The car buying process is stressful enough as it is. These days the process also adds supply issues, sky-high prices, and a pandemic. Consumer Reports has some tips on buying a used car, such as the importance of mileage and age. Don’t overlook getting an inspection, a Carfax report, and considering the technology included with the vehicle.

Consumer Reports: Consinder the age vs. mileage

When it comes down to it, buyers are often faced with choosing an older vehicle or a vehicle with more miles. Especially these days, when cars sit on lots of short periods of time unless there is something undesirable about it. Consumer Reports says that there are a few ways to get the information needed to buy a good car.

One of the first suggestions was to check the maintenance and repair records thoroughly. Ideally, the previous owner maintained the car at the correct intervals throughout its former life. If the mileage is suspiciously low, it is a good idea to check how long it has been on the lot. Gabe Shenhar, associate director of Consumer Reports’ auto test program, notes that buyers do not want a car that has been sitting for a while.

Sometimes, vehicles with higher mileage might need an expensive repair right away. Two examples could be a timing belt or fuel pump replacement. If that is the case, be sure to factor this into the price of the car.

Consumer Reports says extra safety features are worth buying

In addition to this, it is a good idea to consider the technology. Jennifer Stockburger from Consumer Reports says, “I would lean more toward newer vehicles, even if it has more miles.” This doesn’t just mean the seats or Apple CarPlay, but with safety features. Vehicles make giant leaps between years with safety and fuel economy.

Some of the safety equipment could include electronic stability control, forward collision warning, blind-spot warning, and various other things. These features make you and other drivers safer. So if the vehicle has 5,000 more miles but is three years newer, it might make sense to pick the new car if it has been well-maintained.

The next step suggested is to have the car inspected by a shop that does diagnostic work. This could cost between $100 and $150 but will uncover any issues lurking. The mechanic can write up a detailed report with prices to better understand what the vehicle needs.

A few more tips for buying a quality vehicle

Getting a Carfax report for the vehicle is a good idea, but not enough on its own. Not everything gets reported to Carfax, so getting it in addition to an inspection is recommended. If there is a particular type of vehicle you are looking for, check some prices online before heading to the local car lot. Places like AutoTrader, CarMax, and Edmunds can give prices on similar vehicles.

Overall, there are a few ways to get a quality used car without buying a new vehicle. Hopefully, you will find any issues ahead of time by putting in a little work and research. Buying a used car might seem stressful, but it doesn’t have to be.

At one time, the Nissan Frontier was the cheapest pickup truck you could buy. But it was still pretty powerful and could tow over 6,000 lbs. But the 2022 Nissan Frontier has undergone a transformation that really upped its value and price.

Is the 2022 Nissan Frontier worth buying?

2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X | Nissan

Yes, the 2022 Nissan Frontier is an excellent truck to buy. It has interior and exterior upgrades that enhance its quality and capability. However, the Frontier is no longer a cheap work truck. The cheapest model is the S King Cab 4×2 model, and it starts at about $29,015.

Some critics see this as a win because the truck starts under $30,000. However, the 2021 Ford Ranger begins at about $24,820, the 2021 Chevy Colorado begins at around $25,200, and the 2021 Toyota Tacoma starts at around $26,400.

So the Nissan Frontier costs a few extra thousand more than its rivals now. But with all of the refinement it has, it could be worth the price.

How has the Frontier improved?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier has finally been revised to mark its third generation. But it still has a carryover engine. It comes with the same 3.8-liter V6 engine with 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. This engine is from 2020. Previously the Frontier came with a 4.0-liter V6 engine with 261 hp.

When properly equipped, the Frontier can tow up to 6,720 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,610 lbs. But rivals like the GMC Canyon and Jeep Gladiator can tow at least 7,650 lbs. This may make a difference depending on how heavy your camper or trailer is.

The Frontier received an updated look that’s very confident with square fenders and a blocky style. It got rid of the old V-shaped grille for a wider option with new LED headlights on the sides. Also, the front bumper is larger.

Critics are highly pleased with the updated interior. Nissan ditched cheap plastic materials for luxurious trim pieces and soft-touch materials. The Zero Gravity seats are compared to comfortable thrones.

Plus, the Nissan Frontier received modern tech updates, including a 7.0-inch digital cluster display, 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. You can opt for a wireless phone charger, heated steering wheel, Wi-Fi hotspot, and more.

How does the new Frontier perform?

The 2022 Nissan Frontier rides on a frame that dates back to 2000, but it’s received crucial suspension upgrades to provide a smoother ride. The longer wheelbase helps absorb impacts too.

The hydraulic cab mounts, extra cab insulation, reworked carpenter structure, and acoustic laminated glass prevent exterior noises from entering the cabin. The ride should be pretty quiet and relaxing.

Check out the Nissan Frontier Pro-4X model for enhanced capability. It includes Bilstein shocked, a Dana-sourced rear axle, 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, three steel skid plates, and an electronically locking rear differential.

The optional surround-view camera and dedicated off-road mode will help you navigate around obstacles and obstructions. Optional safety features include blind-spot warning, rear-cross traffic alert, and class-exclusive rear automatic emergency braking.

Winnebago Industries has been building recreational vehicles since 1966. It started out selling the vehicles at a significantly lower price than its competitors. Winnebago offers several levels of different models, ranging from $95,000 camper vans all the way up to $387,295 motorhomes. These RVs are the pinnacle of mobile decadence at every level, from big leather couches and fireplaces to basic vans with full bathrooms. However, these RVs aren’t without their own set of problems, just like any other vehicle.

The 2004 model year was particularly troublesome for the Sightseer, with 2006 raking in 10 recalls. Owners complain of engine failure and brake pistons seizing, while others report problems with the suspension and leaking differentials. Thankfully they recalled the brakes, as well as some steering components on the Workhorse chassis.

Several Winnebago RVs suffered from various individual ailments, but a few models got all of them. The Fuse, Journey, Travato, Adventurer, Era, Intent, Forza, and Revel all had at least three recalls against them. Most of them had to do with the fire extinguisher becoming clogged, others had detaching roof racks. Some RVs didn’t have their solar charging port fused, while others had improperly secured battery and hydraulic lines, according to the NHTSA.

Wrong axle: Micro Minnie

Though not a camper van or motorhome, Winnebago recalled the 2019-2020 model year Micro Minnies for having the wrong axle. Micro Minnies also had no emergency exit window installed in the bedroom, making it difficult for occupants to escape the trailer during an emergency.

There were recalls announced of the Winnebago 2021 Revel, Vista, and Adventure RVs for a defective power bed. The gears inside the bed’s motor can fail, causing the bed to prematurely extend without safely secured, falling on unsuspecting passengers. Winnebago dealers agreed to replace the motor for free.

Parts missing, electrical gremlins, and general discomfort

Complaints on 2021 models are still rolling in. Owners report led light failure with 2017 Era, warped components, jammed sewer tank, and kinked plumbing with their Hike RV, and missing parts including panels and screen doors. Others report poor quality control, with bed frames disintegrating and interior materials that don’t hold up to cooking liquids. Unfortunately, Winnebago’s customer service seems a bit slow on the uptake. Customers needing to fix various problems with their $100,000 (at least) purchases aren’t having an easy time rectifying the defects.

Winnebago has made RVs for decades. While they do offer a variety of sizes and versatility, some of their products may not be worth the price. Even with all of the recalls, 2018 appears to be the best year for these RVs. The problems weren’t detrimental, and thankfully they were also recalled. Whichever RV is being considered, have it inspected and make sure it’s solid. Apparently dealing with Winnebago customer service can be a difficult task.

The Tesla 2020 Impact Report was 94 pages of information about how the company operated last year. Some of the more exciting sections included the Tesla Autopilot statistics and information about car safety. Tesla discussed both active and passive safety measures on the popular electric vehicle.

The 2020 Tesla Impact Report offers a lot of insight into how the company and vehicles performed. Tesla discusses some of the active safety features included. These features are Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Departure Warning. The EV company also included Forward Collision Warning, Side Collision Warning, Obstacle-Aware Acceleration, and Blind Spot Warning. Over-the-air updates keep these features up-to-date.

Tesla commented that improved occupant safety was a vital part of the company mission in the passive safety section. Safety was the priority during research and development. This included a low center of gravity due to the battery and enhanced frontal impact safety.

The Tesla Model 3 and Model received five-star scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in every category and subcategory.

Tesla Autopilot vs. vehicles without Tesla Autopilot engaged

Number of Vehicular Accidents per Million Miles Driven in 2020 | Tesla 2020 Impact Report

Tesla collected the number of miles vehicles with Autopilot active or in manual driving mode. Tesla received data from the car at the moment of impact when a crash occurs. “To ensure our statistics are conservative, we count any crash in which drivers deactivated autopilot within five seconds before a crash, and we count all crashes in which the crash alert indicated an airbag or other active restraint deployed.”

That applies to crashes at 12 mph or faster. There is no differentiation based on the type of crash or the fault of the impact. Approximately 35% of recorded Autopilot crashes occurred when another car rear-ended the vehicle.

In 2020, vehicles with Tesla Autopilot engaged in the U.S. reported 0.2 accidents per million miles. The U.S. average was nine times higher at 2.0 accidents per million miles driven. The average was four and a half times lower in situations where Autopilot wasn’t engaged, but active safety features were.

Tesla is working to enhance vehicle safety

While Tesla makes the news occasionally for an unorthodox crash, it seems that vehicles with Tesla Autopilot engaged are safer on the roads. The Tesla Model X, Model 3, and Model Y all received high scores in various categories. The Tesla Model 3 received a Top Safety Pick+ Award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2020. The IIHS did not rate the Model Y and Model X.

The Tesla 2020 Impact Report has a lot of interesting information in it. Though the document is long, it is worth glancing over to understand better what Tesla has been up to behind the scenes. While Tesla Autopilot isn’t perfect and Full Self-Driving has a long way to go, the data is fascinating. Are Tesla electric vehicles safer with Tesla Autopilot active? The data suggests that is the case.
