General Motors filed a lawsuit against Ford for using the word “cruise” in BlueCruise. GM has both “Super Cruise” and its subsidiary Cruise trademarked. If you’re not familiar with GM’s Cruise you’re not alone. Cruise is GM’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary it acquired in 2016.

What is BlueCruise, Super Cruise, and Cruise?

Super Cruise is GM’s hands-free feature used in the 2021 Cadillac Escalade. It will be available in the GMC Hummer and Sierra, Chevy Silverado pickups, and other models in the near future. Ford introduced its BlueCruise hands-free driving feature in April.

Apparently, GM, Cruise, and Ford have been “engaged in protracted discussions” over the BlueCruise name. GM says that BlueCruise is too close to both Cruise and Super Cruise trademarks. GM has been using the Super Cruise name since its release in 2017 Cadillacs but has referenced the name since 2012.

“Ford’s decision to rebrand by using a core mark used by GM and Cruise will inevitably cause confusion between the parties, the affiliation, connection, or association between them, and/or origin, sponsorship, or approval of their goods and services,” states the lawsuit. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California is where the lawsuit was filed.

“BlueCruise was chosen for the Blue Oval’s next evolution of Ford’s Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control”

“We think GM Cruise’s claim is meritless and frivolous,” Ford says in a statement to The Hill. “Drivers for decades have understood what cruise control is. Every automaker offers it, and ‘cruise’ is common shorthand for the capability. That’s why BlueCruise was chosen as the name for the Blue Oval’s next evolution of Ford’s Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control. It incorporates hands-free Blue Zones and other advanced cruise-control features.”

Ford’s statement went on to say that GM has never found a problem with other companies using cruise in their trademarks and driving systems. The lawsuit says that “Ford insisted on using the ‘BlueCruise’ name despite Cruise’s preexisting rights.”

GM wants Ford to stop using BlueCruise, and mmonetary damages

Besides wanting Ford to stop using the BlueCruise name, it is asking for monetary damages. “While GM had hoped to resolve the trademark infringement matter with Ford amicably, we were left with no choice but to vigorously defend our brands and protect the equity our products and technology have earned over several years in the market,” GM said according to Reuters.

Interestingly, doing a US Patent and Trademark search for “BlueCruise” turns up nothing. It seems odd that Ford wouldn’t have trademarked the word before it was released. Maybe because it is a made-up compound word Ford didn’t feel it needed to trademark it? It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

It’s pretty exciting to see the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 racing around the terrain. However, it goes so fast. You could miss it if you blink. Also, going too fast in the Jeep Wnralger Rubicon 392 can be a problem.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 faces a speed problem

2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 | Jeep

If you require a Jeep and the need for speed, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 might be your perfect match. This beast has a 6.4-liter V8 engine that generates 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

According to Motor Authority, the Rubicon 392 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds. It also has a quarter-mile time of about 13.0 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 99 mph due to its tires.

The Rubicon 391 features an 8-speed automatic transmission and Jeep’s full-time Selec Trac four-wheel-drive system with a 2-speed transfer case. This Wrangler is built for speed, but it’s also a Rubicon. Meaning it’s also built for extreme off-roading. But it can be too fast for going over some surfaces.

How does the Wrangler Rubicon 392 perform?

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is well equipped to go over any surface. But the OFF-ROAD+ button should be engaged during low-speed activities. It helps to modulate the throttle, shift points, transmission, and traction control. It’s a pretty intelligent system that quickly detects what type of off-roading you’re up to over various terrain.

But without the button activated, climbing over loose surfaces and obstacles can become a challenge. It requires more skill than expected, and the tires can start slipping. Basically, it can make it difficult to control power output to the tires for adequate control.

The OFF-ROAD+ button limits wheel slip but restricting the throttle and adjusting the tractional control. In both 4Hi or 4Lo settings, it allows the Wrangler to easily climb up sandy hills with loose gravel.

Also, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 provides an excellent performance over loose surfaces and flat ground. It feels like it has enough power to quickly race across the desert. The suspension absorbs impacts well, allowing you to keep on going without any issues.

How is the Rubicon 391 built for off-roading?

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 has a 44.5-degree approach angle and a 37-degree departure angle. This beats the standard Rubicon by about 0.6 and 0.5 degrees. However, it doesn’t have a short ground clearance of about half an inch. It sits at 10.3-inches.

It sits on 17-inch aluminum wheels that are wrapped in 33-inch 285.70R17 BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires and Fox shocks. It has stiffer front frame rails, upper control arms, and cast-iron knuckles to support the engine’s extra weight and prevent nose dives. Plus, it has a front and rear stabilizer bar.

The Rubicon 392 starts at about $74,195. It also gets an EPA estimated 13 mpg in the city and up to 17 mpg on the highway. But listening to the mighty V8 roar and racing it across the desert might be worth more than the price.

The 2021 Toyota Sienna is already knocking it out of the park, with incredible cargo space, a comfortable cabin, and excellent features. But of all the innovations Toyota threw into their minivan, this one may be the strangest. Rather than a traditional owner’s manual, the large book that comes in every new car, the 2021 Sienna will use the “Toyota Driver’s Companion.”

Meet Joya: your digital owner’s manual

Toyota Drivers Companion | Toyota

When people say “going paperless,” this isn’t exactly what they had in mind. Her name is Joya, and she’s your Toyota Driver’s Companion. With a personalized database of information, Joya is able to spit out all sorts of factoids about the 2021 Toyota Sienna. She knows how every feature works, such as the 360-degree bird’s eye camera. And she can show you all the nifty features you’d likely miss. In essence, she’s a virtual tour guide, allowing you to explore the cabin and interact with the van like never before.

And yes, we do mean a personalized database of info about your car, no just any 2021 Toyota Sienna. By using your car’s VIN number, Joya can link with your car in order to personally assist you. A key example highlighted by Toyota is the check engine light. A traditional owner’s manual would say “go to your local Toyota dealership.” And while an OBD2 code reader would tell you what the issue is, some of them are pretty expensive. But by simply asking Joya, she can tell you some of the reasons your check engine light might be on.

We’re not sure how limited her knowledge is yet, but as of right now she seems capable of answering all the important questions, including how she works.

Joya works with the 2021 Toyota Sienna?

She explains her basic functions better than I can, but I’ll provide some extra details. First of all, Toyota has gone down the path of voice commands rather than text for a more conversational feel. And, as mentioned, Google’s Dialogflow AI makes Joya sound more human, allowing for smooth communication between the car and the driver.

But that’s not all: I described Joya as a virtual tour guide for your car, but I wasn’t exaggerating. All throughout your 2021 Toyota Sienna there are “hotspots” where Joya will be able to provide info about the features of your car depending on where you are inside it. For example, there are many buttons with confusing functions. By bringing your phone near the dashboard, Joya will automatically assume you’re curious about said buttons. Move to the trunk, and Joya will present you information on the folding third-row seats and rear cargo.

It can provide other info as well, such as recommended tire pressure and the physical specs of your car. In other words, it does all the things an owner’s manual can do and more, with interactive videos and quizzes to help show you around.

This is only the beginning of digital owner’s manuals

While the 2021 Toyota Sienna is the first to get a digitized owner’s manual, it certainly won’t be the last. Toyota describes the system as a “pilot program,” testing the interface before including it with future models. And who’s to say how long it’ll take other automakers to jump on this innovative idea. Sure, it adds one more layer to the list of electrical things that could go wrong, and if your phone dies you’re SOL. But having all the car’s information at your fingertips sure beats flipping through a 300-page book.

All 2021 Sienna owners can download the Toyota app now to access their own Toyota Driver’s Companion. And while this may be the beginning of the AI uprising, for now, it’s nice to have this helpful digital assistant on our side. Just remember to say thank you.

As hybrid vehicles’ popularity grows, you might wonder which one is right for you. Thankfully, myriad best-of lists can give you an idea. One such list is Good Housekeeping’s “The Best Hybrid Vehicles of 2021.” And the 2021 BMW 530e, part of the German automaker’s 5 Series, has some tough competition from other hybrids. But it isn’t hard to see why this sporty luxury car took home GH’s award for the best hybrid luxury sedan of the year.

Good Housekeeping’s picks for the best hybrids of 2021

2021 BMW 530e | BMW Group

Good Housekeeping recently released its choices for the best hybrid vehicles of 2021 in eight categories. They ranged from the best family-friendly hybrid (Honda Accord Hybrid) to the best hybrid luxury SUV plug-in (Audi Q5). Other categories were the best hybrid minivan (Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid), the best hybrid sedan (Hyundai Sonata Hybrid), and the best hybrid luxury sedan (BMW 530e). There was also the best hybrid compact crossover (Kia Niro), the best hybrid SUV (Honda CR-V Hybrid), and the best hybrid SUV plug-in (Ford Escape Hybrid Plug-In).

About the 2021 BMW 530e, the top hybrid luxury sedan

The 2021 BMW 530e boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a new XtraBoost feature, together producing 288 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. One of the 530e’s standout features is that you can opt for an electric-only mode for short trips around town with a battery range of about 20 miles, Good Housekeeping’s testers report. They were also impressed with the EPA-estimated fuel economy of 64 MPGe and gas-only 26 mpg.

Other reasons the BMW 530e won: It’s quick, luxurious, and everything you’d expect from a BMW hybrid. GH’s testers also praised the car for its smooth transition from the gas engine to the electric motor for an overall comfortable yet fun ride. In fact, the testers said they were sad to give the keys back.

Plus, the federal tax credit makes the 530e cheaper than the gas-only model. However, some safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, are not standard, so you have to pay for packages to get these options.

How Good Housekeeping picked the BMW 530e and other winners

The folks at Good Housekeeping took several factors into account when choosing the best hybrid vehicles. They looked at battery efficiency and fuel efficiency, intuitiveness of eco-related dashboard metrics, warranty coverage, and sticker price. For plug-in hybrids, they also evaluated driving range and ease of recharging.

In addition to evaluating the price compared to a gas engine, they also compared the MSRP with other features to determine if the car offers an overall good value for the price. After narrowing the field, they collaborated with Car and Driver experts to evaluate performance and other aspects.

Choosing a hybrid vehicle can be overwhelming, particularly as more automakers produce these models. But if you’re looking for a sporty and luxurious hybrid sedan, the 2021 BMW 530e is an excellent choice. In fact, it might be the only luxury hybrid sedan that also drives like a sports car. It’s easy to see why Good Housekeeping chose it as a winner. Plus, with the tax credit, it’s actually cheaper than its gas-only counterpart. Win-win.
