First Look: Restyled 2022 Chevy Silverado
Chevy just unveiled the restyled 2022 Silverado. Those not thrilled about the fascia and interior may or may not be satisfied with the changes. The new ZR2 off-road version, SuperCruise, and other changes will start popping into dealerships early next year.
GM sells more Silverado pickups than any other vehicle it makes
This is arguably the most important vehicle that General Motors sells. In the US it is the best-selling vehicle GM makes. But production numbers still lag behind the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500.
What may or may not pull the Silverado’s numbers up will be an all-electric version. But it is not expected before 2023. So the new, wider fascia and grille design along with the updated interior will have to suffice. But don’t forget the ZR2.
For 2022 the Silverado gets the rugged ZR2 off-road model
This will be the first time the ZR2 option will land on a Silverado. Chevy has been missing its own Ford Raptor and Ram TRX. To this point, the Z71 off-road option was the big dog. And it or the Trail Boss represent 60-percent of all Silverado sales. So most buyers are looking for that rugged, off-road capability.
All Silverado trim packages will feature the redesigned interior, except base models. The new interior includes a wide instrument panel and a better center console. Electric shift control is available on most Silverado trims.
There is also a 13.4-inch diagonal touch screen along with a new 12.3-inch diagonal digital instrument cluster. And it is also configurable. Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play are all built into the system. They all function with either Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
GM’s SuperCruise will also be a Silverado option
For the first time in a Chevy truck will be the SuperCruise driver-assist feature. It will be offered on the High Country models. The GMC Sierra will also have SuperCruise. It includes Lane Change on Demand and Automatic Lane Change when not towing a trailer.
With 20-percent more torque the 2.7-liter Turbo High-Output engine is the base powerplant. It is capable of towing 9,600 pounds. With the optional Duramax three-liter Turbo-Diesel engine towing capacity increases to 13,300 pounds.
In 2021 sales so far are up 8.3-percent over last year
For the first half of 2021 Chevy has sold 286,410 Silverados. That’s an increase of 8.3-percent. So it is on the way to hit high numbers if the microchip shortage doesn’t scuttle production for the last half of the year.
“We’ve been selling the heck out of the current truck and we’ve got some great improvements here,” Steve Carlisle, president of GM North America, told Automotive News. “Our goal here is to continue to dominate with the pickups and Silverado in particular.”
