As time and technology march on, ‘ordinary’ cars like the Civic Type R start to catch up to supercars. And sometimes, even brand flagships get one-upped by succeeding models. That’s the situation McLaren finds itself in right now. The British company has a new model, the 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider. And on paper, the convertible out-accelerates McLaren’s own racetrack-ready Senna.

The 755-hp 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider drops its top but keeps its performance up

First, a bit of background. In 2019, McLaren released the 720S along with the convertible 720S Spider. It then spent some time tweaking, updating, and redesigning the 720S into the 2021 765LT. And now, the 765LT gets the same convertible treatment as the 720S to make the 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider.

Usually, turning a car into a convertible requires additional chassis and structure bracing to make up for the lack of a roof. Doing so adds weight, though, which is OK for a ‘regular’ car, but bad for a performance-oriented supercar. However, the 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider, like all of the company’s models, has a stiff carbon-fiber tub. It’s so stiff that the 765LT Spider doesn’t need any extra structural support, MotorTrend says.

As a result, the Spider’s mechanical folding hardtop only adds 108 pounds to the supercar’s curb weight. And at 3,060 pounds, the McLaren 765LT Spider is 176 pounds lighter than the 720S Spider. That’s thanks to weight-savings measures like a titanium exhaust, carbon-fiber aero elements, and thinner glass. The 765LT Spider’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission even has a few components made out of “Formula-1-grade” materials. Though it’s worth pointing out that curb weight is without the stereo and A/C, The Drive notes.

Besides less weight, the 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider gets a few performance upgrades over the 720S Spider. It has a quicker steering rack and carbon-ceramic brakes, Roadshow reports, as well as lighter forged-alloy wheels wrapped with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. Also, a carbon-fiber center console, exposed floor, and seats. Plus, a wider front track and lower ride height as well as a reprogrammed active suspension system with new dampers and springs.

Oh, and it’s also more powerful.

From 0-60 mph, the 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider is faster than the McLaren Senna supercar

Like the 765LT, the 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider has a mid-mounted 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. It’s rated at 755 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, 45 more hp and 22 more lb-ft than the 720S Spider has. And that lets the 765LT Spider go 0-60 mph in a claimed 2.7 seconds and 0-124 mph in 7.2 seconds. Plus, the convertible runs the ¼-mile in 10 seconds flat.

In a straight line, the McLaren 765LT Spider speeds past the 720S Spider. In Car and Driver’s hands, the latter car went 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds. The 720S Spider would also lose a ¼-mile drag race, as it needs 10.3 seconds to go the distance. However, because the 765LT Spider has shorter gear ratios, it maxes out at ‘just’ 205 mph, 7 mph slower than the 720S Spider.

That’s not the only earlier McLaren the new convertible can out-accelerate, though, at least briefly. The McLaren Senna also has a carbon-fiber tub and a mid-mounted 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a seven-speed DCT. Filled up with fluids, though, the Senna is 30 lbs lighter than the 765LT Spider, Car and Driver reports. And its V8 makes 789 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. But even so, its 0-60 mph time is ‘just’ 2.8 seconds.

However, the McLaren Senna can quickly make up any lost ground. Its 0-124 mph time is 6.8 seconds and its top speed is 208 mph. Yet there’s one more wrinkle to the speed comparison. In its Senna test, Car and Driver recorded a ¼-mile time of 10.1 seconds. So, theoretically, the 765LT Spider could still squeak past.

How much does it cost?

The 2021 McLaren 765LT Spider doesn’t just keep pace with the Senna, though. It does it for significantly less money. However, it’s not what you’d call cheap. Prices start at $382,500; the stereo and A/C are no-cost options.

If you want one, though, you’ll have to act fast. McLaren is only making 765 examples of its new convertible. And only a third of the production is earmarked for North America.

Driving the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has proven to be an incredible experience. But this four-door electric Ford Mustang isn’t like the sports car I used to know! There are plenty of features that are still processing, but I’ve gathered five pros and three cons so far.

I’ve been enjoying the week with the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E First Edition with eAWD and the extended range battery pack. It has an MSRP of $58,300 with a $1,100 destination fee, and the Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clear Coat is electrifying! 

The First Edition package includes extra goodies such as red-painted front and rear brake calipers, brushed aluminum pedal covers, front door scuff plates with First Edition badging, and perforated ActiveX seating material. 

Five Mustang Mach-E Pros 

1. The ride is smooth 

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E has a very smooth ride. Large bumps in country roads and dips don’t seem to phase it. The suspension easily absorbs impacts without rattling the chassis or jostling passengers. There is virtually no body roll around curves either.

2. The tech is outstanding 

Instead of having a head-up display, the Mustang Mach-E features a digital gauge display above the dash. It provides your speed, battery charge, and the speed limit based on road sign recognition. You can customize it to display different features too. Also, the navigation displays how much you go up or down in elevation!

There is a wireless charging pad in front of the center console, and you can connect two smartphones simultaneously. I had one phone displaying the navigation and another phone playing a podcast. 

The massive 15.5-inch touchscreen is beautiful. The graphics look great, and the system is very responsive. Plus, it’s not touchscreen only. There is a physical knob for adjusting the radio, and on that note, the Bang & Olufsen audio system sounds fantastic. 

With the 360-degree overhead camera view and front-facing camera, the Mustang Mach-E is very easy to maneuver.

3. There is so much space 

There are 29.7 cubic feet of cargo space in the rear with up to 59.7 cubic feet total. If you run out of space in the trunk area, then you can access the front trunk or frunk for even more room. Plus, there is a large storage cubby under the wireless phone charging pad, and the center console is pretty deep. 

4. This Mustang is fast 

This one is probably a no-brainer. Of course, a muscle car is fast. But the Mustang Mach-E features instant torque, and it’s something all enthusiasts should experience. With 346 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque, you can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds. There is no trouble with merging into traffic or climbing up steep inclines.

5. The Mach-E is comfortable 

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E provides a relaxing ride with its quiet interior and stable performance. You can adjust the leather seats to provide the optimal amount of lumbar support and thigh support. You can also have a commanding view of the road. 

The passenger seat reclines pretty far back, allowing passengers to nap or enjoy the panoramic roof. The more relaxed driving modes provide ambient soft blue lighting, and you can put the infotainment screen in relaxed mode if you only want it to display the time.

Three Mustang Mach-E Cons

1. The at-home charger is a little weak 

Upon receiving the Mustang Mach-E, I was excited about the home charging cord that’s included. But it’s the 120-volt adaptor, which gains a charge of three minutes per hour. It can take forever to generate juice this way. 

But with the optional 240-volt adaptor, you get about 19 miles of charge per hour. You can also access DC fast-charging stations to replenish 80% of the battery in about 52 minutes. You can have one installed at home or find charging stations nearby with the FordPass app. 

2. There could be a little more tech 

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is incredibly fresh and modern, but it doesn’t have ventilated seats. Other models like the Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid and the Mazda CX-9 feature cooled seats and perhaps they’ll be added later. But the automatic temperature climate control system will instantly cool you off. It’s powerful, fast, and effective. 

Also, the roof has a panoramic glass window. It doesn’t open. I would enjoy feeling the fresh air. It doesn’t have electrochromic glass either, so you can’t adjust the tint. But it’s designed to help the vehicle stay cooler on hot days and warmer on winter days, and it works extremely well. 

3. The brakes take getting used to

You don’t have to worry about stopping in the Mustang Mach-E. The brakes are very confident. But they can also be a little grabby. Until I got used to them, my passengers and I were facing abrupt stops and being jostled forward. After a bit of time spent behind the wheel, you’ll learn how to achieve smooth stops in no time. 

I wish I had more time than just a week with the Mustang Mach-E. I would like to get to know it a little more. I have another road trip coming up, so I’ll spend a few more hours behind the wheel and provide updates about my overall experience.

Ford shocked the world by revealing its first capable electric pickup truck, but is it getting the credit that it deserves? Ford’s new lineup has two new key players. The Ford F-150 Lightning and the Ford Mustang Mach-E were created to usher the blue oval brand into the era of the electric. Ford has intentionally converted two of its biggest nameplates, the Mustang, and the F-150, into electric vehicles to attract consumers. In an effort to handle expectations, has Ford been more reserved with its F-150 Lightning’s range estimates than needed?

How far can a Ford F-150 Lightning really go?

Range has been one of the biggest hurdles for EVs for years. Thanks to the development of new battery technology, electric vehicle battery ranges have made major strides. Some of the first electric vehicles got under 100 miles of range on a single charge. Today many automakers are producing electric vehicles with standard battery ranges of 200+ miles.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has two different battery classes. There’s the standard range battery and the more expensive extended-range battery for those looking to charge their pickup less. The standard range battery offers an EPA (environmental protection agency) estimated range of 230 miles. The extended-range battery offers a whopping estimated range of 300 miles, a huge achievement for an electric vehicle.

According to InsideEVs, Ford may be holding out on us. An automotive journalist claims that they saw an estimated range of 472 miles on a Ford F-150 Lightning model. This range is mind-blowing and beats out more seasoned EVs by a long shot. An estimated range this massive will likely come with a high price tag, but if Ford did accomplish this amazing range feat, they deserve major kudos.

How much will the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning cost?

A 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning base model, the Lightning Pro, will start at $39,974. The Lightning XLT model will cost $52,974. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat trim is estimated to start at $67,474. The highest level Platinum trim will cost almost $90,000.

The cool thing about F-150 Lightning pricing is that the electric pickup is eligible for federal and local tax credits. After tax credits, you could be looking at a price reduction of at least $7,500. That would bring the entry-level trim from $39,974 all the way down to a starting price of $32,474. Not a bad deal for the first electric F-150.

When can I buy the F-150 Lightning?

Thanks to a chip shortage, Ford models have been expensive and elusive. With a huge amount of preorders and an exciting lineup, Ford is expected to come out on top after the shortage. That being said, now isn’t a great time to think about purchasing a Ford model.

Orders and deliveries have been delayed by months. Ford currently cannot keep up with demand. The ordering process for the 2022 F-150 Lightning begins this Fall, but that doesn’t mean you’ll receive your vehicle anytime soon. Ford’s newest electric pickup is nothing short of revolutionary. It will just be tough to purchase.

Whether you’re adding a premium sound system to your car or just want a little more insulation, adding some sound deadening material can help quiet things down. However, adding more of this material can add a lot of weight and even get very expensive, depending on the car that you drive. Is adding sound deadening material to your car worth the money and effort?

What is sound deadening?

Simply put, sound deadening is when a noise-quieting material is placed on the sheet metal or plastic panels in a car in order to reduce the transfer of sound energy into the vehicle, according to Best Car Audio. The sound deadening material itself usually either comes in sheets with an adhesive backing or it can be sprayed on. Most cars come from the factory with sound deadening material already applied, however, more sound deadening material is typically applied to various parts of the car with bare sheet metal including the inside of the door panels, the cabin floor, and the cargo/trunk area.

Some benefits to adding sound deadening material to your car

The main benefit of adding more sound deadening to your car is the reduction of background noise. For example, many compact cars and SUVs will have a normal noise range of around 70 to 75 decibels when cruising.

By adding more sound deadening material, you can usually reduce those sound levels by another 4 to 5 decibels. In doing so, you’ll be able to hear your music more and even carry on a normal conversation in the car. Best Car Audio also notes that adding sound deadening material to the firewall, door skins, and floor can result in less wind noise as well.

Another benefit of adding sound deadening material to your car is that you’ll get better sound quality from your speakers. This works especially when you’re installing a complete premium sound system and want to optimize the sound throughout the car. Adding more sound deadening to your car’s trunk and door panels will aid in reducing the buzzing and rattling that you will typically get from having a loud sound system.

Yes. Speaking of the cost, adding more sound deadening to most cars can cost anywhere from $100 to $500, perhaps even more for specialty applications. But considering the added comfort, insulation, and overall quietness that sound deadening material can add to a car, it’s a worthwhile endeavor.
