Is the 2021 Genesis G70 Quicker Than the Acura TLX Type S in a Drag Race?
Sporty family sedans are seemingly making a comeback. Cars like the Acura TLX Type S have shed new light on the possibility of driving a practical car that can haul a family of five while putting a smile on the driver’s face with its power. The same goes for other rivals in the segment like the 2021 Genesis G70, which is powerfully practical as well. But which of these two cars is quicker when accelerating hard in a straight line?
2021 Genesis G70 vs Acura TLX Type S
If you’re unfamiliar with the 2021 Genesis G70, just know that it comes with two different engine options: a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 engine. As you can guess, the smaller engine is made for fuel efficiency but doesn’t sacrifice much in power. However, if you want the big guns, then you need to opt for the larger engine.
That twin-turbo V6 puts out a stout 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that routes power to all four wheels. We recently had a Genesis G70 as a test car and it was surprisingly smooth and powerful. So it’s no surprise that the editors at Car and Driver were able to get the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds.
On the other hand, the 2021 Acura TLX Type S is a powerhouse in its own right. Under the hood is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 355 hp and 354 lb-ft of torque and is matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The TLX also uses the automaker’s Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system for maximum grip. As such, the editors at Car and Driver were able to get the TLX Type S up to 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.9 seconds.
As we can see, it should be a close match-up between the two sedans.
Which sport sedan wins in a drag race?
Throttle House recently pitted the 2021 Acura TLX Type S and the Genesis G70 in a three-way drag race with a Kia Stinger GT. So far, we know that the Kia Stinger muscled out the TLX Type S, but how did the Genesis G70 do?
It was a close race, between the two Korean cars anyway. In Throttle House’s video, it’s clear that the Acura TLX’s heavier weight didn’t help much, nor did its built-in “launch control” feature. The Genesis G70 was able to beat it off the line and even bested it during the roll race.
Is the Genesis G70 the best sport sedan to buy?
Considering the amount of power and practicality that’s loaded in the Genesis G70, we would say that it’s one of the best values currently in the market. In fact, it costs a few thousand dollars less than its Acura rival ($51,445 vs $54,645), so you know you’re getting your money’s worth with that price tag.
However, that doesn’t mean that the TLX Type S is a slouch by any means. It’s still a fun and practical sports sedan that’s bound to be reliable. Unless you plan to get in a lot of stoplight drag races during your normal commutes, the Acura TLX Type S will give you what you need. Just don’t race any G70s or Kia Stingers with it.
