If you’re currently leasing a car and you can’t afford the lease payments, or if your lease is up, you have the option to sell the car in order to terminate the lease. By selling your car lease to a third party like Carmax or Carvana, you can not only get rid of those pesky monthly payments, but you could even stand to make a profit, until now. As of late, some automakers are requiring lessees to return the car to the original dealer they leased it from.

Why would anyone want to sell their leased car?

Don’t get us wrong, it’s easy to return your leased car back to the original dealer or another one of the brand’s franchised dealerships. However, doing so can cost you a considerable amount of money. U.S. News reports that if your leased car has a low amount of miles or is worth more than its predicted residual value, you might not see the potential profits like you would if you sold it to a third-party dealer.

For example, I sold my leased 2019 Subaru Forester to Carvana late last year. I was only one year into the lease when I decided that I didn’t need the car anymore, so I received the payoff amount from the leasing company and had the car appraised through Carvana. The payoff amount was around $24,000, which is the amount that would need to be paid to own the car free and clear. Surprisingly, Carvana offered me around $27,000 (based on the current market conditions), which meant selling it to them would yield a nearly $3,000 profit.

However, depending on which brand of car that you’re currently driving, you may not be able to do what I did. A few automakers, mainly GM and Honda, are now restricting their lessees from selling their cars to third-party retailers like Carmax and Carvana.

Why are they restricting lessees from selling their cars?

There are a few reasons why brands like GM and Honda are currently restricting lessees from selling their cars to other retailers. The first reason is that there are currently fewer cars on dealer lots. Thanks to the global chip shortage, dealer lots have been void of their usually stocked new and used car inventories and now the automakers need to make up for the shortage in some way. One easy way for them to do it is to require their lessees to sell or trade their current cars back to their dealers in order to help fill their lots.

The second reason is profit. Instead of lessees getting the profits from selling their leased cars to third parties, Honda and GM are now looking to reap some of those profits by re-selling those leased cars instead. The chip shortage has skewed the used car market upward this year and by requiring all leased Honda and GM vehicles to go back to their own dealers, the brands can capitalize on the car’s higher values by re-selling them.

The third reason that automakers are restricting lessees from selling their cars to other vendors is to mitigate some of the competition. The pandemic brought an uptick in business to “no-hassle, no-haggle” dealers like Vroom, Carmax, and Carvana. This provided a lot of competition to the traditional car dealerships since consumers (like myself) were selling their cars to these companies and padding their inventories. By getting rid of the ability for consumers to sell to third parties, there will be less competition for brands like GM and Honda.

How to get around these lease-end limitations

If you’re currently leasing a Honda or GM vehicle and are nearing the end of your lease, then there is a way to circumvent the restrictions. At the end of the lease term, you can purchase the car outright and sell it yourself to whomever you want. Just note that this strategy can end up being costly as you’ll need to pay for the car’s taxes and registration fees after you purchase it. You may also need to take out a loan to cover the cost of the car, which will accrue interest.

You can also elect to trade the car in for a new model as both Honda and GM might have special deals for current lessees. However, different regions will have different deals. Hopefully, the market will stabilize soon enough that automakers will lessen these restrictions. But for now, don’t take your leased Honda or GM car to a third-party dealer, you could be turned away.

Several celebrities have extensive car collections, but Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld are known for having quite possibly the biggest collection of cars. Leno has close to 200 cars in his collection, which he often shows off on his show, Jay Leno’s Garage. Seinfeld has also shown off his car collection on the Netflix show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, though he does not have as many cars as Leno. The two collections are often compared in terms of whose collection is worth more, who has more rare cars, and whose collection is better. Who has the better collection depends a lot on personal preference, but as far as who has more rare cars in their collection, let’s take a look.

Who has more rare cars: Jay Leno or Jerry Seinfeld?

The rarity of a car is usually based on the limited availability of that car, which is not limited to vintage cars. For example, Jay Leno owns one of the only two Koenigsegg CCXR Trevitas manufactured in 2010, with a white carbon fiber weave that was so complex to make that only two were completed. Additionally, while both Leno and Jerry Seinfeld have rare cars in their respective collections, Leno is definitely the winner in this regard, with a wide variety of rare cars that are both vintage and modern cars with a limited production, such as the Trevita.

Jay Leno’s collection features a variety of rare cars

With close to 200 cars in his collection, Jay Leno has dozens of cars that could be considered rare, but several stand out in terms of rarity. HotCars put together a list of Leno’s rarest cars, including the previously mentioned Trevita. Leno also owns a few McLarens, which he has admitted is his favorite carmaker, but his 1994 McLaren F1 is the rarest McLaren he owns. Only 106 F1s were produced, and the 627-hp V12 engine made it the fastest car in the world at that time, going 231 mph, and it still holds the title of the world’s fastest naturally aspirated road car. In 1994, an F1 would cost around $850,000. Now, these rare cars go for $12 million or more.

Designed by Jay Leno himself, the GM EcoJet has a Honeywell LTS101 turbine engine, more commonly seen in helicopters, with two separate fuel tanks that run on either bio-fuel or kerosene and puts out 650 horsepower for a top speed of 245 mph. The EcoJet is virtually impossible to put a value on because it is the only one ever made. He also owns a 1925 Doble Steam car, which took a more modern approach to steam cars, with an electronic ignition getting things started, and cost $10,000 in 1925. Unfortunately, Ford was already producing Model T’s that only cost $260, so this particular more modern steam car never took off.

Jerry Seinfeld’s collection features a massive number of Porsches

Jerry Seinfeld has several rather rare cars in his collection, but his collection is known more for the vast number of Porsches he owns. According to HotCars, several of those Porsches are also quite rare. One of those is a 1949 Porsche 356, built at Porsche’s first plant in Gmund, Austria, and is from the first production run of the 356, worth over $700,000. He also owns a 1983 Porsche 959, which, since Porsche did not submit enough models to be tested, is actually illegal to drive in the U.S. and is valued at over $1 million.

Seinfeld also owns a bright yellow 1971 Ferrari 365 Daytona that sells for a quarter of a million dollars today, even though it does not have a stellar reputation in terms of reliability. Interestingly, Leno does not own a single Ferrari, and according to one report, it’s not because he dislikes Ferraris because they are “a pain in the a**!”

Whether you are a fan of Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari, or vintage steam cars, it is easy to agree that both Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld have extraordinary car collections. More importantly, they take care of those cars, which is invaluable to a collector or gearhead.

In recent years, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has transformed into a vehicle that considerably deviates from its origins. Back in the late 1970s, it was first developed as a military vehicle that could provide high-level off-road capabilities. Later, rescue services and fire departments used the G-Class to access difficult-to-reach places on rough terrain. However, lately, the G-Class is frequently used as a status symbol by sports stars and rap artists. Also, many people and custom shops modified the G-Class in often wild and crazy ways. One of the most ridiculous recent examples of this is the “G-Boss,” which is not easy on the eyes.

The G-Boss G-Class is an ode to bumblebees, school buses, and the early 2000s

The gaudy G-Boss is a G-Class kit created by G&B Design in Recklinghausen, Germany. It’s difficult to figure what type of customer would buy the G-Boss or who might find it attractive. Perhaps this is the case if you’re a lover of bumblebees, a school bus enthusiast, or want to relive your glory days from the early 2000s.

Despite the dubious styling of the G-Boss, G&B Design is not new to the automotive customization game, as it has been doing for more than a decade. The G-Boss builds off of an already luxurious and fancy W463 G-Wagon and takes it to extreme levels of absurdity.

The front of the G-Boss features integrated evil-eye headlights, a “futuristic-looking hood and front apron,” a two-part front lip, a roof spoiler with three LED units, and a matching grille. The side of the G-Boss has wide wheel arches and side skirts. For the back, G&B Design fitted the G-Boss with an enormous two-piece diffuser, carbon fiber mirror caps, and a carbon fiber spare wheel cover. Also, the G-Boss has custom 24-inch wheels.

The interior of the G-Boss is just as painfully ugly as the exterior

The view doesn’t get any better in the cabin of the G-Boss. It features a similar bumblebee/school bus look as the exterior, with a black and yellow color-matching scheme for the leather. Also, there is no shortage of carbon fiber in the interior. You can soak it up until your heart’s content. Additionally, G&B borrows from the Rolls-Royce starry night theme with G-Boss lettering on the headliner.

Perhaps, if you keep an open mind, you can take a “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” perspective with the G-Boss. However, this is not an easy endeavor, for the G-Boss stretches this notion to the breaking point. If you truly believe that the G-Boss is an attractive modification of the G-Class, then don’t let the doubters kill your enjoyment. Go buy a G-Class and jam out to the Backstreet Boys on your iPod while you reminisce about a more innocent time during the early aughts.

Just when you think the potholes can’t get any worse, someone goes and plants a banana tree in one. When it comes to car safety, potholes can be a major cause for concern. How do potholes form and is there anything people can do about it?

Why did someone plant a banana tree in a pothole?

Someone Planted a Banana Tree in This Pothole | WPLG Local 10 Via YouTube

Drivers in Fort Myers, Florida, were fed up with one large pothole in particular. According to WPLG Local 10, the pothole was known for taking out cars as customers drove along the street. The road is a private drive but the county said there would be no assistance with the crumbling road.

Since Honda Drive is private, Lee County said the owners along the road are responsible to fix the potholes. After the tree was planted, drivers had a hard time navigating the road in certain vehicles. You could got around the new tree, but there were more potholes as the road continued.

By the end of the next day, the pothole banana tree had been run over. It isn’t clear if someone was upset about the tree and ran it over to make a counterpoint, or if someone didn’t see the tree in the dark and ran it over. For now, the tree and the caution tape surrounding it lay defeated on the ground.

What is a pothole in a road?

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, a pothole usually forms due to water seeping into the pavement. This is more common during winter months when the water freezes and expands. Overtime, the crack in the pavement combined with the weight of traffic can cause the pavement to get a hole in it.

There isn’t anything an individual can do about a pot hole, for the most part. Most states have a crew that works fixing potholes on state-maintained roads. If you know of a large hole on a road, most states have an online pothole reporting system. In addition to that, you can often file a property damage claim from damage sustained from a pothole. Drivers can request reimbursement for vehicle damage, but that can be a lengthy process. However, in the case of the banana tree fix, the state wouldn’t be required to fix the hole in the road.

Weather and traffic have a major impact on roads

RELATED: Why Your Local Potholes Aren’t Getting Fixed

Many people think that potholes aren’t as severe in Florida because there is no snow, but that is not the case. One of the major causes of potholes in Florida is the constant traffic. Roads are always packed with vehicles which can cause the roads to deteriorate faster. In the area that the banana tree was located, many big trucks and commercial vehicles are constantly driving on the road. Since this is a smaller private drive, the road might not have been made for so much weight.

In the video footage of the area, there is standing water covering parts of the road. Standing water can cause damage to the roads after being stepped inside. The summer rain can help further erode streets and conceal a large pothole. The weather in Florida has a major impact on the quality of roads, which can be in dire need of repair.

It isn’t suggested that you plant a tree in any potholes, but the banana tree bandit got the point across. Perhaps someone will step up to fix the road before anymore trees pop up overnight. Until vehicles are equipped with pothole detection technology, drivers have to be aware of holes in the road.
