While AMG is pursuing an electric future, Mercedes-Benz’s performance division can make impressive numbers out of smaller engines. Case in point, the 2021 GLA 35. And serving as its boxier counterpart is the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35.

Being a luxury crossover, the GLB 35 has an extended list of features besides performance-related ones. But buyers can also drive the sticker price higher via optional extras. So, which are worth getting, and which are worth passing up?

What comes standard on the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35?

For 2021, the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 serves as the range-topping model in the GLB-Class lineup. The base model, the GLB 250, starts at $38,050; adding all-wheel drive costs $2000. Meanwhile, the GLB 35, which comes standard with an AMG-tuned AWD system, starts at $49,500.

The extra cash assuredly gets you extra performance. The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s 81 more hp and 37 more lb-ft than the GLB 250. And that power goes to the AWD system via an AMG-specific eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. As a result, the GLB 350 goes 0-60 mph in a claimed 5.1 seconds, 1.8 seconds faster than the 250. But it still comes with a standard stop-start system.

Besides the engine, the 2021 GLB 35 has stiffer suspension with AMG-specific springs and adaptive shock tuning. It also comes with a performance exhaust, larger brakes, an upgraded torque-vectoring system, and automatic variable-ratio steering. Plus, 19” AMG wheels, stainless-steel pedals, aluminum shift paddles, sport front seats, and a sport steering wheel. On the GLB 250, those are all part of the $2600 AMG Line Package.

On the luxury side, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 shares many of its features with the GLB 250. For example, heated side mirrors, a power liftgate, multiple USB-C outlets, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system. Both also have driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking.

However, the GLB 35 gets several of the 250’s options as standard. For instance, the AMG crossover gets 64-color adjustable ambient lighting and carbon-fiber trim. And instead of a 7” center touchscreen and digital gauge cluster, it has 10.25” ones.

What kinds of options are available?

If those standard features aren’t enough, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 has a sizable options list. Some can be added individually, while others are bundled into separate packages.

For example, the $1700 Driver Assistance Package gives the GLB 35 additional ADAS features. These include adaptive cruise control, active steering and lane-keeping assist, and an upgraded blind-spot monitoring system. Meanwhile, the $800 Premium Package adds power-folding side mirrors, auto-dimming driver-side and rearview mirrors, and keyless entry. It also lets you open and close the tailgate by lightly kicking the rear bumper.

Navigation is an individual option, but you can also get it as part of the $1295 Multimedia Package. Getting the package adds augmented-reality views to the navigation screen and speed-limit-sign recognition. And the LED lighting can be upgraded with active LED headlights and adaptive high beams as part of the $900 Exterior Lighting Package.

Besides the packages, other notable options include heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, and the blacked-out $750 AMG Night Package. The sport steering wheel can also be equipped with Nappa leather or Dinamica fabric. And there’s also the optional AMG Drive Unit. It’s a series of knobs and switches controlling the drive mode, suspension, stability control, and transmission mode.

The GLB 35 also offers various 20” and 21” wheels, a sunroof, wood trim, WiFi, a wireless charging pad, a heads-up display, and a Burmester audio system. And on top of illuminated door sills, you can equip the crossover with lights that project the Mercedes star.

How should you spec your 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35?

Picking out the options on a car is naturally up to personal taste and budget. If, for instance, you don’t like the GLB 35’s carbon-fiber trim, you can get wood trim instead. But aesthetics is one thing; practicality is another, as is budget.

I recently spent some time with a well-optioned 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 priced at $64,110 after a $1050 destination charge. And in addition to the standard features, the crossover had the following options:

  • Driver Assistance Package: $1700
  • Exterior Lighting Package: $900
  • Multimedia Package: $1295
  • AMG Night Package: $750
  • Premium Package: $800
  • SiriusXM: $460
  • Mirror Logo Projector: $110
  • Burmester audio system: $850
  • Panorama sunroof: $1500
  • Heated and ventilated front seats: $950
  • AMG Drive Unit: $400
  • AMG Performance steering wheel with Nappa leather: $400
  • 20” AMG matte-black five-spoke wheels: $1050
  • Wireless charging: $200
  • Red/black leather interior: $1450
  • Cosmos Black Metallic paint: $720
  • USB-C adapter cable: $25

Ignoring the aesthetics-related options, if I was building my own GLB 35, I’d skip on the 20” wheels. Larger wheels transmit more impact force and noise to the cabin, Autocar explains. So, although the crossover rode comfortably overall, the 20” wheels added an unwelcome sense of flintiness.

But that’s the only option that I didn’t find helpful. The AR navigation displays large arrows with street names for approaching turns, MotorAuthority notes. That’s a boon for those driving in unfamiliar areas, especially if street name signs aren’t visible. The AMG Drive Unit lets you swap between different performance settings with alacrity. Also, the Driver Assistance Package’s blind-spot monitoring upgrade lets you know if you’re about to open the door into approaching traffic. Plus, the ventilated seats were extremely helpful during the recent Chicagoland heatwave.

In terms of non-aesthetic equipment, you could build the equivalent of my loaner crossover for $58,980 before destination. Anything else is your personal cherry on top of the cake.

Is the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD a good pickup truck?

Yes, the 2021 Chevrolet 2500HD is a good pickup truck. If you want a heavy hauler that can handle nearly any gnarly job, a heavy duty pickup truck is it. The 2021 Chevrolet 2500HD is a great option for those that need more power from their diesel truck than the smaller ½ ton trucks (like the Silverado 1500) can offer.

The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is a heavy duty pickup truck with seating for up to six adults. According to Cars.com, it’s poised to compete with others like the Ford F-250 and the Ram 2500. Options include three different cabs and two bed lengths.

There is a standard gasoline-powered 401 hp 6.6 liter V8 for the 2021 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. However, for those that want even more power for heavy jobs can opt for the turbodiesel 6.6 liter V8 that generates 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. There are both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options.

The max towing capacity of the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is 14,500 lbs. The maximum payload is 3,857 lbs.

With the same engine options as the 2500HD version, the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD lends a heavier truck to even more intense hauling functions. Configured properly, the 2021 Chevy Silverado 3500HD pickup truck can tow up to 36,000 pounds. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD payload capacity is a staggering 4,481 lbs.

Overall, both of these trucks are great heavy duty pickup trucks with appealing exterior style and a number of welcome creature comforts such as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity available for smartphone connectivity. There are also quality driver assistance and safety features. For example, both forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking can be had on both the Work Truck and Custom versions.

What’s new for these Chevrolet heavy duty pickup trucks?

There is a new Carhartt edition for the LTZ 2500HD crew cab Chevy Silverado. This gives this big truck an elevated interior in terms of style. There are signature embroidered head restraints that enhance the black and brown two-tone leather trim.

There is new towing tech like a jackknife alert and a trailer-length indicator. Plus, there is a new camera that gives drivers an enhanced view of the cargo bed. If you’ve ever backed up a fifth-wheel trailer for hitching, you know how helpful this feature must be. There are also new editions apart from the Carhart Edition trim.

According to Car and Driver, buyers may like the new Midnight Edition and the Z71 Sport Edition. There is also the Z71 Chrome Edition that’s a little more flashy. Overall, these trucks are heavy haulers with style. While it may be a little weird that two Chevrolet heavy duty pickup trucks are the most popular pickup trucks according to Cars.com, it’s no secret why consumers love them so much.

The 2022 Kia Telluride has officially arrived, bringing with it some much-welcomed upgrades. Over the last few years, the Telluride has become a sales success, even outselling the Sorento by a considerable margin despite being on the market for a short while. As you might imagine, this midsize SUV isn’t due for a full refresh yet. This just means that the 2022 model gets subtle tweaks over massive upgrades.

According to Kia’s latest release, the new 2022 model still has a few surprises up its sleeve. For starters, you’ll get more standard safety features. However, you will have to pay slightly more for this SUV moving forward. Let’s break down the trim levels and see how it stacks up.

What new features does the 2022 Kia Telluride have?

2022 Telluride | Kia

Just a few days ago, we saw leaked images of what appeared to be the 2022 Kia Telluride caught parked outdoors without any camo covering up its upgrades. The first change you’ll notice is that there is a brand-new Kia logo throughout. This is something we had already seen the K5 adopt, so it was only a matter of time until the Telluride followed suit.

Aside from just the new logo, this 2022 model gets a brand-new mesh grille up front. While it’s a subtle upgrade, it refreshes the front end a little without needing a complete facelift. While this is a major change from a branding perspective, you likely won’t see a massive difference once you see 2021 and 2022 models on the road alongside one another.

Fortunately, there are a couple of extra reasons why you might want to wait for the 2022 model instead of snatching up a 2021.

You get extra tech as standard

As expected, the 2022 Kia Telluride still offers up a plethora of standard tech. However, the big differentiator here is that features that were previously reserved for top trim levels have now made it to the lower ones. More superficially, the 10.25-inch central infotainment screen. Previously, customers interested in the lower LX and S trim levels got stuck with an eight-inch screen. However, now the larger display comes as standard.

Aside from the larger screen, the base trim levels of the 2022 Kia Telluride also get automatic temperature control, highway driving assist, and smart cruise control. While these aren’t massive changes by any means, you could easily save by not needing to opt for the higher trim levels to get these tech features. Unfortunately, there is a small price bump.

It’s true. The 2022 Kia Telluride will cost you slightly more. However, the amount varies depending on which trim level you decide to go with. For example, the base LX FWD starts at $32,790, marking a $600 increase over the 2021 model. The same goes for the S FWD, which starts at $35,290, also reflecting a $600 increase. If you opt for the higher trim levels, you’ll get a smaller price bump. The EX FWD now starts at $37,790, reflecting a $200 increase. The same goes for the top SX FWD, which starts at $42,690, also with a $200 increase.

Regardless of which trim level you end up choosing, you can’t go wrong with the added tech and updated styling.

2021 is already shaping up to be a great year for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, which has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ award, the highest safety award a vehicle can receive from the organization. Mercedes-Benz, of course, has a long history of emphasis on safety, which makes it no surprise that four of their vehicles make an appearance on this IIHS list.

How did the Mercedes-Benz E-Class score in safety tests?

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class earns top marks from the IIHS thanks to its ratings of at least “good” on six different tests of crashworthiness: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

To get the coveted “+” added to the award, a vehicle must also be available with a front crash prevention system rated advanced or superior in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. Its headlights must also be rated “good” or “acceptable” across all trims and packages. Thus, the E-Class vehicles getting the bonus “+” label are those featuring Mercedes’ Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function.

The E-Class scored very highly on nearly all safety tests, taking home the top rating of “good” in the vast majority of categories. These included categories such as front and rear passenger injury measures, driver injury measures, and structure and safety cage.

Where the E-Class fell slightly short, however, was in the area of passenger restraints and dummy kinematics, in which it achieved a slightly lower rating of “Acceptable.” IIHS explains that this rating was due to the fact that the test dummy’s head moved too far to the right in a simulated crash, indicating the potential for a neck injury.

What is Mercedes’ Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic Function?

Mercedes’ Active Brake Assist with Cross Traffic Function is an example of a relatively recent innovation in the automotive industry: automatic emergency braking.

MotorTrend explains that these sorts of systems automatically engage the brakes whenever a potential collision is detected, in the event that the driver doesn’t do so in time. While all automatic emergency braking systems can detect the presence of other vehicles, only certain vehicles, such as some members of the Mercedes E-Class, can also detect the presence of pedestrians in order to brake when needed.

The E-Class models featuring Cross-Traffic Function achieved superior ratings, thanks to their ability to detect pedestrians on the side of the road. Models without that function, however, achieved just a basic rating, due to their unreliability in detecting pedestrians.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class safety features don’t end there

With all the safety features and technological advantages that come with the 2021 Mercedes E-Class, it’s no wonder that Car and Driver included it on its Editors’ Choice List. In addition to the braking and crash test ratings mentioned above, the E-Class features anti-lock brakes, as well as driving aids such as a lane-departure warning to help keep you on the road and lane-keeping assist to make sure you don’t drift into the path of another vehicle.

What’s more, Mercedes-Benz’s adaptive cruise control features automatically adjusts your speed to the flow of traffic, reducing the potential for human error that has often existed with traditional cruise control.

Blind-spot assist is also an important safety feature. It uses a series of cameras and sensors to monitor spaces up to 10 ft behind and beside your vehicle. When another vehicle is detected in the blind spot area while you’re traveling over 18 mph, a red triangle will appear in your driver’s side mirror, alerting you to the potential danger. And as if that’s not enough, stability control is there to prevent rollovers in the event it’s needed.

All in all, the Mercedes E-Class has earned its place at the top of the 2021 list of safe vehicles. Consumers in the market for a top-end vehicle full of safety options will not be disappointed in the 2021 E-Class.
