The big Stellantis electrification awakening took place today with a news dump of EV info for just about every brand under their corporate tent. A lot of it was predictable because the folks in Auburn Hills are a bit late to the game. But that’s OK. Still, Stellantis had to throw some red meat into the mix. A tease of an unidentified white Chrysler concept SUV/crossover was worked into the day’s festivities.

Let’s try and figure what the mystery Chrysler concept started as

Mystery Chrysler Stellantis EV concept | Stellantis

So let’s figure out what it might be, shall we? We need to start with some givens and work our way quickly to an answer. First, none of the manufacturers do concepts like they used to. The full-on, scratch-built stuff ground to a halt in the early 2000s. Now, every concept starts out as something coming down the line.

The talented designers will fake you with futuristic front ends and rear fascias. There will be 30-inch tall wheels on hyper-low profile tires, and interiors so modern we won’t see them in our lifetimes. But the basic shells, platforms, and inner structures are pre-production something.

These days the EV concepts have to be zoomy but based in reality

The concepts are just disguised to give you a nudge toward the inevitable production version. It gives the companies something zoomy to show off. And it might leave its impression in your mind should you actually buy one in a couple of years.

Now, Stellantis was made up of a bunch of European companies that all have EVs in the works pre-Chrysler merger. And they are fairly far along in their development. We’re talking about Citroen, Peugeot, Opel, and so on.

Stellantis has too many choices for designers to start their Chrysler concepts with

Citroen C5 X EV

So there is no way that the Chrysler arm of this combined venture will develop something from scratch. There are too many choices to start with that Americans know nothing about. So the goal is to pick one and then make it look like a concept. And then we have some fun and entertain what the concept started as.

In looking at what Stellantis was pre-Chrysler, we have a lot to choose from. So we have to look at proportions, wheelbases, beltlines, and profiles. And they have to have an electric platform, even if it is experimental and not exactly developed for production.

The one we think syncs up most to the mystery concept is a Citroen C5 X

Once you start eyeballing the choices, there is one that syncs up with the mystery white EV concept. To our eyes, the mystery Chrysler EV began as a Citroen C5 X. Sure, a lot of the details are different. And definitely the front and rear are nothing like the Citroen.

But that is all stuff you can clay up in the studio. Then they splash molds and screw them onto your base Citroen. They can peel off the production sheetmetal and dig in on the obfuscation.

Are we spitballing? Yeah, we are. We have no inside information. The Stellantis people would be crazy to let MotorBiscuit Biscuits into their design studios.

We hope you enjoyed this concept-identifying game

Still, it’s fun to speculate on 1) what it is, and 2) what it might have begun as. Because the days of ground-up, scratch-built concepts are unfortunately part of the past. The suits want to know that there is some semblance of reality and not some blue-sky nonsense.

If and when there are more “concepts” to decipher we’ll do another version of this exercise. But in the meantime, when a concept does pop up look for signs of its pre-production origins. It’s a fun game we like to play around here.

Most people try to avoid cars with air conditioning issues for obvious reasons. As cars age, the air conditioning units tend to work harder and produce fewer results. Consumer Reports gathered some of the used cars with air conditioning units that owners complained about the most. These problems can include a refrigerant leak, blower motor issue, or even a defective condenser. The cars on this list are still fairly new but required costly repairs out of warranty.

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 was, and still is, a popular SUV for drivers. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports says it is one of the cars with air conditioning issues. This usually occurs fairly early on, between 23,000 and 59,000 miles in. The issue presented itself in the 2016-2017 model years.

When rated by Consumer Reports, the air conditioning issues were just one of the many reported problems. It received two out of five for reliability and three out of five for owner satisfaction. It also has two recalls.

Another SUV on the list is the 2013 Buick Enclave. The air conditioning issues tended to show up later into ownership, around 61,000 – 102,000 miles. Owners reported the issue in the 2013, 2014, and 2015 years for the Enclave.

An unexpected car with air conditioning issues is the 2016 Honda Civic

Consumer Reports noted that the 2016 Honda Civic started having issues between 30,000 and 53,000 miles. This usually occurred with the 2016-2017 Civics. When reviewed by Consumer Reports, the Civic has fairly average scores. It received a two out of five for both reliability and owner satisfaction. It also has three open recalls for various issues.

The 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe suffered a similar fate. The air conditioning issues presented themselves between 59,000 and 92,000 miles. For the most part, the 2013-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe was the only SUV mentioned.

The 2014 Chevrolet Traverse and 2015 GMC Acadia made the list

The 2014 Chevrolet Traverse had a similar fate when rated by Consumer Reports. It received underwhelming reliability and owner satisfaction coupled with five recalls. The air conditioning issues presented themselves in the 2014-2015 model years. Between 57,000 and 87,000 miles, owners noted the air conditioning started acting up. Requiring a repair at 57,000 miles is far too soon.

One of the earlier cars on the list to have issues was the 2015 GMC Acadia. Acadia owners reported needing an air conditioning repair between 44,000 and 79,000 miles. This also impacted a range of years, from 2013 to 2016 models. The SUV has a low reliability score and a low owner satisfaction score, which sounds about right for this issue.

While buyers might find a good deal on some of these used cars, some vehicles might be more trouble than necessary. As always, when buying a used car, getting a Certified Pre-Ownes vehicle or a pre-purchase inspection is a good idea. Don’t get stuck with one of these cars with air conditioning issues, especially during the summer.

It may have launched an electric sub-brand and its first adventure bike, but Harley-Davidson isn’t done releasing new motorcycles quite yet. For one, Harley-Davidson recently unveiled a limited-edition Revival of the classic Electra Glide. And soon, it’s going to show off something that’s been teased and rumored for quite some time. Whether it’ll be named Nightster, Sportster, Custom 1250, or something else, it’s going to be Harley-Davidson’s new global motorcycle.

This new Harley-Davidson motorcycle is likely a production-ready version of the Custom 1250 concept

A few years ago, Harley-Davidson showed off several concept motorcycles that it eventually planned to put into production. Subsequent fiscal and corporate issues meant these bikes’ futures were in jeopardy. However, after the turmoil settled, it turned out that Harley would build some of these motorcycles after all. One of those bikes was the Pan America. And the other was the Custom 1250.

Since then, there haven’t been many concrete details released about the production version of the Harley-Davidson Custom 1250 motorcycle. And technically, Harley hasn’t officially confirmed that such a bike is coming. However, the company did recently release a rather telling teaser image, shown below.

A close-up of the upcoming black-and-gold Harley-Davidson motorcycle's fuel tank, engine, and exhaust pipes

This teaser image shows a close-up of a bike’s engine, exhaust pipes, and fuel tank. And although the color scheme is slightly different, the motorcycle looks similar to the Harley-Davidson Custom 1250, Cycle World notes. Also, the engine cover says ‘1250 Revolution Max,’ which is the name of the Pan America’s liquid-cooled V-twin engine. And when it was first revealed, Harley intended for the Custom 1250 to use the same engine as the Pan America.

Hence, it appears this motorcycle will be a production version of the 2018 Harley-Davidson Custom 1250 concept. But there’s still the question of its name.

Will this new motorcycle replace the Harley-Davidson Sportster?

Back in March 2021, trademark applications suggested that Harley-Davidson was bringing back the Nightster. That name originally appeared on a blacked-out version of the Harley-Davidson Sportster that ran from 2007-2012. And the applications’ timing suggested that the upcoming Custom 1250 would use the Nightster name.

But while that might still be the case, it’s also possible that this new global Harley-Davidson motorcycle could replace the current Sportster. Perhaps not initially, RevZilla muses, but maybe somewhere down the line. Or Harley could sell it alongside the current Sportster models at the very least.

These notions aren’t necessarily idle speculation, though. As Motorcycle News points out, all Harley-Davidson Sportsters use the air-cooled Evolution V-twin. And in its press release, Harley refers to this new bike’s reveal event as “From Evolution to Revolution.” Combine that with the teaser image, and it suggests that the Sportster is ditching the Evolution engine for the Revolution V-twin.

Plus, Harley-Davidson has strong financial reasons to give the Sportster that liquid-cooled V-twin. Although the Harley stills the Sportster in the US, it’s dead overseas because the Evolution engine couldn’t meet Euro5 emissions regulations. Those same regulations also claimed the Street 750 and 500, Harley-Davidson’s cheapest motorcycles. That leaves Harley with no entry-level models outside of the US, which is an untenable position.

Also, the Harley-Davidson Sportster has a notable American rival: the liquid-cooled Indian Scout. Giving the Sportster a liquid-cooled engine would truly level the playing field between the two bikes. Or, seeing as the Pan America’s 1250cc Revolution Max V-twin makes 150 hp, could let the Harley pull ahead.

We won’t have to wait long to find out

While there aren’t many specific details about this new Harley-Davidson motorcycle available right now, there will be soon. Harley plans on revealing this new bike online on July 13, 2021, at 10 am CDT. Interested parties can sign up on the company’s website.

There’s a lot that’s still unknown about this upcoming bike. But Harley’s livestream will undoubtedly have more than a few eyes on it.
