“Ultra-Rare” 1938 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante Coupé is Heading to Auction

One owner pulled out all of the stops for this vehicle. This classic car is the pinnacle of rare Bugattis. The 1938 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante Coupé is extensively documented, features a “roll-top” roof, and won Best in Class at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours D’elegance. What else sets this Bugatti apart? Apparently, the top!

How much is a 1938 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante Coupé worth?

Robb Report first reported that this “Ultra-Rare” 1938 Bugatti Type 57S is heading to the auction block. Worldwide Auctioneers notes renowned Bugatti historian David Sewell documented this particular Bugatti Type 57S. Chassis number 57641 even has the factory records that indicate it was delivered to Monsieur Baptifaut of France on November 15, 1938.

The historic documents noted Parisian Bugatti collector Henri Novo’s extremely rare “roll-back” roof design during its life. The Bugatti Type 57S Atalante Coupé features the Atalante body. This is one of the rarest attributes for a Bugatti of this time.

“The “Atalante” body that was used on this particular T57 is a very interesting and rare one. It is a so-called TO (Toit Ouvrant or Bureau/Roll Top) Grand Raid, one of the very early “Atalantes” before the name was actually used.”

It participated in events like Pebble Beach, Le Mans, and Corsica Trials. It was even noted in “The Bugatti Book.” “The Bugatti Book.” is a prestigious book belonging to the Bugatti Owner’s Club. The last time a vehicle of this nature went up for sale by Gooding & Company in 2020, it fetched $10.4 million.

The 1938 Bugatti Type 57S won at Le Mans – twice!

Bugatti made the Type 57S from 1934 until 1940. This model, in particular, has attributes that make it even rarer. Ettore Bugatti’s son Jean designed this model. “The Type 57 included S and SC variants—Surbaissé for “lowered” and Compresseur for ‘supercharger’—and featured a low-slung chassis,” Robb Report noted. Bugatti made only 710 examples of the Bugatti Type 57S. The Type 57S and 57SC Atalante on saw 17 produced.

Jean Bugatti named the 1938 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante Coupé after Atalanta, a heroine of Greek mythology.

“They are regarded as among the most beautiful of all Bugattis, evoking speed and expressing the graceful spirit of Art Deco style.”

This Bugatti offers a 3.3L engine getting 160 hp at 4,500 rpm. It had a top speed of 120 mph at a time where most had trouble hitting 50. During the 1937 and 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Type 57S won.

Other vehicles up for auction by Worldwide Auctioneers

Worldwide Auctioneers has its 14th annual Auburn Auction on September 3rd and 4th. It offers a 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, a 1937 Miller-Gulf Race Car, and a 1934 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Convertible Sedan. So far, though, the Type 57S is the clear standout vehicle for sale.

Ralph Lauren owns a 1938 Type 57SC Atlantic, but not the 57S Atalante Coupé. Bob Smith Coachworks in Texas fully restored the classic car in 2012. 2021 has been an exciting year for private auctions, so this particular 1938 Bugatti Type 57S might break that $10.4 million record.

The 2021 BMW X7 comes with a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. BMW has been partnering with Harman Kardon for thirty years. According to CoPilot, BMW owners say that this sound system makes them feel like they’re at a concert.

Recently, the Ferrari 296 GTB was released for Fortnite. Players can drive the new Ferrari around last month, adding a new supercar to the lineup. According to Epic Games, there are a few challenges players can operate the new Ferrari 296 GTB.

If you can find the Ferrari Fortnite locations, you can complete Ferrari time trials. Drivers can try to reach the maximum allowed speed and drive the Ferrari through a storm. The newest hybrid Ferrari is also a part of the Epic Quests from week 7.

In real life, the newest Ferrari 296 GTB is equipped with a 120° V6 engine coupled with a plug-in (PHEV) electric motor. Ferrari says, “the car thus redefines the idea of driving fun to provide pure excitement not only when pursuing maximum performance but also during everyday driving.” So why not toss it into a video game?

There are two prominent Ferrari Fortnite locations that people report seeing the vehicle. The first Ferrari location in Fortnite is in a parking garage east of Holly Hatchery, Inverse reports. If you go inside, the red Ferrari 296 GTB should be parked somewhere. Players reported seeing this reasonably regularly.

If you can get there before other players do, you have a better shot at finding the supercar. Otherwise, it could be moved somewhere else by another player. If that location doesn’t work, there is another spot by Slurpy Swamp. If you go across the bridge, the new Ferrari hybrid is toward the end of the bridge near the barricades. There might also be traffic cones nearby.

Believer Beach and Lazy Lakes also have the Ferrari 296 GTB. At Believer Beach, you can usually find it in the parking lot of the hotel. There is the possibility of a Ferrari spawning at a nearby gas station, both at Believer Beach and Lazy Lakes. If you happen upon a car dealership, look for the red Ferrari on the lot.

Players can dress the part, too. With the new “Road Ready Ferrari Bundle,” players get the Modena Icon, Maranello Racer Outfits, and even the Ferrari Turbo Back Bling backpack. It probably won’t hurt the popularity of the new 296 GTB. But beware, this Ferrari option burns a ton of gas in the game. Be sure to fill up before attempting any time trials.

Ferrari isn’t new to video games and was a popular car in games like Need for Speed back in the day. It makes sense to have a new vehicle like the Ferrari 296 GTB in a popular game like Fortnite. Car shopping can be overwhelming, especially through online services such as CarGurus. Automotive scams are on the rise, and if you’re not careful, you could lose your investment. When it comes to buying cars online, you should never break one major rule: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. 

For instance, if a price is too low for a certain model, view that as a red flag. The most common car buying scams include fake money orders, cars rebuilt from salvage titles, and the good old “the car runs just great.” So, can you get scammed on CarGurus?

What is CarGurus?

CarGurus is one of the most popular car-buying sites in the United States and is a reliable resource for finding new and used cars and researching car values. You can also use CarGurus to sell your car or conduct unbiased research.

Like many online hiring sites, CarGurus doesn’t sell the cars themselves. It connects buyers and sellers. For instance, if you find a car you want to purchase, the service connects you with nearby dealerships to complete the sale. 

Can you get scammed on CarGurus?

According to the Better Business Bureau, cases of virtual business vendor scams are on the rise, which is why you should exercise due diligence before conducting a transaction. CarGurus has a Trust & Safety section on its website that warns you about the most common scams.

You should especially watch out for cars that have been advertised way below their market value, sellers that avoid third-party inspections from the buyer and refuse personal meetings, and those who seem to be pushing for hasty sale completion. Don’t complete a sale until you have proof of the vehicle’s existence and confirmation it’s in the listed condition. 

CarGurus also takes several steps to mitigate fraud attempts, including using sophisticated software to scan the listing details to determine its legitimacy. They also require sellers to provide the car’s VIN before communicating with buyers. 

If you experience a fraud attempt on the site, you should report it to the Federal Trade Commission, notify the FBI’s Internet Fraud Complaint Center, or contact your local police department. 

What are alternative sites to buy a car?

Being a savvy car buyer requires you to consider your options before committing to one site. If you’re still weighing your options, here are CarGurus’ top three competitors. 

Carvana

According to Driving Sales, CarGurus and Carvana are owned by the same company. This site is a great choice for shoppers looking for a convenient way to buy used cars without visiting a dealership. 

Carvana says it’s been in operation since 2015 and has streamlined the car shopping experience. The listing and buying process is pretty straightforward, and the service also offers pickup and delivery options. In addition, you can get car financing from this site. 

CarMax

CarMax is one of the largest used car shopping sites in the United States. Unlike Carvana and CarGurus, CarMax has several physical locations across the nation. This means you can easily shop in person and test-drive your preferred vehicle before making a purchase. 

On the flip side, while this reduces the number of scams you can experience on the site, it also means you have to pay more through this site than others. That’s because CarMax has many overhead costs, which it transfers to the final price of the vehicle.

One thing that sets Cars.com apart from the others is that it offers abundant service information. Cars.com also has recommended service centers, tips on DIY repairs and how to make your car sell faster, and tools you can use to price repairs.
