A pre-purchase inspection is one of the most important aspects of car buying. It’s the most surefire way to make sure you’re getting what the seller advertises. A pre-purchase inspection will cost you money upfront, yes. But, it can also save you thousands down the road by helping to identify what issues if any your prospective purchase has. The strategy here is threefold. First, know what shops to look for. Knowing what questions to ask is a great start too. Finally, use the results of your inspection to help you negotiate. Let’s get started.

What kind of shops to look for

Finding a good mechanic is hard. Luckily, the same strategy you’d use there applies rather well to finding a shop to do an inspection. If buying locally, use the shop you trust or ask around to see who’s the best. The second part of that nugget of knowledge applies to out-of-state car buying as well.

Should you be buying outside your local area, check out some reviews for the shops in the area. Enthusiast-oriented Facebook pages are a great place to ask a lot of people for their choice all at once. Once you’ve found your shop, give them a ring. Ask how much they’ll want to charge for the pre-purchase inspection (PPI for short) and what their availability is like. If buying out of your area, see if they’ll be able to pick up the vehicle in question to do the inspection.

What questions to ask during a pre-purchase inspection

Now that you have the “who” sorted, it’s time to focus on the what. Do some background research on your potential new ride. Know what issues are common and ask that they be checked for. For example, make sure the VANOS pump on that BMW M3 isn’t about to spew oil and metal all over your engine bay. Now, this next tip is one that some miss when speaking to mechanics.

According to J.D Power, it’s a good idea to find out what upcoming issues the vehicle may have. Does anything look worn? Are there signs of a botched repair? All of these things and more should be revealed by a PPI. This way, should you go through with the purchase of your vehicle, you’ll know right away what has to be done to keep it in good condition. Best of all, it’ll help you keep it in good shape for when the time to sell rolls around.

You can use a pre-purchase inspection to negotiate

The results of your pre-purchase inspection and the effect they’ll have on the pricing of your chosen vehicle can drastically affect how this shakes out for you the buyer. If you’re willing to fix an issue found during the inspection, the seller may take into consideration the money you’ll be spending and give you some wiggle room on the price. Just remember to be as kind as possible to help your chances. With these things in mind, a few hundred bucks can give you a great deal of peace of mind. Car ownership can get expensive quick, and this small act of due diligence can save thousands.

We know what you might be thinking. How could Porsche win an award for the best resale value? Well, believe it! Kelley Blue Book awarded Porsche the 2021 Best Resale Value Luxury Brand.

What Porsche has the best resale value?

Porsche Won the Best Resale Value Luxury Brand Award | Porsche

Kelley Blue Book gives out an award for cars and brands that hold value well. New cars often lose value as soon as you drive off the lot, which can cost you money in the long run. Toyota won the 2021 Best Resale Value Brands with five wins, while Porsche won the 2021 Best Resale Value Luxury Brand for the fifth time.

“That’s why choosing a vehicle with solid resale value can save you much more money in the long run. Our annual Best Resale Value Awards make it easier to find true long-term value.”

Kelley Blue Book

Porsche isn’t a one-trick pony these days. The days of the Boxster being the most popular Porsche on the roads are long gone. Porsche has an extensive lineup these days, and the resale market agrees. Kelley Blue Book notes that the addition of the Macan in the compact luxury SUV segment helped a bit. In addition, the large luxury SUV category saw the likes of the Cayenne.

The Macan came in first in its category, while the Cayenne came in second for its category. The Porsche 911 came in third among the luxury sedan category, and the new Taycan placed third in the electric vehicle category. The 2021 Porsche 718 Cayman is fairly new, but critics and owners alike love it.

How do Porsche vehicles hold value?

Since Porsche isn’t necessarily a high-production brand, there aren’t enough cars on the road to drive value down. Porsche will open pre-orders for a popular vehicle like the 911 GT3 Touring and have to turn people away at some point.

Cars like the 718 Cayman GT4 will have far more interest than production. The GT4 has a top speed of 189 mph with a manual transmission and a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds. For the automatic, the top speed is 188 mph, and the 0-60 mph time is 3.7 seconds. The max power came in at 414 hp from the naturally aspirated boxer-six engine. It starts at $101,200 and, for most people, is out of real. Buying one used doesn’t get any better!

The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 starts at $87,400 for the manual and goes up to $91,130 for the automatic. This version gets 394 hp and has a 0-60 mph time of 4.3 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package. Porsche has a pretty large lineup this year and doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

What other brands won?

Volvo picked up an award for the Best Subcompact Luxury SUV with the XC40. The 2021 Range Rover Sport won the award for best two-row Midsize Luxury SUV. The 2021 BMW X7 took home the resale value award for the best three-row Midsize Luxury SUV from the BMW corner.

As far as Best Full-Size Luxury SUV? The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class won that category. Lexus took home two awards for the 2021 Lexus IS with the Best Entry-Level Luxury Car and the 2021 Lexus LS with Best Luxury Car.

Overall, these awards from Kelley Blue Book are a good sign if you own one. If you are looking for a good deal on a used car, do some extra research before purchasing. If you do buy a used Porsche, you can bet it will be easy enough to sell again once you are done with it.

In a 2016 accident involving a Lexus, two children sustained lasting traumatic brain injuries. A court found Toyota guilty of gross negligence after the family sued, but the automaker appealed. And recently, a Texas appellate court upheld the judgment, saying Toyota must still pay $242 million in punitive damages. However, the automaker confirms it will take its case to the state’s supreme court.

A 2016 Lexus crash changed a family forever

In September 2016, Benjamin and Kristi Reavis were traveling south on North Central Expressway in Dallas. Their small children — 3-year-old Owen and 5-year-old Emily — sat secured in car seats in the back of the family’s 2002 Lexus ES300. As they drove home from church, another car rear-ended their sedan at 45 mph.

Upon impact, the sedan’s front seats bent backward, throwing Benjamin and Kristi out of their seatbelts and launching them headfirst into their children. The duo made head-to-head contact with Own and Emily, causing severe head and brain injuries to the kids, Yahoo! Finance reported.

Their lawsuit claimed ‘gross negligence’

In a lawsuit against Toyota, which owns Lexus, the family blamed front-seat engineering faults on the seatback issue. And in 2018, a Texas jury awarded the Reavises $242 million after finding Toyota Motor Corporation guilty of gross negligence.

The jury concluded that the defects in the 2002 Lexus ES’s front seats caused the children’s injuries. In addition, the jury found that the seats were dangerous and that the automaker failed to warn consumers about them.

Toyota appealed the case, but the Dallas Fifth Court of Appeals recently upheld the 2018 personal-injury verdict. The court found the arguments and evidence provided by the Reavis family substantial enough to support gross negligence. According to the evidence the family presented, Toyota made an engineering decision to protect front-seat passengers but not rear-seat occupants.

Morning Star reported that the automaker failed to perform crash tests despite glaring evidence that such collisions were reported 77,000 times a year. In the court’s eyes, this amounted to gross negligence. The ruling came as a relief to Benjamin and Kristi, who stressed that the accident would not have occurred if Toyota had engineered their car’s front seats properly

How far will Toyota go to fight the ‘entirely improper’ ruling?

Toyota is considering its next steps following the February 14, 2021 ruling, CBS News reported. The automaker argues that the collapse of the Lexus ES300‘s front seats was due to the nature of the collision, not an engineering or design issue. Toyota contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is awaiting a response.

According to CBS News, the NHTSA said the problem of collapsing front seats is underreported. The agency admitted it lacks jurisdiction and compelling evidence to take action against Toyota. Examining over 100 cases, the Reavis family’s lawyers argue that seatback collapses have caused injuries and deaths, with children suffering the most.

Asked for comment on the appeals court’s ruling, the automaker told MotorBiscuit: “Toyota is committed to providing its customers with safe and reliable transportation, and we sympathize with anyone in an accident involving one of our vehicles.

“While we respect the 2-1 decision of the Court, we continue to believe that the judgment is entirely improper given the undisputed facts that the 2002 Lexus ES300 meets or exceeds federal safety standards and that the accident itself was caused by a distracted driver whose SUV rear-ended the Reavis’ car at nearly 50 mph,” Toyota added.

“This case presents a number of important legal issues in Texas, as noted by the dissenting judge who found the plaintiffs’ claims ‘unsustainable.’ We look forward to presenting our case to the Texas Supreme Court for consideration.”
