Consumer Reports: Worst Deals on New Cars Right Now
There is a lot of turmoil in the industry right now with the semiconductor chip drama, which has caused an unusually unbalanced automotive market. If you are looking for a deal on new cars, trucks, or SUVs, Consumer Reports suggests avoiding some of the vehicles on this list.
Looking for a deal on a new car? Not the Kia Telluride
The 2021 Kia Telluride is one of the most sought-after vehicles on the market right now. Due to the demand, many dealerships have hiked the price up. Motor1 reported a while back that Rimrock Auto Group out in Montana is taking an aggressive sales strategy. On a note posted on a 2021 Kia Telluride SX SUV window, the dealership noted it was the “most sought-after vehicle in the world.”
The hand-written note goes on to explain that the Telluride is the most highly-rated SUV on the market. “But you already know that. That’s why you’re here today.” The Kia in question was listed on the website for a final price of $78,995. The retail price is listed at $53,505. That’s a markup of over $25,490 without any of the tax or other fees included. And guess what? It sold. In other places, Consumer Reports says the Telluride is around 19% over MSRP.
Consumer Reports likes the Ram 2500, but not the price
The 2021 Ram 2500 is listed 17% over MSRP in many places. Since these pickup trucks are highly customizable, the price ranges from $35,270 to $67,385. It has good ratings for reliability and owner satisfaction from Consumer Reports, but the markup is real.
For the lower-end 2021 Ram 2500 Tradesman Regular Cab 8’ Box 2WD, you can expect to pay an extra $5,000 on top of the MSRP. That puts you at $35,000 to start and a final price of around $40,891 after the markup. However, these trucks sometimes go on sale around the holidays, so keep your eyes peeled for the 4th of July.
The ever-popular new car, the Ford Bronco Sport
The Ford Bronco is one of the most anticipated releases this year. The Ford Bronco Sport is no different. Right now, with all of the delays and issues industry-wide with production, the Bronco is even harder to come by than usual. You can expect to pay about 15% over MSRP for the Bronco Sport right now. Consumer Reports found the baby Bronco fairly capable, but it is one of the harder SUVs to find.
The Bronco Sport is dubbed the baby Bronco and is priced around $27,215 to $38,160. With a 15% markup, you can anticipate paying around $33,500 for this SUV before any taxes and fees.
Another truck option, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
Another popular truck is the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Right now, some of these trucks are 15% over MSRP. It has solid reliability ratings and owner-reported ratings from Consumer Reports which bode well for the truck, but not your wallet. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Custom Double Cab Standard Bed 4WD starts at $42,500, but you can anticipate paying an extra $6,000 right now. That leaves you just under $50,000 for the Silverado 2500 HD.
While these are not the worst deals in the world, there are certainly better deals out there. With the 4th of July around the corner, it might be a good idea to wait a bit for a big sale. And if the car, truck, or SUV you wanted is on this list, be patient. A good deal on new cars might show up eventually once the demand slows down.
