ATVs aren’t quite the hazards they once were when three-wheelers were all the rage. Now, all-terrain vehicles have become a bit safer. But they’re still not immune to accidents, especially when kids are involved. In fact, 73 children under the age of 16 died in 2015 due to ATV accidents, some because they weren’t wearing protective gear, the American Academy of Pediatrics reports.

But ensuring your kids wear the proper helmets, over-the-ankle shoes, long sleeves, pants, and goggles will keep them safer on ATVs. You can also help them stay safe by teaching them to avoid doing these three dangerous things.

The 3 most dangerous things kids should never do on ATVs

Adults get injured while riding four-wheelers, but when you add young kids to the mix, it can get even more dangerous. About 30 percent of ATV-related deaths happen to young children. There are plenty of things kids should never do on these vehicles, but the three most dangerous involve adding a passenger, not wearing proper safety equipment, and riding on an adult-sized ATV.

All-terrain vehicles are built for one passenger only. Children driving one should never try to bring a friend with them. Adding a second person can throw off the vehicle’s balance, which can lead to loss of control, rollovers, and serious or fatal injuries.

Another mistake some kids have made is failing to wear safety equipment when operating ATVs. According to Today, an 11-year-old died after taking his family’s ATV for a ride. He wasn’t wearing protective equipment and had no supervision. Also, the vehicle was too big for his size. When he sharply turned to avoid driving into the road, the machine rolled twice, crushing him.

Kids should always operate ATVs designed for their stature. A child trying to ride an adult-sized unit is a disaster in the making. The machine is too heavy and harder for children to control, and it can cause much more damage if an accident occurs.

Which type of ATVs should your kids use?

Adult-sized ATVs, such as the Polaris Sportsman 450, are meant for adults, who are larger and weigh more than young children. Teenagers aged 16 and up can use adult-sized machines, but younger kids shouldn’t even try. In fact, manufacturers make ATVs specifically for young kids.

Children aged 12 to 15 can ride one that’s 70 to 90cc, close to an adult-sized model but can travel only around 15 to 30 mph. Kids aged 6 to 11 should ride one that’s under 70cc, which usually travels around 10 to 15 mph. The slower speeds allow for better control, but other precautions are still necessary.

Kids should also drive ATVs with a single-speed automatic transmission, PennState Extension explains. Parents can also limit the speed using controls. Plus, there are remote shutoff devices, exhaust restrictors, and even throttle limiters to keep kids safe while they practice riding skills.

Safety rules kids should always follow

Each state has its own set of rules that you and your kids will need to follow when riding ATVs. But as a good rule of thumb, your kids can follow certain safety practices every time they get on the vehicle.

They should make sure they’re always wearing protective clothing and a helmet with a face shield every time they ride an ATV. Also, they should operate it with adult supervision. Supervisors can view potential obstacles and alert the child to them before an accident happens.

Though children under 6 years old shouldn’t ride ATVs, companies such as Polaris make toy versions to help youngsters prepare for bigger machines later. Those who are older can get in on the fun by operating their own machines. You just have to make sure they’re driving a four-wheeler that’s the right size and wear the required safety equipment.

If you’re looking for a compact pickup that can tow a boat, save on gas, and won’t break the bank, the 2022 Ford Maverick might fit the bill. Buzz and excitement have surrounded Ford’s first fully hybrid truck, and car enthusiasts are champing at the bit to see if it lives up to the hype. But as far as the Maverick’s ground clearance goes, that will depend upon whether you choose front-wheel- or all-wheel-drive.

The Ford Maverick’s performance expectations

The Ford Maverick’s base powertrain comprises a 2.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder and an electric motor producing 191 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque with FWD. It has an optional AWD drivetrain with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder harnessing 250 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The FWD engine mates with a continuously variable transmission, and the AWD pairs with an eight-speed automatic.

According to Ford, the 2022 Maverick hybrid will have an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 40/33/37 mpg city/highway/combined and can travel 500 miles on a single tank. The automaker hasn’t released the AWD engine’s EPA ratings yet.

Ford also says the 4.5-foot steel bed, which expands to six feet with the tailgate open, can haul 1,500 pounds. Depending upon the powertrain, the Maverick can tow 2,000 pounds, or if you add the 4K Tow package to the AWD EcoBoost, it can tow 4,000 pounds. The 4K package also includes a hitch with a seven-pin connector, a transmission oil cooler, an upgraded radiator and cooling fan, a shorter final drive ratio, and a trailer brake controller. The truck’s bed is also designed to support multiple modular configurations. And expect two 12-volt prewired power sources in the bed.

Ground clearance differs between FWD and AWD models

The Maverick is another game-changer from Ford, this time in the compact truck segment. But just because this pickup is small doesn’t mean it can’t get the job done. However, to get the ground clearance you want, know that it differs depending upon whether you choose FWD or AWD.

Maverick models with FWD stand 8.3 inches off the ground, while models with AWD have a ground clearance of 8.6 inches. This is just a little less than the Bronco Sport Badlands, with 8.8 inches of ground clearance, MotorTrend reports.

How much does the 2022 Ford Maverick cost, and when will it come out?

The inaugural Ford Maverick will offer three trims, along with the previously mentioned 4K Tow package. The base-model XL will start at $19,995. And the other two trims — the XLT and Lariat — will start at $22,280 and $25,490. Also, a First Edition package is available to initial customers for $1,495, which will add unique graphics and other special touches. The first Maverick trucks are scheduled to roll out this fall, and Ford is already taking orders.

With the Maverick, the Blue Oval is definitely trying to hit give consumers’ biggest wants: fuel efficiency, power, and affordability. The automaker is also throwing in some unique features, such as two cleats in the bed that double as bottle openers, and “Ford Integrated Tether System” slots in the backseat for 3D-printing your own accessories.

So if the 2022 Maverick lives up to what it promises on paper, it could soon dominate the small truck segment and attract new buyers who had never considered purchasing a pickup. And that’s likely Ford’s goal.

Some adventurers like to explore the world from the road, but increasing numbers of gearheads are looking to the skies for their next journey. Hobby flying is nothing new. People with the means have been doing it since airplanes became a regular transportation mode. However, not everyone can afford the luxury aircraft of the rich and famous.

Flying is an expensive hobby

Like any mode of transportation, there’s a large swatch of planes to choose from, from tiny planes meant for local travel to gigantic commercial airliners that fly the globe. Though people need a decent income to take up flying, they no longer need to be multimillionaires to follow their dreams.

Insider published an article about the best aircraft that people can buy. The list doesn’t feature only cheaper airplanes — the $65 million Gulfstream G650 appears — but it doesn’t cater to only the 1 percent either. Though everyone would love a luxury Learjet or a Dassault Falcon 7X, the vast majority of the population never gets the chance.

But fortunately, there’s the Cessna Skycatcher.

The Cessna Skycatcher is an affordable private airplane

Many experts view the two-seat Cessna 162 Skycatcher as a plane with training wheels, but that isn’t bad for the up-and-coming hobbyist. Insider notes the model’s history as a training vehicle for those who want to get behind the yoke. The reasoning behind this is simple. This single-piston-engine model is user-friendly for newcomers.

With a pair of displays giving pilots most of what they need to know and instruments that are functional and easy to use, it’s no wonder this airplane became a favorite among those who want to fly but don’t yet have the hours or the deep pockets. Priced at $149,900 when it was new in 2013, it’s not a plane for everyone, but it’s more attainable now that all models are used. Furthermore, with a reliable track record, it boasts the best reviews among more affordable models.

Planes might seem like a hobby that only those who can afford a 747 can obtain, but there’s an increasing number of options for the others, too. As such, anyone who wants to fly should know they don’t need to win the lottery first. It’s not quite a used car, but those who can afford to put the money down will like what the Cessna Skycatcher offers.

How do you become a private pilot?

Of course, no one should get behind an airplane’s controls like they’re a 15-year-old with a learner’s permit. However, just like someone needs the proper training to drive a car, there’s plenty of options when it comes to air travel, as well. Aero Affaires recently interviewed private pilot François-Valery Vannimenus about becoming a private pilot.

Recalling his days as a kid, Vannimenus said he always wanted to fly among the clouds. However, while many others got their training in the air force or other military branches, Vannimunus wanted to fly but didn’t have the experience. However, many private pilots know how to fly commercial airliners, but the Vannimenus noted how different they are from private planes.

While training in his native France, he followed a similar process that American pilots follow to get his pilot license. Like a driver’s test, a written test gauged his knowledge, and a practical exam tested his actual skills. After a two-year process, Vannimenus became a private pilot. He ended his interview with a simple word of advice.

“For future pilots,” he said, “arm yourself with courage and never give up.”

A lot of car shoppers consider where the vehicle they’re considering purchasing comes from. Many Americans only look at the most American cars, or the cars they think are the most American. Yet how much do people really know about where their cars are made? And what makes a vehicle American?

Do people care about buying cars made in America?

Cars.com did a survey which found that 72% of new-car shoppers take into consideration where the car they’re buying comes from. Yet a lot of car shoppers think of the top American car names – Ford, Chevy, Dodge – and assume that they must make American cars with American parts.

However, that’s not always the case. Today, more and more car manufacturers are using parts made in different countries. Labor can also come from outside the U.S. To make matters more complicated, many car shoppers don’t really know the country of origin of some pretty big car manufacturers.

In order to rank the most “American” cars, Cars.com compiled some information about all of the vehicles, like where their parts came from. To be more specific, the label states whether the parts come from the U.S. and Canada. It’s important to note that Cars.com gathered this information from the Monroney labels, which includes Canada in its American parts category.

Cars.com also used information about U.S. factory employment, as well as where engines and transmissions come from. It did not include vehicles with small production numbers, fleet-only vehicles, and vehicles in their last year of production. Let’s take a look at the top 10 most American vehicles, measured by their production location.

Honda Pilot

The largest SUV from Honda, the Honda Pilot is also manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama.

Honda Passport

Like its Honda brethren, the Passport is also produced in Alabama.
