About a week ago Hyundai announced its intentions to unveil a hydrogen-powered hybrid sports car. Thankfully it finally happened when they said it would, on Sept. 7, in the form of its Vision FK. At this stage of EV development, producing something that runs on hydrogen seems like a bit of a gambit. However, Hyundai usually knows what it’s doing when it comes to sports cars.

A week ago there were only snippets from teaser videos the Korean automaker released. From them, motorists could discern the car would most likely be rear-wheel-drive, judging from the drifting. Some said it would be a hydrogen-powered Kia Stinger, and they were right, in a way.

What is the Hyundai Vision FK?

The Vision FK looks suspiciously like a Kia Stinger, but with two doors instead of four. The roof slopes down and joins the liftback trunk, similar to the rear end of the Stinger. Pictures of the Vision show massive ducting behind the doors that presumably lead to the rear tires, which are encased in wide-body quarter-panels. The front fenders are wide-body as well, and the front bumper has ducting as well.

What kind of power is the Hyundai Vision FK capable of?

Though it may be based on the Stinger, the Hyundai Vision FK is sure to outperform if its specs are realized. Hyundai claims the FK will have 670 horsepower and reach 62 mph in less than four seconds. The Stinger, meanwhile, has 368 horsepower in its most extreme trim and gets to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The Stinger could stand to shed a few pounds as well, that is if it’s not canceled. Its curb weight reads 3,611 at its lightest spec. Switching to a two-door should help with that.

Will the Hyundai Vision FK have enough juice to cross the state border?

Hyundai claims the FK can go 370 miles, which is ambitious, to say the least. However, there are some aspects to the FK that shouldn’t go unnoticed before scoffing at the expected range. The FK’s battery is made by Rimac, and considering Hyundai and Rimac have been in cahoots since 2019, with a solid $90 million investment from the modest Korean automaker, that range suddenly makes a lot more sense. 370 miles is enough for a road trip, but as we’ve already covered, hydrogen pumps are scarce.

How feasible is the Vision FK?

With Hyundai’s serious investment into hydrogen infrastructure, its partnership with Rimac, and the fact that the FK appears to be based on an already existing car, the FK seems more than feasible. Hyundai has also stated it’s looking into hydrogen and batteries for its N performance brand, which adds more fuel to the fire. Spy shots also confirm a Stinger-based coupe is being tested in South Korea, and at the same time, some leaked shots of a constructed FK came to light. The cars reportedly look fairly similar, thus it’s entirely possible the FK will soon be realized.

Most people know Ken Block from his blockbuster viral Gymkhana videos and his rally racing career. What those people may not know is that Ken Block is also an accomplished businessman and marketing genius. Ken Block is the popular DC Shoes skateboarding brand co-founder and uses his motorsports adventures to expand the DC shoes audience to gearheads and racing fans.

After selling off DC Shoes, Block started a new brand called Hoonigan, a portmanteau of “goon” and “hooligan.” Hoonigan started as an apparel line, but Block eventually expanded it into an all-encompassing automotive lifestyle brand that includes motorsports teams, apparel, an online performance parts shop, and a YouTube channel with 4.5 million subscribers.

It looks like all of the time and effort that Ken Block put into Hoonigan will pay off in a major way.

Hoonigan merges with Wheel Pros

It was recently announced that Wheel Pros, which is one of the biggest aftermarket wheel companies in the world, has entered into a merger agreement with Ken Block’s brand. Wheel Pros currently owns over 40 wheel brands, including American Racing, Motegi Racing, Rotiform, and DUB Wheels.

Between all Wheel Pros’ brands, they produce wheels for cars, trucks, SUVs, and even “power sports” vehicles like ATVs and UTVs. The conglomerate went on quite the buying spree in the early days of their formation as they were backed by Clearlake Capital Group L.P., a large investment firm.

With the addition of Hoonigan, Wheel Pros has officially expanded to offerings other than aftermarket wheels for the first time in their history.

What will happen to Hoonigan after the merger with Wheel Pros?

In the press release announcing the merger, it is stated that co-founders Ken Block and Brian Scotto will both remain with the merged Hoonigan company along with Hoonigan President Jennifer van Dijjk. The press release gave no details about any potential changes to Hoonigan’s other business areas, such as their apparel line or their media division.

The Hoonigan YouTube channel has such a large following due in part to the personalities that regularly appear in Hoonigan videos like Hetrech “Hert” Eugene Jr. and John “Nads” Naderi. We would speculate that neither party would want to mess up something that is clearly working.

Another big question mark is Ken Block’s motorsport activities. Ken Block’s involvement in rally racing, Gymkhana, and other motorsports has served as the main stage for promoting the Hoonigan brand to his millions of fans all over the world. It seems prudent that both sides of this merger would want to keep the Hoonigan Racing Division in place to further those goals.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for Hoonigan to continue to expand and serve its ever-growing audience,” said Ken Block. “We have had the chance to work closely with the Wheel Pros team over the last few years, and believe they are the perfect partners to scale this brand globally. Brian and I have always had massive goals for Hoonigan, our race team and the Gymkhana films, and while we have already achieved many, this relationship will help make even the most ambitious goals a possibility. We couldn’t be more thrilled about this combination, as we will now be able to accelerate many of our plans to provide Hoonigan fans with more ways to pursue their passion, from engaging in even more new content and live events to customizing their vehicles. We also look forward to leveraging Hoonigan’s marketing ability to help grow all of the Wheel Pros brands.”

Judging by Block’s statement, it appears that Hoonigan will remain as it is for the most part but use their massive following to help some of Wheel Pros’ brands grow their awareness with Hoonigan’s key demographic.

We hope that neither party in this merger tries to fix something that isn’t broken.

Lego vehicles will always get our attention here at MotorBiscuit. There is something about building a scale model of cars out of plastic bricks and pieces that is soothing to the gearhead soul. That is why we always keep an eye out for any new vehicle sets that Lego may quietly reveal.

Some Lego vehicle sets received significant fanfare on their release, such as the Lamborghini Sian Technic set and the Toyota GR Supra Speed Champions set. Others fly a bit under the radar. For example, Lego revealed that a new set based on the Tumbler from the Christopher Nolan Batman films is coming this year.

Batman Tumbler is a tank with wheels

First introduced in Batman Begins, the “Tumbler” was a new take on what audiences expect from a Batmobile. The Tumbler is a large, tank-like utilitarian vehicle rather than a campy muscle car as seen in the 60s Adam West Batman TV show or the iconic, sleek coupe seen in the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film

One of the most impressive things about the Tumbler is the fact that it was an actual vehicle. Warner Bros. used little to no CGI (computer-generated image) to create the vehicle that audiences saw on the silver screen. The Tumbler was built on a custom space-frame tube chassis with a bespoke suspension that allowed the Tumbler to land jumps off 6-foot ramps easily. The production crew equipped the tumbler with a 5.7 liter General Motors engine that made between 400 and 500 horsepower.

As you can imagine, the jet engine in the back was made purely for movie magic and did not provide any thrust to propel the Tumbler. The flames were provided by a custom fuel line that fed an igniter mechanism.

According to an interview with Tech Radar, the production crew’s goal was to build a car that could reliably hit 60 mph, but once the Tumbler started coming together, they pushed that goal to 100 mph.

Despite the Tumbler’s size, it could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 6 seconds.

A brand new Batman Tumbler set was recently revealed on Lego’s website, but this is actually not the first time Lego has produced a set based on this vehicle. Back in 2008, a limited edition Batman Tumbler Lego set was released but quickly sold out. Collectors and Batman fans acquired Lego’s entire stock of the set in a matter of weeks. Since then, the set was not restocked until now.

This new Lego Batman Tumbler set is not simply a re-release of the previous set. Instead, it is a new version of the model entirely. On the outside, the old and new Batman Tumblers might look the same at first glance. Though, it appears that this new set will be slightly larger and possibly more detailed.

Whereas the 2008 Batman Tumbler set comprised 1,869 individual pieces, the new Lego Batman Tumbler is made up of 2,049 individual pieces. When comparing dimensions, the new Tumbler kit is at least an inch larger in each dimension (height, width, and length).

The new Batman Tumbler is set to release November 1, 2021, but it is available for pre-order right now on Lego’s website.

This set will be the closest most people will come to owning their own real-life Batman Tumbler unless they have one heck of a project car in their garage.
