It’s no secret that we like our pickup trucks. There’s a constant battle between the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, and Ram 1500 to be the best. But as trucks grow in size and popularity, they’re also becoming increasingly dangerous.

Pickup trucks are becoming more dangerous

Pickup trucks are one of the most popular options to buy. Trucks account for one out of every five vehicles sold, with the Ford F-150 as the most popular option in 2020. The Ford F-Series sold 787,422 units, the Chevrolet Silverado sold 586,675 models, and the Ram 1500 sold 563,676 new units in 2020.

But trucks are increasingly dangerous. They are 11 percent taller and 24 percent heavier than other options. This increased mass comes with decreased front sightlines and more significant blind spots. They make it more difficult to see pedestrians and smaller vehicles in front of you.

Consumer Reports Expert Keith Barry shared that trucks have taller heights and longer hoods. This can create blind spots that are 11 feet longer than the blind spots in sends and seven feet longer than SUVs.

This increases the risk of truck drivers running over someone in front of them because they simply can’t see them. Also, the taller front end and higher bumper on trucks may lead to more severe injuries upon impact, and the extra weight makes them harder to stop.

Are trucks doing anything to become safer?

According to KidsandCars.org, the most fatalities involved in pickup truck crashes are children between 12 and 23 months old. So, consumer Reports decided to investigate by asking auto manufacturers why pickup trucks are growing larger.

Stellantis, the parent company of Ram, declined to answer this question. But Ford and General Motors shared that the changes are driven by customer preferences. Trucks also need large grilles to support engine cooling while towing.

Consumer Reports shared that mandatory advanced safety technology such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, pre-collision warning, rear-cross traffic alert, and more can help improve safety. Designing roads that are safer for pedestrians and cyclists can help too.

Which truck is the safest?

The safest pickup truck for 2021 is the Ram 1500. The 2021 Ram 1500 is the only truck that earned a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick award, thanks to its excellent crash test results and optional LED headlights. But the headlights and other advanced safety features don’t come standard, so they do cost extra.

The Ram 1500 earned a Good score in each Insurance Insurance Highway Safety test. With National Highway Traffic Safety Administration testing, the Ram truck earned a five-star rating overall.

It only received four stars in the front-impact and rollover tests. So, if a crash couldn’t be avoided, all occupants or crash test dummies were well protected. The Quad Cab model didn’t earn the Top Safety Pick award due to having poorer standard headlights.

Available safety features include blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and available adaptive cruise control. For the record, the 2020 Ford F-150 is the second safest truck for 2021.

Kelley Blue Book knows that real off-roading requires. Some of the features include larger tires, skid plates, proper suspension, locking differentials, and an electric winch. Are you looking for some of the best off-road trucks on the market this year? Read on for options from Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet.

The 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor is one of the best off-road trucks

The Ford Ranger Tremor is one of Kelley Blue Book’s best off-road trucks | Ford

The 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor is a mid-size truck with almost everything necessary for offroading, Kelley Blue Book says. The new Tremor package adds a lot of great equipment like taller suspension, 32-inch tires, locking rear differential, and a broader stance. This will run you about $6,000 and can be added to a few different options. The added 10 inches adds a lot more ground clearance.

This package doesn’t deter from the on-road capabilities, either. The ride is improved, and the powertrain is still spunky enough to make for a fun ride and one of the best off-road trucks.

Starting Price: $40,995 (XLT) | Rating: 4.4

The 2021 Ram TRX is coming for the Raptor as one of the best off-road trucks

The 2021 Ram TRX might actually be a competitor against the Ford Raptor. It has a supercharged V8 that makes both on-road and off-road fun. The TRX also offers full-time four-wheel drive, which Kelley Blue Book praised.

“If you are ready to speed through sand washes in a purpose-built truck, you have a new full-size pickup to add to your wish list. The supercharged 6.2-liter 702-horsepower engine in the Ram 1500 TRX is a beast, far surpassing the Ford Raptor’s 450.”

Allyson Harwood | Kelley Blue Book

The TRX has an upgraded frame, long-travel suspension that is 13-inches in the front and 12-inches in the back, Bilstein E2 dampers, and 35-inch tires. It also has an electronic locking differential on the back, but the front does not have any traction. KBB suggested it might be the “ultimate mud running truck.”

Starting Price: $71,690 | Rating: 4.5

Best off-road trucks: the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor is a full-size truck with light-duty capabilities, but it does off-roading well. KBB suggests that the SuperCrew short-bed model has more wheel travel and upgraded racing shocks. It offers optional 37-inch tires and a 450 hp twin-turbo V6. A bigger supercharged V8 might be on the way sometime soon. The 2021 Raptor also has a variety of off-roading modes that make it one of the best off-road trucks for whatever adventure you might find.

Starting Price: $64,145 | Rating: 4.4

The 2021 Ram 2500 Power Wagon is heavy-duty

The 2021 Ram 2500 Power Wagon is one of the more heavy-duty options on the list. Kelly Blue Book suggests this truck can handle work and play. It has upgraded suspension, a 360-degree camera system, and a synthetic-line winch. The 6.4L V8 is standard and is best for slow-paced off-roading adventures. KBB thinks other trucks might better suit high-speed adventures.

Starting Price: $54,535 | Rating: 4.5

Don’t overlook the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

Kelley Blue Book praised the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 for a variety of reasons. As far as mid-size trucks go, the ZR2 does it all. It has an added two inches of suspension and a wider track that allows for wheel travel. Multimatic dampers offer high-speed damping control. The rear and front locking differentials and aggressive tires make this truck better for slow off-roading too. The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 comes with a 3.6L gas V6 or a diesel option that gets 20 mpg combined, which makes it one of the best off-road trucks.

Starting Price: $42,600 | Rating: 4.1

While the best off-road trucks might depend on your favorite location or plans, the trucks on this list have a lot to offer. Kelley Blue Book wants you to adventure safer and smarter during your off-roading escapades, so don’t test your limits in a regular truck.

The Lexus RX 350 already has a longstanding positive reputation among luxury SUVs. Consumer Reports calls it the best midsize SUV of 2021 because of its relative affordability, satisfying powertrain, and comfortable interior. Its hybrid sibling, the RX 450h, also has impressive fuel economy estimates for its class.

For 2022, Lexus added features for both of these SUVs, including a couple of new paint colors. Most of the RX lineup’s features remain unchanged, though you can expect some minor performance tweaks. What exactly do both of these RX models offer, and when will they debut?

The 2022 Lexus RX 350L and 450 hL at a glance

Lexus says both 2022 RX models have the same functional hollow stabilizer bars and shock absorbers. Also new for this model year are upgraded dampers, creating a smoother ride with a friction control monitor. Though it still features a stiff suspension, riders can enjoy a serene cabin with far more responsive handling than comparable SUVs.

The 2022 Lexus RX 350L is still powered by a 295-hp V6, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Consumer Reports gives the 2021 model a 0-60-mph time of 7.5 seconds. It’s also very efficient at that speed, rated for 20/27 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive.

The 2022 Lexus RX 450 HL uses even less fuel, reportedly getting 29 mpg combined city/highway. It gets its power from a V6 and two electric motors that produce a combined output of 308 hp.

MotorTrend reports that the RX 450’s drive is equally satisfying and quick as its gas-operated sibling. The engine might produce some whining at high speeds, but the continuously variable transmission is surprisingly more functional than the eight-speed gearbox.

In 2020, Lexus RX models finally got a standard touchscreen infotainment system to match other luxury rivals. It’s eight inches on the standard model, while pricier trims come with a 12.3-inch screen. The larger screen also comes with a remote touch controller, which gets a mixed response from critics and consumers.

You can also use voice controls on the bigger screen to avoid the controller altogether. Both systems are compatible with Apple and Android devices, as well as Amazon Alexa.

The Lexus RX models still come with an impressive number of safety features, including blind-spot monitoring with rear-cross traffic assistance. The pre-collision warning system can detect both preceding pedestrians and bicyclists, even in dimly lit conditions. Drivers can also take advantage of dynamic radar cruise control, road sign recognition, and lane-keeping assist.

You can also get optional fog lights on both Lexus RX SUVs for 2022. Automatic high beams come standard, and higher trims can have adaptive headlights.

2 new paint colors

The Lexus RX 350L and 450 HL are now available in Cloudburst Gray, a lighter version of the Nebula Gray Pearl option. Iridium has also been introduced for 2022, a glossy sheen similar to the Eminent White Pearl shade. These two models can also come with the Black Line package, but quantities are limited.

How much will each new Lexus RX cost?

Lexus hasn’t revealed pricing for the all-new RX models yet. Currently, the RX 350 starts at $45,220, and the hybrid 450 retails for $47,920. Edmunds predicts the new RX 350 will cost around $55,000, with a release date this fall.

You’re probably thinking a new safety feature and two new paint colors are pretty weak updates. We speculate that Lexus is holding many more impressive features back for the next-gen RX models. We might see additional powertrain and technology upgrades when these are released for the 2023 model year.

Oh, Tesla Cybertruck. Like fully autonomous vehicles, for a car that feels like it will never actually come out, we sure do talk about it a lot. At least in the most recent Cybertruck news, Elon Musk gives us a real reason why the fabled moon buggy won’t be coming out anytime soon. Apparently, if the Cybertruck were to come out now, Elon Musk says they would have to cost at least $1 million each.

Tesla Cybertruck | Tesla

Why isn’t the Tesla Cybertruck out yet?

According to Yahoo News, Tesla is putting the semi-truck and Cybertruck on hold for the time being. The semi is being pushed back to 2022. However, the Cybertruck is pushed back for what feels like indefinitely, or at least until Tesla can get the Tesla Model Y production up to speed at the Texas gigafactory.

The Model Y production needs to get underway first because the Tesla pickup truck is also meant to be produced in the same factory in Texas. Simply because the Model Y takes priority, Tesla is pushing the Cybertruck back until the time is right – whenever that may be. Also, due to parts shortages, building it too early would make it impossibly expensive.

Maybe waiting for the Cybertruck isn’t such a bad idea

Elon Musk says that technically, Tesla could start building the Cybertruck now, but if they were to rush it and do it now, the highly anticipated future truck would have to cost 1 million dollars each. The reason being, it and the Tesla semi-truck are going to be based on the next-generation 4680 battery pack. The new Model Y is also meant to use the battery pack, but for the time being, it can use the backup plan, which is the packs currently used in the California and China plants.

The 4680 battery pack is the future of Tesla, but it isn’t finished yet. Apparently, these bigger vehicles are “heavy users of cell capacity,” says Musk, so they won’t be financially viable options until the supply is strong and steady. As a result, Musk said if Tesla started building the Cybertruck in small batches, the space-age electric pickup truck could cost “$1 million apiece.” For once, a Cybertruck delay is much appreciated.

What’s the plan for the Cybertruck?

Tesla was originally planning for its pickup to come out sometime toward the end of 2021. That seems difficult to pull off at this point. Tesla has to finish the Texas plant and begin production of the Tesla Model Y before starting Cybertruck production. As of now, Tesla has not changed the Cybertruck’s release date.

The Tesla Cybertruck also is not exactly the world’s simplest vehicle. Over the years, Elon Musk has mentioned a laundry list of sci-fi/complicated features like being bulletproof, crab-walk mode, blinding speeds, and biometric reading to open the handleless doors. Normal new car production has kinks that need working out, but this is far from any “normal” car production.

More than any other upcoming car, the Cybertruck seems like the most complicated and unlikely to be made with any kind of quickness. As with any other Elon Musk futuristic plans, we will just have to wait and see what happens.
