Vehicles don’t change much from year to year. But every few years, automakers significantly refresh major components of each model and engage in a major marketing push. Refreshes don’t always land well. Automakers can miss what consumers want. But sometimes, refreshes result in substantially improved vehicles that provide great value for consumers and profits for their manufacturers. The 2021 Nissan Rogue is the perfect example of when a refresh goes right.

Last year’s Nissan Rogue

2021 Nissan Rogue | Nissan Motor Corporation

To understand what the new Rogue gets right, one should start with what the Rogue looked like in years prior. The 2020 Nissan Rogue is an affordable SUV that looks great, but its powertrain fails to impress. According to Car and Driver, it comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that only puts out 170 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque.

Sitting on 17-inch wheels, the Rogue’s steering isn’t the most responsive, and both the engine and transmission are noisy. But the fuel economy is decent at 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for the front-wheel-drive version and 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway for the all-wheel drive version. It also tows just 1,100 pounds, which is 400 pounds less than competing vehicles like the Honda CR-V or Subaru Forester.

The base model S 2020 Rogue, does have a few things going for it. It’s got 70 cubic feet of cargo space with the second row down and 39.3 cubic feet when it’s up. There’s also plenty of legroom with 43 inches in the front and 37.9 in the back. There’s also a reconfigurable cargo area and cubby below the floor of the hold.

But the interior materials feel a bit lackluster, even for an affordable SUV. Entertainment and other controls can be manipulated via a 7-inch touchscreen system compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. You can listen to music with the standard four-speaker sound system. A rearview camera also comes standard but can optionally be upgraded to a surround-view system.

The higher-level trims also boast some amenities that enhance the 2020 model. The SV adds heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, a power-adjusted driver’s seat, and a six-speaker sound system, among other features. With the top-level SL, you’ll also get built-in navigation, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, and power adjustments for the passenger seat.

The 2021 Nissan Rogue refresh

According to Car and Driver, the new Rogue comes with a decisive exterior styling, a shorter wheelbase making it easier to maneuver, and a much-improved powertrain. The CVT automatic is now paired with a 2.5-liter I-4 engine that produces 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. Such a setup allows you to hit 60 mph in 8.1 seconds.

Though the cargo hold is about three cubic feet smaller, the total cargo space is up this year at 74.1 cubic feet, with the second row down. Legroom remains generous. And the cargo hold retains the extra cargo space under the hold floor from last year’s model. The interior material and styling represent a marked improvement, making this Rogue actually feel fresher than before.

The 2021 model also adds an inch to its touch screen, bringing it to 8 inches. Upgrades will bring you to 9-inches, and you can also opt for built-in navigation. Of course, higher trim levels bring added creature comforts. Rogue SV owners will get 18-inch alloy wheels, an eight-way power seat, and Nissan’s semi-autonomous tech package called ProPilot Assist. Pro Pilot Assist adds adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and traffic jam assistance to the many advanced safety features that already come standard.

With the Rogue SL another inch to added to the wheels, as well as leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone climate control, and a hands-free power liftgate. And the top-level Platinum trim provides you with a 10-speaker sound system, built-in navigation, leatherette upholstery, and roof rails, among other add-ons.

How does the new model compare?

The new Rogue is a significant improvement over models from the last few years. Despite the shorter wheelbase, the total cargo space is larger. And because of that shortened wheelbase, the 2021 model handles better. Further, the second-row doors have a wider range of motion, making it easier to get into and out of the car. And the CVT transmission helps the car transition more smoothly than the prior-year model.

The new engine is also an improvement, bringing its performance metrics in line with competitors like Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4. It’s more fuel-efficient than either, with more total cargo room. It does lose to the Honda CR-V in both fuel efficiency and total cargo volume, but not by much. However, the Rogue does boast a sharper interior and better infotainment system than the Honda model.

Unlike many model refreshes, Nissan nailed it with the new Nissan Rogue. If you’re looking for an affordable SUV, start looking at the 2021 model.

The 2021 Acura RDX is a compact luxury SUV that impresses consumers with its stylish interior and affordable price tag. Generating 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, the superb performance of its four-cylinder turbocharged engine stands out in a crowded segment.

The model’s upscale cabin interior is comfortable for drivers and passengers alike, but the lack of standard features is surprising for a luxury SUV of this caliber. Regardless, the 2021 Acura RDX still found a spot on this highly-respected industry list.

The 2021 Acura RDX is a luxurious SUV

The 2019 Acura RDX Advance SUV | Acura Newsroom

US News named the Acura RDX as one of the “Most Luxurious SUVs for 2021.” The 2021 Acura RDX received an interior score of 8.2 out of 10, with an overall score of 8.1 out of 10.

The use of high-quality materials and first-class styling in the cabin bears a resemblance to the sportier Acura NSX supercar. This focus on its interior design keeps this top-selling Acura at the top of the list for consumers looking for a reliable luxury SUV.

The vehicle interior is an integral part of how US News ranks models and assigns luxury ratings. The trusted auto reviewer evaluates passenger space, design, comfort, quality, cargo capacity, and available features when giving an interior score. They are quick to point out that “just because a certain SUV is bigger and more expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s more extravagant.”

What the Acura RDX is missing

The 2021 Acura RDX luxury SUV has a standard features list that holds it back a bit from the competition. The five-passenger RDX has adequate safety technology, but features such as blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert are optional. Most vehicles in this class include them as standard features.

The Acura RDX also misses the mark with its split-screen infotainment system. While the 10.2-inch display and connectivity apps are impressive, the True Touchpad controller is awkward to operate. Ultimately, the Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility pick up the slack.

Pricing and available configurations

Currently, in its third generation, Kelley Blue Book calls the RDX premium-compact SUV an “attractive combination of practicality, dependability, and athleticism with a comfortable ride and unmistakable value.”

The 2021 Acura RDX has an MSRP base price of $38,400 with the option of either a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive powertrain. The luxury SUV is also available in four configurations. The entry-level base model comes with faux leather upholstery, heated front seats, satellite radio, and the AcuraWatch safety system.

The Technology Package features pewter gray alloy wheels, a 12-speaker premium audio system, blind-spot monitoring with advanced safety features, and a leather-trimmed interior. The MSRP for the Technology Package model is $41,300.

The Acura RDX A-Spec Package has an MSRP of $44,300 for FWD and $46,300 for AWD. In addition to the Technology Package, the A-Spec also includes 20-inch split-spoke wheels, exclusive design styling for the front and rear bumpers, and LED fog lights. Additionally, a black grille with A-spec badging gives this RDX a high-end feel. Elsewhere, the ventilated and heated seating adds premium comfort for the driver and passengers.

The 2021 Acura RDX Advance Package ranges between $46,200 and $48,200. It includes all the above-listed features, along with an adaptive damper system, premium windshield wipers, and a hands-free power-operated tailgate. The head-up display features an impressive 10.5-inch screen, and wood interior trim throughout accentuates the upscale interior. A surround-view camera and 16-speaker audio system nicely round out the Advanced Package.

Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is available for an additional $2,000 surcharge and is available on all trim levels.

Only 360 of the limited PMC edition Acura RDX models were made, with a starting price of $51,000. MotorTrend called the orange SUV “as bright as cheesy Cheetos and fun to drive.”

Getting involved in motocross and enduro motorcycles isn’t the only new initiative Triumph is bringing this year. So far, the British company has announced plans to develop an electric motorcycle. It’s also launched the 2022 Speed Triple RS, its most powerful three-cylinder bike yet. And now, Triumph is bringing in a new partner from outside the motorcycle world: Swiss watchmaker Breitling.

Triumph and Breitling are partnering up for some limited-edition motorcycles and watches

2020 Triumph Daytona Moto2 765 Limited Edition | Triumph

In the past, Triumph has released several limited-edition motorcycles on its own. The prize for the first-place 2021 Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride fundraiser, for example, was a one-off Thruxton RS. And there’s also the motosports-inspired Daytona 765 Moto2 Limited Edition sportbike.

A customized motorcycle, won’t be the only thing to come out of Triumph’s and Breitling’s new long-term partnership. Given that Breitling is a watchmaker, the two brands are also collaborating on a limited-edition timepiece. The Swiss company’s CEO Georges Kern says the watch and bike will feature “purposeful engineering paired with modern retro designs.” And when it comes to retro motorcycles, few do it quite like Triumph.

This won’t be the first motorcycle-inspired watch, Breitling or otherwise

While it might seem odd that a watchmaker like Breitling is teaming up with a motorcycle company, it really isn’t. Several high-end watch brands have established histories of collaborations with bike and car companies.

TAG Heuer, for example, has released several watches inspired by the Indy 500, where it’s served as the official timekeeper since 2004. Also, its Monaco watch became a style icon when Steve McQueen wore it in Le Mans. And it’s currently teaming up with Porsche to release a line of driver’s watches. Road & Track describes that partnership as “a ‘duh’ on paper,” seeing as both companies have models named ‘Carrera.’

Moving to the two-wheeled world, Swiss brand Tissot and German brand TW Steel are heavily involved in motorcycle racing, Cycle World reports. Both watchmakers have sponsored racers and released limited-edition models in their honor. Tissot also served as MotoGP’s official timekeeper. Plus, to mark the 60th anniversary of its first World Championship Grand Prix victory, Honda Racing partnered with Casio on a limited-edition chronograph, RideApart says.

As for Breitling, its partnership with Triumph isn’t the watchmaker’s first motoring team-up. It’s not even the Swiss company’s first motorcycle collab. In 2018 it produced several special-edition watches with British bike brand Norton, Cycle World notes. And Breitling timepieces have appeared in and been inspired by several modern Bentleys.

When can you buy these limited-edition bikes and watches?

As of this writing, neither Triumph nor Breitling has released any specific details about the limited-edition motorcycle or watch. However, it’s worth noting that Thruxton RS bikes are appearing in select Breitling boutiques as “inspiration.” So, that might be a clue as to the limited-edition bike’s ethos. And as for a potential price, the cheapest Breitling watch costs $3750, and the Thruxton RS starts at $16,200. In short, prepare your wallet.

But potential buyers won’t have to wait long to catch a glimpse. The companies plan on unveiling both the bike and the watch “sometime in early 2022,” RideApart reports. And if you miss your chance to snag either, the partnership might not wind down immediately. Though buyers might want to get in line soon—the clock’s ticking.

The Chevy Equinox is a midsize SUV that is an affordable alternative. It offers one of the best fuel economies in its class, and NerdWallet ranks it seventh on the list of cheapest cars to insure, making it one of the more affordable SUVs on the market. What makes this compact SUV so much cheaper to insure? Here are a few reasons why Equinox is ranked among the top 10 cheapest.

The Chevy Equinox’s safey ratings help lower insurance costs

2021 Chevrolet Equinox | General Motors

The Chevy Equinox safety ratings are one of the reasons that it is cheaper to insure. According to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Equinox scored well on the following safety tests: small overlap front for driver-side and passenger-side, moderate overlap front, the side, roof strength, head restraints, and seat. In addition, it also scored superior in front crash prevention vehicle to vehicle and front crash prevention vehicle to a pedestrian.

The Chevy Equinox would be an excellent option for a young family, given its safety ratings and general long-term affordability.

Insurance rates as a percentage of the MSRP

The Chevy Equinox has a starting MSRP of $23,800. The average annual insurance premium is $1,511. That is 6.35% of the MSRP. Various trim levels will affect the cost to insure, such as choosing the RS package, which is a sportier package, may raise the premium. Other factors that can affect that rate are the drivers on the policy and their driving histories, such as tickets, prior accidents, and other infractions.

Insurance companies will often look at the vehicle’s likelihood of being stolen when setting insurance premiums. For example, the Honda Accord and Honda Civic are both very highly rated by IIHS. However, they are more likely to be stolen than other vehicles, and the insurance rates reflect that.

Features of the Chevy Equinox

The Chevy Equinox is a middle-of-the-road type of vehicle. However, if you are looking for a slightly sportier version, the RS package could fit the bill. The RS part stands for “rally sport,” which basically means you get trim that makes it look sportier, such as a black interior with red stitching and a black grill on the exterior.

As for vehicle performance, you will get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine along with 227 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque compared to the base option of a 1.5-liter engine. In addition, both the 1.5-liter turbo and 2.0-liter turbo versions come with either FWD or AWD, making it a great option for those that deal with inclement weather from time to time.

Equinox pricing

The Chevy Equinox MSRP is $26,995 all the way up to $40,000, depending on the trim level you choose, Chevrolet shows. Features like AWD and convenience packages that include heated rear seats and an 8-way power front seat can drive up the cost of the vehicle. However, the LS version starts at a reasonable $26,995 and can go up from there, depending on your features.

The four levels of trim offered include the LS, LT, RS, and Premier, with the LS being the cheapest version and the Premier the most expensive. These four trim levels are customizable, and insurance premiums will vary based on the MSRP of your particular vehicle option you choose.

All in all, the Chevy Equinox is one of the least expensive cars to insure. Varying trim levels and convenience packages make it a nice option for customization. Combine this with Equinox’s good safety rating, and this makes it a great option for a family-friendly and inexpensive vehicle to own.
