When we think of a work truck, the image of an old beater often comes to mind. There’s nothing wrong with that if you only have some pocket change to offer, but some brand new trucks are perfect examples of a work pickup and aren’t that expensive. The Ram 1500 is one of them.

This pickup is a favorite of many critics. According to Forbes, they consider it one of the Best Full-Size Trucks for 2021, giving it their score of 90 points out of 100. Let’s take a look at what’s behind the Ram name and why it’s so great as a work truck.

What’s behind the Ram name?

As Forbes so succinctly put it, “The RAM brand might be only a decade old, but 100 years of experience goes into each truck it builds.” The Ram name for its lineup of pickups isn’t all that old, but it’s a name that came from a long line of Dodge vehicles. This automaker has been producing trucks since 1917, albeit under the Dodge name.

When Chrysler bought them out in 1928, vehicles were still produced under Dodge. We didn’t see the Ram name until the early 80s when the lite truck division picked up the Power Ram moniker. By 2009, the medium to heavy-duty trucks merged into the Ram name, which they’re still known as today.

According to Forbes, Chrysler merged with the Italian automaker, Fiat, saving it from bankruptcy in 2009. In 2014 all the restructuring had been accomplished, and the brand became known as Fiat Chrysler.

Why is the Ram 1500 such a good work truck?

The Ram 1500 is the lightest load in the pickup lineup, but it still has plenty to offer as far as a work truck goes. Power is one of the most important features a truck could have. According to MotorTrend, Ram 1500 gives you a total of four engine choices.

The standard unit is a 3.6-liter V6 motor, accompanied by a 48-volt mild-hybrid eTorque system, generating 305 hp. You can also choose a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, a 5.7-liter V8 that comes with or without eTorque, and a 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 engine. Each motor comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.  You can even add 4WD if you want.

The best engine option is the 3.0-liter turbodiesel, which gets you 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg when traveling on the highway for the rear-wheel-drive version. If you choose the 4WD option, you can expect 2-3 mpg less for both city and highway.

According to Forbes, the Ram 1500 has one of the best offerings for upscale interiors on the pickup market. This is one of the reasons why they listed it as the #1 Full-Size Truck for 2021. In fact, some of its critics named the 2020 model a Luxury Vehicle of the Year due to its high level of refinement.

How well will the Ram 1500 handle towing and payload?

The second and third most important features of a work truck are its towing and payload capacity. The Ram 1500 doesn’t disappoint with its light-duty pickup.

This truck has two beds to choose from. You can get either the 5-foot seven-inch or a 6-foot four-inch box. Payload capacity is about 2,300 lbs if you get the standard 3.6-liter engine. If you upgrade to the 5.7-liter V8, you will only get as much as 1,970 lbs.

MotorTrend recommends the RWD quad cab version with the long bed to achieve the best results for towing. If you stick with the standard motor, you can tow up to 7,730 lbs. Upgrading to the V8 with eTorque will increase it to 12,750 lbs.

The Ram 1500 is an overachiever when it comes to light-duty pickup. If you’re looking to get a dependable work truck, give the 1500 model a try and see what it can do for you.

The minivan segment may not be as big as, say, the crossover class, but it endures thanks to contenders like the Chrysler Pacifica. And for busy consumers who still need to haul their favorite people and things, minivans are the ideal vehicle. Some observers suggest the minivan is making a comeback. And today’s models also now come in hybrid versions, making them even more attractive.

You might love the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, a minivan that prevailed over its biggest rival in a recent contest. It’s an award that may have you rethinking how you view today’s minivans, too.

The Chrysler Pacifica is among the best hybrid vehicles of 2021

Good Housekeeping performed a rigorous evaluation of several vehicle segments, including minivans, for “The Best Hybrid Vehicles of 2021.” You probably recognize a few of the models, rising to the top of their respective classes, including the Honda CR-V Hybrid, Kia Niro, Honda Accord Hybrid, and Audi Q5. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, BMW 530e, and Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid also earned nods.

And the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid won in the hybrid minivan class, beating out its biggest rival, the fan-favorite Toyota Sienna.

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid impressed the Good Housekeeping team. And beating out the best-selling minivan, which according to Newsweek is the Toyota Sienna, is a big deal. The Sienna has sold 57,642 units this year, nearly 10,000 more than the Pacifica’s 47,571.

Why Good Housekeeping picked the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica

First, the GH team loves the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid’s spaciousness. You might as well have a house on wheels when you’re talking about the cavernous interior room.

This three-row, seven-passenger minivan offers either a traditional V6 engine or a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It’s been a top pick for GH now three years in a row. The EPA rates the PHEV Pacifica at 82 MPGe and the gas model at 30 mpg combined, making either configuration a good value.

Some of this minivan’s standout features include an updated infotainment system, complete with a 10-inch screen, Android and Apple pairing, and Alexa integration. The Stow ‘n Go third-row seating has been a Chrysler Pacifica favorite amenity, allowing for ample storage of a whopping 53 carry-on suitcases. I

Its biggest setback is its lackluster acceleration, though GH also wished some of the interior components felt a bit more upscale.

GH’s holistic approach to vehicle evaluation

The Good Housekeeping team evaluates vehicles rigorously, much like its sister publication, Car and Driver. GH’s testers include engineers who spend countless hours driving each vehicle. Evaluations rank driving dynamics, engine power, and handling in a variety of scenarios. The team also explores convenience and comfort extras, including storage solutions, ease of use tech, and legroom.

In addition, the reviewers dive deeper into other vehicle components, such as visual style and appeal. They consider the size of the mirrors and cup holder placement. And they remark on dashboard layout and child safety seat installation ease. All of these steps lend more credibility to the big win for this year’s Chrysler Pacifica.

If you consider yourself a minivan person, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is worth a serious look. It beat out the other minivan contenders for this latest award from Good Housekeeping. And it may win out with you and your family too.

You certainly didn’t ask for it, but here we are anyways. Two orthodox cars with unorthodox propulsion systems, one based on an highly advanced electric car, the other based on a Volkswagen Beetle. Both were created by geniuses, or madmen depending on who you ask. And while both a rocket powered Tesla Roadster and a Jet Powered Volkswagen Beetle sound utterly absurd, they’re not cut from the same cloth.

The rocket powered Tesla Roadster is Elon’s ultimate speed machine

Let’s get this out of the way: Tesla claims the rocket-Roadster will do 0-60 in 1.1 seconds, making it the second Tesla with a sub two-second time. A record and bone shattering speed, but the engineering behind it may be more impressive.

The rockets used will be direct from SpaceX, but they’re not actually rockets. This is an electric vehicle, there’s no gas (and no room for gas). That’s why the rockets used are “cold-gas thrusters,” ridiculously pressurized air that’ll spew out the back and blast the car forward.

It’s a calculated, data driven beast of engineering, but there are some concerns. The legality and safety of such speeds is highly questionable. The G-force one would experience accelerating from 0-60 in just over a second could injure or even kill unprepared occupants. Elon even tweeted that experiencing the sensation would be “not wise for those with a medical condition.”

And law enforcement wouldn’t be fond of an on-road rocket ship (especially one that conceals the license plate with the boosters active). However, it wouldn’t be the first time an officer pulled over a rocket powered car.

That’s the key difference between the Tesla and the Beetle: one will be assembled on the factory floor by literal rocket scientists, the other was built in a garage by a guy named Ron. Granted, Ron Patrick does have a PhD in mechanical engineering from Stanford University, so if there was anyone to assemble such a machine, it’d be him.

Built in the early 2000s, Ron wanted to strap a rocket to a car. Obviously it’s no simple task, but the reasoning behind it was. The engine itself is a General Electric T58-8F, found on high-powered helicopters. It’s fueled by kerosene and is rated at an insane 1,350 horsepower. Idle is 13,000rpm, and it can spin up to 26,000rpm.

And the best part: it’s street legal. Ron has been pulled over by confused officers many times as they try to pin him with some fee for driving a rocket powered car in California. In fact, the reason this car is street legal is because there were no laws against putting a rocket on the back of your car, as long as you didn’t modify the original engine (which he didn’t).

The beauty of this car lies not in the power or speed, but in how ridiculous it is. Ron explains on his website “the car was built to thrill me, not kill me,” which is part of the reason we don’t know just how fast it is. No 0-60 or top speed tests were ever performed, and they likely never will be. But it’ll always be a big middle finger to bureaucracy, and gave Ron many laughs throughout his ownership. And he added charm of the jet-beetle fetched a high price when Ron decided to sell his creation.

The Beetle might be worth more than the Tesla

In December of 2020, Ron listed the car on Craigslist. After all, where else would you buy a jet-powered beetle? It sold for $550,000, and came with written instructions on how to operate it. And while the ad is long gone, some of those instructions can be found on Motortrend. We’re not certain who it went to, but we are certain they’re having a good laugh about it.

Then there’s the Tesla Roadster. The total price, including reservation fees, has been set to $250,000, less than half of the Beetles. Granted, this is for the base model, not the SpaceX package. But even still, it’s said to get up to 60 in just 1.9 seconds, and has a claimed range of 620 miles. It’s a record breaking supercar no doubt, but there’s just something about the Beetle.

It’s rudimentary, it’s strange, and it certainly shouldn’t be street legal. Where the Tesla Roadster will be a production car first and a rocket ship second, the Beetle was destined to be a rocket from the moment Ron bought it. It’s one of a kind. It’s special. That leaves just one unanswered question: if you’re playing punch-buggy, how many punches is the jet-Beetle worth?

People have been modifying Triumph motorcycles to be desert sleds for years. To make these bikes more dual-sport-like, usually requires knobby tires, high fenders, and scrambler exhaust. After all these many long years, Triumph has finally made the shocking announcement that it is starting to build motocross and enduro motorcycles

Triumph rolls up its sleeves and gets dirty

According to Cycle World, Triumph has just moved into its most dramatic undertaking since John Bloor brought the British icon back from the brink of doom more than 30 years ago. For over 120 years, Triumph has been one of the most important names in motorcycles. That whole time it really only made bikes for the road (even if most of them were dirt in 1902).

This announcement means a whole slew of new Triumph machines is on the way. This is very exciting news for any Triumph or off-road riding fans. If the prospect of off-road Triumphs isn’t exciting enough on its own, Triumph has been clever and brought on two of the most famous off-road riders of all time to help develop the new bikes; Ricky Carmichael and Iván Cervantes.

What exactly does the Brits have planned for these enduro and motocross bikes?

Triumph has kept most details surrounding this new venture pretty close to the vest as one could expect. ALl the British bike makers have said so far is that “development is well underway on a comprehensive range of all-new motocross and enduro motorcycles.” That’s that good word.

Although Triumph has yet to provide any details on what these bikes are going to look like, how they will perform, or anything else, for that matter, we should be catching some details over the coming months.

Moving off-road is a strong choice for any motorcycle maker

We have seen a massive push to off-highway vehicles (OHV) since the onset of COVID-19 in March of 2020. As the travel, restaurant, and event marketplaces shut down, consumers started to put their money in off-road vehicles of all kinds.

The RV market positively exploded in what felt like overnight. The other market that shot into the stratosphere is OHVs like dirt bikes, adventure bikes, ATVs, four-wheelers, and side-by-sides. Since everything indoors was shut, the outdoors were ripe for the picking.

For Triumph to jump onboard at this time, after years of Triumphs, riders converting their street bikes into something closer to a BMW adventure- or Dakar-style bike makes perfect sense.

The numbers are hard to ignore here. According to Cycle World, Motorcycle Industry Council figures show that in 2020, despite—or perhaps due to—the coronavirus pandemic, off-highway motorcycle sales rose 46.5 percent compared to 2019, and the trajectory has continued into 2021, with first-quarter off-highway sales up a further 45.4 percent.

The off-road motorcycle world will see a bunch of new, totally new models, which it is hungry for. With major makers like Harley-Davidson and now Triumph digging into the dirt stuff, the marketplace should get stronger and more competitive. Hell, with Triumph in the game, the off-road bikes should at least get a little more classy.
