream on both of its channels.

Considering MotorTrend has kept up the past Roadkill Nights events, there doesn’t seem to be a limited timeframe on when you can watch it. As such, you can watch and come back to it as many times as you like. In total, the live stream is just under 10 hours. It allows you to see the event as you would if you were there live. The main difference is advertisements, which are included intermittently throughout the live stream, including ads for Dodge models and some MotorTrend productions.

Other Dodge partnerships with brands and publications

Beyond Roadkill Nights, Dodge has partnered with many brands as part of its overall marketing strategy. According to IEG Sponsorship Report, it has partnered with everything from energy drinks to musical acts. Its partnership with Fast and Furious includes Dodge models appearing in many of the franchise’s films. This includes the most recent entry in the series, Fast and Furious 9.

The main reason for this partnership is the overlap of audiences. Many who enjoy Fast and Furious are car enthusiasts, making it a perfect match. Since the movies are based around cars, it also has the unique ability to show off the technical specs and performance of Dodge’s different vehicles, including its muscle cars.

The company has also partnered with Lego, allowing people to create versions of its cars in miniature brick form. Dodge currently has a set on Lego’s website, including a dragster and a 1970 Dodge Challenger. Thanks to its variety of partnerships, Dodge has reached many potential customers across different age groups.
