The 1960s were a wild time in automotive history. Carmakers were throwing turbine engines into concepts, such as the Chrysler turbine car. Everything was geared toward a brighter, Jetson-like future. But Chevy used this time to become the front runner for all things electric with the Electrovairand Electrovan. And these two models would establish the brand as an electric car authority.

The 1964 Electrovair was Chevy’s first attempt to popularize electric cars

The Chevrolet Corvair was Chevy’s answer to the Volkswagen Beetle: a budget, compact car. The Beetle started at around $1,500 back in 1960, whereas the Corvair started at roughly $2,200. Still fairly cheap, though not quite as wallet-friendly as the Beetle. It also was an “American compact,” about two feet longer and seven inches wider than the Beetle it rivaled.

It even had an air-cooled, six-cylinder boxer engine mounted to the rear, and 15.6 cubic feet of cargo space up front. With room at the front and the back, Chevy saw it as the perfect candidate to electrify.

Rather than an 80 horsepower boxer engine, the Electrovair started a 90 horsepower electric motor, paired with a 450-volt electric battery. Though in 1966, Chevy revealed the Electrovair II, with 115 horsepower and a 532-volt silver-zinc battery. More advanced than its predecessor, the Electrovair could get up to 80 mph. And, when driven at low cruising speeds, could go 80 miles per charge.

Chevy never intended for the Electrovair to become a production car. But it was an example of how electric cars could perform, and an exploration of alternative fuel sources. But Chevy experimented with more than just battery-electric cars, as they happened to invent the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle just two years later.

The 1966 Electrovan was the first-ever hydrogen fuel cell car

The fuel cell Electrovan project was to match the acceleration, speed, and driving range of a typical van. And after stripping the interior of a GMC Handi-Van, engineers reworked the cabin to incorporate two massive tanks of liquid air and hydrogen. They tucked the tanks between the second and third row of seats, as well as 32 fuel cells under the floor. And while it was the first hydrogen-electric car ever made, it didn’t meet its initial goals.

While the Electrovan could hit a 70 mph top speed, acceleration and range were lacking. It took 30 seconds to get to that 70 mph top speed, and the range maxed out at 150 miles. On top of that, the Electrovan was somewhat dangerous, with the two tanks said to have exploded during tests. It left shrapnel in its wake, and soon enough, the project was canceled altogether.

But at the time, the Electrovan was considered the most advanced electric vehicle ever built. An initial effort to merge the practicality of filling up at the pump with the eco-friendly fuel cell power source. And Chevy is still going toward a zero-emissions future now.

How Electrovair and Electrovan impacted Chevy today

An all-electric Chevy Silverado was recently announced, set to rival the Ford F-150. It’ll ride on their in-house Ultium battery pack, which is also being used in Honda’s upcoming electric cars. However, Chevy is also looking at hydrogen fuel cell solutions for the military, as well as commercial truck use.

You can learn more about the Electrovair and Electrovan, as well as all the other Chevy hydrogen fuel cell and electric cars of yesteryear, on the GM Heritage website. And while it may not have directly impacted Chevy’s electro-future, they served as important stepping stones for the entire automotive industry. Instilling hope that electric cars would, some day, outmatch gas cars. And that day is rapidly approaching.

There are many different types of cars in the world. Cool cars, fast cars, muscle cars, practical cars, hydrogen cars, and much more. There are also plenty of vehicles that some would describe as “weird.” Cars that do not seem to fit any single category, or perhaps try too hard to fit into more than one at a time.

We’ve all seen at least one car on the road that caused us to double-take because we couldn’t figure out exactly what we were looking at. One such expert on odd cars with unconventional appeal is Doug DeMuro. Doug has made hundreds of YouTube videos about unique cars’ “quirks and features,” but some cars are quirky in and of themselves. In his latest video, he talks about the weirdest cars that are for sale today, brand new. We wanted to highlight a few of them.

Hyundai Santa Cruz truck

Hyundai Santa Cruz truck | Hyundai

The Hyundai Santa Cruz is “a little pickup truck crossover thing.” as DeMuro describes it. The Santa Cruz is based on the Hyundai Tuscon crossover SUV but with a truck body for what we can only guess is utility. The highest trim of the Santa Cruz truck comes equipped with a three-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes “nearly 300 horsepower.” Despite those numbers, we are doubtful that this truck would be able to tow very much weight. Instead, the Santa Cruz looks like something Hyundai built for people who want to say they own a “truck” but don’t have a large enough garage for something more traditional.

Doug predicts that the Hyundai Santa Cruz truck will “flop.” He even compares it to the Subaru Baja and states that the Santa Cruz truck’s popularity will likely not exceed that of the Bajas. He goes on to say that the Santa Cruz truck will not make it past one generation. We are curious if there are just enough “weird truck” fans out there to prove Doug wrong.

Mazda MX-30 crossover

Mazda MX-30 | Mazda

Technically the Mazda MX-30 is not out yet, but it will come to market soon, so that was enough for Doug to put this car on his list. The Mazda MX-30 will start its life as an all-electric vehicle, making it the first all-electric car that Mazda will ever produce. Later on, Mazda will offer a plug-in hybrid version of the MX-30 which will use a rotary engine as a generator to charge the battery.

The main reason why Doug considers the MX-30 to be a “weird” car is due to its shape. The MX-30 is a small crossover SUV but is styled like a coupe to appear to have two doors. However, there are two smaller doors on each side of the vehicle. Similar to what Mazda did with the RX-8, which is the last rotary-powered vehicle from the brand. Like the Santa Cruz truck, Doug believes that the Mazda MX-30 will be a “flop.”

We have only mentioned two cars in this article, but Doug calls out eleven cars that Anyone can buy brand new today. We agree that most of the cars on his list strike us as weird, but some others surprised us. That is the beauty of being a car enthusiast. Everyone has different opinions, but we all appreciate cars, even the weird ones.

The battle between the 2022 Ford Maverick and 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is really starting to heat up. We’re still learning more about these compact options, but we just found out that the Ford Maverick has an ace up its sleeve.

The 2022 Ford Maverick has a better fuel economy than the Hyundai Santa Cruz

2022 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid | Ford

So, we’ve known about the 2022 Ford Maverick having a standard hybrid powertrain for a while. It’s expected to get up to 40 mpg. But it has some underwhelming aspects. For example, it only has 191 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. Also, it currently can’t be paired with all-wheel drive.

So forget about off-roading and navigating through slippery conditions with the Maverick Hybrid for now. It could be updated to pair with AWD later. In the meantime, we’ve been excited about the more powerful engine option, but we worried that it would be thirsty and shouldn’t have been.

The 2.0-liter turbo-four engine provides 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with 30 mpg combined. Cracking 30 mpg is impressive.

How fuel-efficient is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz?

With the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, you get a 2.5-liter inline-four engine that pumps out 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. The higher amount of torque with the base engine is pretty enticing against the 2022 Ford Maverick. You can also upgrade to the turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four engine for 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque.

The base engine gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city, up to 27 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. But at least the base engine can be paired with AWD. With the turbocharged engine, you get 19 mpg in the city and 22 mpg combined. But it still gets up to 27 mpg on the highway.

The Ford Maverick’s hybrid engine is paired with an electric continuously variable transmission (eCVT). The gas-powered engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. There is no manual option.

With the Santa Cruz’s base engine, you get an 8-speed automatic transmission. But the turbo engine is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Hyundai Santa Cruz might be thirsty, but it’s expected to be faster and sportier than the Maverick.

Both trucks have a unibody design to drive more like a car than a truck. However, while the Santa Cruz is available now, we’re still waiting for the Maverick to hit the streets. Then we will see which option has a better performance.

Which truck has better features?

2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz | Hyundai

The 2022 Ford Maverick presents a good deal with a starting price of about $19,995, which is hard to beat. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz starts at about $23,990. These prices are listed before the destination fees, and dealership markups have been added.

When properly equipped, the Santa Cruz can tow up to 5,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,906. The Ford Maverick can tow up to 4,000 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,500 lbs. So, the Santa Cruz is a little more capable.

Both trucks offer a larger infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the Santa Cruz also has a digital cluster display. Safety features include forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking.

While the Maverick hits a home run by having a better fuel economy, the Santa Cruz offers a bit more muscle and tech. We can’t wait for the Maverick to arrive to provide a better performance comparison.
