The jury is still out on this one. Big pickup trucks have been in the news lately because trucks seem to get bigger with each passing day. However, trucks aren’t the only ones with poor visibility.

Are big trucks safer than cars?

Big trucks like the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD LT are in the news | Chevrolet

Consumer Reports recently put out a report about the hidden dangers of big trucks. The article noted that a 2020 Jeep Gladiator hit and killed a woman in New Jersey. The driver of the Jeep said he did not see Eva Barcza as she walked through a crosswalk. Eva’s daughter has been working with the group Families for Safe Streets to make New York streets safer for pedestrians. Additionally, the group wants to have automakers warn potential buyers about the dangers of driving large trucks.

Consumer Reports did some testing and found an area below the line of sight in larger trucks that is completely out of view. Jennifer Stockburger, director of operations at Consumer Reports testing center, says that “Small children are especially vulnerable to frontover crashes.” A frontover crash is when a driver hits someone in that blind spot at the very front of the vehicle. Over 80% of the fatalities between 1990 and 2019 for this type of crash took place in a truck, van, or SUV.

Consumer Reports analyzed the hood height of passenger vehicles. Since the year 2000, the hood heigh of passenger trucks has increased by 11%. Pickup trucks grew 24% heavier, and the front of some vehicles is 55 inches off the ground. But while all of these statistics are alarming, are trucks the only issue?

Big pickup trucks are not the only issue

Pickup trucks might be large, but there are many dangerous vehicles on the road other than trucks. Many cars and compact SUVs like crossovers have blind spots that inhibit drivers from maneuvering. Consumer Reports published a report back in 2019 with cars and SUVs with the best and worst visibility.

“Our findings show that, in general, sedans have better visibility than SUVs, with some exceptions,” CR reported. For example, there are many smaller cars on the list like the Chevy Spark, Toyota C-HR, Mercedes-Benz CLA, and Chevrolet Camaro. In the SUV category, the Nissan Murano, Nissan Pathfinder, and GMC Terrain made the list.

Visibility is an issue across the board for vehicles. In fact, many modern trucks are equipped with camera systems that actually make visibility better. Ford actually offers a 360-degree camera package for the trucks that don’t offer it already. It uses four cameras to stitch together an image that shows the driver 360-degrees around the truck.

But even with all of that, are we heading in the wrong direction for the safety of pedestrians and others on the road?

Where do automakers go from here?

At this point, it seems visibility is an issue across the board. The bigger trucks have bigger mirrors and other technology like 360-cameras to help assist. SUVs and smaller cars don’t have such technology unless you go straight for a Tesla. If the automotive industry continues to favor cars, trucks, and SUVs with huge blind spots, there will be serious consequences.

Even with the extra safety features like blind-spot warning and pedestrian detection, these are optional additions for the most part. Will automotive manufacturers make these features standard soon? It might be the only logical step forward.

If you’re looking for a quick SUV for daily use, the 2022 Acura MDX Type S wants to be your pick. As its name suggests, this is part of Acura’s sporty lineup of vehicles, joining the recently introduced TLX Type S. As a result, it won’t surprise you to learn that this high-riding model shares the same engine and output figures as its sedan counterpart.

In order to present this brand-new model to the world, Acura decided to debut it during this year’s Pikes Peak event by having it tow one of the competing vehicles. While this SUV looks great in photos, there is still plenty we don’t know about it.

How much power does the 2022 Acura MDX Type S have?

As far as SUVs for daily use go, the 2022 Acura MDX Type S might be one of the most fun out there. That’s because under its hood lies a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 pushing out 355-hp and 354 lb-ft of torque. One of the most interesting aspects of this powertrain is that it was developed by the same engineers that put together the engine in the NSX.

As you might imagine, this SUV features an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring and a 10-speed automatic transmission. You also get large Brembo brakes up front and a double-wishbone suspension setup as well.

As mentioned earlier, there is still plenty of mystery surrounding this brand-new model, mainly its performance figures. Thankfully, we know that it has a max towing rating of 5,000 lb, more than enough to tow your race car around. While this SUV appears like it’ll be a great sporty SUV, it is only one of many more Type S models coming in the near future.

Since the 2022 Acura MDX Type S shares components with the TLX sedan, it won’t surprise you to learn that the Japanese carmaker plans to build sporty versions of other models. Since we already have the MDX, that leaves us with the smaller RDX in the future. Based on this latest release, chances are this smaller variant will still get the same powertrain and hp figures.

Additionally, several rumors have indicated that even the NSX supercar might get a tuned-up Type S version. This would make sense when you consider that this supercar will be around at least up to the 2022 model year, says MotorTrend. Since it’s been out for a few years, a last hoorah before retirement could also make sense within the brand’s lineup.

Regardless of when they’ll arrive specifically, we know that more Type S models are certainly on the way.

As mentioned in the intro, there are still several things we don’t know about the 2022 Acura MDX Types S. The main mystery surrounds how much it’ll cost when it arrives. For context, a base model starts at $47,925. As a result, don’t be surprised if the Type S model carries a significant premium.

For example, the base TLX starts at $37,500 while the Type S starts at $52,300. As a result, we could easily be looking at an SUV that costs over $60,000. However, we’ll have to wait for official pricing info.

The aging Toyota Sequoia isn’t expected to have a full redesign until 2023. However, rumors suggest that the 2022 Toyota Sequoia could finally be getting a new face. Check out the updates that are on the way.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia could sport new looks

The possible new look of the 2022 Toyota Sequoia | Motor 1

The Toyota Sequoia that you recognize today has been around for quite some time. The current generation made its debut in 2008. But this isn’t exactly a bad thing. The aging Toyota lineup that includes the Tundra has aged pretty well.

However, rivals such as the Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe have been updated, so it’s time to play catch up. According to CarIndigo, the Sequoia isn’t being totally refreshed for 2022, but it could receive an updated front and rear.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia could have an exterior design that draws on the Toyota RAV4 with thinner headlights and taillights. It could also gain a larger, more aggressive grille with LED headlights and running lights.

We wouldn’t be surprised to see a new front and rear bumper design too. The Sequoia could gain sharper lines with new wheel designs too. Then in 2023, we will hopefully see a totally refreshed model.

What to expect with the 2022 Sequoia

With a new face, the 2022 Toyota Sequoia may rise in price by about $1,500. The 2021 model starts at about $50,400. It’s expected to carry over the same engine option, which is a 5.7-liter V8 option with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque.

The Sequoia could gain new engine options with the 2023 model that follows in the updated 2022 Toyota Tundra’s tracks. Also, rumors about a new hybrid powertrain have been circulating. We’ll have to keep you updated. The Sequoia is pretty thirsty. The 2021 model gets an EPA-estimated 13 mpg in the city and up to 17 mpg on the highway, so we hope the hybrid option does happen!

Currently, the Sequoia can tow up to 7,400 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,370. These figures may not increase until 2023. These figures are pretty on par with rivals, but a little more muscle would be exciting.

Will the 2022 Sequoia have an updated interior?

Maybe. Rumors for the 2022 Toyota Sequoia suggest that it will gain the new infotainment interface known as the Human Machine Interface. It’s expected to be much faster and to provide an improved user experience.

The Sequoia comes with a 7-inch infotainment screen, but there is a possibility that larger screen sizes will be available. The new infotainment system could receive over-the-air updates and provide Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

While the Sequoia may have new exterior looks, the structure and its size are expected to remain the same. A few of the safety features may include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring.

The 2022 Sequoia should make its appearance soon. It could be available for the fall of 2021. We will keep an eye out for more information to keep you updated as we learn more.

Dodge has made the defining cars that defined the muscle car segment for as long as the term has been around. The Dodge Charger and Challenger are still the defining muscle cars even after five decades. With the advent of the EV, Tesla has rocketed to the top of the charts for straight-line specs. Dodge is not about to sit back and let that happen. Now Dodge is talking about a new secret electric muscle car that might be the world’s fastest production car.

2018 Dodge SRT Demon | Dodge

Will the new Dodge electric muscle car be a true Tesla killer?

According to Fox, Dodge is working on an electric muscle car that means to take back the mantle of the World’s fastest production car. Currently, that record belongs to the Tesla Model S Plaid. Before the Model S Plaid, Dodge held the record with the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. The Demon’s quarter-mile record was 9.65 seconds. But, much to Dodge’s chagrin, the Tesla Model S Plaid did it in 9.23 seconds.

These two screamers could not be much more different from one another. The Tesla Model S Plaid is obviously an electric car using cutting-edge technology, while the Demon is a gas-guzzling monster from 100 years ago. Although the Demon is made of ancient technology, it is still pumping out a massive 840 hp.

What is this new secret Dodge muscle car?

Fox mentions that some unnamed sources at Dodge have been whispering about a new secret project developing an all-electric muscle car that ought to be the fastest car Dodge has ever made. Of course, not many concrete details have been released yet, but Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis did say, “electrification is inevitable in this space. It will help internal combustion engines perform significantly better and in some cases electrification all by itself.”

Dodge also still hasn’t released any dates for the next generation of the Dodge Challenger nor the Dodge Charger. These two muscle cars have had a massive surge in popularity over the past couple of years.

How will Dodge move into the future?

So much of the Dodge ethos is based on the old muscle car days and even older saying, “there’s no replacement for displacement.” While that was kind of true for a while, we have watched smaller turbocharged engines make incredible amounts of power. Hell, even the 2021 Ford Bronco has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the base powerplant.

Even more to the point, electric engines have taken displacement out of the conversation completely. In many ways, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the pinnacle of 50 years of muscle car development. The massive engine capable of enormous power but no other performance upgrades is peak classic muscle.

If Dodge is serious about its secret electric muscle car, it may have a chance yet in the battle with the Tesla Model S. Dodge has been carrying the torch for a long time. The vintage car world appreciates the nods to the old days, but the world is moving on. If Dodge wants to keep up, it is probably time to hitch its wagon to some electric horses.
