Road safety is one of the most important things to consider anytime you get behind the wheel (or handlebars). As we all know, car safety features have improved immensely in recent years with all the sensors, cameras, automation, and other integrated tech. Even though we have come a long way, Consumer Reports still thinks a few added car safety features could make driving infinitely safer.

Is driving actually safe? 

As Consumer Reports suggests, making cars safer doesn’t always require giant leaps in autonomous space-age technology. It doesn’t require being bulletproof or self-driving robots. We can take some small steps using our critical thinking abilities and make small unnecessary accidents a thing of the past. 

These suggestions come from actual automotive engineers and can all be implemented with current tech and tools. 

Do your headlights have to be on if your windshield wipers are on?

One of the first ideas is also one of the simplest. Many modern cars have automatic lights and sometimes even running lights that run continuously unless manually turned off. This is a good thing; however, why don’t car lights automatically turn on when the windshield wipers are in use

We know having our lights on while it’s raining is a net positive that can help other drivers see our cars and vice versa. 

Car safety should include anti rollaway safeguards

As many may remember, the brilliant young actor Anton Yelchin was tragically killed by his own car after he got out to check the mail, and it rolled back and pinned him between the brick mailbox and the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 

This is also why many other incidents like it could easily be prevented if cars just had an anti-rollback feature. As Consumer Reports says, “We believe a car should auto-shift into Park whenever the driver turns off the engine, as some vehicles already do.” In fact, CR already deducts points from a car’s safety score if this feature isn’t included. 

Along with auto shifting into park, cars should also automatically shut off if they are left idling for too long. Carbon monoxide poisoning is still a common cause of death in America. If someone accidentally leaves their car on in an enclosed space, CR suggests that the engine should be programmed to shut off after a predetermined amount of time. This may also help prevent suicides as well. This feels like a simple fix for a simple hazard. 

Consumer Reports has plenty of thoughts on tires

Underinflated tires can cause a myriad of problems like premature wear, gas waste, and poor handling. At the same time, there are many tools to inflate one’s tires properly; why not just have an alert like some newer Nissan’s horn blast that indicates when a tire’s pressure has been refilled properly. “All cars should have an alert system to aid proper filling of tires,” says Gene Petersen, tire program manager at CR.

Along with tires, CR also believes cars should have more adjustable seat belts. We know how important seat belts are, and they remain fairly static devices. The length is adjustable, of course, but what about height. This is a simple observation of the way people work. If seat belts are more comfortable, then it’s likely that more people will wear them. 

It’s time we take road safety more seriously

Consumer Reports always prioritizes crash test ratings and safety features in their reviews of new cars. Road safety is something we all should be more shrewd about. Driving is a dangerous activity that is a necessity for people all across the world. We know how dangerous it is, yet the marketplace seems slow to fix some more easily solvable hazards.

We get it: Car shopping can be boring when you’re looking through vast crowds of similar models. Some automakers have been teasing flying cars and hover cars, but they still aren’t available for purchase. In the meantime, you might be better off trying to find an amphibious car.

As you’d expect from its name, an amphibious vehicle can travel on land and water. In addition to cars, there have even been amphibious ATVs and tour buses. So, how did amphibious cars come into being, and can you buy one for yourself?

The history of amphibious cars

Amphibious vehicles have been documented as early as the 1770s, when they were used by royals as carriages. The first motorized amphibious vehicle was a dredging barge built by an American inventor in 1805. Alligator tugs — boats that could pull themselves short distances on land using a winch — would later come in the 1870s.

These examples were few and far between, but amphibious vehicles really started gaining traction in the 1920s. Many drivers used them for recreation or transporting important goods. However, some of these vehicles were also created exclusively as military or search and rescue vehicles.

Amphibious cars became popular around World War II, partially thanks to the Volkswagen Schwimmwagen, ATI reports. It could cross most bodies of water when the driver lowered a screw propeller from the vehicle’s rear deck. It had a top speed of 6 mph on water and 50 mph on land.

The Amphicar, inspired by the Schwimmwagen, is famous for being the most popular amphibious automobile sold to civilians. Produced in the 1960s, the Model 770 could travel 7 knots in the water, a little over 8 mph. It wasn’t as easy to handle as a boat, but it could stay docked for hours without water leakage.

Models you can buy today

Nowadays, manufacturers such as Gibbs make speedier amphibious vehicles like the Aquada. According to Hagerty, it was the first aquatic car to reach over 30 mph on water. This is possible due to its retractable wheel system, which deploys the wheels quickly in water with the press of a button.

WaterCar is another prominent modern amphibious automobile manufacturer. The Panther is one of the brand’s most popular models, with a record-breaking top speed of 60 mph on water. Many drivers also liken it to a Jeep Wrangler because of its distinct fender design and overall utility.

Elon Musk apparently also wants to create a modern amphibious car that can travel underwater. In 2013, he purchased the Wet Nellie, a Lotus Esprit-inspired “amphibicar” that appeared in a James Bond film. The amphibious version of this car was also reportedly the inspiration for the Tesla Cybertruck.

You can even combine ocean cruising with RV living if you can find a “Boaterhome.” It rides on the same chassis as the Ford Econoline van, measuring 36 feet long and equipped with many household amenities. It can also breeze through the water as quickly as 40 mph. Only 21 were ever made, but BoatBlurb reports that a second Boaterhome is in development.

Is it hard to find an amphibious car?

Amphibious vehicles aren’t difficult to locate online, but they can be expensive. According to WaterCar, a custom-made Panther can be purchased for $198,000. Another amphibious vehicle, the Gibbs Humdinga amphitruck, retails for $500,000.

One of the most expensive amphibious automobiles is the Terra Wind RV, priced at more than $1 million. Older vehicles, like the original Amphicar, are also relatively scarce, especially in good condition.

Fortunately, amphibious ATVs are as capable in water and vastly more affordable. Gibbs sells the Quadski and its XL variant for around $40,000.

Many people turned to Amazon to buy all sorts of things during the pandemic, and they wanted their orders to come quickly. That’s why the company has rapidly grown its delivery capabilities, both on the ground and in the air. To make the buying process from sale to delivery more efficient, Amazon has begun purchasing its own cargo airplanes as well.

Does Amazon have its own planes?

Amazon Air, which was previously called Prime Air, was launched in 2016. In January 2021, Amazon announced that it had purchased 11 jets from Delta and WestJet airlines to join its fleet of planes, reports the Chicago Tribune. The planes are all Boeing 767-300s, and they’ll be modified from passenger planes to cargo planes.

The four planes coming from WestJet will be transferred to Amazon in 2021, and the seven coming from Delta will be added in 2022. The company has not announced how much it has paid for the 11 new planes.

Why did Amazon buy its own planes?

The company bought the planes to increase its delivery network and deliver orders faster across long distances. Before this purchase, Amazon only leased planes to make its deliveries. The Amazon Air fleet now includes both leased and owned planes.

“Our goal is to continue delivering for customers across the U.S. in the way that they expect from Amazon, and purchasing our own aircraft is a natural next step toward that goal,” Sarah Rhoads, Vice President of Amazon Global Air, said in an Amazon blog post. “Having a mix of both leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to manage better our operations, which, in turn, helps us to keep pace with meeting our customer promises.” With the 11 new planes, the company will have 85 planes in its fleet by 2022.

Plans for the fleet of planes

Amazon’s fleet of planes will have grown from 50 in February 2020 to 85 in 2022, says CNBC. Most of the planes not owned by the company are leased from Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and Air Transport Services Group. Amazon continues to use third-party carriers to operate the planes, but it is beginning to hire its own ground staff in some locations.

Amazon doesn’t yet have as many planes as FedEx, which operates 679 planes, or UPS, which operates 572 planes, but it could grow into a position where it also offers shipping services for third parties, says CNBC. A study from DePaul University, done in May 2020, predicted that the delivery company could have 200 planes by 2027 or 2028, says Modern Retail.

Amazon expands its delivery services

Operating its own planes adds to Amazon’s expansion of its own delivery capabilities. The company now has fewer deliveries going through the U.S. Postal Service, UPS, FedEx, and other shipping services. Additionally, Amazon has made efforts to make the use of its planes more environmentally friendly. The company bought six million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel in 2020, and it has purchased electric ground service equipment and solar panels for some facilities.

The company also recently started using its own delivery trucks, including Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and Ram ProMaster work vans. It will also be adding electric trucks made by Rivian, says MotorTrend. In addition to its planes and trucks, Amazon now also has package-sorting hubs located in airports in the United States and one in Leipzig, Germany, as well as new warehouses. These many changes signal not only Amazon’s overall growth as a company but also its shipping capabilities, a long-term commitment to cargo transportation, and a move away from third-party contractors.

The National Transportation Safety Board is a small independent federal agency enacted by Congress on April Fools’ Day 1967.  But don’t let the date fool you — the NTSB is no joke. Its mission is saving lives through intensive investigation and the issuance of safety recommendations, not just for aviation accidents, but for all modes of transportation, including car safety.

The National Transportation Safety Board has investigated every civil aviation accident since its inception in 1967. It also probes significant highway, rail, pipeline, and HAZMAT accidents. And the agency has performed over 150,000 aviation and surface transport investigations and issued more than 15,000 safety recommendations to date, outgoing NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt wrote on the NTSB Safety Compass blog.

Changes resulting from NTSB investigations include aircraft floor-level escape lighting, emergency position-beacons in marine vessels, raising the drinking age to 21, and lowering the blood alcohol content to .05. Other recommended safety initiatives include new passenger rail transit safety standards and the pipeline one-number call system, which famously initiated the now-coined phrase “Look before you dig.”

Most critical on this year’s NTSB to-do list is to improve rail worker safety by reducing ambiguity in rail safety regulations to eliminate risk in the industry. Continuing initiatives will be aviation terrain avoidance and warning system requirements so that crashes, such as the one that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter, can be avoided.

The NTSB’s modus operandi

The NTSB usually stays on the site of an accident for five to 10 days. Many investigators are veterans in their field and have investigative and regulatory experience.

In every probe, the agency undertakes substantive qualitative and quantitative analyses, Lexology reports. All evidence must be meticulously preserved. Not only must the accident site be thoroughly examined, but documents and photos must also be harvested, interviews conducted, and every detail vetted in accordance with state and federal laws. After the initial investigation is complete, the factual phase begins. This includes lab testing, more documentation, and interviews regarding all accident and safety protocols. This can take up to 18 months to complete and must be vetted and signed off by all involved parties.

After the factual phase comes the analysis. Analyzing all the data can take up to a year before the NTSB releases a probable cause and recommendations. Every accident investigation is generally completed within one or two years.

What’s next for the NTSB?

The agency, post-Trump and after the pandemic, won’t change much except for the chairman. The White House announced President Joe Biden’s intended nomination of Jennifer Homendy for NTSB chair on May 19. All National Transportation Safety Board chairs require years of transportation and logistical experience, as well as experience with the NTSB board. According to Sumwalt, many NTSB employees have been with the agency for over 40 years. He said that along with that longevity come talent and dedication to get the job done without complacency.

As for future investigations, the NTSB will continue its current mode of operations. This includes not only its investigations but also conducting special transportation studies and coordinating with other federal agencies and organizations to help families affected by major transportation accidents.

Looking even further ahead

The NTSB’s mission is more critical than ever. With cybercrimes becomes more sophisticated in their penetration of aviation and transportation entities, the call for investigators within those fields is crucial. A recent Wall Street Journal article pondered the need for an NTSB specializing in cybersecurity, calling on the Biden administration to model a cyber safety board after the current NTSB.
