Enthusiasts sometimes herald the Ford Mustang GT as one of the best options for cheap performance. At $36,000, 460 naturally aspirated horsepower spinning the rear wheels with a limited-slip differential is hard to beat. However, there are cheaper options that get even more power. Some of these options exist within the Mustang family, they just require some creativity in order to surpass the GT.

Ecoboost Mustang

The base model Mustang comes with a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four, that makes 310 horsepower. It’s way down on power compared to the GT, however, tuners are able to extract significant gains with just a few upgrades. Brand new Ecoboost Mustangs start at $27,000, already $11,000 cheaper than the GT. Buying a used Ecoboost and fitting these upgrades could see a tremendous increase in power.

Driving Line outlines a tuner’s progression, which started with the Ecoboost making 276 horsepower a the wheels stock. They made 372 horsepower with a cold air intake, an aftermarket downpipe, an intercooler from Mishimoto, and a tune on stock internals. According to dyno tests, the stock GT makes 415 horsepower at the wheels, so it wouldn’t take much more to put the EcoBoost within range.

Starting in 2005, Ford released the S197 Mustang. It had the same single overhead camshaft V8 from the later SN95s but had more horsepower. After the 2010 facelift, Ford gave the Mustang a new V8, with dual overhead camshafts, bigger displacement, and 412 horsepower.

This was the first iteration of the Coyote engine, which was released with the 2011 Mustang GT. By 2014 the GT had 420 horsepower. 2011-2013 model years are selling in used markets for $20,000 and under, making them even cheaper than the Ecoboost.

Modding these Mustangs can be as easy as installing a new ECU for $400, or a cold air intake for $300. Going nuclear means getting a supercharger, which is available for around $6,000. The Roush Phase 2 supercharger kit costs $7,000 and can increase horsepower to 625.

If trying to stay carb-legal, Paxton makes a $7,000 supercharger for the 2011-2014 Mustang GT that makes 615 horsepower that is legal on the street in all 50 states. The S197’s used value, plus the supercharger is still $10,000 cheaper than a new Mustang GT, and more powerful.

The iconic Fox Body chassis rescued the Mustang from mediocrity in 1979 and continued in the ‘80s with more powerful V8 options. In 1987 the engine made 225 horsepower from “5.0” liters, the most powerful Mustang since the early 1970s, following both oil crises. Ford made some good choices with this engine, including forged aluminum pistons (from 1985), and a roller rocker camshaft.

Owners report obtaining 500 horsepower out of the stock internals. Fitting a junkyard turbo to this engine would achieve substantial power gains, without having to change anything internal. Reliability, however, would need some reevaluation. Still, it’s one of the easiest cars to restore.

The Mustang GT is rightfully recognized as a cheap, aptly performing car, but doesn’t necessarily have the market cornered. There are lots of great options for cheap power, that is also street legal. Depending on how that power is obtained, reliability doesn’t have to be an afterthought.

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition is one of the more anticipated Toyota trucks hitting the market next year. What makes it such a good buy? Toyota put a lot of thought into the Trail Edition, and buyers are taking notice. What’s new on this Toyota truck? Just about everything.

What is the new with the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition?

What’s up with the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition? | Toyota

As Toyota said in the press release, “Modern times require modern vehicles and, arguably, one theme rises above the rest for vehicle attributes: versatility.” The Trail Edition is doing just that. The Toyota Tacoma is one of the best-selling trucks on the market for 16 years now, and for good reason. The Trail Edition is new as of 2021, but it is already improving in its second year.

Some of the new features in the Tacoma Trail Edition are the lifted front and back, plus a new locking rear differential. Toyota raised the front of the Tacoma 1.1 inches with coil springs and removed the front air dam to further improve clearance. The approach angle is increased to 34 degrees with those improvements. With the half-inch lift in the rear, the departure angle is improved to 23.6 degrees. The breakover angle is also improved to 26.4 degrees. In addition to that, the Trail Edition offers the same skid plates as the TRD Off-Road. Not bad, Toyota

While everyone else is fighting over the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro in Lunar Rock, make your way to the Tacoma. You can get it in Lunar Rock and it is far more capable for off-road fun. Automoblog reports there are other colors, too. These include Super White, Army Green, and Midnight Black Metallic. Plus, new bronze wheels add half an inch to the Tacoma for a wider stance. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition comes with a 3.5L V6 with 278 hp in either an automatic or manual option.

The optional Tow Package also comes with the V6, but some extras. These include a Class IV tow hitch, engine oil cooler, transmission fluid cooler, and a power steering cooler. Plus, it comes with a 130 amp alternator, seven pin-connector, and trailer sway control to help tow 6,400 pounds. A 120-volt power outlet is also included to keep your stuff charged off the road.

A new truck that you can actually get dirty

Toyota offers a pretty good warranty, too. The Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition comes with a three-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. The powertrain warranty is five years, 60,000-miles. Toyota also offers an extended warranty, which might be a good idea. Toyota hasn’t released the official pricing, but it is probably around $40,000. Based on the current lineup, it should fall just under the TRD Pro trim.

While the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is the top-of-the-line option, not everyone wants that for off-roading fun. The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition is the best of both worlds.

Trains can be a great form of public transportation. However, public transportation is simply horrible in many areas of the U.S. There are many reasons why that is, including poor maintenance, low funding, and ultimately, a small ridership (which is often due to the first two reasons). That has allowed other countries, like China, to create trains that are far faster than what American railways can achieve, but that could change eventually.

Why trains can be great

Trains, like other forms of public transportation, are great for a lot of reasons. They allow a lot of people to move around the city with a small physical footprint. Not only that, but well-run trains are very affordable, and they do something essential for the average rider’s wallet. If public transportation goes all the places you want to go to, and if the fares are fair, there’s little reason to own a car.

Owning a car can be pretty expensive, and if trains are cheap and available everywhere, folks can save a lot of money on gas, insurance, and maintenance. Unfortunately, while trains used to dominate the U.S., the country has been built around the car in the last few decades. Trains and other forms of public transit are only a good idea in a few places, like New York City and San Francisco. Elsewhere in the U.S., they’re underfunded and lack an expansive network of stations and stops.

How China is beating the U.S. with trains

Since New York City and its surrounding areas already love trains, it’s naturally the host of the fastest train in America. As CBS News said, Acela, as the high-speed rail service is called, tops out at about 160 mph. That’s a 10 mph increase over the last version of the train. Acela can be a great service for folks who need to travel between Boston and Washington D.C., but that’s the only high-speed rail operating in the U.S. right now.

On the other hand, according to The Drive, China has claimed to have built the fastest train in the world. It’s called the CRRC 600, and it tops out at about 373 mph. That’s over twice as fast as the new Acela models can go. On top of that, thanks to its high speed, China’s new train even beats out air travel.

With that being said, there’s a huge difference between Acela and the CRRC 600. The CRRC 600 is a maglev, which means that it’s using magnets to levitate itself. Acela, meanwhile, is a more traditional train. Due to that, Acela will never go as fast as the CRRC 600 or any other maglevs can go.

How the U.S. is planning on competing

While China is miles ahead of the U.S. as far as trains go, that may change eventually. President Biden is a well-known fan of trains. As such, the Department of Transportation may be looking at improving train service across the U.S. soon. That being said, the U.S. currently has no maglev trains, and there aren’t any major proposals to change that.

However, while negotiations are ongoing, Biden’s infrastructure bill asks for billions in Amtrak funding. According to Slate, one of the current proposals includes about $66 billion in funding for Amtrak. While that proposal may or may not change in the future, that $66 billion would help shore up high-speed rail projects on the east coast and the west coast. For example, California is slowly building its own high-speed rail on the west coast to eventually link San Francisco to LA. However, while these trains would be fast, they likely wouldn’t be faster than that Chinese maglev.
