“Living well is the best revenge” is the saying that inspired Billy Joel, one of the music world’s most famous celebrities, to name one of his yachts Vendetta. Joel has been living well, made clear by his top-of-the-line yacht. He can use his yacht to travel to his own sold-out New York shows.

Joel’s yacht is a blast from the past

Vendetta is a particular type of yacht known as a commuter yacht. These luxurious yachts first gained popularity in the 1920s, when rich Long Islanders began to use them for their daily commutes to Manhattan. Joel helped design Vendetta and modeled the boat on these Great Gatsby-type predecessors.

Robb Report says of 1920s commuter yachts, “The idea was simple: Create a sleek-looking craft with the same levels of fit and finish as the golden yachts of the era, provide enough seats for a small dinner party, and make sure it is fast enough to beat any train to lower Manhattan.”

Speed is a key characteristic of commuter yachts. Their point isn’t just to take a leisurely journey around the sea. It’s to get someone where they need to go as quickly and luxuriously as possible.

Doug Yurn, who designed Joel’s ride, has also produced other well-known commuter yachts. Robb Report calls his 63-foot Lynx Commuter “one of his finest designs, a broad-shouldered, straight-edged Downeast-ish yacht with a large cockpit and center walkway, connected to a generous area forward beneath the hardtop.”

Another fave of Robb Report is the Van Dam Geronimo, which boasts a rounded cockpit, forward love seat for two, and modern mahogany construction.

Joel’s yacht was his concert transportation

Joel has really taken his ownership to a whole different level. According to Boat International, he owned as many as five different yachts at one time. He owned the 95-foot Audacious, which housed some of his motorcycles along with the Vendetta.

Vendetta was Joel’s best-known, thanks to its role in shuttling him to Manhattan. Northrop and Johnson explain that Joel assisted designer Zurn in coming up with the stylistic concept for the 57-ft Vendetta.

Vendetta was built in 2005 and, according to Zurn Yachts, cost $2.5 million. It featured ample cockpit space along with a luxurious interior. The yacht could reach speeds up to 50 knots thanks to twin 1,300 hp MAN diesel engines. It also featured an advanced composite hull made of hybrid Kevlar.

Club Yacht explains that although Vendetta was designed to simulate the classic commuter yacht of 100 years ago, it still boasted many modern bells and whistles. These included a custom Raymarine electronics package, air-conditioning, comfortable seating, and a state-of-the-art propulsion system.

All this impressive technology had a particular purpose: to ferry Joel from his home in Long Island to his concerts in New York City. Why worry about getting stuck in traffic and being late for your own show when you can simply cruise into the harbor?

Joel surely got a great deal of use out of his yacht. Back in 2014, he began a residency at Madison Square Garden, committing to monthly shows for as long as tickets were selling. As of March 2020, he was still going strong, reaching his 120th all-time show at the venue before the pandemic.

What happened to ‘Vendetta’?

Robb Report says that in 2016, two California businessmen who wished to remain anonymous, purchased Vendetta from Joel. The boat underwent a two-year refit under their ownership at the direction of designer Zurn. The refit was intended to increase the yacht’s ability to navigate the waters of the West Coast comfortably as an ocean cruiser.

As one of the owners told Robb Report, “We wanted the refit to be seamless, but to transform Vendetta from a quality, utilitarian, four-person fast boat to a 12-guest luxury entertainment yacht.”

Vendetta was listed for sale with Fraser Yachts at a price of just under $2.1 million following the refit.  As the yacht continues to improve the lives of its owners, we’ll have to wait and see where it next emerges in the news.

In the market for a spacious family hauler? Chances are you’re looking for a three-row SUV. But how do you choose the best three-row SUV for your brood? If you’re shopping for a used model, Kelley Blue Book (KBB) suggests opting for a certified pre-owned (CPO) three-row SUV instead. And if you’re shopping for a three-row SUV under $30,000? These models are KBB’s top picks for the best CPO three-row SUVs under $30,000.

What’s the difference between used and certified pre-owned cars?

Certified pre-owned cars aren’t like used cars. As a matter of fact, there are some pretty big differences between a CPO and a used car. Unlike your typical used car, a CPO car must undergo a comprehensive vehicle inspection. Typically, car dealerships will also carry out any needed repairs and replace all worn parts before listing a CPO for sale, Autotrader reports.

Perhaps what’s most appealing about buying a CPO, however, is that not a used car must meet certain criteria to be considered a certified pre-owned car. For example, Toyota requires its CPO cars to be newer than six model years old, have less than 85,000 miles on the odometer, and have a CarFax Vehicle History Report. All used cars must also pass Toyota’s rigorous 185-point inspection before being listed as CPO. That goes for CPO three-row SUVs, too.

As for the best CPO three-row SUVs under $30,000? As it turns out, there are quite a few to choose from, KBB reports. The 2018 Mazda CX-9 found itself among KBB’s top picks for the best CPO three-row SUVs under $30,000, and for good reasons too.

Driven by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the 2018 Mazda CX-9 offers up both a “superior ride” and better handling versus its more well-known rivals, KBB reports. Its interior is nothing short of impressive too. In fact, according to KBB, this CPO three-row SUV “blurs the lines between family vehicle and luxury cruiser.”

And if safety is a concern? You’ll be pleased to know that this CPO three-row SUV comes standard with Smart City Brake Support, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring. The IIHS also tapped it as a Top Safety Pick for the 2018 model year. The NHTSA also gave it a five-star overall safety rating.

“If your enthusiast-driving side is now in direct conflict with your growing family’s transportation needs, the 2018 Mazda CX-9 offers the best of both worlds.”

Say the 2018 Mazda CX-9 isn’t quite you’re style. The good news is that the 2018 Honda Pilot also landed a spot on KBB’s list of the best CPO three-row SUVs under $30,000. According to KBB, this CPO three-row SUV is the perfect fit for road trips. It offers up seating for eight passengers and has plenty of storage space.

The 2018 Honda Pilot is excellent to drive, too, KBB reports. At the heart of it is a 3.5-liter V6 engine that puts out 280-hp. Teamed with either a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 9-speed automatic transmission, this CPO three-row SUV boasts a comfortable ride and responsive steering.

KBB isn’t the only one singing the used Honda Pilot’s praises either. In fact, according to Consumer Reports, the 2018 Honda Pilot earned a five out of five predicted reliability rating. Car and Driver also lauded the three-row SUV for its “spacious, practical, solidly built, and relatively upscale” interior.

“With a high seating position, kid-friendly interior, and vast cargo space, the Honda Pilot midsize SUV has what it takes to win over buyers with families.”

The best CPO three-row SUV under $30,000 is the 2017 Toyota Highlander, KBB reports. Under the hood is a 185-hp 2.7-liter inline-4 engine, though the 2017 Highlander can also be had with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that boasts 295-hp to its name. According to KBB, the 2017 Toyota Highlander offers up a comfortable ride. But if you want maximum acceleration? You’re going to want a Highlander with a V6 under the hood.

The 2017 Toyota Highlander comes stock full of family-friendly features too. In fact, KBB reports that the Highlander’s Driver Easy Speak system is among the best Toyota Highlander features. This convenient intercom system projects your voice throughout the CPO three-row SUV and can even reach the third row. What’s not to like about that?

Much like the 2018 Mazda CX-9, the 2017 Toyota Highlander is also a safe three-row SUV. It’s standard with Toyota Safety Sense Plus, which includes safety features like active cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, and lane-departure alert and warning. With so many safety features to its name, it’s no surprise that the 2017 Toyota Highlander is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

“Toyota’s midsize SUV will continue to be a best-seller for all the right reasons.”

KBB

Honda has an almost unblemished record of reliability. However, Consumer Reports shows three of its vehicles that prospective buyers perhaps shouldn’t consider as reliable investments. Consumer Reports put the Accord, Civic and Pilot under the microscope as three of Honda’s cars with poor predicted reliability. Consumer Reports averages all of the car’s reliability scores from 2011 to the present day, therefore a 2021 model year car’s predicted reliability is impacted by past faults.

2021 Honda Accord: Damaged Reputation

2021 Honda Accord | Honda

Consumer Reports gave the Honda Accord a predicted reliability rating of 3-out-of-5. It cited past issues having to do with major engine problems, the drive system, and body integrity as the Accord’s potential trouble spots. According to Consumer Reports, major engine problems include a rebuilt, or problems with the turbocharger, cylinder head, and timing chain. The body integrity metric looks at noises, leaks, and loose or cracked seals.

Despite its predicted reliability, the Accord still earns an 84-out-of-100 overall rating. It completed the road test in spades, its CVT transmission being a strong point in its performance. The Accord’s 192 hp 1.5-liter turbocharged engine provides ample acceleration without sacrificing fuel efficiency. It’s a well-rounded car, without few faults.

The Accord received stellar marks for safety. It scored 5-out-of-5 stars in every safety test from both the IIHS and NHTSA. This is one Honda that doesn’t deserve its predicted reliability.

2021 Honda Civic: Still Reliable

The Civic earned the same predicted reliability as the Accord, but for different reasons. Its climate system, body hardware, power equipment, and paint/trim categories were to blame. The climate system metric refers to anything having to do with the air conditioning system or the heater system.

Body hardware includes locks, latches, and hinges. Power equipment concerns power windows, windshield wiper motors, cruise control, keyless entry, etc. The Civic also has a reputation for malfunctioning in-car electronics, which include the sound system and cameras. Despite these issues, the Civic is still recommended by Consumer Reports thanks to its sporty drivability and low price tag. Its predicted reliability doesn’t reflect the improvements Honda made in recent years. The Civic’s base engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 174 hp, which is enough to move the car quickly.

Like the Accord, the Civic also received top scores in its safety tests from the IIHS and NHTSA, following its safety performance from the previous model year.

Honda Pilot: Predicted Reliability Looks Bleak

2021 Honda Pilot Elite | Honda

While the Civic and Accord improved dramatically since 2011, the Pilot has poor reliability ratings peppered throughout its tenure, with the 2015 model year being the exception. 2021 model year’s predicted reliability rests on problems with the paint/trim, body integrity, power equipment, and in-car electronics. It also scores low on the owner satisfaction scale, with owners claiming the car isn’t worth the price. Its brakes are also a weakness, along with slow steering and overwhelming body roll. The Pilot may be one of Honda’s most unreliable cars.

Despite all this, Consumer Reports still recommends the Pilot. Comfortable seating, lots of cargo space, and a quiet ride earn the Pilot the seal of approval from Consumer Reports. The Pilot comes equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 280 horsepower. It accelerates quickly without much trouble, especially when fitted with its all-wheel drive configuration.

The Pilot did not mimic the Accord and Civic when it came to safety tests. It scored 5-out-of-five stars in most tests, but with the NHTSA’s frontal-crash and both rollover tests, it received 4-out-of-5 stars.

With the exception of the Pilot, Honda cars generally retain their reputation for being reliable. The Accord contends with body integrity, though this current model year bests the previous year according to Consumer Reports. The Civic has a similar story, though it still has several electrical problems to work out. Like any auto manufacturer, Honda has its hiccups but overall it doesn’t make unreliable cars.

Toyota makes a pretty good-sized lineup of SUVs. Some of them are large brutish off-roaders like the Toyota Land Cruiser. Others are compact crossovers like the Toyota RAV4, which comes as both a hybrid and RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. But what is the actual order of these SUVs from smallest to largest? What is the smallest Toyota SUV

2021 Toyota CH-R | Toyota USA

For anyone looking to get into a Toyota SUV without going big, there are actually a few options. That said, the Toyota CH-R is the smallest Toyota SUV. The most entry-level option for buyers that are shopping for a Toyota SUV is this small subcompact crossover.

Is the 2021 Toyota CH-R a good car?

The Toyota CH-R was released in 2018. Its styling has attracted a number of buyers. However, most of those buyers say they wouldn’t go back for another CH-R according to Consumer Reports data. This subcompact crossover is the smallest Toyota SUV.

It competes with others like the Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek, and Mazda CX-3. But all of these options have available all-wheel drive. The Crosstrek has this feature as standard equipment, in fact, while the 2021 Toyota CH-R doesn’t even offer it.

In addition, Consumer Reports tests show an acceleration from 0-60 mph time of over 11 seconds. That means that this attractive little subcompact crossover is also very slow. One more reason the 2021 Toyota CH-R isn’t recommended by CR is that both side and rear visibility in the CH-R are “horrendous.”

However, it does have great fuel economy. CR tests show 42 mpg on the highway, 19 mpg in the city, and 29 mpg combined. This is actually even better than the EPA estimate Toyota shows of 27 mpg in the city and 31 mpg in on the highway. While there are downsides, if you don’t care about punchy acceleration the CH-R makes a great entry level subcompact SUV with high predicted reliability scores.

How much is this subcompact crossover?

2021 Toyota CH-R | Toyota USA

According to Toyota’s website, the 2021 Toyota CH-R starts at $21,595. The LE is the base trim for the CH-R subcompact crossover. Moving up through the trim levels are the XLE, which starts at $23,630. This trim adds upgraded wheels and things like blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

New for 2021 is the Nightshade Edition CH-R. This trim adds black wheels and other blacked out details, starting for $24,395. The range topping Limited trim is fully loaded with a starting price of $26,650.

The smallest Toyota SUV

The Toyota RAV4 is the next size up from the CH-R. Its compact size and the fact that Toyota offers hybrid options make this one of the most popular vehicles in the U.S. The 2021 Toyota RAV4 starts for $26,250.

So for buyers that can’t spend that few thousand dollars extra (or don’t want to) there’s the smaller 2021 CH-R. It’s a solid entry-level choice for Toyota fans. Though it has its drawbacks, it does have a spot in the lineup. The 2021 Toyota CH-R is a decent subcompact crossover and is just the right price––and size––for some shoppers.
