As EV technology rapidly progresses, demand for these vehicles is expected to grow. The Nissan Leaf, which was groundbreaking and popular upon its release, can barely keep up with Tesla and Ford rivals’ success. Kia fans were disappointed the Soul EV won’t come to the States, though the Niro EV isn’t a terrible compromise.

However, many prospective EV drivers aren’t willing to compromise on the high prices of many electric vehicles. That battery might make an EV last longer than a gas engine, but it also contributes to its high price point. Thankfully, more automakers, including Stellantis, are beginning to understand the importance of affordable EVs.

Stellantis and its lineup

Stellantis was previously known as FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), which contains Chrysler and Fiat. The company is responsible for producing capable favorites such as the Ram 1500 and Jeep Wrangler. Stellantis also owns two of the most famous Italian luxury automotive brands: Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

Stellantis plans to have 55 EVs on the market by 2025, with availability in both Europe and the United States. Current electric offerings from Stellantis are sparse, but the Fiat 500e is still worth mentioning. It comes with a peppy 118-hp engine and 199 miles of range, plus a fancy interior. The automaker also plans to release a hydrogen fuel cell commercial van at the end of this year.

Stellantis CEO pushes for cheaper EVs

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, admits that the rising cost of EVs is a big hurdle for some consumers, Ward’s Auto reports. In addition to MSRPs, EV production costs are also on the rise by about 40%. As more EV models enter the market, their sales will continue encouraging the production of new models. Approximately 40% of automotive sales will be for EVs and plug-in hybrids by 2030.

However, Tavares claims the merger between Fiat-Chrysler and Peugeot (which created Stellantis) has allowed major cost reductions. The company saved $5.9 billion by spreading development costs and repurposing existing platforms. Additionally, Tavares predicts a huge demand for EVs between 2030 and 2035.

He says other companies should follow Stellantis’ example by cutting redundant costs to prepare for production increases. There’s always the possibility unprepared automakers might not have enough resources to support the demand. More important, consumers won’t have to pay as much for an EV if its production costs are lower.

The automaker’s electric future

Stellantis has plenty planned on the EV front, notably the Ram 1500, Autoweek reports. Set to debut in 2024, the “eRam” will travel 500 miles on a full charge and probably boast an equally impressive towing capacity. Stellantis has also teased that the electric Ram 1500 will have more interior tech than rivals.

The Dodge eMuscle, the first all-electric muscle car, is also gunning for a 2024 model year release. It comes with two electric motors, which could make a staggering 900 hp. It will reportedly also travel 500 miles on a full charge and reach 60 mph in two seconds.

By 2025, Stellantis also promises that every Jeep model will have an optional electric powertrain. The 2022 Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe — both PHEVs — have already been revealed. The Wrangler 4xe gets the better mileage, with 25 miles of electric range and 50 MPGe in electric-only mode.

With so many impressive Stellantis EVs on the horizon, more consumers will undoubtedly be eager to drive them. If they can experience EVs’ benefits for a lower purchase price, that makes it even better.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is here, and it’s a huge improvement over the 2021 Tucson. Some of the upgrades to the 2022 have even resulted in it being safer. While the 2021 Hyundai Tucson has a Top Safety Pick, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson has a Top Safety Pick+ award.

2022 Hyundai Tucson | Hyundai

Is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award really that great?

To be awarded an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must get a good score in all of the IIHS crashworthy ratings. Ratings can range from poor to good, with marginal and acceptable in between, so good is pretty – well, good.

These tests include the driver-side small overlap front, the passenger-side small overlap front, and the moderate overlap front. In addition to these front crash tests, the vehicle must get a good rating in the side crash tests, roof strength, and head restraint tests.

On top of that, the vehicle must have an advanced or superior in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. Headlights, which are often overlooked but shouldn’t be, must be good or acceptable on all trim levels. Oftentimes one trim level has good headlight ratings while another trim level does not.

The crash test ratings were good in the 2022 Hyundai Tucson

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson got a good score in all of the crashworthiness categories, including small overlap front: driver-side. Within this category are subcategories, including structure and safety cage, driver injury measures, and driver restraints and dummy kinematics. The 2022 Hyundai Tucson scored a good in each of these.

Similarly, the small overlap front: passenger-side category and subcategories were all good, as were the moderate overlap front test results. Side crash tests were all good, with the exception of one. Under driver injury measures, the torso got only an acceptable rating.

The roof strength, head restraints, and seats got good ratings. In addition to getting a good rating, the roof strength on the 2022 Hyundai Tucson has a curb weight of 3,474 pounds, and a strength-to-weight ratio of 5.05. Its peak force is 17,527 pounds. Head restraints ratings were all good for the Tucson.

Crash prevention in the 2022 Hyundai Tucson is superior

The IIHS tested two different safety systems, and found them both to be superior. This rating applies only to the 2022 models. It found front crash prevention: vehicle-to-pedestrian to be superior.

Headlights range depending on the trim you purchase. The rating on the Limited trim is good. The rating on the SE, SEL, and N-Line trims are only acceptable. If you decide to purchase a 2022 Hyundai Tucson, pay attention to the headlights that come with the trim you select.

Although it’s not part of the Top Safety Pick+ criteria, the IIHS does test child seat anchors. It found those in the 2022 Hyundai Tucson to be only acceptable. If you’re planning on putting car seats in the Tucson, you might want to learn more about these before buying.

Overall, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson is an award-winning subcompact SUV with a lot going for it. Its excellent safety ratings make the Tucson a great pick for anyone looking for a small SUV.

When it comes to having an RV or a camper, travel trailers are a great way to get into RV life. But, as with many other products in the industry, travel trailers are recalled for various reasons from time to time. In fact, roof vent issues mean recalls for North Trail and Mallard travel trailers.

What kinds of issues are these travel trailers having with the roof vents?

According to RV Travel, Heartland Recreational Vehicles, LLC issued this recall due to roof vent issues? But what exactly is the issue? Apparently, certain 2021 North Trail and Mallard travel trailers are affected because the roof vents weren’t “routed properly during production.”

So what does this mean for owners of affected North Trail and Mallard travel trailers? It means that the refrigerator could overheat. Improperly routed vents will potentially lead to overheated RV refrigerators. This, unsurprisingly, increases the risk of a fire.

Furthermore, an overheating refrigerator could also lead to exhaust gas getting trapped inside the vehicle. It’s no secret that an issue like this would put anyone inside the vehicle at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) supports claims that trapped exhaust gas will potentially lead to an increased risk of injury or death as well.

What happens if my North Trail or Mallard trailer is affected by this recall?

If your North Trail or Mallard travel trailer is affected by the recall, it’s necessary to take it in for inspection at the dealership. Each unit will get an inspection of the roof vent. Then, if the refrigerator is improperly vented then the dealership will perform the necessary vent sleeve connection repairs.

As this issue is directly related to a recall, all of the repairs that fall under the recall will be done free of charge. According to the reports, owners can expect notification letters to go out on September 16, 2021. In addition, owners can contact the customer service department for Heartland Recreational Vehicles, LLC. The number for the company’s customer service is 1-877-262-8032.

Owning an RV is a gateway to adventure. However, there is always a potential risk for bumps in the road. Recalls are always possible. If your unit is affected by this or any other recall, it can be a little frustrating.

With a little time and effort, dealers and RV companies can resolve the issues and get owners back on the open road. While the repairs do come at no cost, there is always an investment in time. So acting quickly if your North Trail or Mallard travel trailer RV is affected and this will get you back out into the thick of things sooner. In fact, if the issue is addressed as soon as possible, there’s still plenty of fall camping on the horizon for your crew in the camper.

If you would like to know more and have any difficulty learning more information about this RV recall, there are other ways to get more information too. The owners of North Trail and Mallard travel trailers can also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline. This hotline can be reached at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

Things aren’t looking hot for the auto industry thanks to the semiconductor chip shortage. In fact, Mercedes-Benz, one of the world’s top car companies, is feeling the pain. It might’ve had a good start to the year, but things aren’t looking great as we enter the second half of 2021.

Where are the chips?

Just when you thought the toilet paper shortage was bad, we end up with a chip shortage. It began when the COVID-19 pandemic hit last year, and many people were forced to work remotely. Rather than using their office computers, they went out and bought laptops.

To say the tech world didn’t expect this situation would be an understatement. It caught the industry off-guard, and it was unprepared to meet the sudden demand.

The chip shortage carried over to auto manufacturers, which use semiconductors in vehicles. If things continue this way, the chip shortage could cost the auto industry $110 billion in revenue this year alone.

Chipmakers ramped up efforts to meet the unexpected demand. But they’ve seen a few setbacks, like the fire at the Renesas warehouse. It seems the bad luck keeps coming, and not even luxury automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, are immune to this shortage.

But Daimler isn’t afraid

Despite the chip shortage, Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, Daimler, believes it’s still performing well. This is largely based on strong second-quarter numbers.

“We achieved a strong performance across all divisions in the second quarter,” Daimler recently reported. “At Mercedes-Benz Cars and Vans, we posted double-digit margins for the third quarter in a row and thus demonstrated the resilience of our business — despite the persistently low availability of semiconductors.”

Daimler is also trying to increase sales by creating a truck and bus company. Given the push for more public transportation and the increasing adoration for trucks, this might help boost sales.

Though this is great news, the chip shortage isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It calls into question whether Daimler can continue to perform well moving forward. And it’s not looking good.

A strong start for Mercedes-Benz won’t be enough to end well

Despite the sales boost Mercedes-Benz enjoyed during the second quarter, it appears the momentum can’t last. The chip shortage isn’t a problem with an easy workaround.

Bloomberg expects Daimler’s sales to begin flattening as the year continues. Without producing enough vehicles to meet consumer demand, the manufacturer will inevitably see sluggish sales, and they’re beginning to cut into Daimler’s bottom line in more ways than one. Though stocks are still high in many areas, they’re beginning to dip. It’s not enough to make a major impact on Mercedes-Benz just yet, but with a lack of new cars, that might change.

The awful news is that it doesn’t appear the semiconductor chip shortage will end anytime soon. The pandemic still affects many parts of the world, and chip production hasn’t increased enough to meet demand. As chips come out, they’re snapped up quickly, and it’s unclear who gets what.

Either way, no one automaker is getting enough chips to meet demand. Though Toyota performed well enough stateside to kick General Motors off the throne as America’s best-selling automaker, even it’s feeling the pain.

While it’s clear this can’t last forever, it won’t end soon. In the meantime, you might have to wait to buy a new Mercedes-Benz if you can’t find the one you want at dealerships.
