The use of airbags in automobiles became widespread in 1998 when Congress passed a law that required automakers to install them on their vehicles. When combined with the car’s seatbelt, an airbag can greatly prevent serious and even fatal injuries in the event of an auto accident.  However, airbag fraud is a big issue in the U.S. and it can lead to serious injuries, unnecessary costs, and even death. Let’s take a closer look.

Fake or non-existent airbags can be fatal

You might be familiar with the major Takata airbag recall that happened a few years ago, however, there have also been numerous accounts of airbag fraud, reports Carchex. These accounts typically come from car owners that purchased used cars, either from private parties or dealerships, and reported that the airbags didn’t work or were not installed at all.

Replacing a car’s airbags after an accident is a costly repair and some unscrupulous shops and dealers choose to pocket the money they get instead of performing the actual repair. As you can imagine, this sheer negligence can lead to serious injuries and even fatalities.

Shops have even used counterfeit airbags in order to cut costs in the past. In fact, the issues were so prevalent that Autoblog reported that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration sent out a notice in 2012 regarding fake airbags. In their testing, NHTSA discovered that these counterfeit airbags can either fail by not inflating or by launching shrapnel into the passenger’s face and hands.

How to tell if a car has a counterfeit or deployed airbag

Fortunately, there are signs that used car buyers can look for to tell if the vehicle’s airbag was deployed or is counterfeit.

  • Check the vehicle history report: Cars Direct recommends thoroughly checking the car’s vehicle history report before purchasing it. For example, Carfax does a great job in showing damages from a previous accident. It can even tell you if the airbags were deployed. If you need more clarification, ask the seller about any accidents and the repairs done afterward.
  • Inspect the airbag cover: The airbag cover splits open when the airbag deploys, so it’s a good idea to check if the cover has been taped or tampered with. You can also check if the cover has been repainted as the airbag will look newer than the rest of the car’s interior.
  • Inspect the dashboard: Since the passenger-side airbag is located inside the dashboard, the dashboard will split open in the event of an accident. In that case, it’s a good idea to inspect the dashboard for any glaring signs that the airbag went off or has been replaced.
  • Check for the airbag indicator light: Another way to tell if the airbag is working properly is to turn on the car’s ignition and check for an airbag indicator light. If the light stays on, flashes, or doesn’t light up at all, then the airbag could have been tampered with.

If you’re unsure about the car’s airbag, then get an inspection done

If you plan to buy a used car from a private party or dealership and are worried about the airbag, then it’s a good idea to have the car inspected by a mechanic. If the mechanic informs you that the airbag was tampered with, then you may want to consider having it replaced with an OEM airbag for factory safety specifications or skipping the purchase altogether.

Airbags have been saving lives for years, however, the careless negligence of some repair shops can lead to unfortunate fatalities. Look out for your own safety and make sure that the car you’re buying has a properly functioning airbag.

The Aston Martin DB5 from the James Bond movie Goldfinger is estimated to be worth $24.8 million. But almost 25 years ago it was stolen from an airplane hangar at the Boca Raton Airport in Florida. Nobody has seen the iconic movie car since then. Until now.

This was the only James Bond Aston Martin with working gadgets

Four DB5 Aston Martins were used in Goldfinger. Of those four only one of them had working gadgets. This is the one, which explains the high estimated value. When Goldfinger was released it was called “the most famous car in the world.”

When it was first stolen it was thought the car had been dumped in the ocean or involved in an insurance scam. At the time, it was owned by businessman and car collector Anthony Pugliese. But nothing was ever discovered through those tips.

Art and Recovery International says it knows where the Bond Aston Martin is

Art and Recovery International is as its name implies; a company specializing in the recovery of stolen art. The car Sean Connery blitzed through Europe in 1964 fits that category-it’s art. Christopher Marinello is chief executive, and for years has been following leads about the car.

Now he says it has been spotted in the Middle East. He’s not saying much, according to The Telegraph, because that could cause problems for its recovery. He will say that Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain are all potential locations he’s looking at.

“I’m hopeful that the possessor will come forward voluntarily before I have to make an announcement,” Marinello told The Telegraph. “It’s my policy to give possessors of stolen and looted objects every opportunity to do the right thing. I don’t believe the current possessor knew the car was stolen when he or she acquired it. Now that they do know, I think they should make every effort to have a discreet confidential discussion about how we clear the title to this iconic vehicle.

What can you do with a famous stolen car?

What can one do with one of the most recognizable cars that exist? You can’t show it, and can’t tell anyone you own it because you don’t. And you don’t want it to be discovered.

“They can only show it off on a very limited basis,” says Marinello. “It can’t travel outside its current location or be exhibited in a museum, so why not reach out and resolve this?” The Aston Martin was seen in a private viewing and one of those attendees came forward with the information.

It was yanked out of its hangar and whisked off in a waiting cargo plane

Best estimates are that in spite of its weight from all of the movie hardware it was dragged out of the hangar. A transport plane would have been waiting, and then whisked it off to parts unknown. The Boca Raton airspace is uncontrolled so there was no radar tracking of the plane. This was a perfect location to pull off a heist.

Marinello says he is expecting a call either from the person with the car or investigators and police helping in the search. There is even a multi-part podcast hosted by actress Elizabeth Hurley called The Most Famous Car in the World. Not everyone knows this car was stolen, but soon everyone will know. That’s a perfect scenario for helping the world spot the missing car.

There were many unforgettable moments of the 89th 24 hours of Le Mans endurance race. The first and second place winning Toyota hypercars battled for position, a Ferrari lost a wheel, and a race leader stalled during the final lap! Many spectators remember the brutal double-impact suffered early on by Sophia Floersch. Learn more about the Sophia Floersch Le Mans crash, the second dramatic hospitalization of her racing career.

The 2018 Macau Grand Prix Sophia Floersch Crash

Sophia Floersch (born in 2000) began racing carts at just six years old before graduating to Formula 4 and Formula 3. A talented driver, Floersch (often written Flörsch), was recruited by Redbull at an early age and then selected for the Macau Grand Prix in 2018. Unfortunately, this race ended in a horrific crash in which her car tumbled through the air, and she fractured a vertebrate. After a grueling 10-hour surgery, Floersch returned to race Formula 3 and the Macau Grand Prix again.

Floersch began endurance racing in 2020. Her first endurance season culminated in driving the 24-hours of Le Mans for Richard Mille racing and finishing a respectable 9th in her class. In 2021, Floersch returned to Le Mans with big plans. But this race too would end in a disaster, with another Sophia Floersch crash

The Richard Mille Racing Team (previously the Signatech team) is a French-based endurance racing team. Like most contestants in the LMP2 class, the 2021 Richard Mille team ran a purpose-built Oreca 07 endurance race car. In addition to Sophia Flörsch, drivers included Tatiana Calderón and Beitske Visser.

Rain plagued the 89th annual 24-hour of Le Mans, causing multiple weather-related crashes. It rained on the Circuit de la Sarthe all morning. By race time, at 10 AM, the weather was clearing but the track was still wet. The drivers had to complete an extra lap in formation before true racing began. Then six hours later, the rain started again. During this second rainstorm, the five pack-leading Hypercars stayed on the track but several LMP1 cars crashed in minor fender-benders and returned to the pits for repairs.

It seemed that the drivers all had the hang of racing in the rain. But you cannot let your guard down on one of the world’s deadliest racing circuits.

Floersch and other drivers packed together as they all attempted to navigate the infamous “Porsche curves” S-turns. Then Argentinian driver Franco Colapinto lost control. His orange #26 G-Drive Aurus spun across the track and struck the front of Sophia Floersch #1 car. Floersch #1 Orteca spun around and hit the wall.

Colapinto slid to a stop off the track. But Sophia Floersch crashed off the barrier and found herself stranded in the middle of the dangerous S-turn. An emergency radio broadcast went out to the drivers to warn them of the Franco Colapinto and Sophia Floersch crash.

As spectators watched, Floersch started her car, shifted into reverse, and began to back off the track. Then the next pack of racers entered the S-turns, two-wide and fighting for position. With nowhere to go, racing Team India’s Eurasia Ligier #74 slammed into Floersch.

Every Le Mans car carries a g-force datalogger. During a severe accident, this g-force sensor activates a blue “medical light,” which means the driver must exit the car to be examined by medical professionals.

When #74 t-boned Floersch, the #1’s medical light came on, and spectators knew the Sophia Floersch crash was severe. Race officials called a yellow flag and hurried to the track to retire the #1 car and take Floersch to the hospital. Thankfully, Floersch was soon deemed healthy and released.

Why Sophie Floersch Was On Her Phone

Some of Floersch concerned Formula 3 fans may have been confused, watching her in-car footage of the crash. After the #1 car was struck for the second time–by the #74 car–the engine stalled and Floersch was truly stranded. At this point, she got out her cellphone and called her teammates who are in the pit lane.

While on the phone, Floersch listened to her crew’s advice and tried several more things to get her car started and moving. But nothing worked. At this point, emergency personnel had entered the raceway and surrounded her car. One race official knocked on the #1’s window: as her medical light had come on, Le Mans had to begin its concussion protocol. Floersch apologizes to her team, “I have to come out.”

In Formula One, drivers are not allowed to use their phones while in the cockpit for any reason. But endurance racing is a different sport entirely. The Le Mans announcers were not surprised to see Flörsch on her phone, even concluding, “There must be a problem with the radio.”

To celebrate their participation in the Woodward Dream Cruise, Ford is looking back at the history of the Mustang and introducing what they call the “Ice White Edition Appearance Package” for both Ford Mustang coupe and Mustang Mach-E. This package is the first time in 28 years that Ford has offered a white-on-white colorway for the Mustang. That’s right, 90s kids, Ford is taking it back to 1993. For the “youngins” out there, 1993 was the year of the “Fox body” style Mustang.

“Mustang has always had the power to attract attention on the road, but the new Mustang Ice White Edition could – just like the original ’93 Triple White Fox body feature Mustang – become one of the hot collectibles of future generations,” said Jim Owens, Mustang brand marketing manager. “We are proud to continue a longstanding Mustang tradition of continuously offering fresh, new styling options for customers to empower them to make their Mustang an extension of who they are.”

Ford will offer the Ice White Edition package for both the Mustang coupe and the Mustang Mach-E.

Ice White Edition Mustang Mach-E

Ford’s current EV darling, the Mach-E, is currently one of the strongest contenders to Tesla right now. In the opinion of some reviewers, the Mach-E certainly has more style than a Tesla Model X. To draw customers who put more weight on style versus battery range; Ford is exclusively offering the new Mustang Ice White Edition Appearance Package on Mustang Mach-E Premium models.

The Mach-E Premium will be sprayed in “Star White Metallic Tri-Coat” paint and includes “Star White” mirror caps and wheel lip moldings. Ford refers to it as “icing out” the exterior. Seriously, they said that. The front grille will feature an “Oxford White” pony badge. The white badge will also feature on the rear of the car between the taillights. The package includes 19-inch wheels also finished in the same Oxford White paint found on the pony badges.

Anyone interested in adding this package to their 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E will be able to place their order this Fall, with cars shipping out to dealers early next year.

Ice White Edition Mustang Coupe

We speculate that Mustang Coupe buyers will be more likely to spring for this Ice White package. Nostalgia is a powerful influencer. Customers who may have been in their early teens back in ‘93 might have powerful memories of the white package on the 90s Mustang. It was a rare, coveted option. Ford only produced 1,500 Triple White Fox body Mustangs. By the way, all of those Mustangs were convertibles.

The Mustang Ice White Edition will be available for EcoBoost and GT Premium fastback models. Each car will be exclusively sprayed in Oxford White paint and has “iced-out” taillights and 19-inch wheels in matching Oxford White finish. Like the Ice White Edition Mustang Mach-E, the Ice White Mustang coupe will have Oxford White pony badges and fender badging.

EcoBoost and GT Mustangs with the Ice White package will start hitting dealerships next year.

Appealing to nostalgic enthusiasts is always a bold move for any automotive manufacturer, so the success of this package will likely dictate if Ford continues to have similar offerings in the future.
