ATVs can provide drivers with off-roading thrills. Four-wheelers also have practical uses, like plowing snow and doing farming chores. And some states don’t even require all-terrain vehicles to be registered or riders to have a driver’s license.

However, this also means some parents let their children ride ATVs with minimal supervision. But remember that they’re still motor vehicles, so riders should take safety precautions. If not, your child could meet the same fate as the boy in the heartbreaking story below.

Are ATV accidents on the rise?

According to Today, several studies point to a lack of ATV safety training in drivers under 18. Over a period of 36 years, 15,744 children have lost their lives due to four-wheeler accidents. A separate study reported that 31 children are admitted to hospitals every day for ATV-related head or neck injuries.

Tragically, 20 percent of the children were younger than 16 at the time of their deaths. The vast majority of these riders also weren’t wearing helmets. In fact, the most dangerous day for all-terrain vehicle riding is July 4. This is probably due to high traffic and holiday festivities, which might distract guardians from enforcing ATV safety rules.

The ATV accident that changed a family forever

Eleven-year-old Logan Almer was tragically killed when his family’s ATV crushed him on Memorial Day weekend 2013. The vehicle flipped on top of him after he turned sharply to avoid rolling into traffic. Almer wasn’t wearing safety equipment, likely contributing to his fatal injuries, Today reported.

Logan’s older brother was enrolled in an ATV safety course at the time of the accident, an excellent example to follow. These vehicles are easy to use, which makes them appealing to kids. However, children lack the knowledge and experience to operate any motor vehicle as safely as adults.

Some parents also worry that four-wheelers are too hazardous for children to ride at all. Recently, one dangerously fast ATV was recalled for exceeding the speed limit deemed safe for children. Vehicles marketed to children 6 years or older should never exceed 15 mph.

Even so, kids far below the age of 16 generally lack the advanced motor function and strength to handle these vehicles. Logan’s caution when approaching the road ultimately didn’t save him for that reason. Regardless of your child’s age, it’s never safe to ride an ATV without a helmet.

How to stay safe on four-wheelers

Even if you’re over 16, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes a few precautions that everyone should follow. Always wear safety equipment, including a helmet, boots, and gloves. Also, you should never ride on paved roads or try to accommodate passengers on vehicles designed for one.

In addition, you should never drink alcohol before operating an all-terrain vehicle. The CPSC also recommends reading about your state’s local ATV regulations before riding.

Furthermore, children and teens should follow some additional rules, according to TeensHealth. Avoid riding at night, and don’t ride three-wheeled vehicles. Plus, kids should ride only ATVs made for their appropriate age group. And they should wear the proper safety equipment, long sleeves, and pants.

Kids are also discouraged from giving passengers a ride, even on ATVs equipped to do so. Even careful drivers might get injured, so basic first-aid knowledge is highly recommended.

Last, young riders should stick with designated trails and always adhere to the posted speed limits. Anyone younger than 16 should never go riding without adult supervision.

News has leaked that there will be a Lexus version of the Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZ coupe. But it won’t share the looks of those two siblings. It will have its own widebody and share LC500 looks shrunk down.

This smaller coupe would expand the Lexus RC and LC coupe family

Speculation of small Lexus coupe | spyder7

Lexus currently has both the LC and smaller RC coupes. This latest GR86-based model will be smaller, with the LC at the top and RC between the bookends. While the current GR86 is almost 168-inches long, the Lexus version is expected to be slightly longer at 177+ inches.

Power will come from a 2.4-liter four-cylinder plus an electric motor plug-in hybrid. At this stage, it is unknown if a manual transmission will be offered. Inside, a new-generation multimedia system will be employed. The interior is also expected to use higher-quality materials in keeping with the Lexus reputation.

Clean design and a prominent side diffuser are the small Lexus coupe’s highlights

Information put together by the Japanese site spyder7 includes this rendering of what the new Lexus is expected to look like. Lexus cues have been added to the GR86/BRZ silhouette. The sides remain clean while a prominent diffuser aims air to the tires.

Wheel openings are more prominent and a two-stage diffuser in front ties in with the hourglass Lexus grille. The headlights show a triple projector and an LED position lamp. There is enough deviation from the GR86/BRZ design to make for its own powerful look.

Speculation of what the coupe will be called centers around “UC”

There is also speculation that Lexus will call it “UC” to go with the LC and RC coupes. The “U” is said to stand for “urban” or city. At this stage, it is not known when the small Lexus coupe will make its debut. We would think that since the platform already exists that it would possibly show up this time next year as a 2023 model.

Toyota and Subaru could only make a business case for the GR86/BRZ coupes by sharing development costs. But adding Lexus to the amortization of those costs reduces even more of Toyota’s exposure. In this time of truck and SUV domination, it is great seeing a new coupe on the horizon.

Whoop whoop, that’s the sound of the police! But you might see a 2021 Ford F-150 in your rearview mirror instead of a police car. The Ford F-150 Police Responder could be the fastest new police vehicle on the market.

According to Motor Authority, the 2021 Ford F-150 Police Responder is blazing through tests to serve as the fastest police vehicle available. It’s being tested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).

During testing, the Ford F-150 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and reached a quarter-mile in 14.44 seconds at 98.19 mph. A Dodge Charger with the 5.7-liter V8 engine went from 0 to 60 in 6.5 seconds with a quarter-mile time of 14.85 seconds at 99.9 mph.

Usually, Michigan State Police Tests are used as the benchmark for police cars, but according to a spokesperson, Lori Dougoviot, the latest report hasn’t been released to the public. Ford claims preliminary results show the F-150 as the fastest option.

Ford mentions that the results show a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds, which is 1.2 seconds faster than the 2020 F-150. It’s also about 0.4 seconds quicker than every other vehicle tested.

The F-150 recorded a 0-100 mph time of 13.7 seconds too, which is 3.7 seconds faster than the outgoing model and 0.8 seconds faster than the best competitor. Michigan State Police testing confirmed that the 2021 F-150 has a top speed of 120 mph. This is 15 mph than before.

How does the F-150 achieve these speeds?

The 2021 Ford F-150 Police Responder is powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine with 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and the standard four-wheel drive includes a torque-on-demand transfer case without low range.

This truck has a standard towing capacity of 7,000 lbs, but it can be upgraded to 11.200 lbs. It can also carry a payload of up to 2,030 lbs. This is plenty of power for hauling the bad guys to jail.

With the 3.5-liter engine, Ford provided a better performance during the 32-lap handling tests conducted by the LASD and Michigan State Police. The 2021 model shaved 5.8 seconds off the 2020 model’s average lap time in the Michigan test and 3.6 seconds in the LASD test. The LASD test is conducted with 400 lb of payload to simulate cargo.

What comes with the F-150 Police Responder?

The 2021 Ford F-150 Police Responder is a four-door SuperCrew cab model with the FX4 off-road package. It’s being built in the Ford Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri. Deliveries to government fleets will begin this fall.

With the FX4 package, you get an electronic-locking rear differential that completely locks the rear axle. You also get hill descent control, off-road tuned shock absorbers, and skid plates. The 360-degree camera with a split-view display helps you navigate through tight areas.

You better drive on your best behavior because it will be hard to get away from the new F-150 Police Responder. We really hope to see this beast in action once it begins to be delivered in the fall.
