Motorcycle and car theft are on the rise in America. It’s one of the lamest things around, but it’s happening. In fact, car thefts increased 9.2 percent last year alone. It makes sense, though. Many millions of people lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Economic stressors almost always shake out with higher crime statistics as people are worried and desperate. That being said, according to Consumer Reports, there are some steps we can all take to secure our rides better and help prevent car theft numbers from growing. Older cars like a 90s Ford or something might be easier due to manual locks, but even modern cars with key fobs are getting swiped.

The best way to prevent car theft is by not making it easy

Consumer Reports spoke with Lt. Bruce Hosea, an auto theft specialist with the LA Police Department, who said that most car theft could be traced back to thieves seeing a car as an easy target. Of course, this is a common through-line with most crimes. An “easy target” typically means an older car that may be easier to jimmy a door open, cracked windows, or unlocked doors.

If car theft is more likely to happen in cases where cars seem easy to steal, then logic would say that the best thing you can do to prevent car theft is to keep your car parking tight. The easy steps here are simply locking your doors, rolling up your windows, and making sure your car is a well-lit and populated place.

It seems like a no-brainer, but locked doors will stop the majority of car thefts. “The overwhelming majority of vehicle thefts and burglaries are a result of unlocked vehicle doors,” says Crystal Clark, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

Visible security devices actually help

I know we all roll our eyes when we hear a car alarm. Almost no one stops to think a person is stealing a car when they hear one blaring. All we want is for it to shut off. However, police say that a visible security device will usually prevent most car thefts. Things like a steering wheel lock or the little blinking red light of a car alarm do more to deter thieves than we think. These things make the idea of stealing a car just an extra step harder, and statistics show that most thieves will more than likely move on.

Lights and cameras are a great way to stop car theft

Consumer Reports says having motion-activated floodlights outside of your house is a strong deterrent against car theft. There is both a practical and psychological advantage to having bright lights near your car. For one, a thief will most likely leave if they are suddenly flooded with bright lights and see a camera. These things also trigger a psychological reaction to being exposed.

Having a camera up may deter theft if it’s visible. Still, even if a car is stolen, good footage can be invaluable to catching the suspect and getting stolen property returned.

Are there tracking devices for cars?

Of course, tracking devices won’t prevent theft, but they will likely help if a car gets stolen. This is a simple and completely reversible mod that may pay off. Some basic GPS units can plug directly into your vehicle’s computer port, but they can also be easily removed.

According to Consumer Reports, LoJack is probably the more popular brand of GPS, but it is a more fully integrated system that costs a bit more. These days, some new car models will provide a car tracking service as a subscription, as well.

There is only so much you can do to stop someone from stealing your car

Unfortunately, car theft is going to happen. There is nothing you can do to guarantee that your car is completely safe. However, these easy steps can greatly reduce the chance of coming out and finding your car missing. Keep it simple: lock your doors, roll up your windows, park in a well-lit area, and outside of that, use common sense.

As our planet sees increasingly frequent natural disasters –like the freeze in Texas or increased hurricanes – the need for portable and reliable backup power is more important than ever. While portable power generators by makers like Yamaha and Honda have been around for a minute, a pile of advancements makes these new inverter generators more efficient and much safer. Here are three reasons why you should spend the extra cash to get the best generator on the market.

What is an inverter generator?

The mobile powerplant game has come a long way in only the past few years. The results are much quieter and more efficient powerplants that require less maintenance and upkeep. This new batch is changing the way portable power is viewed. At the same time, these contraptions used to be noisy, annoying, and required a lot of attention to the fuel levels and carbon monoxide (CO).

According to Consumer Reports, these new inverter models electronically throttles the engine up and down to meet the power demand instead of running full bore all the time. This is not only more efficient and safe but also way less annoying. These are clearly the best generators on the market today.

There are also three different classes of inverter generators these days. These classes are meant to help customers decide which one they need to get to avoid overspending. The classes break down as “Large,” “Midsized,” and “recreational.” These categories represent the power output as well as the physical size and weight.

The inverter is the best generator

One of the biggest reasons to go with a new inverter generator is to measure and regulate CO emissions. Not only is this better for the planet, but it is also much safer for the user. Every year people die from CO asphyxiation from running these little engines in enclosed spaces.

These inverter generators reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning by offering new models that feature a built-in sensor that triggers an automatic shutoff if CO builds up to dangerous levels in an enclosed space. And some also have engines that emit less CO in the first place. This is a net positive from every angle. Better for the planet and us as individuals.

Consumer Reports takes this CO shut-off function so seriously that the publication will not recommend any generator that doesn’t have it.

How much more efficient are the new versions?

Inverter powerplants with this CO shut-off are safer, but they are also much friendlier to your wallet. Because of their ability to electronically regulate the amount of power output based on how much is needed, they burn far less fuel than older gennies.

Even if fuel cost isn’t the main concern, the amount of time spent filling it up and watching the fuel gauge might be worth it alone. Whether you are using one in your RV or tailgating at the game, not having to refuel all the time can be a major plus. These electronically variable inverter generators can stay running for so much longer than other generators because of their ability to throttle down when less power is needed.

How loud are inverter generators?

Maybe the best part of these new inverter generators is that generators are finally not the most annoying sound on Earth. “You can carry on a conversation next to an inverter generator,” says Dave Trezza, who oversees CR’s generator testing.

Old generators make such a loud, grating noise that the subtlety of inverter generators might be worth the added cost. Whether you are trying to run your AC at night after a summer storm or trying to hang with friends at a tailgate, generator noise can easily drive most people up the wall. Inverter generators are so much friendlier than others.

Spending money on this kind of gear sucks

Buying this kind of gear always sucks. It’s something that most of us never want to use, but when the time comes, it’s sure nice to have. Inverter generators are more expensive than traditional portable gennies, but the advantages are clear. Next time you go shopping for one, pick the safer, more efficient, and quieter unit–you’ll be glad you did.

While the Kia Stinger is a beloved car by those who’ve had the good fortune to drive one, that may not have been enough. Although not completely confirmed, the Stinger is likely on its last legs. It’s rumored that Kia has canceled the car, but the Kia Stinger may rise from its ashes as an EV instead.

Why the Kia Stinger is probably canceled

According to Motor1, it’s not an industry secret that the Stinger hasn’t been selling well. The Stinger was Kia’s worst-selling model in America. Kia sold under 14,000 Stingers in the U.S. in 2019. In 2020, sales dropped to about 12,500. Despite the rebounding economy, the Stinger doesn’t look like it’s recovering well in 2021.

Motor1 said that Stinger’s only seen a 147 unit increase in year-to-date sales compared to 2020. Like many other canceled cars, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Kia canceled the Stinger because of poor sales. According to Motor1, that’s what’s rumored right now. Kia hasn’t outright confirmed this, but Motor1 wrote that plans posted by a Korean car blog said that Kia would stop producing the Stinger in early 2022.

The Kia Stinger story and why it could be an EV

According to Motor1, it would be strange for Kia to cancel the Stinger now since it received an update not that long ago. The car itself isn’t old. Green Car Reports wrote that the Stinger was unveiled in 2017. That means that it has only been around for less than five years.

It would also make sense for Kia to do something drastic since there’s not much history behind the car, and it’s not selling well. Like Green Car Reports said, even back when Kia unveiled the Stinger in 2017, Kia executives gave hints that it could become an EV. In 2020, Green Car Reports said that Kia execs again gave hints that the Stinger may become an EV due to a changing “appetite” for EVs.

Kia does have plans to electrify its lineup. The company plans on introducing 11 EV models by 2026. While not many details are known about those 11 EVs right now, the Stinger EV can be one of them. After all, canceled cars have been revived as EVs before. One of the bigger examples is the Hummer. It was canceled years ago but recently came back as an EV.

The current and future Kia EV lineup

Kia may turn the Stinger into an EV in a bid to revive its sales. The Stinger is already inviting itself to become an EV in a way. The Stinger is supposed to be a performance-driven car, and if it had some electric motors, it could be even quicker.

One way or another, Kia’s EV lineup is only growing. The Kia EV6 is already in production and is set to debut in the U.S. next year. The other EV in Kia’s lineup is the Niro EV, and it’s received praise as well.  What’s worth noting is that both the Niro EV and the EV6 are SUVs. If the Stinger does become an EV, it can serve as a valuable segment for Kia.

Stellantis has set the 2022 Ram 1500 BackCountry’s starting MSRP at $40,085, just under the Laramie’s $42,080.

The Ram 1500 Big Horn and Lone Star models at a glance

According to Ram, the 1500 Big Horn is available with or without the Lone Star designation, depending upon which configuration is chosen. There are two V6 and two V8 engines to choose from, with one of each combining an electric drive motor creating a torque-enhanced hybrid version. The non-hybrid V6 is the sole diesel option. Each engine configuration is backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission providing power to either two-wheel or FWD systems.

Both the Big Horn and Lone Star models are available in crew cab or quad cab configurations in a variety of colors and choices of wheels to customize the appearance of the truck further. There’s also a list of standard and available safety features. The Big Horn and Lone Star are positioned just above the base-model Tradesman and below the slightly more luxurious Laramie, with a base MSRP of $37,390.
