Never heard of the Canoo electric pickup truck? That’s alright, neither had we. But after some rough paper napkin math, this cab-over motor electric truck may wind up being cheaper than the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning. It’s also a lot stranger, more of a concept than a feasible vehicle, which is why we’re emphasizing the “might.”

Canoo Electric Truck | Canoo

The Canoo electric truck is hypothetically cheaper than the F-150 Lightning.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck was debuted with a starting price of $39,774. In terms of electric pickup trucks, that’s pretty good, and even the base model work truck is packed with a backup generator and power outlets. It’s utilitarian to the max, capable of towing 7,700 lbs.

But the model most people will want to buy, with added creature comforts, longer range, and a better towing capacity bumps the price up to $55,000. In other words, that starting price is really only good for businesses who want a bare-bones electric truck. Something that’ll get them into the segment for as little money as possible.

Now, before we continue, it’s important to know that the Canoo is more than just a truck. It can also come as a “lifestyle vehicle,” which most would refer to as a minivan. The announced starting price for that was $34,750, but that’s for the delivery spec with just two seats and 1,400 lbs of payload capacity. The Premium spec, the third-highest trim available, will cost $49,950 and include a panoramic sunroof, seating for seven, and a more comfortable interior.

But what about the truck you ask? See, that’s where things get complicated. Canoo has yet to announce the prices of their electric pickup. But assuming it’s priced more like the Canoo Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle, we’d say it’d start closer to $40,000, and cost $45,000 for a consumer-oriented model. After all, no matter what Canoo electric truck trim you choose, they’ll all come with the same, multi-purpose bed.

The Canoo’s multi-purpose bed has aces up every sleeve

You’ve heard of Chevy’s multifunction tailgate, an impressive feature no doubt. But the Canoo electric truck is optimized in such a way where there are hidden tricks everywhere. We’ll start at the front and work our way back, with a fold-out workstation/desk.

Like the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, the Canoo electric truck has power outlets built-in. However, while the F-150 Lightning pro has four altogether (with others available), the Canoo stuffed six up front and three in the bed. And they claim that using your electrics all day long won’t even drain the battery by 10% of its charge. A lofty statement, but certainly impressive.

Moving onto the sides, there are two pull-out toolboxes that also serve as stepping stools. Store what you want in there, and climb in to get better access to the bed. But of all the nifty party tricks in the Canoo, the tailgate might be the coolest.

The Canoo starts with a six-foot bed, six inches longer than the Ford F-150 Lightning. But with a couple pulls, and that bed extends from six feet to eight feet long, adapting to all your storage and stuff transporting needs. The payload is also estimated to be 1,800 lbs, the exact same amount as the F-150 Lightning.

But, as previously mentioned, you probably hadn’t heard of the Canoo. That’s because neither the lifestyle vehicle nor the truck has been released to the public. And other than the bed’s functionality, all the numbers are speculation.

When will the Canoo electric truck be available?

Canoo hopes for the electric pickup truck to be available as early as 2023, with pre-orders open now. If you want to sink $100 on a completely refundable deposit, you’re more than welcome to. Though there are a few other tidbits of info you might want to know.

Because these are all estimates, there’s no way of knowing exactly what the Canoo will be like yet. They claim it’ll get over 200 miles of range per charge, which is about where the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning’s 230-mile base range sits. And they aim to achieve over 500 horsepower, more than the 426 horsepower of the base lightning, and right around the 563 hp of the extended range package.

But again, whether the Canoo will live up to those, or even make it to production, is up for debate. Far too many of these promising electric cars never leave the factory floor, with the big names moving too fast and having too big a budget for new independents to compete. That said, we hope to see the Canoo on the road someday soon.

If you need a minivan, we can’t think of a cooler-looking one out today than Hyundai’s Staria flagship van. It looks almost like a spaceship next to what is available right now. Hyundai just launched the new van in Germany this week.

A lot of features come with the Staria Signature trim

Only the top-of-the-line Signature trim will initially be available. Standard features include electric sliding doors, heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, a smart key system with a stop/start button, ambient lighting with a rainbow of color options, and rear sun blinds. If you go for the all-wheel-drive option, it sells for $68,124.

By next year Hyundai will make available the lower-trim models. The base price will be just under $47,000. Besides the Signature options listed above, there is a gang of other noteworthy features.

Lower-trim Staria minivans still get a gang of features

Individual seats are available in the second row. They come with backrest and leg rest adjustments. All seat rows have USB ports for passengers, with a three-zone climate control system keeping things comfy. Bluelink telematics is available as well. Four interior color choices are available. Extra-cost exterior colors are Creamy White finish, and five mineral effect colors listed for a bit above $1,000 extra.

A unique feature is the “Passenger View” wide-angle camera. It lets the driver and front passenger monitor what’s going on behind them. Viewing is done through the 10.25-inch infotainment screen in the dash.

Right now only the 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine is available. It puts out 175 hp and 318 lb-ft of torque. Hooked onto the back is an eight-speed automatic transmission with front-wheel drive as standard.

Why won’t Hyundai sell this in the US?

There are quite a few intelligent assist features as well. Autonomous emergency brake assist, active blind spot assist, and a rear passenger seat alert system. For Germany only, the Staria also comes with a 12-speaker Bose audio system. There is even a panoramic glass roof offered for $1,405.

At this time Hyundai has no plans to bring the Staria over to the US. We don’t know why. While not conventional-looking, that would be a selling feature here. Already available in Australia, maybe once Hyundai gets up to speed in production, maybe it will reconsider and begin bringing this minivan into the US.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar is the latest and wildest creation from the British car group, exuding the racing history of the brand with modern design and engineering to produce a car that is nothing short of a masterpiece. With low production numbers and a high price tag, the newest addition to the Aston Martin lineup is sure to impress, and if reports are correct, it drives like a street-legal Formula 1 car.

Upon first glance, the Aston Martin Valkyrie is something different — designed to look like a street-legal Formula 1 racecar while still maintaining the small nuances that make the car iconically Aston Martin. The front fascia shares the same characteristics of the F1 racecars many fans have come to know and love, with a front lip that promotes optimal aerodynamics that makes it look like a mix between a real racecar and a spaceship. The radical design of the car makes it look almost unreal or concept-like, with a side and rear profile that is just as striking and foreign as the front.

“Outlandish speed, otherworldy performance”

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is designed to perform as close to a Formula 1 racecar as legally allowed on the street — which actually sounds kind of terrifying if you take into consideration how much finesse it takes to drive one of these incredibly fast machines. The Valkyrie produces an impressive 1140 bhp provided by an impressive 6.5-liter V12 engine. This hypercar isn’t just powerful, either, as the lightweight design removes all steel components for a complete carbon design to provide drivers with an unreal power-to-weight ratio that makes the car as fun to handle as it is to accelerate.

“The entire Aston Martin Valkyrie programme has been an extraordinary adventure in engineering”

Tobias Moers, Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer

Pricing and prestive of the Aston Martin Valkyrie

The Aston Martin Valkyrie is set to be produced in extremely low numbers with only 150 street-legal models set to be produced, fitting the bill as a low-production and exclusive hypercar. There will be a track-only version available, the Valkyrie AMR Pro, as well as a Spyder model, which features the ultimate aerodynamics package. The car is set to have a starting price of around $3 million, which only increases with special packages, models, and additional luxury and performance options.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie’s high price and exclusivity combine with the amazing handling and performance to produce a competitive hypercar in a market where cars are getting faster, smarter, and better year after year. With a rich racing heritage and sights set toward the future, there is no doubt that we will be seeing some impressive numbers from the Valkyrie both on and off the track.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and 2022 Ford Maverick are making waves in the truck world. They’re brand new ideas, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Both clean up Ford’s carbon footprint, though the zero-emissions F-150 Lightning electric truck has the upper hand. But that doesn’t mean the Maverick is a gas guzzler, more like the opposite.

2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid XLT | Ford

The Ford Maverick is a compact, city oriented, fuel efficient truck

With a hybrid powertrain, people question the legitimacy of the 2022 Ford Maverick. Is it really a truck, and is it a good one? There are certain aspects the Maverick is lacking in, but one area the Maverick beats out the competition: fuel efficiency.

Under the hood is a 2.5L four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, rated at 191 horsepower. But with that setup, you’ll get 40 city/33 highway/37 combined. The Maverick is no doubt built for the city, its compact size making narrow street navigation a breeze. But just because it’s a fuel sipper doesn’t mean it’s a sissy when it comes to capability.

Ford claims 4.5-foot bed is able to hold 1,500 lbs of payload, and the base models can tow 2,000 lbs. That said, if you upgrade to a 250 horsepower 2.0L turbocharged engine (non-hybrid), and tack on an extra $725 for a towing package, that number jumps up to 4,000. So if you need to tow a car, that’s the option to go for. How exactly this will affect MPGs remains untested. But the non-hybrid powertrain, and towing in general, will surely make an impact.

Then there’s the trim levels, starting with the incredibly bare-bones on the base XL model. It lacks cruise control, power mirrors, and power locks for the tailgate. Upgrading to the XLT gives those creature comforts back, and adds some nicer rims to the mix. However, if you’re looking for more strength and science fiction technology, then you ought to consider the F-150 Lightning

The Ford F-150 Lightning is tougher, and more technologically advanced

2022 F-150 Lightning Pro Electric Truck
2022 F-150 Lightning Pro Electric Truck | Ford

Unlike the Maverick, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is all-wheel drive as standard. And right away you’ll notice a power difference, with 426 horsepower from two electric motors on just the base model. On top of that, you get a whopping 775 lb-ft of instant torque, one of the many perks to electric vehicles (other than going green).

With that added power, comes added payload and towing capacities. Ford claims the base model can carry 1,800 lbs in its 5.5-foot bed, and tow 7,700 lbs. If you upgrade to the extended range package, the beefier battery gets that towing capacity up to 10,000 lbs, and even raises the horsepower to 563.

But the tech doesn’t stop there. While the Maverick has an available 110-volt, the base model F-150 Lightning Pro is engineered to power your house in the event of an outage. So long as your electric truck is plugged into a wall outlet at home, the truck can divert its power to keep the lights on for up to three days. For comparison, a single 110-volt outlet might be able to power a small electric stove.

And there is no shortage of power outlets, with four scattered across the work truck base model. Adding up to 2.4 kW of power, you get two in the cabin, two in the bed. But that can be bumped up to 9.6 kW, which adds two more 120-volt outlets and a 240-volt AC outlet to the bed. And all that power can be limited to prevent your F-150 Lightning from losing too much charge.

Now, the attentive reader will realize I’ve shied away from a few important aspects of the new car buying process. In order to figure out which truck is right for you, we have to take a look at the lifestyle you lead, and the price of each.

Which of these trucks, electric or otherwise, is right for you?

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Maverick
2022 Ford F-150 Lightning (Top) and Ford Maverick (Bottom) | Ford

The base model 2022 Ford Maverick is set to start at $19,995, an impressively low number until you remember that this is the work truck version. For all the features you’d actually want, the XLT trim will cost about $23,775. But that is still significantly cheaper than the F-150 Lightning, which starts at $39,974 (before destination fees). And then there’s the elephant in the room: an electric truck will only have so much range.

If you drive the Maverick in the city, getting 40 mpg, the estimated range would be about 552 miles (with it’s 13.8-gallon fuel tank). The Ford F-150 Lightning Extended Range model, with tacks $10,000 onto the starting price, will only ever get you 300 miles per charge. Not to mention the slower charge times of electric cars.

If you don’t go that far in a day, can charge your truck overnight, and need the towing capabilities, then the F-150 is an excellent choice. After all, in terms of electric trucks, it is one of the cheapest. But if range anxiety gets the best of you, and you really don’t need that much strength, the Maverick is an excellent budget choice.
