The Nissan Pathfinder was first introduced in 1985 as the Japanese vehicle manufacturer’s response to the Chevy Blazer. Sales numbers have always remained relatively modest compared to competitors since the Nissan Pathfinder’s introduction, never exceeding 90,000 units sold in any year. But with the new, family-friendly 2022 Pathfinder loaded with features, it seems Nissan wants to claim a spot on the sales leaderboard.

The Nissan Pathfinder is one of the most kid-friendly midsize three-row SUVs

2022 Nissan Pathfinder | Nissan Motor Corporation

MotorTrend reviewers seem pretty impressed with the new 2022 Nissan Pathfinder, writing that “Nissan is eager to return to the midsize three-row SUV sales leaderboard.” They continue by stating, “So designers and product planners toiling on the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder put on their thinking caps and came up with a raft of cool upgrades aimed at making us forget all about the unlamented fourth-generation ‘Mallfinder’ midsize three-row crossover.”

MotorTrend pointed out nine of these family-friendly features in a recent June 2021 review of the 2022 Pathfinder. The Platinum trim comes standard with newly available second-row captain’s chairs equipped with one-touch electric release buttons. “The switches lift and tilt the seat without changing the backrest angle, so it can be done with a child seat installed,” the author explained. The passage between the second row measures 10 inches, starting at the floor, with the widest point measuring 24 inches.

Nissan’s Zero Gravity design concept added 4.7 inches of hip room in third-row seats. The author of the MotorTrend review called it a “Three-Kid Third Row.” However, “There’s not quite enough height from hip to ankle for taller adults to get comfy, and the 46.7 inches of official hip room is tight for three adults,” they clarified.

Nissan has made the rear heat, and AC controls to a level that makes it easier for kids of all ages to reach. Another significant update for 2022 is having the second-row AC vents moved to the side rails of the ceiling rather than in the center console. By positioning the AC vents there, the cold air won’t dry out a baby’s eyes. On top of that, it’s a more energy-efficient way to cool the space and allows more room for a panoramic roof.

Nissan Pathfinder: Great utility features for busy families

Nissan did remember that teenagers and adults will be passengers of the 2022 Pathfinder as well, so you’ll find plenty of great utility features for families with busy lives. Since smartphones have become an increasing part of that business, the passenger-side dash tray is deep and wide—two of the largest smartphones or phablets on the market today, the iPhone 12 Pro Max or Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, can sit side by side.

A sizeable Qi-format wireless charging mat is in the center console, allowing for a third smartphone of similar size. Sloping down and forward, the wireless charging mat has a rubbery surface for improved grip, as well as a “lip” at the bottom.

The MotorTrend review stated that “Pathfinders equipped with the captain’s chairs in the second row also get a center console that’s a breeze to remove.” Additionally, the cup holders are “Big-Gulp Friendly,” capable of accommodating even the largest refillable water bottles within reason. But it’s not only large beverages Nissan thought about: a four-foot-wide cargo area allows you to fit sheets of plywood in the rear.

For those trips that require wings, six TSA-approved roll-aboard suitcases can be stuffed behind the third row. That’s two piles of three. Tailgaters can also fit their 120-quart cooler back there. A big under-floor bin with wipe-clean plastic lining is the perfect solution for grubbier items. Not only does this bin have removable dividers, but friction hinges keep the lid open as well.

The starting MSRP of $33,410 won’t get you many family-friendly features

Nissan’s tagline for the 2022 Pathfinder is “Return to rugged.” But don’t think you’ll be doing any returning to rugged merely paying the base price. The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder is powered by either a 2WD or 4WD drivetrain. The 2WD model has an MSRP of $33,410, while the 4WD model is priced starting at $35,310, according to Nissan.

If you’re one who sees little logicality in buying a 2WD SUV and opts for the 4WD model, all trims come standard with a 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve direct-injection V6 engine. It produces 284 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission with “manual mode.”

For features listed by MotorTrend, such as the second-row fold-down captain’s chairs, the panoramic moonroof, and the wireless charger, be prepared to spend $48,090 on the 4WD Platinum trim. The “Latch and Glide” seating system and 3rd-row 60/40-split fold-flat reclining bench seat come standard in the S trim model.

Rivian has been putting out new features left and right. At this point, it’s hard even to dream up something you’d actually want in an electric truck/SUV that Rivian hasn’t already considered. Everyone has just now calmed down after the announcement of Rivian’s “Tank Turn,” now the coolest electric truck maker has patented a new turning feature with a name borrowed from Star Wars; “K Turn,” or as fellow Star Wars nerds might know it, a drop-kick Koiogran turn.

Rivian R1T | Rivian

What does the Rivian K-turn do?

According to Wookieepedia, “A Koiogran turn, or drop-kick Koiogran turn, was a combat maneuver developed by Kendra Novar that was utilized by starfighter pilots to escape pursuit. By pushing the throttle forward with one hand and twisting the control stick with the other, the pilot would lose all forward momentum and loop-roll in another direction.”

Although Rivian trucks don’t fly (yet), the K turn is still a super cool concept for off-roaders. The Tank Turn is a very cool feature, but in sand or other soft surfaces, the Tank turn can dig a hole for the truck, getting it stuck. Seeing as how that is pretty much the opposite of what most off-road adventures are going for, Rivian decided to add another slick, and in this case, Star Wars-themed, turning setting.

According to Car and Driver, the K turn will use the same four-motor (one per wheel) system to hold one of the inside rear wheels and allow the vehicle to pivot around it, dramatically reducing its turning radius.

Rivan’s K turn is built off the Tank turn

The Tank turn is exactly what it sounds like. The one side of the Rivian’s wheels goes forward while the other side goes backward, just like a tank can do. This allows for an about-face style turn that is essentially a perfect 180-degree turn. The reason this is so cool for an off-road truck is that if you find yourself stuck on a tight trail, the tank turn feature can spin the truck around without having to do a much wider three- (or 100-) point turn.

However, this style of turning can dig a bit of a hole on less stable surfaces like sand and could potentially make a bad situation worse. As we have learned, Rivian is all about function, and that won’t fly for them. So, the K-turn will use the same system as yet another tool in the Rivian’s bag of tricks.

What features Will the Rivian R1S and R1T have?

Rivian R1S | Rivian

Along with the tank turn and K-turn, Rivian is doing as much as possible to make the R1T and R1S as usable and driver-focused as possible. Rivian recently announced that the R1T would offer a fold-out electric cooktop for outdoor adventures. They also offer a series of custom wraps and even a huge network of trail chargers for off-roading “fuel” top-offs.

Lastly, if all of that innovation wasn’t enough, Rivian is also only going to have 10 dealers. This means customers will no longer have to deal with salespeople and dealerships to buy a car. Rivian is going direct to the consumer. While this is far from the most exciting innovation Rivian is pushing, this may be the most extreme. I would doubt that many automakers will add electric stoves to their cars, but if this dealership-less model works, there’s a strong chance other marques will follow.

Rivian is coming soon, and that isn’t soon enough

We, the Biscuits, are very excited for the Rivian R1T and R1S to start deliveries. If these electric trucks can deliver on half of the promises they have made, it will easily be the most exciting and innovative EV we have seen yet. Long live Rivian.

When it comes to off-roading, there’s no surprise that pickup trucks are popular. But when we think of an off-road pickup truck, body-on-frame beasts like the Toyota Tacoma or the Jeep Gladiator come to mind. So what about the more car-like options such as the Ford Maverick, Hyundai Santa Cruz, or Honda Ridgeline? Which unibody pickup truck is the off-road ruler?

Consumer Reports: 2021 Honda Ridgeline | Honda

The Honda Ridgeline and the Ford Maverick both have off-road packages with upgrades

The 2022 Ford Maverick offers a designated off-road package called the FX4. This adds protective skid plates, tow hooks for recovery, and all-terrain tires. This is model also has a higher ground clearance than the base model, which we’ll get into below.

Honda’s all-new 2021 Ridgeline offers the HPD package, but this adds stylistic elements like fender flares, decals, and upgraded wheels for $2,800. It’s not an off-road package. That said, the Honda Ridgeline is intended to act as a toy hauler. Bring your Honda CRF dirtbike, or Falcon UTV along and you probably won’t need a gnarly off-road pickup.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz has the option for all-wheel drive. It also had good ground clearance. However, there isn’t a designated off-road package for this truck

Off-road pickup truck specs reveal some interesting conclusions

The Hyundai Santa Cruise looks like it’s ready for adventure from its cactus gray color option to its utilitarian design. But what are the off-road pickup truck specs for this unibody truck? According to MotorTrend, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz gives drivers 8.6 inches of ground clearance. It also offers the option for all-wheel drive.

According to TheCarConnection, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz has a “breakover angle of 18.6 degrees and approach and departure angles of 17.5 and 23.2 degrees, respectively.” This unibody pickup  truck will be able to handle some off-road travel. But nothing too gnarly without some modification.

Is the 2022 Ford Maverick a better off-roader?

When we look at the numbers, the Ford Maverick appears to be the better option for off-roading. The Maverick in its front-wheel drive version has 8.3 inches of ground clearance. Equipped with all-wheel drive, that number grows to 8.6 inches.

In terms of the approach, breakover, and departure angles, a front-wheel-drive Maverick offers 20.6 degrees, 16.6 degrees, and 21.9 degrees, respectively. With all-wheel drive, Ford’s unibody pickup raises those to 21.6, 18.1, and 21.2 degrees.

The 2021 Honda Ridgeline is pretty tame on paper

The 2021 Honda Ridgeline, on the other hand, has 7.6 inches of ground clearance. The approach, breakover, and departure angles are 20.4, 19.6, and 19.6 degrees respectively. On paper, this truck comes in behind both of the other unibody options.

That said, this truck has a bed that’s a foot longer when dropped down. In addition, the 2021 Honda Ridgeline comes standard with all-wheel drive.

Which unibody truck is the off-road ruler?

The 2022 Ford Maverick lineup | Ford

The 2022 Ford Maverick, by the numbers, is better equipped for off-road romping. Especially if the FX4 package is included. But all of these trucks serve the purpose they are meant to serve.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is an urban ute that’s ready for some weekend adventure. Then there’s the Honda Ridgeline that gives you comfortable all-wheel drive capability to get to basecamp and then take your real off-roading toys out on the trails. The 2022 Ford Maverick is poised to dominate other vehicles in terms of sheer versatility. So it’s not exactly shocking that the off-road pickup truck specs favor the Ford.

Tesla is one of the most innovative automakers in the automotive industry. In 2003 the Californian electric vehicle and clean energy company sought to change the world. Five years later, in 2008, engineer and entrepreneur Elon Musk took over as its CEO. Today Tesla is one of the most successful American companies in existence. How did Tesla become so wildly popular and successful? Like Apple, the company continued to add new features and update its products in exciting ways capturing the attention of consumers and the media. Tesla has a Dog Mode. Why wouldn’t it also have a Bioweapon Defense Mode?

Tesla’s rise in popularity

The 2021 Tesla Model 3 electric car | Tesla

When Tesla first burst onto the scene with the Tesla Roadster, its goals were much different than what they are today. As a new automaker, the company had to go above and beyond to make an impression. The company chose performance as its way to become a household name. The Tesla Roadster boasted amazing performance for an electric car, but with a starting price of $109,000, it didn’t offer much for the average consumer.

The Tesla Roadster had amazing range, and it was fast, but it wasn’t a practical purchase for most buyers. Telsa returned to the market with the Model S, a fast luxury car, yet again priced higher than most vehicles in its class. The automaker seemed as if it was only intent on making vehicles that could compete with supercars.

Today in 2021, the brand has managed to make itself much more accessible. The company’s new goal is to make its lineup as affordable as possible so more consumers can enjoy its vehicles. It has also established a large Supercharger network for drivers. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are currently the most affordable models starting at $39,990.

What keeps consumers interested in the electric vehicle brand?

Tesla recently announced that it is developing a $25,000 hatchback. The automaker is only beginning to introduce affordable vehicles to the market, so how does it keep consumers interested? Features. If Tesla is not making news for a new vehicle, then the many features of its existing vehicles are getting the attention of drivers. Tesla has done an amazing job at creating certain features that are exclusive to the brand and novel to the automotive industry.

Full Self Driving is one of the many amazing features that keeps Tesla’s name buzzing. Autonomous vehicles are controversial, and the automaker has been at the forefront of this controversy for years. Tesla’s Full Self Driving feature uses front-end sensing to avoid accidents with other vehicles. Some Teslas have a Romance Mode. Romance Mode adjusts the cabin temperature, brings a log fire onscreen, and cranks some smooth R&B to set the mood. Some of the company’s features are quirky and silly, but others are deadly serious.

Tesla Model Y Bioweapon Defense Mode

If Tesla is the dominant automaker of the future, then it must be prepared for anything. Unfortunately, that extends to threats and problems that even Dog Mode cannot solve. The engineers at Tesla have made sure that their vehicles are prepared for a problem of near-apocalyptic proportions. No, it’s not a zombie killer mode. It’s the Bioweapon Defense Mode.

According to InsideEVs, Tesla Model Y EVs made in China already started including Bioweapon Defense Mode early this year. Bioweapon Defense mode uses a HEPA filter to filter the air and provide air quality similar to what drivers would experience in a hospital. Bioweapon Defense Mode has been featured in the Model S and Model X but never in American-made Model Ys…until now. In the event of a catastrophic bioweapon attack, Teslas are some of the only vehicles prepared to adapt to this kind of crisis. As usual, Tesla has added yet another amazing feature to keep consumers interested in its futuristic lineup.
