Have you ever wondered why the Nissan Skyline R34 had such a tumultuous time in the U.S.? There were many restrictions on importing vehicles back when Nissan Skyline R34 GTR was immensely popular, thanks to people like Paul Walker. Cars like the Skyline were not made here and had to be imported through a complicated process. But what’s the scandal here?

The story of MotoRex and the Nissan Skyline

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection page about importing, cars that were less than 25 years old from the date of manufacture were subject to different rules. This made importing popular vehicles like the Nissan Skyline R34 GTR, Skyline R33, and others impossible to get into the country. This is where the importer MotoRex comes in.

In 1999, MotoRex owner Hiro Nanahoshi was importing the cars and attempting to get the vehicles up to U.S. standards. That meant windshields, crash tests, smog testing, etc. According to an old Super Street article written by Richard Chang, these are the specifics of the crash tests.

“In the front crash test report to the D.O.T., filed on November 17, 1998, the R33 Nissan Skyline [GTS – note- Sam] used in the test is referred to as a 1999 A.I. Craft GTR 2 Door.”

The tests included front, rear, and side-impact ratings. These ratings were then sent to the D.O.T. for approval to J.K. Technologies in Baltimore, Maryland. J.K. Technologies was another importer that focused on legalizing European cars.

Modifying the Skyline for the U.S. streets

In the process, the companies adjusted the Skyline’s door bar. MotoRex did other modifications once the car landed in the country as well. By the time 1999 rolled around, the first Skyline was tested by the government and passed. “MotoRex received E.P.A. approval by installing three additional catalytic converters to each Skyline,” Chang explained.

After that, one final smog test remained, the IM240. One guy named Sean Morris was working with Motorec on side-impact crash testing and commented on the issue. He noted MotoRex received the first bond release from the D.O.T. for the car on November 15, 1999. After that, the MotoRex name was everywhere in the car scene.

Morris explained that even though the business was blowing up in the community, the business model didn’t make sense. The company would bring in some Nissan Skyline R34, R32, and Skyline R33 models, which cost under $50,000. The process of importing and legalizing the car was around $16,000, but that didn’t go very far. At some points, only three cars a month would come through.

The beggining of the end for this importer

Once the vehicles arrived, it was still a slow process. After a few years, Nanahoshi seemed over the pressure. Cars started to pile up in the warehouse and didn’t go anywhere. One customer went to pick up the vehicle, and Nanahoshi had no idea where it was. The D.O.T. hadn’t sent the paperwork back yet, and the car was MIA. As this started to happen more and more, people started alerting the D.O.T. and even the police.

MotoRex started releasing cars without permission from the D.O.T. Some people knew about it and took the risk, but others had no idea. By the time 2005 rolled around, things were further falling apart. The D.O.T told MotoRex the registered importer status was at risk, but Nanahoshi didn’t care by then.

“On November 28, 2005, the D.O.T. [NHTSA OMVC] tentatively rescinded the import eligibility of all Skylines, except those of the ‘96-’99 model years.”

Richard Chang | Super Street Magazine

Once the investigation began, the D.O.T. found 17 Skylines that did not have the proper modifications to drive on the streets. MotMotoRexorex had the opportunity to comply, but that didn’t happen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revoked MotoRex’s registration on February 15, 2006. MotMotoRexorex owed money to people and had made a lot of enemies. The Skyline story doesn’t end there, but the story of Motorex being a legit importer does.

Some Skylines are old enough to come into the U.S. without such strict rules these days. Though these are still popular vehicles, you see Nissan Skylines and Nissan GT-Rs on the road fairly regularly, without the help of MotoRex.

The results of a recent survey showed that attractive people are more likely to buy white BMWs and Black Audis. Those same drivers also exhibited the worst driving techniques. Finance Buzz interviewed 1,200 people for those opinions, as well as how good of a driver they think they are. This data corresponds to their responses regarding their driving history. Whether or not their driving mishaps occurred at the beginning of their driving career, and now are much more skilled for it, the data doesn’t lie. This does not mean that overly cautious drivers are great drivers, but considering the data alone, it’s tough to argue. Here are some interesting data points from this survey.

How good are you really?

Finance Buzz asked drivers to rate their own driving skills on a scale of 1-10. The survey showed that 26-percent of the people think of themselves as great, 10-out-of-10 drivers, while only 1.98-percent rated themselves a 4-out-of-10. Unfortunately, 75-percent who rated themselves an eight or higher were also the worst drivers according to their own driving history. The drivers who pegged themselves as perfect drivers experienced the most traffic stops, received the most tickets, and have been in the most accidents. This also means they could be prone to other bad driving habits, like cutting off other drivers or going slow in the passing lane. BMW drivers appear to perpetuate this behavior.

Drivers who rated themselves a nine weren’t far behind. In fact, drivers who rated themselves an eight, seven, six, and four all scored within a few points of each other. The best drivers were actually the ones rated a five. Those drivers experienced the fewest traffic stops, received the fewest tickets, and had been in the fewest accidents.

Which drivers are safer?

Taking the data from a different light shows some silver linings. Out of the top ten brands the worst drivers drive, Buick, Volkswagen, and Kia are among the least likely to be driven by bad drivers. Hyundai drivers receive the least tickets and traffic stops, and have been in the least amount of accidents. Buick, Volkswagen, and Kia aren’t among the top three brands to engage in bad driving behavior, according to the survey.

However, they’re also not among the top 10 brands that the most attractive people drive. This survey deems Jeep, Lexus, and Ford among the least likely to be driven by attractive drivers, who would also pick either orange, gold, or yellow as their car’s color. By this data alone, Hyundai drivers might rate themselves a 5-out-of-10 in terms of their skill level.

While it’s fun to look at survey results, the thing to remember is this data is based on an average. The data for most accidents, traffic tickets, and amount of times pulled over pertains to the drivers’ entire time as a licensed driver. Drivers who got into more accidents and received more tickets towards the beginning of their driving career may have learned from those mistakes and became better drivers for it. Regardless, it’s always the best idea to remain vigilant while on the road.

If saving dollars makes you holler, then you’re in the right place. We have five of the best SUVs for the value—options like the 2021 Kia Telluride, Toyota Highlander to stretch your money further. A few of the best SUV options may even surprise you.

The best SUVs for the value

2021 Toyota Highlander | Toyota

This list of the best SUVs for the money includes midsize options that have been ranked by TrueCar. Each vehicle has been ranked utilizing a rating system based on customer surveys, industry research, and data collected by vehicle experts. Comfort, amenities, efficiency, performance, utility, and tech each impact the score.

The top five SUVs with the most value include:

  1. 2021 Kia Telluride
  2. 2021 Toyota Highlander
  3. 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe
  4. 2021 Kia Sorento
  5. 2021 Mazda CX-9

1. The 2021 Kia Telluride is value packed

2022 Kia Telluride | Kia

The 2021 Kia Telluride has an MSRP of about $32,190 and provides luxury finishes without the luxury price. Seriously, it provides a spacious and comfortable interior that’s quiet and provides a smooth ride.

While providing enough space for the whole family, the Telluride also brings some muscle to the table. It was a 3.8-liter V6 engine with 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is optional, and it can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

The only potential drawbacks include a just OK fuel economy with an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and up to 26 mpg on the highway. Also, while the Kia Telluride has a stout acceleration, it handles like a larger SUV with a little body roll around curves.

2. The 2021 Toyota Highlander stretches that dollar

The next best SUV for the money is the 2021 Toyota Highlander, which has an MSRP of $35,085. It has an economical 3.5-liter V6 engine with 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. It gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and up to 29 mpg on the highway, but the hybrid variant gets up to 36/35 mpg.

You can’t go wrong with the upscale quality materials in the interior. Plus, you get tons of standard safety features such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance.

However, the Toyota Highlander lacks cargo space compared to rivals, and the third-row seat is a little tight. Other rivals may offer a faster acceleration and a sportier ride too.

3. 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is too fresh to ignore

You can’t have a list of the best SUVs without mentioning the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe and its MSRP of $27,000. It has a premium cab filled with luxurious materials and provides a comfortable ride.

The Santa Fe includes many standard features, including adaptive cruise control and forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection. The gas-powered engine gets up to 25 mpg in the city, and the hybrid powertrain gets up to 36 mpg.

But the Santa Fe doesn’t have a third row of seats. Also, the second row is a little tight and limits versatility. It can only tow 3,500 lbs, so keep that in mind if you have a bigger camper or trailer to haul.

4. The 2021 Kia Sorento makes a best SUV

2021 Kia Sorento | Kia

The 2021 Kia Sorento is the second Kia option to make it on this of best SUVs list with its MSRP of $29,390. It provides the perfect blend of passenger space and efficiency. The new hybrid option offers up to 39 mpg in the city!

This seven-seater vehicle has eight different trim levels to choose from. Plus, it includes forward collision warning, lane-keeping assistance, and more. You can equip it with all-wheel drive to tackle slippery situations too.

However, the Kia Sorento has limited space in the third row, and rivals provide a little more cargo space. The handling is pretty secure, but the Sorento isn’t exactly sporty. It also only tows up to 3,500 lbs.

5. The 2021 Mazda CX-9 deserves your attention

2021 Mazda CX-9 | Mazda

Last but not least, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 is definitely one of the best SUVs for the value. It has an MSRP of $34,160. You can’t beat its luxurious interior that’s filled with soft-touch materials for the ultimate level of comfort.

The Mazda CX-9 is fun to drive with a peppy acceleration and sporty handling. Plus, it has a third row but has agile handling. For a larger SUV, it’s shockingly agile and easy to maneuver in tight city areas.

But the CX-9 isn’t the best family hauler. It has a pretty tiny third row. It can also get expensive pretty quickly as you move up in trim levels.

Finding one of the best SUVs for the money isn’t difficult. You can go with the Kia Telluride for optimal space and comfort. The Santa Fe is a luxurious midsize option with plenty of standard features. The Highlander offers premium safety and more. One of these options certainly checks all of your boxes.

Comprehensive results of a recent survey concluded the opinion that drivers who are considered attractive are more likely to buy certain brands of cars in specific colors. Finance Buzz interviewed 1,200 American adults for the survey which was enough to unveil some interesting findings. The survey went on to include driving habits and perceived skill level behind the wheel, but for now, these are the brands and colors attractive people are more likely to buy, according to the survey.

Most attractive people drive black, white, and red cars

Infographic from Survey | Finance Buzz

Finance Buzz’s survey showed that among the 1,200 applicants, 26-percent said attractive people are likely to drive black cars. A further 25-percent voted white, while 24-percent voted red. The rest dispersed among blue, silver, gray, and other non-specified colors. As it turns out, however, owners of white and black cars are more likely to commit multiple atrocities while driving.

Another part of the survey determined owners of white and black cars are more likely to weave in and out of traffic. They are also more likely to drive under the speed limit, go slow in the passing lane, drive with high beams, drive with poorly secured cargo, and use the horn excessively. White alone qualified for even more ill-advised driving habits. Drivers of white color cars also qualified for receiving the most tickets, be in the most accidents, and were more likely to be pulled over. What’s more, a black color car is less likely to hold its value than a brighter color car.

According to the survey, 24-percent voted BMW as the brand attractive people are most likely to drive. Mercedes-Benz trailed in a not-so-close second at just under 10-percent, with Audi in third at 5-percent. Jeep brought up the rear with just under 3.5-percent. Unfortunately for BMW drivers, they also qualified on top of most of the data surrounding bad driving habits.

BMW drivers are likely to behave in the exact same ways as white car drivers, with the added bonus of cutting off other drivers. The survey also exhibited some contradictory information, where both the best and worst drivers own BMWs. Apparently, there is a correlation between attractive people buying white BMWs and causing all kinds of highway mischief. Drivers most likely to be pulled over, receive tickets, and be in accidents apparently drive BMWs.

The runners-up aren’t far behind. Black cars are second to white cars when it comes to traffic stops, tickets, and accidents. Audis are second to BMWs for the same metric, and for every bad driving behavior that BMW participated in, Audi was right alongside.

Stripped down to nuts and bolts, this survey says that white BMW drivers and black Audi drivers are among the most dangerous, and most attractive drivers on the road. Remember the opinions of 1,200 adults drive this part of the survey. BMW drivers and Audi drivers alike, prove the survey wrong.
