We all like the idea of customizing a vehicle to make it our own. We may add bumper stickers, use seat and steering wheel covers, and add window visors. These are all good car safety customization options. However, changes like custom lighting are not good decisions when safety is concerned. Some lighting modifications, including colored headlights, are dangerous and illegal.

Why do we like the idea of colored lights?

Colored lighting and underglow kits have been a random popular concept for cars. It is one of those trends that comes and goes. Invented in the 80s, it soon faded, only to gain popularity again in the early 2000s with the release of The Fast and the Furious.

It is something we seem to associate with cool cars, mostly those that are sportier in style. We may want underglow on a truck with a lift kit or lowered to ensure it practically rests on the road. Sports cars or cars from any era where colored lighting was popular are also more likely to have light kits installed on them.

Some people choose to further customize their vehicle lighting by changing out their headlights and taillights. It may seem like a fun idea and a fantastic personalization option. However, it is not a good decision.

Why colored headlights are bad

You can go online and buy colored headlights. The ease of access makes many people feel it is just a way to add fun to their vehicle because it takes away the boring white lights that every other car in the world seems to have. The easy access to colored lighting should not fool you. According to AAA and Indiana law, it can lessen your vehicle safety and may break the law since most states allow only white or amber lighting on vehicles.

All vehicles come with either white or amber-colored headlights because it is the safest form of lighting. It gives you the best night vision and works most effectively when the fog rolls in. We know this sounds strange, considering many vehicles today appear to have blue headlights. However, they are not blue.

According to Autoblog, these blue lights are bright white lights that only appear blue because we are used to seeing lights that are closer to yellow.

Most states also have rules and regulations concerning colored lighting on a vehicle. For instance, you may not be allowed to have flashing, red, or true-blue, visible lights since it may make you appear to be an emergency vehicle.

Some states may not allow you to have lights inside the vehicle, under the vehicle, or any lights that exceed federal law regarding brightness. Therefore, if you desire to change your vehicle’s lighting, you will want to check your state’s laws first.

What happens if you violate vehicle lighting laws?

According to DrivingLaws, the penalty for trying to add cool lights to your vehicle is not anything major. It is a minor traffic offense that can typically mean you are fined around $45.00. However, this doesn’t mean you should rush out to try your luck with custom lighting because the actual cost could be much higher. You will have the cost of the custom lights, installation cost or time, a fine for using illegal lights, and then the cost of removal. Is it worth it?

A better option is to keep your headlight and taillight lenses looking new so that you can see the road ahead clearly. You can reserve your right to customize your vehicle in other safer ways.

The Chevy S-10 is an icon. OK. “icon” might be a bit strong, but the pickup truck sorely misses the Chevy S-10. These tiny pickup trucks were cheap, reliable, and practical. Models like the 2022 Ford Maverick are attempting to fit the small shoes of the S-10, but even the newer versions of small trucks are pretty big. So, why not just buy a brand-new old Chevy S-10? This 1988 Chevy S-10 fits the bill and is for sale.

This brand-new 1988 Chevy S-10 is better than a 2022 Ford Maverick

According to GM Authority, the Chevy S-10 dropped in 1982 – a great time for the tiny trucks – following the oil/gas shortage of the 1970s. This shortage changed the American automotive market forever. Muscle cars died and trucks got smaller and lighter. While many still mourn the death of the big-block muscle, the little pickup truck was a welcomed addition.

There was a 1.9-liter Isuzu four-cylinder and a 2.8-liter V6 available for the S-10. Both Chevy and GMC had their own versions of the S-Series trucks, with cosmetic differences in the grille, tailgate, and badging.

What makes this Chevy S-10 so special?

This 1988 Chevy S-10 is in immaculate condition. Not only is it cleaner than a Nun’s Habit, but this S-10 is also the top trim Tahoe trim. The factory color is called Steel Gray Metallic over a Carmine Red Special Cloth bench seat interior.

This crisp Chevy S-10 is powered by a fuel-injected 4.3-liter V6 producing 160 horsepower, backed by a four-speed automatic transmission – oh, and it only has 8,500 original miles.

Though it has barely seen the road since it rolled off the factory floor, it has seen some light custom work. The owner lowered the S-10 two inches upfront and three inches out back. The S-10 also got some era-correct Camaro wheels. However, the paint and interior are bone stock and look incredible, which is no small feat for a GM from this era.

The only other additions seem to be the short bed tonneau cover and era-fitting bug guard on the front. Nothing says late-’80s GM products like optional plastic and vinyl.

How much is this pristine Chevy pickup?

Cruisin’ Classics has the S-10 for sale at $24,995. While that may seem like a lot for an old chevy pickup, compare it to the current truck market. The base-model 2022 Ford Maverick is technically cheaper than this vintage pickup and better equipped. However, it isn’t even close as far as coolness goes.

The 2022 Ford Maverick has computers, gets better gas mileage, and is likely 10x more comfortable, but it doesn’t have the drip. The immaculate red interior of the Chevy S-10 screams personality and flair. Aside from the look, everything inside the Chevy is spotless. The gauges are crisp, the dash unfaded and uncracked, the door handles are tight, and nothing rattles. This is a nearly brand new 1988 Chevy S-10 and it’s as close as you can get to having a new classic tiny truck. The Ford Maverick isn’t cut from this cloth, though it’s trying to be.

Hyundai has been steadily breaking into the American auto market by making great cars, such as the Palisade. This has allowed Hyundai to continue selling many cars recently. Here’s a look at how Hyundai broke sales records in July and how Hyundai’s SUVs are performing surprisingly.

Hyundai has been doing very well in 2021

Hyundai SUV | Hyundai Motor America

Sales in 2021 have been pretty remarkable despite chip shortages. Many automakers bounced back from their pandemic lows, but many still haven’t. Meanwhile, Hyundai saw a 56% increase in sales in the first few months of 2021 compared to the same time period in 2020. Not only that, but Hyundai has actually managed to break a few of its sales records in 2021.

According to Hyundai, July 2021 was the fifth month in a row where Hyundai saw a double-digit increase in sales compared to last year. Compared to July 2020, Hyundai sold about 19% more cars in July 2021. In hard numbers, Hyundai said that it sold 68,500 units in July. It also set a July retail sales record, making over 61,000 retail sales in July.

In terms of Hyundai’s year-to-date sales, Hyundai’s sold over 475,000 cars so far in 2021. This represents a 44% increase from the same time period in 2020. Hyundai said it broke sales records for the Venue and the Kona. While these were record-breaking results for Hyundai, they were also surprising.

What’s so surprising about these sales numbers

SUVs are a trendy segment right now, so it’s not surprising that Hyundai’s SUV segment is doing well. While Hyundai’s SUV sales are still very healthy, surprisingly, they didn’t change much from 2020. Hyundai said that, in July 2021, SUV sales grew by 4%. In comparison, Hyundai’s cars saw a 36% growth in sales.

More surprisingly, was Hyundai’s eco-friendly vehicle segment. That’s because Hyundai said that it saw a 399% increase in sales of eco-friendly cars. That’s obviously a much bigger increase in sales compared to SUVs. This shows that Hyundai’s eco-friendly cars have seen a big growth in sales, but they are still a minority.

Indeed, Hyundai said that its eco-friendly options accounted for about 12% of its retail sales. That is still a pretty big chunk of Hyundai’s sales, and, likely, those sales will only grow from here.

Hyundai’s July sales by the numbers

In terms of Hyundai’s best-selling cars of July, first place went to the Elantra. According to Hyundai, it sold about 13,103 units this July and represented a 41% increase from last July. In terms of year-to-date sales, Elantra sold 87,160 units so far in 2021, which is a 51% increase from before.

Santa Fe was in second place. But according to Hyundai, it was close. The company sold 12,766 units of the Santa Fe in July. A 37% increase from last July. Year-to-date, Hyundai’s sold 75,876 units of the Santa Fe, which is a 44% increase from last year.

Tucson was in third place, selling 11,483 units in July. This was a mere 5% increase from last July, but Tucson is actually the best-selling car for Hyundai so far in 2021. Hyundai’s sold 95,000 units of the Tucson so far this year, and that’s a 38% increase from last year.
