Kelley Blue Book: 5 Best Off-Road Trucks in 2021

by Gabrielle DeSantis

Kelley Blue Book knows that real off-roading requires. Some of the features include larger tires, skid plates, proper suspension, locking differentials, and an electric winch. Are you looking for some of the best off-road trucks on the market this year? Read on for options from Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet.

The 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor is one of the best off-road trucks

The Ford Ranger Tremor is one of Kelley Blue Book’s best off-road trucks | Ford

The 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor is a mid-size truck with almost everything necessary for offroading, Kelley Blue Book says. The new Tremor package adds a lot of great equipment like taller suspension, 32-inch tires, locking rear differential, and a broader stance. This will run you about $6,000 and can be added to a few different options. The added 10 inches adds a lot more ground clearance.

This package doesn’t deter from the on-road capabilities, either. The ride is improved, and the powertrain is still spunky enough to make for a fun ride and one of the best off-road trucks.

Starting Price: $40,995 (XLT) | Rating: 4.4

The 2021 Ram TRX is coming for the Raptor as one of the best off-road trucks

The 2021 Ram TRX might actually be a competitor against the Ford Raptor. It has a supercharged V8 that makes both on-road and off-road fun. The TRX also offers full-time four-wheel drive, which Kelley Blue Book praised.

“If you are ready to speed through sand washes in a purpose-built truck, you have a new full-size pickup to add to your wish list. The supercharged 6.2-liter 702-horsepower engine in the Ram 1500 TRX is a beast, far surpassing the Ford Raptor’s 450.”

Allyson Harwood | Kelley Blue Book

The TRX has an upgraded frame, long-travel suspension that is 13-inches in the front and 12-inches in the back, Bilstein E2 dampers, and 35-inch tires. It also has an electronic locking differential on the back, but the front does not have any traction. KBB suggested it might be the “ultimate mud running truck.”

Starting Price: $71,690 | Rating: 4.5

Best off-road trucks: the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor

The 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor is a full-size truck with light-duty capabilities, but it does off-roading well. KBB suggests that the SuperCrew short-bed model has more wheel travel and upgraded racing shocks. It offers optional 37-inch tires and a 450 hp twin-turbo V6. A bigger supercharged V8 might be on the way sometime soon. The 2021 Raptor also has a variety of off-roading modes that make it one of the best off-road trucks for whatever adventure you might find.

Starting Price: $64,145 | Rating: 4.4

The 2021 Ram 2500 Power Wagon is heavy-duty

The 2021 Ram 2500 Power Wagon is one of the more heavy-duty options on the list. Kelly Blue Book suggests this truck can handle work and play. It has upgraded suspension, a 360-degree camera system, and a synthetic-line winch. The 6.4L V8 is standard and is best for slow-paced off-roading adventures. KBB thinks other trucks might better suit high-speed adventures.

Starting Price: $54,535 | Rating: 4.5

Don’t overlook the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2

Kelley Blue Book praised the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 for a variety of reasons. As far as mid-size trucks go, the ZR2 does it all. It has an added two inches of suspension and a wider track that allows for wheel travel. Multimatic dampers offer high-speed damping control. The rear and front locking differentials and aggressive tires make this truck better for slow off-roading too. The 2021 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 comes with a 3.6L gas V6 or a diesel option that gets 20 mpg combined, which makes it one of the best off-road trucks.

Starting Price: $42,600 | Rating: 4.1

While the best off-road trucks might depend on your favorite location or plans, the trucks on this list have a lot to offer. Kelley Blue Book wants you to adventure safer and smarter during your off-roading escapades, so don’t test your limits in a regular truck.
