Automakers are constantly upgrading car safety systems to keep drivers secure. But one simple safety feature is hazard lights. They alert drivers to a disabled vehicle or other potential hazards. And in some states, motorists use hazard lights during heavy rainfall so that others can better see them.

Although flashers can help prevent car accidents, some states don’t allow them in inclement weather. Florida was one until recently. In fact, the Sunshine State will soon allow drivers to use hazard lights in the rain despite some lawmakers’ protests.

Is using hazard lights when driving in the rain dangerous?

Several years ago, the Miami Herald published an article advising Florida drivers to stop using their hazard lights in the rain.

The newspaper quoted AAA as saying hazard lights should be used only “when you have pulled over to the side of the road or are disabled or in an accident.” It added, “You cannot use them when you’re moving. It only causes confusion. Other drivers have no idea what you’re doing.”

A Florida Highway Patrol officer said, “If your lights are indicating some kind of emergency, the drivers following you don’t know whether to slam on the brakes or swerve around you. You may think you’re being cautious, but you’ve misinterpreted the purpose of hazard lights.”

When can Florida drivers begin using their hazard lights in the rain?

According to WSVN, in 2015, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles warned drivers, “If driving in the rain is too dangerous, pull off the road. DO NOT activate hazard lights while still traveling.”

Despite prior guidance, state legislators recently amended the transportation bill. And as of July 1, Florida motorists will be allowed to use their flashers while driving in the rain.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, this new law applies only “on roads with speed limits at or above 55 mph when the conditions create ‘extremely low visibility.'”

Florida Sen. Ed Hooper is responsible for this sudden law change. A retired firefighter, he said, “There’s been many times you’re driving, and you’ve got the death grip on the wheel, you’re doing 30 mph on the highway, and you can’t see anything in front or behind you, and you’re not really sure where you can pull over.”

Rep. Matt Willhite opposed the change, saying, “It just seems silly that we’re legitimizing or legalizing what’s against the law currently just because people get nervous driving.” He added, “Maybe we shouldn’t call them ‘hazard lights.’ We can rename them ‘I’m a scared driver; I don’t want to follow the law.'”

Since July 1, 2018, 460 citations have been issued to Florida drivers for improper use of flashing lights.

Other states that allow their use

When it comes to traffic laws, every state is different. Each department of motor vehicles oversees the driving rules and regulations.

In states like Louisiana, using hazard lights when driving in the rain is against the law. Instead, the state recommends using flashers only when a vehicle is on the shoulder or disabled on a roadway.

According to AAA, only 10 states prohibit the use of hazard lights when driving in the rain.

States that permit the use of flashers while driving include Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Wyoming.

The remaining states have exceptions to the rules, allowing hazard lights only in certain circumstances.

Large cars can be the happy medium between a big, bulky SUV and small, cramped sedan. In fact, the top-rated large cars combined luxury, performance, and style, giving you the best of not just two worlds, but three. According to Kelley Blue Book, some of the top-rated large cars might surprise you, while either might not. Either way, if you’re looking to make a compromise, these large cars certainly won’t leave you disappointed.

With a starting MSRP of $36,870, the 2021 Toyota Avalon is the top-rated large car among vehicles ranked by Kelley Blue Book. The latest generation was completely revamped to offer luxury you would expect from much more expensive vehicles, and a high-quality driving experience to match. This model year for the large car is sleek, featuring smooth body lines and modern detailing that makes the Avalon stand out from the lower models from Toyota.

The 2021 Chrysler 300 is the best runner up

You might not think of the 2021 Chrysler 300 if you’re brainstorming vehicles to take for a test drive, but the 2021 Chrysler 300 came in close in the ranks with the Toyota Avalon. Modestly designed, the latest generation takes styling hints from previous years and adds a modern touch without being too flashy or over the top. It chock full of tech features, and has two optional drivetrains that might interest different buyers: both a V8 engine and V6 with all-wheel drive are available for this large car.

Up next, the 2021 Nissan Maxima

The 2021 Nissan Maxima is on the higher-end of price compared to the base model Sentra and Altima, with a starting MSRP of $38,040. The Nissan Maxima is described by the website as being “part sports sedan and part luxury car” which probably isn’t what you were expecting if you’ve never been in a Nissan Maxima before. What might surprised buyers the most is the V6 engine under the hood, which most people wouldn’t be expecting. Taking it for a test drive, you might be surprised just how much you enjoy driving this large car.

Pure, American muscle with the 2021 Dodge Charger

If you want something a bit more exciting and sporty to drive, the 2021 Dodge Charger won’t disappoint. Among the various trim levels, it is aggressively styled and surprisingly performance-oriented, especially if you upgrade to the Hellcat. If you want the enjoyment of driving a sports car but also need the extra space of easily accessed back seats and plenty of cargo capacity, this happy medium won’t leave you disappointed.

Buying a large car might seem like the best of both worlds; you get the practicality and space of having a larger vehicle, without the sheer size of driving an SUV. While SUVs have become more and more popular, it is clear that small and large cars have had to take their features and designs up a notch to stay competitive, and according to Kelley Blue Book, these three top-rated choices for large cars won’t leave you disappointed.

If you were interested in buying Revolt Motor’s RV500 motorcycle recently, you probably already know you’re out of luck. The electric motorcycle sold out completely in under two hours, leaving loads of people without a shot at buying the electric motorcycle that’s taking over India’s streets.

What is an RV400?

The RV400 is Revolt Motors’ electric motorcycle. It’s a 150cc class motorcycle with 17” wheels ready for a variety of terrain. It weighs only 238 pounds. It’s a highly sought-after electric motorcycle, as evidenced by its quick sell out time. According to Electrek, Revolt Motors sold nearly $7 million in the two hours that they had sales open for the RV400.

The RV400 has a 3 kW motor and can go up to 53 mph. It has a removable battery with 72 volts that offers 3.24 kWh. The RV400 can travel up to about 93 miles with one full charge, which isn’t bad for an electric motorcycle. If you put your RV400 in SPORT mode, you’ll lose some miles, but can still get about 50 miles from one charge.

One of the coolest things about the RV400 is the way motorcycle operators can swap out their batteries. Revolt Motors has set up stations where someone can swap their depleted battery with a fully charged one. It’s also possible to have fully charged batteries delivered to your house, for a charge, of course.

In addition to all of these features, the RV400 has keyless startup, GPS tracking, and telemetry so that RV400 owners can remotely monitor their electric motorcycle. It also has engine sounds, which help alert pedestrians to the motorcycle. Electric vehicles can be very quiet, which can be dangerous if people don’t hear them coming.

The RV400 is helped by subsidies

India has lots of motorcycles, mopeds and other two-wheeled vehicles. The government has instituted some subsidies to try to get people to buy electric motorcycles, which will not only keep traffic low, but also reduce the carbon emissions from too many cars on the roads.

The subsidy is called FAME II, and it applies to electric vehicles. FAME II makes the RV400 only RS 90,000, or $1,200. In addition to offering financial incentives to people purchasing electric vehicles, India’s government is also setting up public charging stations all over the country.

This isn’t the first time Revolt Motors motorcycles have sold out quickly

Revolt first started in 2019, and they were immediately popular. Revolt started with an interesting sales technique. Rather than straight up selling their motorcycles, they offered a monthly pricing structure, like a payment plan.

The Revolt RV400 was $50 for 37 months when it first launched. This equals $1,850. There was also an RV300 for $42 a month, or $1,554.

With the great incentive that India’s government is offering, plus all that the RV400 has to offer, it’s not a surprise that it’s been popular. What is surprising though, is that it’s selling out so quickly. Two hours is an unbelievable amount of time to completely sell out of something. It isn’t hard to imagine that Revolt Motors will make another batch available at some point in the future.

If you’re looking for a luxury SUV that performs more like a sports car, the 2022 BMW X3 M checks both boxes. The X3 is consistently one of the best luxury compact crossovers, and the upgrades to the 2022 M model look to make it one of the best-performing SUVs as well. Plus, the warranty helps make it one of the more affordable luxury SUVs to maintain. So, what upgrades did BMW make to improve the performance of the X3 M? And is it worth the price?

The 2022 BMW X3 M’s performance upgrades

With a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six harnessing 473 hp, the BMW X3 M is a little monster. For 2022, though the horsepower stays the same for the 2022 model, BMW boosted the torque from 442 to 457 lb-ft, MotorTrend reports. This increase is thanks to some engine tuning and updated internals, plus the addition of the lightweight forged crankshaft seen in the M3 and M4 models. The X3 M Competition maintains the same horsepower as well, at 503, but the torque jumps from 442 to 479 lb-ft.

This extra torque shaves a bit off the BMW X3’s 0-to-60-mph time, with the M model hitting it 4.1 seconds and the Competition hitting it in 3.9 seconds. For comparison, the Porsche 911 Targa 4 has a 0-to-60 time of 4.0 seconds. The Competition models will also sport new, lighter-weight 21-inch wheels. Both models will keep the M-specific eight-speed automatic transmission with an all-wheel drivetrain that’s a little rear-biased.

How the BMW X3 is changing in general

There are some other changes outside of the performance for the 2022 model. The X3 M comes with two 12.3-inch touchscreens, one for the infotainment system and one for the digital gauge cluster. In addition, the center console will feature the gear selector, start button, and some other fun switches from the M3 and M4 models.

The outer appearance is changing a bit as well. The grille is changing from the separate kidney-style grilles to the more familiar conjoined nostril-style grilles. The headlights, taillights, and front and rear fascias are all getting a new look, but they still will not resemble any body parts, at least not any so-called normal ones.

How much will the 2022 model cost?

Interestingly enough, one thing that isn’t changing is the base price. The 2022 X3 M will have the same starting price as the 2021 model: $70,895. BMW hasn’t released the official price for the Competition package yet, but with the base price not changing, it’s expected to stay at $7,000. Additionally, the M Driver’s package, which ups the top speed from 155 to 177 mph and gives you a full day of professional driving lessons, is expected to stay the same at $2,500.

So if you have $80,000 to spend on a sporty crossover, you’ll probably love the 2022 BMW X3 M. Most of the lucky ducks who get to test drive these for a living agree that the Competition package, as well as the M Driver’s package, are worth the extra $10,000. If you’re already willing to spend $70,000, does an extra $10,000 really make a difference? Particularly if it gets you a top speed that rivals some sports cars.
