Airplanes are commonly regarded as the safest and quickest form of travel in the world. The convenience of air travel even inspires some consumers to purchase their own private planes. Elon Musk has even expressed interest in creating an electric Tesla plane capable of supersonic speed.

Meanwhile, helicopters are also commonly used for recreational activity and as a vehicle for first responders in dire situations. Still, NPR reports that tragic helicopter accidents in recent years have called the safety of these vehicles into question. Are airplanes or helicopters more secure?

Why are airplanes so safe?

Airplanes are constantly being updated with new safety technology to protect passengers, even in a crash. Your seat cushion acts as a flotation device and is also completely resistant to fire. Meanwhile, the yellow oxygen masks above the seats can help you breathe in the event of sudden depressurization.

All airplanes are also subject to rigorous testing before being purchased by commercial airlines. The wings are bent at various angles to determine how much pressure is needed to snap the wing. Brakes are also tested, and how long the tail needs to be dragged along the runway during takeoff. Ingestion testing determines how much of an impact flying obstacles will have on any aircraft’s windows and engines. Additionally, testers make sure that all the plane’s major components function properly in extreme temperatures. If the aircraft fails any of these tests, it won’t be approved for commercial use.

Aircraft control also plays a huge part in in-flight safety for both commercial airlines and helicopters. A plane can only leave the airspace once it’s been cleared for take-off by these operators. They keep an eye on the sky to keep planes from smashing into each other. Becoming an aircraft controller requires at least 200 hours of training and additional years of experience before getting employed by an airline. The pilots themselves need to have 1,500 hours of flight time before they can operate a major aircraft.

Safety concerns with helicopters

Helicopter pilots have to accrue the same flight hours before getting in the cockpit. Despite this, the fatal accident rate for helicopter flights rose between 2017 and 2018. However, the accident rate dropped again in 2019, and the rate of fatal accidents this decade dropped by 50%, according to NPR.

Most of these accidents are caused by recreational rides, such as the one taken by Kobe Bryant last year. Bryant frequently traveled in a personal helicopter to his games to avoid congestion on the L.A. freeways. According to NPR coverage, the pilot had been traveling through heavy clouds and fog. These conditions were apparently so bad that local police forces had grounded their own helicopters for the day.

Accidents like that one make up 25% of fatal helicopter crashes. Fortunately, recreational helicopter flights only account for 3% of helicopter flights overall. NPR says that helicopters from news teams, police, and sight-seeing tours are among the safest.

Helicopters probably aren’t as safe as planes

NPR explains that 0.72 deaths occurred every 100,000 hours of helicopter flight time a few years ago. Commercial airplane flights typically have zero deaths per year, despite shuttling millions of people each day. However, both transportation methods are far safer than car travel, even when you’re just driving through a parking lot.

Still, passengers and pilots should be wary about flying their own leisure planes and helicopters. Never ignore unsafe weather conditions because you’re in a hurry to reach your destination. The United Helicopter Safety Team also discourages pilots from flying too low to the ground. Additionally, training to perform maneuvers like autorotation can safely land a helicopter during a malfunction.

While most drivers spent time at home last year and rarely went out on the roads, car accidents seem to be up exponentially this year. In this instance, a silly squirrel ran out into the street and caused a car accident involving an Audi Q7. Was this a case of distracted driving, or was the squirrel looking to cause a little chaos?

While the squirrel might be sort of at fault here, what happened here? According to the Hingham Police Department in Hingham, Maryland, the driver drove off the road early in a single-vehicle car accident. The young driver said the squirrel ran out into the road, and to avoid hitting it, the vehicle went off the right side of the road. Half of the 2014 Audi Q7 ended up inside the house.

Unfortunately, the house wasn’t just any house. This house happened to be built by the ancestor of President Abraham Lincoln. The Samuel Lincoln Cottage was constructed in 1650. Samuel Lincoln is Abraham Lincoln’s great-grandfather. It wasn’t clear if any of President Lincoln’s descendants knew the squirrel.

More details about the car accident

The Audi Q7 was traveling east on North Street when the squirrel ran into the road. The driver and the vehicle went off the right side of the road, drove over the sidewalk and into the front of the house. The driver was uninjured in the car accident and managed to get out of the car to wait for help. Hingham Fire Department and the Hingham Building Inspector both responded to the call.

A police officer issued the 19-year-old woman a traffic citation for failing to remain in the marked lanes. This is a relatively minor violation. The actual statute is below.

“Drivers must operate entirely within a single lane, which means that drivers must maintain their lanes and avoid drifting or swerving into an adjoining lane or the shoulder. Second, drivers must not move from their respective travel lanes without first ascertaining whether it is safe to do so.”

Massachusets Government

Police officers do not always issue citations after car accidents. However, it seems the responding officers felt the car accident was worthy of a ticket. In the photos above, you can see that the car was heavily damaged in the accident. The area is residential and nearby signs indicate a speed of 30 mph.

The NHTSA says risky driving behaviors are up

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released a study showing that even though fewer cars were on the road during the pandemic, traffic fatalities increased. The NHTSA noted that though Americans drove less during 2020, traffic fatalities were the highest since 2007. Since 2019, fatalities were up 7.2%, bringing the number to 38,680 people that died on the roads during 2020.

Data from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) shows that the miles Americans drove were down about 13.2%, a decrease of 430.1 billion miles. The traffic rate for fatalities in 2020 was up to 1.37 deaths per 100 million, up from 1.11 in 2019. “NHTSA’s analysis shows that the main behaviors that drove this increase include: impaired driving, speeding, and failure to wear a seat belt.”

The moral of this dodgy squirrel story? Buckle your seatbelt, abide by posted speed limits, and watch out for small, fluffy-tailed animals crossing the road to avoid car accidents. Also, don’t crash into Abraham Lincoln’s home. That has to bring on bad vibes.

For many individuals and businesses, 2020 was a year of challenges. The economy took a hit during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In response, several automakers have taken the lead in innovation, as many turn toward electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Sales have started to rebound in 2021 as the economy starts to level out.

BMW has posted some of their highest sales numbers in some time recently. It seems that people are back to car shopping after a year spent at home.

The BMW Group had a good year in 2019 before the pandemic. Their sales were up 7.1% from the previous year, which is a good but still modest gain. The company expected to see more growth in 2020, but that was not accounting for a pandemic. While they did have slow sales in 2020, it was better than anyone at BMW Group expected.

BMW was only down by 2%. The last quarter of 2020 posted some good numbers for them, and their light truck sales were up. Business Wire says that those fourth-quarter sales were up 9.6%.

The company managed to hold its own in a very challenging year. The fourth-quarter sales for 2020 were only a precursor to the first six months of 2021.

BMW posts sales for the first half of 2021

BMW’s sales for the first quarter of 2021 were better than their pre-pandemic sales. 2019 was a good year for BMW, but 2021 is proving to be even better. According to the BMW Group, they have sold over 1.3 million vehicles. This is all of BMW group, which includes BMW, Rolls-Royce, and MINI.

That is a 39% gain over the previous year and is an all-time high in sales for the group. They are coming back strong from an economy that struggled through a pandemic.

BMW Group also had record-high sales of electric and hybrid vehicles, up over 148% from the last year. Consumers are starting to turn toward electric cars, and the line-up profited from the evolving economy. Their fully electric sales, excluding the plug-in hybrid, were up 183%.

The forefront of innovation

On the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for customer brands and sales, Pieter Nota spoke about the shift to electric vehicles and the company’s response. He says they will continue to produce fully electric vehicles and innovate in that arena. The upcoming BMW iX and i4 are fully electric vehicles that he says will represent a new era in electric mobility.

BMW also plans to release new fully electric vehicles and raise their sales of electric vehicles by 50% per year. They are looking to the future, and by 2030, they expect half of their total sales will be electric vehicles. This would be around 10 million vehicles.

According to Reuters, BMW is also looking into hydrogen-powered vehicles. They plan to introduce a zero-emissions SUV in 2022. The company is committed to a fleet of vehicles that will be emissions-free very soon.

As the economy begins to recover, look for other automakers to start posting good sales, especially those investing in electric and alternative-powered vehicles. Auto manufacturers who are paving the way in new technology and providing consumers with new and exciting ways to drive are the ones that will lead the way forward. BMW Group is one of those automakers, and it seems that their goal to produce 10 million electric vehicles in the next decade might be in reach.

Many cars are stylish in their own right, but customizations can make any given model truly stand out. Many modifications aren’t covered by insurance, though you can get some costs covered for installing necessities like wheelchair lifts. If you’re looking for more subtle customization options, consider getting a new vanity plate.

Vanity plates require a little extra planning, as they have to be renewed each year like a regular license plate. However, CostHelper breaks down the average cost of a vanity plate and how to get one.

Why do people buy vanity plates?

If you’ve ever looked into car modding, you know how expensive it can be. Even cheap paint jobs can cost up to $875, depending on the size of your vehicle. Additionally, if you want a thorough custom paint job, it will probably cost upwards of $1,000. Furthermore, showroom-quality paint with a glossy finish might cost as much as $5,000. On the other hand, vanity plates usually only cost somewhere in the double digits.

Drivers also need to be careful when choosing customization options, as making certain modifications puts you at risk of voiding your car insurance. According to Global News Canada, one Subaru driver had to pay $35,000 in damages after a wreck, even though he wasn’t at fault. It was because he had modified his car with a performance exhaust, which was also quite pricey at nearly $2,000. Insurance providers generally don’t consider vanity plates to be liabilities, but you should still review your policy to be sure.

How much does it cost in my state?

The initial fee varies across different states. Some states might only require as little as five dollars, but $20-$50 seems to be the average charge. In some states, specific designs on vanity plates can also increase their prices. For example, Autoblog reports that specialty license plates cost around $70 in Tennessee.

California requires all drivers to pay $98 for a vanity plate, though discounts are offered for certain affiliations. Texas requires drivers to pay extra per added digit, meaning drivers can pay up to $195 in renewal fees. Texas is also known for auctioning rare and valuable vanity plates, with some costing hundreds of dollars.

According to CostHelper, renewing a custom vanity plate can be anywhere from $0-$80. Renewal charges are typically collected yearly or every other year, depending on your state. Some states, including Texas, offer discounted rates if you pay on a three-year, five-year, or ten-year schedule.

How to order a custom vanity plate

First, check your state’s local guidelines to see which characters and messages are permitted for your vanity plate. Some states don’t allow spaces on vanity plates, and many prohibit obscene words or phrases. In other states, some vehicles aren’t permitted to have any vanity plates at all. For example, according to the Pennsylvania DMV, you cannot get one for your boat in Pennsylvania.

You also need to check an online registry to ensure that you don’t share the same plate number as another driver. As for the plate itself, you find a wide variety of options depending on your state of residence. Once ordered, you can expect to receive it in as little as eight weeks.

According to Autoblog, you can transfer your vanity plate to a new car, as long the vehicle type doesn’t change. All states require a small fee for transferring the plate to a new vehicle, around five or six dollars. However, your custom plates can’t be transferred to another driver.

Unfortunately, vanity plates typically aren’t covered by insurance. If your provider doesn’t cover damages because you have one, you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to dispute that decision. That aside, vanity plates are still a creative way to spice up your car without breaking the bank.
