The longer we wait for the new Ghostbusters: Afterlife film, the more we get to learn about what to expect from this new one and the previous Ghostbusters films. The Ghostbusters franchise has a die-hard cult following, and with that comes a deep love for the film’s props. This is why when the new trailer showed the barn-find return of the legendary Ecto-1 – one of the most memorable movie cars – fans lost their heads with excitement. But the old Cadillac Ecto-1 got a killer engine swap for the next world-ending ghostly apocalypse.

The Ecto-1 drifting in a field | Ghostbusters: Afterlife

The new Ghostbuster: Afterlife is a film for Ghostbusters gear heads

In the YouTube video here, Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife Director and Co-Writer, puts words to the feeling that many fans share about what made the original Ghostbusters film such an iconic piece of cinema

“My connection with Ghostbusters always had to do with this ephemera. It was the packs, it was the traps, and it was the car,” Reitman gushed over his love for the films. He goes on to say, “ A lot of this film for me was the thrill of what it would be like to discover all these things in your home.”

Understanding Reitman’s love for the Ghost-busting gear makes the trailer for this film make perfect sense when he set out to do justice to the original props that definitely included the iconic Ecto-1.

The Ecto-1 needed a LS motor to better save the world

For whatever reason, one of Reitman’s earliest ideas for the film was a sequence of the Ecto-1 drifting through a wheat field. Reitman wanted to mirror the original film by using as many practical effects as possible. Part of this meant getting the Ecto-1 running hot enough to fully tear ass in a wheat field (it was actually barley).

The way the production went about this was the same any hot-rod builder would do; rebuild the old Cadillac from the ground up and give it an LS engine. In this case, Reitman dropped a crate LS engine into the now, very-rippable ghost hunting rig. As he says in the video, after a full day of ripping donuts in the barley field with the Ecto-1, they could smell burning barley from the Ecto-1’s tomfoolery.

Aside from practical effects, there was also plain practicality that needed to be considered in the Ecto-1 engine swap. In Ghostbusters II, Ecto-1 was in pretty rough shape and regularly sputtered and broke down. It eventually broke down on the Brooklyn Bridge for so long it got a ticket. Aside from the powerful fun of an LS swap, maybe Reitman just didn’t want his Ecto-1 to break down.

What is the history of the original Ecto-1?

According to MotorTrend, the original Ecto-1 was converted by Miller-Meteor at the company’s Piqua, Ohio, plant that used the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado tail fins and other style cues to make this ambulance hearse that would prove to be eternally linked to Ghostbusters. This design only made it to 400 production cars, making the base car a rare number indeed.

Originally, Ecto-1 was supposed to be based on a 1975 Cadillac ambulance, and it was meant to be black with purple lights. Needless to say, we are glad that the Ecto-1 design we know and love made the cut over the other.

After the Ecto-1 spent years sitting and rusting in an LA backlot, fans eventually caused such a fuss that it got a full restoration and is now preserved. The plot point of the Ecto-1 being a discarded barn find is really not all that far off from its actual history. However, something tells me the LS-swapped Ecto-1 might not see the same fate as the original.

From now on, electric cars are the name of Cadillac’s game. But before it commits to EVs fully, Cadillac is singing its internal-combustion performance cars’ swan songs. And for those who want to go toe-to-toe with the M3, that song sounds like the 2022 CT4-V Blackwing. In many ways, the CT4-V Blackwing, rather than the regular CT4-V, is the ‘true’ successor to the dearly departed Cadillac ATS-V. But is the new car genuinely faster than the old one?

On paper, the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing seems similar to the Cadillac ATS-V

Curb weight 3,860 lbs (manual)

0-60 mph time 4.1 seconds (manual)
3.8 seconds (automatic)
4.2 seconds (manual, Car and Driver)
3.9 seconds (automatic, Car and Driver)

Despite being a new car, the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing carries some things over from the ATS-V. The two cars have the same engine, for example, and ride on the same Alpha platform, MotorTrend notes. And while the CT4-V Blackwing is marginally faster and more powerful, the sedans’ specs are essentially identical.

However, the truth is that the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing is more than a mildly updated ATS-V. For one, the Blackwing’s V6 has an upgraded oiling system, intake, exhaust, turbochargers, and ECU software, The Drive says. Manual cars’ engines get titanium connecting rods, too. Secondly, Cadillac revised the six-speed manual and added no-lifting shifting as well as an upgraded electronically-controlled limited-slip differential. And the sedan also has additional chassis strengthening.

In addition, the 2022 CT4-V Blackwing also gets car-specific Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, strut-tower braces, and GM’s fourth-gen MagneRide magnetorheological dampers. No word yet on those magnesium wheels, though. However, the new car does get the C8 Corvette’s electronic brake booster, Road & Track reports, as well as slightly larger Brembo brakes. Plus, in 2021 the CT4-V got an interior tech and material upgrade.

The 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing doesn’t just succeed the ATS-V, MotorTrend says—it transcends it

A continuing critique of the ‘regular’ Cadillac CT4-V is that it doesn’t quite live up to the Cadillac ATS-V’s legacy. While the ATS-V could hang with the BMW M3, the CT4-V is more like an M340i. That’s not the case with the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing. It isn’t just “a serious M3 rival,” R&T reports—it’s also “a big step up” from the ATS-V.

The CT4-V Blackwing takes everything that was good about the ATS-V and “finesses” it to “a transcendental level,” MotorTrend explains. That new exhaust turns the V6’s song from “blunt and hollow” to a “mostly refined rasp,” Hagerty reports. The new brakes, complete with emissions-friendly compounds, bite hard and stay firm even after a long track session. And the manual is less notchy than the Cadilac ATS-V’s stick while also more enjoyable to shift than the 2021 M3’s manual. Plus, the interior, while not quite on Mercedes’ or Genesis’s level, is significantly better than the one in the ATS-V, The Drive says.

Arguably the biggest difference between the Cadillac ATS-V and the CT4-V Blackwing, though, is the latter’s suspension. The Drive describes it as “magical,” saying it keeps the sedan in line “even when shooting over rumble-stripped chicanes 123 mph.” It offers compliance without sacrificing stability, sharpness, or accuracy, yet the sedan has little to no body roll. Combined with the steering, which is precise, well-weighted, and full of feedback, it makes the CT4-V Blackwing a car that “out-M3s the M3,” R&T gushes.

Is the new car worth the price?

In its final year, the Cadillac ATS-V Sedan started at $60,695. Meanwhile, the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing starts at $59,990 with the manual. With the automatic, the base price increases to $63,165. So, the new car is roughly the same price as the old one. And that trend continues even after you start adding options.

An extra $4350 gets you the Carbon Fiber 1 Package with a carbon-fiber front splitter, dive planes, rear spoiler, and front wheel-well deflectors. Another $2650 adds carbon-fiber rocker extensions and a carbon-fiber rear diffuser. And if you want the sport bucket seats or performance data/video recorder, those cost extra, too. Also, while the manual CT4-V Blackwing gets a few standard advanced driver-assistance features, the optional ones are limited to automatic-equipped models.

But is it worth it? Considering that even with the Carbon Fiber Packages and data recorder the Cadillac is cheaper than a 2021 M3, yes, MT says. The BMW might have a better interior, but the CT4-V Blackwing is more fun. Not to mention, faster and better around a track than the ATS-V.

If you have thought about buying an electric car, but don’t want to spend around $30,000 for a new one, then you can always check the used market. While perusing the list of classifieds, you’re sure to run into plenty of Nissan Leaf and Fiat 500e models for sale. They’re both popular EVs, but if you had to pick one, which would be a better value? Let’s find out.

2019 Fiat 500e versus 2019 Nissan Leaf

Nissan LEAF | Nissan

While these two electric hatchbacks might look similar, they actually couldn’t be more different. For starters, the Nissan Leaf is a five-door hatchback and the 500e is a two-door hatchback. Under the hood of the 2019 Nissan Leaf, you’ll find a 110-kW synchronous electric motor that puts out 147 hp. That power is supplement by instantaneous torque, which is able to scoot the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.4 seconds, according to Nissan.

But performance isn’t exactly the Leaf’s focal point. Instead, the Leaf shines with its 150-mile electric range, which can be extended if you can find a long-range model. Either way, the Nissan Leaf also offers some additional features like one-pedal driving, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and Pro Pilot Assist.

On the inside, the Leaf offers a good amount of room for up to five adults and is available with leather seats, a surround-view monitor, and even a premium Bose Audio system.

The Fiat 500e offers compact electric fun

While the Nissan Leaf offers buyers a little more room and power, the Fiat 500e offers some quirky, compact fun. Bear in mind that with an 83-kW motor, the 500e is down on power compared to it Japanese rival. However, it’s 111-hp rating doesn’t necessarily make it slow. According to Car and Driver’s testing, the 2019 Fiat 500e was able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. which is about one second slower than the Leaf.

But again, performance isn’t the key takeaway with this plucky electric car. In addition to its efficient and somewhat powerful motor, the 500e is also blessed with a small, but comfortable interior, as long as you’re on the shorter side. Once inside, you’ll find faux leather seats, a five-inch touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, automatic climate control, and heated front seats. That’s a lot of value considering this is a tiny electric car that’s made for shorter commutes. Speaking of commuting, the Fiat 500e is capable of driving up to 84 miles on a single charge.

Which electric vehicle is a better value?

The Nissan Leaf is the better choice, hands down. Despite its reputation for being simply reliable over the years, the Leaf boasts more interior and cargo volume than the Fiat 500e and more electric range. Additionally, you can find a 2019 or older Nissan Leaf for anywhere between $15,000 to $19,000 on the used market. By comparison, used Fiat 500e examples are selling for around $15,000. That’s a good price, but the Leaf is a better value.

Outdoor enthusiasts and road warriors of all stripes recognize Subaru models as high-performance and high-safety vehicles. Their reliability is legendary. Given the brand’s popularity and reputation, it’s not much of a surprise that Subaru was awarded its third consecutive J.D. Power Award on July 15, 2021. What is surprising is the category. This is the third time in a row that Subaru has earned the J.D. Power Brand Loyalty Award.  Let’s take a closer look at the J.D. Power Awards to understand better why this is such an achievement for Subaru.

Notable awards Subaru has received over the years.

Subaru owners love the brand’s all-wheel drive system.  Subaru has now manufactured over 20 million models with AWD.  The highlight of the AWD system is the stability it offers on slick roadways, thanks to its central placement. Subaru prides itself on designing a car around the car’s inhabitants, and the AWD system is an example of this philosophy in action. The passenger-centered design has led to Subaru‘s achievements and recognition, including:

  • Kelley Blue Book’s 2021 Best Performance Brand winner
  • 2021 ALG Residual Value Award
  • ACSI #1 Rank in Vehicle Safety
  • 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick

J.D. Power believes that competition makes a better product

J.D. Power was founded with the customer’s voice at the forefront of consumer ratings and awards.  The company’s founder believed that if rankings, even in small increments, were made between industry competitors, then products would be improved. Furthermore, if consumers made the ratings, then even better. This means that consumers’ needs remain the center of product development.

The organization’s high-quality, authoritative rankings are valued across various industries, including telecom, financial services, and healthcare.  It’s important to remember that J.D. Power rates the customer experience with the product.  Therefore, this doesn’t mean that the product is necessarily best in safety or other industrial standards. It means that customers have enjoyed their experience with the product and with the brand. This includes everything from reliability of service, reliability of the product, personalization of services, and overall positivity toward a brand.

Considering how sensitive some consumers are about vehicles meeting their needs, Subaru’s ability to gain the highest customer loyalty within the auto industry is a notable achievement, indeed. When consumers want changes to products, Subaru delivers.

Subaru’s brand is safety and reliability

Not every Subaru model is well received, but you have to give the company credit for trying.  Subaru’s sport coupes, the BRZ, and the WRX have not enjoyed the same popularity as the brand’s SUVs and wagons. Still, with an eye on consumer satisfaction, you can likely expect future models to include upgrades and resets to improve their performance and reliability.

Additionally, be sure to look for Subaru’s all-new electric vehicle, the Solterra, expected to debut in 2022. With the Solterra, drivers can expect the same attention to safety, detail, reliability, and customer satisfaction that Subaru brings to all its products. We’ll see if this new EV hits its stride right away or not until word of mouth spreads positive news throughout the Subaru crowd.

Brand loyalty is a significant achievement because customers who are loyal to a brand promote it by word of mouth.  Their personal experiences are repeated to others, and a brand builds a wide and loyal base. This loyalty is probably one of the reasons why Subaru is willing to take some risks without compromising its status as a safe and reliable brand.

That’s why Subaru has received a multitude of safety awards. The company’s vehicles have received superior ratings from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) annually. Additionally, Subaru’s Outback, Forester, Ascent, and other models have been awarded high safety ratings (four stars and above) from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA). There’s no reason to believe that their electric and sports vehicles will fail to deliver similar marks.
