While many industries are on the road to recovery after last year’s pandemic, the automotive sector is still struggling to return to normalcy. The semiconductor chip shortage continues to affect many automakers, including General Motors. In fact, GM halted midsize SUV production to complete 30,000 pickup trucks.

So, what’s happening with the ongoing chip shortage, and how are GM and other auto manufacturers handling the situation?

What’s the big deal with the semiconductor chip shortage?

The COVID-19 pandemic caused a semiconductor chip shortage for many businesses trying to produce products. The automotive industry stands to lose approximately $110 billion because it relies on these electronic chips for several parts of the vehicles they’ve planned to build.

As for how long it will take to get back to normal, it doesn’t appear to be anytime soon. The United States relies on countries like China and Japan for semiconductor chips even though the technology was actually invented in America.

The countries that are building these products have seen a slowdown in production because of the safety measures in response to coronavirus infections. The slowdown means it takes longer to fill orders from automakers and other businesses needing these chips.

How the chip shortage has affected GM

Like many other automakers, GM is struggling to get its hands on enough chips to produce all the vehicles it originally planned to produce this year. However, the car company shifted some of its production to meet its projected goals for producing and delivering 30,000 Colorado and Canyon midsize pickups, Detroit Free Press reported.

But to accomplish that goal, General Motors had to halt production at four of its North American plants, which produce midsize SUVs. A GM plant worker reported that the facility has tens of thousands of SUVs parked and waiting for semiconductor chips to complete production.

General Motors used up its chip stock to push its midsize pickups through to completion. Once the two-week hiatus is up, the four North American plants are due to reopen and begin production once again. To help stock dealership lots, GM is also producing vehicles without certain parts, such as wireless phone chargers, and lowering the asking price.

Are any automakers immune to the chip shortage?

Despite GM’s and other car manufacturers’ troubles, two automakers appear to be unaffected by the chip shortage. Hyundai is one of them. In fact, its sales in May 2021 were 56 percent higher than the previous May.

So how has Hyundai avoided the same problems as other brands? Some critics speculate that the automaker foresaw the shortage in plenty of time and began stockpiling chips. But it’s likelier that the company analyzed its sales charts, saw which models were the most popular, and focused its production on them while putting less popular vehicles on a backburner.

The other automaker that doesn’t seem to be affected is Tesla. Elon Musk’s EV maker sidestepped the problem by devising a different solution.

Instead of using chips, the company uses a different type of tech that allows Tesla to deliver over-the-air updates. This will likely save the company and Tesla owners quite a bit of money in the long run.

The chip shortage isn’t likely to let up this year, but automakers are doing their best to keep production going. As U.S. officials look for other sources for these chips, we can expect continued delays in getting some newer vehicles to showroom floors.

The U.S. government incentivizes electric vehicle purchases. EV ownership is a lot easier thanks to tax credits that can save drivers a lot of money on their new vehicles. These EV tax credits can reduce purchase prices by thousands of dollars, potentially making your vehicle of interest much more affordable. But what vehicles are applicable for these huge discounts?

The federal government knew it had to do something to convince more consumers to purchase electric vehicles. In 2010 the government decided to award tax credits to new electric vehicle owners after their purchase. This way, more consumers would be inclined to purchase EVs, and the switch from gas-powered to electric vehicles would be easier. After all, folks should make the switch if there’s a financial incentive and an industry push toward EVs, right?

The government made a great choice because EV sales are starting to hit record highs. It took a while, but the electric vehicles offered by automakers were minimal until recently. Today it seems that most automakers are at least offering hybrid powertrain options. Ford has recently released the Ford Mustang Mach-E, proving that electric vehicles don’t have to be a compromise. What makes the EV tax credits so great is they apply to the majority, if not all EVs.

The tax credit is a reduction of your tax bill according to Internal Revenue Code Section 30D. This Internal Revenue Code ensures that any taxpayer who purchases a qualifying EV that tax year will receive a bill reduction that can amount to $7,500 in some states. To put this number into perspective, that’s like writing off over 0.18% of the total MSRP of a new Tesla Model 3. It can amount to great savings. According to Road Show by CNET, this tax credit could even rise to $12,500 soon.

Can a tax credit increase my refund?

Tax credits differ from tax deductions. Tax credits can increase the money you are refunded and reduce the money that you owe to the IRS that year. So yes, an electric vehicle tax credit can potentially increase your annual tax refund. This can be viewed in two ways.

You can check your EV of interest’s eligibility and consider the price reduced if it is eligible. Another way to look at it is, you’re paying the full price for your EV, and your Uncle Sam will pat you on the back for doing the right thing around tax time. Either way, electric vehicles are more affordable than ever before, and automakers like Tesla are looking to drop prices even lower.

Is there a tax credit for buying a Tesla in 2021?

There are certainly tax credits for buying Tesla models this year. In fact, many new Teslas are among the EVs that qualify for the $7,500 tax credit. Tesla hasn’t always provided affordable entry-level models to consumers. Its first vehicles were expensive luxury vehicles. Today Tesla’s best-sellers, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, have average new vehicle prices.

The tax credit is definitely a factor in Tesla’s rising popularity. As the Palo Alto, California-based automaker produces more affordable vehicles, Tesla will become accessible to most average consumers thanks to tax credits. The Biden administration and the U.S. government are trying to give potential EV owners the sweetest deals possible.

The answer to the question of which Toyota SUV is the largest might seem a little more tricky than meets the eye. There are three Toyota SUV models that offer three rows and seating for up to eight people and plenty of cargo space. But between the Toyota Highlander, Toyota Sequoia, and Toyota Land Cruiser, which is the biggest Toyota SUV?

Is the Toyota Sequoia the largest in the lineup?

Of all of three of these eight passenger SUV models, the Toyota Sequoia is the largest. Although it slots below the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Sequoia actually measures longer, wider, and taller than its luxury sibling. In both price and luxury appointments, the Toyota Sequoia settles in between the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Toyota Highlander.

However, in terms of sheer size, the Sequoia is aptly named after the largest tree in the world. It’s a hulking family-sized SUV that competes with other giants like the Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Suburban. Of all the Toyota SUVs, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia is the largest.

How much bigger is the Sequoia than the Toyota Land Cruiser?

The differences between the Toyota Sequoia and the Toyota Land Cruiser really come down to two categories. Firstly, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is considered Toyota’s luxury SUV with its luxurious interior, akin to what we see in a Lexus SUV. Then, there’s the matter of size.

So how much bigger is the Sequoia than the Toyota Land Cruiser? According to U.S. News and World Report, the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is on a 112.2 inch wheelbase while the 2021 Toyota Sequoia is on a wheelbase of 122 inches. The 2021 Toyota Sequoia is also more than 10 inches longer than the Land Cruiser’s 194.9 inch length.

Additionally, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia is also 77 inches tall, with the Land Cruiser measuring in at 74 inches. These differences in size account for more legroom and headroom in all three rows of the Sequoia SUV. Plus, while the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser offers 16.1 cubic feet of rear cargo volume beyond the third row the Sequoia provides 18.9 cubic feet of space for gear in the rear cargo.

Do the Land Cruiser and Sequoia have the same engine?

These two Toyota SUV models do have one major feature that’s the same. Each one runs on the same 346 hp 5.7 liter V8 engine. Despite their size differences, both SUVs have the same EPA estimate of 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

The Toyota Highlander is Toyota’s smallest SUV that seats up to 8 passengers

The Toyota 4Runner offers a third row in some trim levels. However, it’s similar to the Lexus GX third row setup and accommodates up to seven passengers. On the other hand, the 2021 Toyota Highlander offers seating for up to eight passengers. But how much smaller is it than the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser and the 2021 Toyota Sequoia SUV models?

It’s actually strikingly similar to the Land Cruiser in this area, with a matching wheelbase of 112.2 and overall length of 194.9. That said, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is about 6 inches shorter at 68.1 inches tall. The Highlander’s rear cargo volume of 16 cubic feet is also highly comparable to the Land Cruiser.

However, the 2021 Toyota Highlander has more engine options. While you can’t get one with the V8 engine, there are both a hybrid powertrain option and a 211 hp 3.5 liter V6 engine.

What is the biggest Toyota SUV?

While the 2021 Toyota Highlander and the Land Cruiser also offer up to eight seats, the 2021 Toyota Sequoia is the largest SUV in Toyota’s lineup. For anyone that needs a lot of space and is wondering what is the biggest Toyota SUV, the Sequoia is likely to spark interest as the most spacious in the lineup.

The Koenigsegg Jesko is designed to do one thing: get a (rich) person from Point A, around some corners, and back to Point A as fast as humanly possible. Basically, it’s like climbing into Bullet Bill, pressing “B”, and sending your happy ass off into the horizon. Or firing yourself out of a $3,000,000 cannon. Or jumping out of a plane. Actually, that last one is too slow. You will go faster in a Jesko. But what in the hell is it?

The Koenigsegg Jesko is a spaceship

Look at this. Does this look normal? | Koenigsegg

Forget the whole “it’s a spaceship with wheels” trope we journalists love so much. The Jesko is a spaceship, wheels and all. Moreover, the Koenigsegg Jesko is a hypercar built like a spaceship. There’s a little airbase in Angelholm, Sweden. Outside, a small sign that says “Koenigsegg” on it. In it are pristine white floors and more tech than SpaceX. Honestly, if you drove by you wouldn’t ever know what kind of full-moon, mad-scientist lunacy is going on inside.

That’s where the Swedish company is based, and where their very, very exclusive line of cars is built. Now mind you, Koenigsegg is a 27-year-old company that hasn’t built a sub-million dollar car in recent memory. Thankfully, their cars perform like it, and the Jesko is no exception. Frankly, the thing looks so absurd I wouldn’t even care about the power figures (1,578 hp and 1,1076 lb-ft) but they’re impressive nonetheless.

Would Sir or Madam like more?

The vehicle you see in the first photo is the “normal” (if that word even applies) Jesko. Designed to be “the leading track-focused, road-legal car for those looking for the ultimate in vehicle performance.” So, the first version of the Koenigsegg is for all-out circuit dominance. This is the Jesko Absolut. If you can’t tell from the more sleek profile and stunning super-slippery wheels, this one is about a little more… well, more.

The Jesko Absolut, named for founder Christian von Koenigsegg’s father, is the real Bullet Bill, Star Power recipe from the Swedish brand. Per their website, the Absolut is to be the fastest Koenigsegg ever. I should point out that the brand has held multiple top speed records in the past. In Absolut spec, the Jesko will make a “minimum 1600 hp.” How’s that for more?

Christian Von Koenigsegg is a genius

It should be noted that the Absolut has not completed a top-speed run yet. But if we’re going just off looks, I’d say that either the “regular” Jesko or the Absolut are about the fastest things this side of wings. That’s all thanks to founder Christian von Koenigsegg. Frankly, I could write a whole book on the technology he’s created. In summary, the man is brilliant and customers pay a premium for that. Read “premium” as millions. And “that” meaning launched off into the horizon faster than you can read this. Sounds fun, right?
