Have you ever wanted to see a Tesla take on a tornado, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz? Okay, maybe you haven’t thought, “I’d really love to see a Tesla in a Tornado,” but knowing that it’s happened – and there’s video! – makes it a must-see. Of course, it helps that the Tesla owner is okay, otherwise, it might be a different story.

2021 Tesla Model X | Tesla

Where was the tornado?

Tesla versus the tornado (there’s a movie title here somewhere) happened in Canada, specifically Ontario, on July 15, 2021. According to Yahoo News, the tornado was a 2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. It did touch down near businesses in Barrie, Ontario – and of course near the Tesla.

Altogether, it was a pretty serious tornado. According to CP24, 100 people were displaced and 20 homes are uninhabitable because of the tornado. Additionally, ten people were taken to the hospital.

What happened between the Tesla and the Tornado?

It was a Tesla Model X involved in the tornado. According to the video owner on Reddit, the Tesla driver was safe inside a business when the tornado touched down. The video footage shows what it was like inside of the tornado, without having to risk anybody’s life.

In the video, heavy wind is visible thanks to the debris it’s carrying with it. There’s rain falling pretty heavily as well. You can see the rear of another SUV parked nearby pushed toward the Tesla Model X. Traffic cones are also seen being thrown by the wind through the parking lot.

Is there video footage?

Teslas are filled with cameras – they have cameras pointing inside, outside, and replacing sensors that were previously operated by radar and lidar. So of course there’s video footage of the tornado.

It was the driver’s side camera that captured the footage of the tornado, and it’s pretty unbelievable to see, like a real-life (and therefore more terrifying) version of the movie Twister.

The Tesla owner goes by Vanilla Gorilla on Reddit. They wrote, “The paint is pretty scuffed up pretty bad and a few dents, but it survived pretty well compared to other cars in the parking lot.”

Not only is there a video, but there are also pictures of the tornado damage after the fact. Vanilla Gorilla shared these, and they show how the Tesla survived the tornado. There are scuff marks all over the Model X’s body, and the side mirror was essentially ripped off. It’s pretty clear that the Tesla must have been hit by a good number of things during the tornado. From the look of things, it will likely need a full paint job.

Seeing what the inside of the tornado is like is pretty wild, and kind of cool. Considering there were a total of five tornados in the area on the day of this tornado, it’s also pretty lucky that no one was more seriously injured. Hopefully the Tesla owner will be able to get their car good as new soon.

Hybrid cars are a great option for drivers who aren’t comfortable enough (or financially prepared) to make the switch to all-electric driving. Plug-in hybrids are typically more expensive than hybrids, but they also have a decent electric range for short commutes. Models like the Audi Q5 PHEV are also still as enjoyable to drive as their gas-powered counterparts.

Good Housekeeping compiled a list of the impressive hybrids in “The Best Hybrid Vehicles of 2021.” The Honda CR-V Hybrid justifiably won Best Hybrid SUV, while the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid took Best Hybrid Sedan. And the Audi Q5 won Best Luxury SUV Plug-in despite one frustrating flaw.

Perks of owning an Audi Q5 PHEV

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV comes with a 248-hp turbo-four paired and a 141-hp electric motor. That’s a total of 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Good Housekeeping also appreciated that it comes with standard all-wheel drive.

According to Audi, the Q5 PHEV can reach 60 mph in a clean 5.0 seconds. In EV mode, the Q5 PHEV gets 19 miles of electric range. The vehicle defaults to EV mode on startup when fully charged, encouraging drivers to save gas. When using the gas engine, the Q5 PHEV gets 27 mpg combined city/highway.

However, it’s easy to switch between Normal and EV modes when necessary. Good Housekeeping also says the ride is quiet in both drive modes, especially EV. With a 240-volt charger, Audi promises the battery can charge in just 2.4 hours.

The Audi Q5 PHEV also has quick and responsive handling, even with a heavy battery pack. GH adds that the battery pack doesn’t detract from the vehicle’s cargo area, which totals 53.5 cubic feet. And 26 cubic feet of luggage space can be utilized with the rear seats upright.

The Q5 seats five riders on standard leather upholstery with heated seats included. Riders of all heights should feel comfortable in the backseat, and the wide door openings allow for easy access. Every Audi Q5 PHEV also comes with a standard ambient lighting package.

Good Housekeeping liked the updated infotainment system, operated through a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Drivers can also opt for Audi Virtual Cockpit, which comes with a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. This feature offers extra drive modes and displays a 3D map for the navigation system.

The Audi Q5’s minor annoyances

While the Audi Q5 PHEV’s powertrain runs smoothly overall, there’s a noticeable jolt while switching to gas power. GH engineers reported that the car acted as if the accelerator had been slammed for a brief moment. Otherwise, they had no complaints with this vehicle.

GH also consulted with Car and Driver before determining a vehicle’s final placement on this list. During C/D’s test drive, reveiwers reported that the standard adjustment options on the front seats didn’t provide much comfort. C/D still gave the Audi Q5 PHEV high praise in terms of handling, especially its cornering abilities.

The experts at TrueCar were also mostly pleased with the Q5 PHEV, though they criticized its below-average electric range. They also would have liked to have seen more features on the fully loaded trim.

How this PHEV earned its place

Good Housekeeping determines its winners through rigorous tests for ride quality, interior dimensions, and the ease of operating the infotainment system. For hybrid cars, GH places extra emphasis on the overall efficiency of the battery and the usability of the eco controls.

GH engineers also examine the price difference between the hybrid and its gas-operated sibling. The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV starts at $51,900, while the regular Audi Q5 retails for $43,300. Considering its increased power and efficiency, it’s a nice deal for a luxury hybrid plug-in.

The wealthy do everything differently. We philistines frankly have no idea just how different their lives are. That includes something as simple as renting cars at the airport. If you’ve ever gotten on a plane, you’ll know what the process is like. Board, maybe get some peanuts, watch a movie on your iPad, go haggle with a rental car agent, cry. Every aspect of that process is different for the hyper-wealthy.

The rich don’t just do rental cars different

I should know. For some time, I worked at… well, let’s just call it “Bob’s Rent-a-Car”. We rented cars at a private airfield. Because it was a private airfield, that means we rented to people coming off private jets. Now, these are some of the most absurdly wealthy people on the planet, literally. Once, we rented a car to Jeff Bezos and his security team. I could name plenty of other A-listers that came through the airport, but for them, the rental experience is totally different.

Each guest (you have to call them guests) has a file. In that file are all kinds of ridiculous requests and pet peeves. One guy loved Fiji water so much he told us it, along with a random array of snacks, must be in his car. Another liked to have the radio set to a specific station. Additionally, all cars were washed, detailed, and cleaned obsessively. We’d also warm the cars up in the winter and pull them plane-side for those wealthy folks who just could not walk another step.

You’d be surprised what kinds of cars wealthy people rent

Now, I’m sure as you’re reading about this, you must think that Bob’s Rent-a-Car has a fleet of immaculately clean Bentleys, Ferraris, or some other six-figure car. Yes, we did have those, including a Bentley Bentayga Kim K was fond of. Honestly, we never rented them. Bob’s Rent-a-Car would rent those cars out for hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a day. In most instances, the people I spoke to simply didn’t want something that ridiculous.

Peyton Manning liked to rent a plain-old Toyota Highlander for a few hundred bucks a day. Super nice guy, by the way. The wealthy like their rental cars to be subtle, especially some of our more recognizable clientele. By a shocking margin, the Toyota RAV4 was our most popular vehicle. That said, Bob’s Rent-a-Car knew who they were renting to and would charge “for the experience.” Honestly, the attention to detail is what our clientele pay for, not flashy cars.

Sometimes, money is everything

However, there was always that one occasion every full moon when all the stops had to come out. Daddy Warbucks was coming to town and his security detail needed three black Cadillac Escalades, each brand new and well over $100,000 in value. If we didn’t have three on hand, someone was sent to another location to collect it, almost without exception. I once drove 357 miles in one day collecting cars. When you’re wealthy enough to pay $10,000 or more for a plane ride from Cancun to Los Angeles, the cost of your rental, or its flashiness, is something I’m simply too poor to understand.

The car enthusiast’s outcry of “save the manuals!” will soon come to a quiet whisper as stick shift-equipped cars slowly make their exit from the market. It’s a sad thought, but the six-speed manual transmission still remains in many new cars. But whatever happened to the five-speed manual transmission, do any automakers still have cars equipped with them? Indeed they do, here are the remaining four new cars on the market that you can buy with a five-speed manual transmission.

The Chevrolet Spark can be ordered with “five on the floor”

2021 Chevrolet Spark | Chevrolet

It’s no surprise that you’ll have to look at some of the more affordable commuter cars to find an older five-speed transmission, but you won’t have to look far. According to Autoweek, the 2021 Chevrolet Spark can still be ordered with a manual transmission sans a sixth gear, albeit only in its base form.

If you are lucky enough to find a Chevy Spark LS Manual, then you’ll be happy to know that it only comes with a stick shift. What’s even better is that it has a starting price of $14,595 as opposed to its CVT-equipped counterpart that carries a $15,695, so you’ll be paying a lot less for that extra pedal on the floor. If you want more than what the base model offers, then you can opt for the 2LT Manual trim, which adds features like cruise control and keyless entry.

The Mitsubishi Mirage can still get shifty

It might only have an engine with three cylinders, but the Mitsubishi Mirage also comes with a manual transmission with five gears. The base ES model is available with a five-speed manual transmission and is priced at $14,295, while its CVT-equipped counterpart is priced at $16,220. Autoweek noted that not only is the Mirage one of the last cars with a rare five-speed transmission, but it’s also the cheapest on the market.

The Nissan Versa comes with five gears

If you would rather have a compact sedan with a five-speed manual transmission, as opposed to the aforementioned hatchbacks, then the Nissan Versa could work for you. The 2021 Nissan Versa S comes standard with a manual transmission and is priced at $14,980, which means it’ll cost a little more than the last two cars, but it has more horsepower than either of them. And if you decide that you would rather have an automatic, don’t worry, it’s available with a CVT as well, but that one costs around $1,500 more.

The Subaru Impreza drive four wheels with five speeds

Anyone looking for a car with an all-wheel drivetrain and a manual transmission will find what they are looking for in a base 2021 Subaru Impreza. Both the entry-level sedan and hatchback models are available with a five-speed manual transmission both are priced below $20,000. However, if you would rather have a CVT-equipped Impreza, then you will end up spending around $21,000.

Are five-speed manual transmissions here to stay?

Probably not. Considering automakers are currently phasing out manual transmissions altogether, we would be surprised if any five-speed manuals make the cut over the next few years. But if you’re the type that likes to be nostalgic and drive a car with five on the floor and a new car warranty, then one of these four cars could suit you well.
