With temperatures on the rise and heatwaves pounding the United Arab Emirates, it will try almost anything to cool things down. Anything, like using drones to shoot electricity at clouds to artificially make rain. Just like using drones as flying cars, flying drones seeding clouds is a new take on an old idea. 

Environmentally, using drones to zap clouds is better than salt flairs

And that old idea; cloud seeding, came with lots of concerns, both environmentally, and in terms of cost and effectiveness. And it can be dangerous for the pilots. Going in and out of clouds means flying through both updrafts and downdrafts, bouncing the planes around. 

Salt flairs are what has traditionally been fired into clouds. The UAE had over 200 runs just last year. National News reported that 2020 saw an excess of rainfall totals as a result. A typical year sees less than four inches of rain. 

In all, the UAE shot almost 5,000 salt crystal flairs into rain-bearing convective clouds. A high-tech collection of radars monitor the atmosphere. Data is reviewed and once seedable clouds are detected a team of planes are sent into the clouds. The UAE has been conducting cloud seeding experiments since 2004 according to the BBC.

The US seeds clouds in eight states each year

We do it in the US, as well. Cloud seeding has increased snowpacks in the Nevada mountains by more than 10-percent. Cloud seeding in Wyoming saw a 5-10-percent snowpack increase as well. At least eight states in the US use some form of cloud seeding. 

But this is a new approach where drones go into the clouds and shoot electricity at them triggering rain production. Electrical charges on cloud droplets cause water droplets to merge. When large enough they fall as rain.

The UAE gets most of its water from underground springs. But low rainfall numbers, excessive heat, and high evaporation is depleting the groundwater. Now, seeding projects are happening in the UAE’s northeast regions, where there are cumulus clouds in the summer. 

Canada seeds clouds to reduce the size of hail

In Canada, clouds are seeded in the summer for a completely different reason. Large hail develops there causing lots of damage. By seeding the clouds it produces more rain and hail, but the hail is smaller. As global warming continues, Canada has seen more days of rain in the summer. 

Seeding with drones is also being done for planting in forests and in agriculture too. With fires ravaging forests, a quicker, less expensive way to reforest is by dropping seeds. Drone swarms are flown in pre-programmed routes. Each eight-foot drone carries 57 pounds of seeds laced with a potent pepper. This keeps squirrels from eating them.

Camping is an excellent way to experience the great outdoors, but some people don’t like to rough it. With teardrop campers, you can get a healthy dose of nature from the comfort of a nicely equipped RV. Even better, some campers are made with environmentally friendly materials.

That’s where Carapate comes in. This French retro camper manufacturer has quickly gained popularity overseas. Its base campers are highly affordable and come with plenty of optional features. What options do Carapate RVs offer, and how can you get one?

The Carapate teardrop camper measures 65 square feet, which can house two average-sized adults and one child passenger. This model weighs only 992 pounds, so even some compact cars could tow this camper without issue, Business Insider reports.

Its lightweight construction comes from sustainable materials, especially the main body’s recyclable marine plywood. Wood finishing adorns the exterior, giving the Carapate retro camper a nautical vibe.

The main body also houses a modular foam mattress, which can be split into three parts and folded into a sofa. Passengers can enjoy natural light from three wide sliding windows. And a skylight on the roof comes with a mosquito net and blackout blinds to ensure a peaceful rest.

To make up for the limited space inside this teardrop camper, riders can make use of multiple interior and exterior sliding drawers. The kitchen, available as an upgrade, is located inside one of these exterior drawers. Carapate also thoughtfully included detectors for carbon monoxide and smoke as safety precautions.

The Carapate camper’s extra amenities

Optional features for the Carapate retro teardrop camper can be purchased through various so-called backpacks. Tech-savvy riders will probably enjoy the Lightning backpack, with USB ports and outlets to charge electronics or plugin TV sets. Similarly, the Sparkle backpack provides eco-friendly LED lights, with additional sockets and a 90-amp battery. And the Sun backpack includes solar panels for greener energy.

The kitchen comes in the Marmiton backpack, including a stovetop and a 12-gallon foldable sink. And the Corkscrew backpack comes with an electric fridge and a fold-out cutting board. This bundle also includes cookware and table cutlery, plus storage containers for leftovers.

For the exterior, another backpack adds window tinting for additional privacy. You can also get insulation and blackout curtains like the ones on the skylight. The Shield backpack is great for protecting your Caparate camper against the elements with weather-and-UV-resistant fabric. The outer shell can also have a waterproof covering.

Though the interior already makes great use of its available space, you can get additional solutions with the Pelote backpack. This gives you four leather storage compartments located on the ceiling. More canvas storage nets are also included — a large one for the wall and three smaller ones under the leather cubbies.

You can also customize the tires, license plate holder, and rims to match your favorite backpack. Plus, you can choose from 20 colors for the exterior.

A bare-bones version of the Carapate camper — the Carriole — is also available for purchase. It has a lower starting price and doesn’t offer any of the optional backpacks.

Where can you buy one of these retro trailers?

The lighter Carriole costs only around $12,500, and the base Carapate retails for $16,522. All of the backpacks run $20,328, meaning you’d pay $36,850 for a fully loaded Carapate teardrop camper.

According to Curbed, these teardrop campers are available only in Europe. However, the article speculates that demand for greener RVs stateside might bring Carapate models across the pond. The company has also expressed interest in selling its stylish campers to American consumers.

Lexus makes some of the best SUVs on the market right now. However, many Lexus models don’t have creative names. That’s very much the case with the 2021 Lexus RX, which customers shouldn’t confuse with the 2021 Lexus RXL. Here’s a look at how those two similarly-named SUVs are the same and how they’re different from each other.

What these two Lexus SUVs have in common

Like the names imply, there are quite a few similarities between the RX and the RXL. For example, they’re both in the midsize crossover SUV segment, and, according to Edmunds, they’re almost identical in many ways. On the outside, they look very similar, and it wouldn’t be strange if someone confused one for the other based on their looks.

On the inside, they both share many of the same features. For instance, both SUVs have a luxurious and well-designed interior that uses plenty of high-quality materials. Furthermore, both SUVs have many standard smart safety features, and they both have a comfortable ride and comfortable seating. As a result of those similarities, both Lexus SUVs have great reviews. However, they’re both ultimately different in one critical way.

The 2021 Lexus RXL is bigger than the 2021 Lexus RX

According to Edmunds, the RXL has a stretched wheelbase when compared to the regular RX. This change allowed Lexus to add a third-row of seating to the RXL. With that being said, this additional third row has its drawbacks. As Edmunds said, some competitors in the SUV with third-row seating segment will have a more spacious third-row than the RXL will.

On top of that, while the RXL can seat two more people than the regular RX can, there’s not much space behind those third-row seats. As such, the RXL also has less cargo capacity than some of its peers have. Furthermore, this upgrade isn’t free. The regular RX starts at about $52,000, and the RXL starts at about $57,000. Additionally, picking the RXL will mean losing a trim option. The regular RX has access to the F Sport trim, while the RXL upgrade loses access to the trim. Instead, the RXL gets the Luxury trim, which is not an option on the regular RX.

Elsewhere, the RXL received upgrades for its 2021 model year. For example, Edmunds said that more smart safety features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are now standard on the RXL. Additionally, wireless smartphone charging is now an optional feature. 

The Lexus RX has continued to sell well

These features, when combined with Lexus’ reputation for making high-quality cars that are very safe and reliable, and it’s obvious why the RX has continued to sell well. Indeed, the sales numbers back it all up. According to GoodCarBadCar, the RX has had nine straight years where Lexus sold more than 100,000 units.

Lexus was also able to keep that streak alive in 2020, despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the massive recession that happened. In fact, the last time that Lexus sold fewer than 100,000 RXs in a year was during the Great Recession back from 2008 to 2011. 

So far, in 2021, the RX has continued to sell very well. By June 2021, Lexus had sold about 56,000 RX models. This means that Lexus is currently on track to continue its streak of selling at least 100,000 RXs a year. As the economy continues to recover, there’s no doubt that the RX and the RXL will be some of the cars that customers will try to get their hands on.

Consumer Reports rates models and brands in an array of categories. Two of the primary categories include predicted reliability and consumer satisfaction. In a recent study of which cars are the most satisfying to consumers, Tesla crushed Toyota in terms of satisfaction ratings.

How happy a car can make its drivers is one of the oldest and most important feuds between brands. Each manufacturer strives to bring its consumers exactly what they want. Some models and brands are meant for niche markets. 

Others are intended for a wide audience that ranges from base trim mainstream buyers to more expensive range toppers that approach the luxury segment when it comes to quality. While Toyota may often be on top in terms of value and reliability, Tesla took the crown for the highest Consumer Reports satisfaction ratings.  

Do people like Tesla cars?

Tesla is a popular brand with CEO Elon Musk at its head. This year, the Consumer Reports satisfaction survey proved that people really love their Tesla cars. In fact, the Tesla EV brand earned the highest consumer satisfaction score of 88. For the overall driving experience, Tesla models scored a 5/5 cumulative score after the survey. 

Tesla scored a 4/5 for both comfort and in-car electronics. These cars offer an accommodating cabin experience on most fronts. The Tesla EV brand scored a 3/5 for in-cabin storage. In fact, the only low mark Tesla received in terms of consumer satisfaction is a 1/5 rating for value. 

Lincoln is second place for satisfaction. Then, Ram––a strictly pickup truck brand––takes third place. Toyota is down below Chrysler, Subaru, Hyundai, Porsche, Dodge, and Mazda, respectively. It’s satisfaction isn’t necessarily low, but it is certainly far inferior to the Tesla EV brand’s consumer satisfaction rating of 88/100. 

Toyota came in 10th place, losing the satisfaction feud to Tesla

In tenth place, Toyota comes in with a consumer satisfaction rating of 71/100. This is actually great compared with lower scores like Cadillac’s 59/100. Still, it’s pretty clear that Tesla totally takes the win here over the popular Japanese car brand. 

Toyota’s 71/100 overall score for consumer satisfaction is 17 points lower than Tesla’s winning score. Owners gave Toyota a 4/5 for the driving experience and a 3/5 for comfort. Then the ratings dip low to a 1/5 score for in-car electronics. 

Both cabin storage and value earn Toyota scores of 2/5 from consumers in the survey. So Toyota did have a point on Tesla for value. Other than that, however, the Tesla EV brand is the winner of the feud to see which car brand is the most satisfying. 

How does Consumer Reports rate the vehicles for consumer satisfaction?

The survey is done by sending out questionnaires for owners of 369,000 models. The highest scoring options are those that have the most votes for “definitely yes” owners “would buy again.” Basically, if owners love their car so much that they would buy another one, that model climbs to the top of the consumer satisfaction charts. 

The five categories the cars are scored in also contribute to the scoring. However, it’s important to note that while 13 Toyota models are being judged, Tesla only has four in its lineup. Tesla clearly crushed Toyota in terms of consumer satisfaction numbers from CR. Still, it’s important to view the data with perspective.
