Three of the world’s most popular V8s share a displacement of 5.7-liters–but their similarities end there. So is the best V8 truck engine Toyota’s high-tech I-Force, Dodge’s surprisingly fuel-efficient HEMI, or the immortal Chevy 350?

Toyota offers its full-size Tundra with a 5.7-liter V8. The 5.7 is the third generation of Toyota’s “UR” engine family. Toyota packed this engine, known internally as the 3UR-FE, with the advanced technology Toyota fans expect.

In 3UR-FE, the suffix F stands for economy narrow-angle valve double overhead cams (DOHC), and the suffix E stands for electronic fuel injection. The 3UR-FE also features Toyota’s proprietary Dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT-i) technology. The result is one of the best truck V8 engines: capable of 381 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 401 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm.

Toyota offers the 3UR-FE in the Sequoia, the Lexus LX 570, the Land Cruiser 200 Series, and the Tundra. In the U.S., Toyota advertises the engine as the I-Force V8.

The Tundra’s V8 is cast out of Bodine Aluminum and assembled at Toyota’s Huntsville, Alabama manufacturing plant. Tundras once came with several engine options, but so many Tundra buyers preferred the 5.7-liter V8 that, as of 2020, it is the only powerplant available.

In a 2WD 2021 Tundra, the 5.7-liter V8 achieves 13 city/17 highway mpg for a combined EPA rating of 15 mpg. In addition, the Tundra’s maximum tow rating is 10,200 pounds.

Dodge’s HEMI is the Best V8 Truck Engine for Fuel-Efficiency

The Dodge HEMI engine is a living legend. The HEMI engine’s long history began in the 1940s when Chrysler coaxed 2,500 horsepower out of an experimental V16 fighter plane engine by installing hemispherical combustion chambers. Engineers hoped for a better fuel-air mixture and found the walls of the unorthodox cylinder head also maintained a more consistent temperature and had room for larger valves–thus allowing more airflow.

A HEMI V8 first debuted in Chrysler’s 1951 models. Drag racers throughout the 1950s used the new engine, and modern championship drag racers base their engines on the original HEMI. Dodge launched the second generation of the HEMI with the NASCAR-dominating 426. Then, in 2003, Dodge debuted the third-generation HEMI, a modern aluminum, fuel-injected V8.

Today, the Dodge HEMI lives on in naturally-aspirated 5.7-liter and 6.5-liter variants, as well as a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI built by SRT. Stellantis offers Rams with several engines, though many buyers opt for the 5.7-liter HEMI, one of the best V8 truck engines.

For the 2009 model year, Dodge engineers updated the 5.7-liter HEMI with Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT)–the Dodge version of variable valve timing. In the Ram 1500, this V8 is rated for 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft. of torque.

One perennial complaint about the HEMI is that its large combustion chambers prevent it from being fuel-efficient. Dodge engineers solved this problem with a multi-displacement system (MDS) which shuts off half the cylinders whenever possible. In addition, Ram trucks are available with a mild-hybrid system branded as eTorque. This system includes an electric starter/launch engine to save gasoline. The resulting 2021 Ram 1500 is rated for 17 city/23 highway mpg and 19 mpg combined. The 5.7L HEMI-equipped Ram 1500 is rated to tow 11,610 pounds.

Chevrolet’s 350 Small Block is the Best V8 Truck Engine for Modifying

The Chevy 350 is a small-block V8 that displaces 350-cubic-inches, or 5.7-liters. It is the only engine on this list that is not available in a production pickup truck. But the Chevy 350 (also known as the SB 350) is one of the most popular hotrod engines of all time and is still installed in countless custom trucks.

When Chevrolet launched its Camaro in 1967, the top-trim Z28 came with a choice of big-block engines. But GM engineers wanted one high-output small block available for buyers seeking a more balanced Z28. So they lengthened the stroke of the already formidable 327 engine, increasing its displacement to 349.85 cubic inches, and the Chevrolet 350 was born.

The lightweight and powerful 350 became so popular that GM soon produced variants for nearly every vehicle in its lineup. With countless used 350s available, generations of engine-builders called on the mighty small block to make big power. No engine has more aftermarket modification options than the 350. Because. of its sheer adaptability, it is one of the best V8 truck engines.

GM continued to build variations of the 350 for nearly forty years, finally retiring the engine in 2005. The final version of this first-generation small-block was the Vortec 5700 L31. The stock L31 produces 255 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 350 lb-ft. of torque at 2,800 rpm. The final Chevrolet pickup truck available with the 350 was the 1998 Chevrolet C1500. The automatic transmission 2WD 5.7L C1500 is rated for 13 city/17 highway mpg for a combined 14 mpg and can tow 7,000 pounds.

Welcome the Jeep Grand Wagoneer back from the grave. The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has returned in a massive way, literally. It’s one substantial three-row SUV with tons of advanced bells and whistles to enjoy. But is it really as grand as it seems?

Is the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer worth buying?

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer | Jeep

Yes, if you want a capable SUV that includes tons of advanced tech and modern convenience features for your family, then you can’t go wrong with the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It provides space for your entire family, including the dog, to enjoy the finer life.

Critics are finally test driving the Grand Wagoneer around town and even taking it off-roading, and they’re finding it difficult to find any drawbacks. But there are three things that aren’t exactly loved.

1. The Grand Wagoneer is thirsty

If you’re interested in the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, you might not be concerned about fuel economy. If you can afford this beast, you can afford fuel. However, it only gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.

Yes, you read that correctly. It gets a whole 13 miles to the gallon. But this issue may be solved soon. Jeep plans to offer a hybrid model for each SUV soon. It’s possible that the Jeep Grand Wagoneer 4xe will arrive soon.

But the Wagoneer brings the heat. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 10,000 lbs. It can carry a payload of up to 1,500 lbs. So, sipping more fuel allows it to haul larger campers, trailers, boats, and more.

2. The 2022 Wagoneer is hefty

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is massive. It can weigh up to 6.450 lbs when fully ticked out. This amount of weight is hard to ignore. You may notice some jiggling in the cab as you ride over bumps and experience body roll-around curves.

The Wagoneer does have an independent rear suspension that’s made of aluminum and chassis tweaks to enhance on-road manners, though. Also, the light steering requires constant attention.

You get a 6.4-liter V8 engine with the Wagoneer that pumps out 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. Jeep estimates that it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about six seconds. So its hefty size doesn’t slow it down.

3. The Grand Wagoneer is excessive for off-roading

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has an MSRP of $86,995. But it is a grand vehicle, so it has tons of extra features, including enhanced off-roading capability. But usually, massive vehicles aren’t used for off-roading, and the Wagoneer isn’t trail-rated.

Larger SUVs can be too wide to easily fit on more narrow trails, and they could be too heavy for soft mud and sediment. Also, do people want to risk getting their $100,000 vehicle scruffed up by nature?

But if you do want to go off-roading, the standard Quadra-Drive II off-road system and all-terrain tires will conquer challenges reasonably well. It includes a standard electronic limited-slip differential and modes for Auto, Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock.

The Quadra-Life Air Suspension has five different height modes. One offers an additional 3.6-inches of lift. But maybe if an off-roading package was optional, then people could access some savings.

Formula 1 summer break usually takes place during July or August. This time gives the teams a break during some of the hotter months and allows for a regroup. However, the long summer break takes a toll on fans. What’s there to do? Watch the F1 Netflix series Drive to Survive season three and get to know all of the race cars on the track.

Why you should be watching Drive to Survive during the F1 break

F1: You Should Watch Drive to Survive Season 3 on Netflix | Netflix

First of all, F1 has gained a lot of fans in the last few years and Netflix is capitalizing on that. During quarantine, many people joined in and watched the races on ESPN. Because of this, some new fans might be a little lost in the drama of the 2021 season. Formula 1 Drive to Survive season 3 is an excellent way to catch up. Does Lewis Hamilton have the fastest car on the grid? It seems likely until the new Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car showed up.

Viewers will get to know the managers and teams from the 2020 season, which will help fans understand things better. The 2020 season brought a fair share of added drama with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting races, schedules, and drivers. The first episode follows the Australian Grand Prix and how the organizers canceled the race at the last minute due to the virus.

After that, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 team gets the rivalry with Red Bull Racing going in full force. Plus, the drama between Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas is subtle but always there.

Drive to Survive showcased the pink Mercedes F1 car drama

The best part about Drive to Survive is the drama. While most people watched the races on television or the internet, the Drive to Survive season 3 release was perfectly timed by Netflix. The first race of the 2021 season, the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, started less than two weeks later.

But before that could happen in real-time, fans got to see the reaction when the 2020 Racing Point car showed up looking like a photocopy of the Mercedes racecars. It even managed to get the nickname “the pink Mercedes.” This drama was all over the news, but Drive to Survive season 3 shows you the reaction from within the paddock.

Much of the start of the season discussed the introduction of Dual Axis Steering (DAS) to the Mercedes cars. Red Bull thought that would give the Mercedes cars an edge over the Red Bull cars, and it did. Drive to Survive shows the kerfuffle DAS caused behind the scenes and how Christian Horner felt about it.

One of the most intense parts of the entire Netflix season was when Romain Grosjean’s Haas crashed at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Haas car went into a metal barrier at 119 mph and exploded into a fireball. Thanks to the quick thinking of the marshalls on the track, Grosjean is able to escape unscathed.

Don’t skip on the older seasons of DTS

If you happen to have a lot of time to kill, the older seasons are good to watch as well. While some drivers and teams might not be around anymore, you get to see how some of the rivalries and friendships have evolved. In a sport where so much happens behind the scenes, Drive to Survive helps explain it.

Drive to Survive season 4 is bound to be another interesting one, even though the F1 season is not over yet. If you haven’t watched this Netflix series, you may want to give it a shot before the Belgian Grand Prix starts up.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Volkswagen Arteon, you’re not alone. It’s one of the automaker’s lesser-known and lesser-appreciated models, largely ignored by consumers and industry critics alike. Not that it’s necessarily a bad car. It just never really earned its place among the likes of more popular VW models like the Golf GTI and Golf R.

But with the introduction of the 2022 Volkswagen W Arteon, critics are saying this sedan will finally demand attention. In fact, if you had your heart set on a VW Golf R, you might find the 2022 Arteon an even more attractive option.

Where did the Volkswagen Arteon come from anyway?

2021 Volkswagen Arteon | 2021 Volkswagen of America, Inc. Newspress Limited

Volkswagen officially unveiled the Arteon in 2017 at the Geneva Motor Show and the Chicago Auto Show. But it wasn’t necessarily a groundbreaking introduction. At the time, Americans demanded crossovers and SUVs.

MotorTrend points out Volkswagen’s attempts to tweak the four-door sedan to improve its appeal. Lackluster sales and delays plagued this car’s success too. Plus, cars aren’t VW’s prominent focus — its sedan lineup consists of only the Golf GTI, Golf R, and less-than-sensational Arteon. But that’s about to change.

Upgrades you can expect with the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon

After striving to improve the Arteon’s luxury aesthetics without success, Volkswagen changed direction and opted for more power. The 2022 model’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine can now harnesses 300 hp instead of the previous 268 hp.

Additionally, VW ditched the old eight-speed automatic transmission and replaced it with a snappier seven-speed dual-clutch. The new Arteon will feel more like an energetic sports car and not the yawn-worthy sedan it may have felt like before.

Plus, the R-Line appearance package will be available across all trims, including the SE R-Line, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line, CNET reports. It adds 18-inch wheels, rear parking controls, and wireless phone charging for every Arteon configuration.

This sedan might even be better than the 2022 VW Golf R

Volkswagen recently released the insightful extras consumers can expect in the 2022 VW Golf GTI and Golf R. They get an updated 2.0-liter engine producing 241 hp and 315 hp, respectively. The GTI will start at $29,545, while the R will cost $43,645. Comparing these hatchbacks with the new Volkswagen Arteon, you might find the sedan far more attractive.

In addition to some of the updates mentioned above, the Arteon SEL R-Line gets 4Motion all-wheel drive as a standard upgrade, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels are available. Jalopnik applauds the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon’s makeover. And consumer comments include those from Golf R and Golf GTI owners, who’ve said that this car “makes more sense than the Golf R.”

Despite the Arteon’s price hike of $3,000, bringing its starting price to about $41,190 (destination charge included), it still might be the better buy than the Golf models. If you’re not overly concerned about 0-to-60-mph times and you want robust standard equipment and stylish appeal, the 2022 Arteon is worth a test drive.

If you’ve been like most industry critics, largely ignoring the Volkswagen Arteon in years past, it’s time to reconsider your stance. This quasi-luxury sedan is getting a serious upgrade, including R Line standard equipment and sportier power. You might even like it better than the VW Golf R, with its more affordable price tag too.
