There is nothing quite as annoying as having an old, rusted lawn mower deck. At the same time, it seems to be an experience most people have in their time owning a lawn mower, and it takes a lot of care and effort to prevent it. Storing your lawn mower in a dry, clean shed can be a great way to prevent rust, but it isn’t an option for every lawn mower owner. Rinsing it off after use also isn’t a bad idea, but if it is going to continue to sit outside in the elements, buying a cover is the only solution. If you’re sick of staring at a rusted lawn mower deck and want a quick repair that you can get done in a weekend and get back to mowing your lawn, these easy steps from NAPA will cost you only a little bit of money and time.

Remove dirt, grass, and whatever gunk has been stuck on the mower deck for years

The first step seems simple, but after hours in the heat mowing the lawn, it’s also the easiest to ignore. Removing the dirt, grass, oil, and whatever gunk has made its home on the lawn mower deck is essential for deck maintenance, but also the first step to seeing just how bad the damage actually is. Using some water, a degreaser, and a wire brush, you can remove just about anything off of the surface. Be sure to use the wire brush to remove big chunks of rust and surface rust, and clear the area of residual paint to ensure that the new layer of paint will adhere well to the surface.

Analyze the damage on the lawn mower deck

Rust can be annoying and cosmetic, but it can also cause structural damage too. Once you’ve cleaned off the dirt and debris, take a moment to check out how extensive the rust damage is. Surface damage can be easily revived, giving you a lawn mower deck that looks almost as good as new, but giant holes and spots that have been rusted through will need replacing.

This is the part where you need to be realistic about how the rest of this process is going to go, or you might find yourself frustrated with the results. While you can patch holes that have rusted through the lawn mower deck, this will requiring welding in new metal, and if you don’t have the tools and skills to do that at home, there is little point in attempting to make a major repair. For the purposes of the next few steps, it is important to note that this process will only resolve non-structural rusting that is cosmetic. It is still worth doing if you decide you don’t want to replace the deck lid because it will neutralize the rust and prevent it from spreading and causing further damage.

Spray rust converter and paint

If you’ve never used a rust converter before, I promise it will change your life. Not in any big ways, of course, but the product itself is really cool. Rust converted neutralizes the rust — which, it does in a complicated chemistry-based way. The rust converter doesn’t take long to work, and it will actually change the color of the metal in any place there is rust present. Once the surface is dry, you can prep it for paint and cover it in a few layers of your new paint of choice.

Once again, it is important to assess the damage and problems created by the rust to ensure you aren’t wasting your time. Replacing your lawn mower deck can also sometimes be an option, but if removing and repairing rust can be done, you can expect to save big by following these tips. With just a few products you can find at your local hardware or auto parts store, you can get your lawn mower deck looking almost as good as new, without braking the bank on replacing major parts — or even more expensive, your entire lawn mower.

On paper, Consumer Reports didn’t love the 2021 Jeep Gladiator. It lacks some safety features that other trucks offer standard, but it still made the list of most satisfying new trucks. Why do critics and owners disagree on this compact pickup truck?

Is the 2021 Jeep Gladiator worth buying?

Consumer Reports Doesn’t Like the 2021 Jeep Gladiator | Jeep

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator was ranked second on the list of compact pickup trucks. Consumer Reports gave the Gladiator a perfect score for the predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction. It scored a 52 on the road test and received a score of 65 overall. Consumer Reports doesn’t love the Jeep brand overall, so this is actually a good score for the brand.

The Gladiator has many safety features, optional but is lacking in standard features. These include blind-spot warning, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. CR notes that the overall fuel economy was 18 mpg. For the city, the Gladiator only got 13 mpg and 23 mpg on the highway.

The Gladiator has a best-in-class towing capacity of 7,650 pounds and a best-in-class 4×4 1,700-pound payload. This was one of the highs noted, along with the character the Jeep offers.

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator was still pretty satisfying

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator made the list of Consumer Reports Most Satisfying New Pickup Trucks. There are so many trucks on the market for 2021 across various sizes and brands, but CR compiled a list of those who left owners most satisfied. “The models that top Consumer Reports’ owner satisfaction ratings deliver on manufacturer promises, whether they’re about ride quality, payload capacity, or towing performance,” Consumer Reports said.

Your average Jeep doesn’t usually qualify as a pickup truck, but the Gladiator isn’t your average Jeep. The Gladiator comes with a longer wheelbase that allows for a five-foot bed. This transforms the Jeep Wrangler into a Gladiator truck. However, there are a lot of configurations that Jeep offers buyers.

The Gladiator comes with a 3.6L V6 or a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine and has four-wheel drive on higher trim levels. The trim levels are Sport ($34,040), Willys Sport ($36,235), Sport S($39,075), and Willys ($40,430). The top trim levels are the Overland ($39,135) 80th Anniversary ($42,480), Freedom ($42,340), Mojave ($44,565), Rubicon ($44,565), and High Altitude ($52,240) are also options. That’s a lot of trim levels.

The most satisfying pickup trucks

In the areas where the Jeep Wrangler fell short, the 2021 Jeep Gladiator jumped ahead. Consumer Reports noted that the compact pickup truck category for 2021 isn’t great. The only two compact pickup trucks recommended by Consumer Reports were the 2021 Honda Ridgeline and the Gladiator.

In fact, the Ridgeline was the next truck listed as satisfying. CR noted that the Ridgeline was an owner favorite with the unibody construction, independent suspension, and locking trunk space. It even got an estimated 20 mpg overall in the testing phase, which was the highest mileage noted on the list.

While the 2021 Jeep Gladiator might not work for every occasion, it offers drivers a lot. With several trim levels and ways to customize the truck, the Gladiator might not score high on every critic’s list, but it works for the people driving it every day.

The 2020 Nissan Rogue has a new victory to celebrate against the 2020 Subaru Forester because it’s proving to be the much more popular choice. Let’s see why people are choosing the Nissan Rogue over the Subaru Forester.

2020 Nissan Rogue vs. the 2020 Subaru Forester

2020 Nissan Rogue | Nissan

According to MarketWatch, the 2020 Nissan Rogue is more popular than the 2020 Subaru Forester. On their list of the best-selling SUVs, the Subaru Forester landed in 10th place with 176,996 units sold, while the Nissan Rogue claimed fourth place with 227,935 units sold.

The insanely popular 2020 Toyota RAV4 landed in first place with 430,387 units sold, and the 2020 Chevy Blazer is currently in last place with 94,599 units sold. But we will focus on the Forester and Rogue for now.

The Forester ranks highly with its excellent off-roading capabilities and standard all-wheel drive. The ground clearance is excellent, and the SUV is still practical for daily driving. But the Rogue comes standard with advanced safety tech and driver assistance features. It’s known for being a great daily driver with an impressive cargo capacity.

Does the Rogue or Forester have a better performance?

The 2020 Nissan Rogue has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 181 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 1,102 lbs, which is enough power to haul small, lightweight boats, bikes, and trailers. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 9.8 seconds, according to MotorTrend

With the 2020 Subaru Forester, you get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 1,500 lbs, so it’s only slightly stronger than the Rogue. Also, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 9.3 seconds.

The Nissan Rogue gets an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and up to 33 mpg on the highway. The Subaru Forester has the same EPA-estimated fuel economy. Wow, these SUVs are neck and neck.

Both options are known for having a sluggish acceleration with respectable handling and confident braking. The Subaru is a bit sportier but may have more wind noise. The Rogue may have a smoother ride over rough areas of the road. You can add intelligent all-wheel drive to the Rogue, but it’s standard with the Forester.

Does the Forester or Rogue have better features?

A white 2020 Subaru Forester compact SUV parked outside a log cabin overlooking mountains on a sunny day
2020 Subaru Forester | Subaru of America, Inc.

You can get started in a 2020 Nissan Rogue for about $25,490. The 2020 Subaru Forester begins at about $24,495. These prices are the MSRP before destination fees, and dealership fees have been added.

The Rogue has 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats with up to 70 cubes total. In the Forester, you get 31.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats with up to 74.3 cubes total. Both options provide plenty of space for four adults to sit comfortably.

With the Rogue, you get a 7.0-inch touchscreen. The Forester has a standard 6.5-inch display, but you can upgrade to the 8.0-inch unit. Both options come with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Forester scored a bit higher in safety rating tests. The Rogue comes with blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, rear-cross traffic alert, while the Forester provides adaptive cruise control.

Both of these options are very closely matched. The Rogue may have a more comfortable performance on the road, but the Forster is better equipped for adventures. They’re both excellent and popular choices to consider test driving.
