Consumer Reports gives the Cayenne better ratings, but the XC90 is still a good choice.

Both the 2021 Porsche Cayenne and 2021 Volvo XC90 have similar road test scores, though the Cayenne’s is slightly better. With an 87 to the Volvo’s 84, the Cayenne’s advantage is very small.

Braking is pretty good in the Cayenne. It scores a 4/5 and can brake from 60 mph on dry pavement in 131 feet. On wet pavement that becomes 140 feet. The Cayenne’s headlights only score a 3/5.
On the other hand, Consumer Reports gives the 2021 Volvo XC90 scores a very good 4/5 for its acceleration. It can reach 0 to 60 in 7.7 seconds. Its transmission scores a 5/5. Routine and emergency handling both receive a decent 3/5. The Volvo XC90’s max avoidance speed is 53 mph.
The Volvo XC90 gets a perfect 5/5 for its braking. It can brake from 60 mph on dry pavement in 126 feet and 137 feet on wet pavement. The XC90’s headlights only score a 3/5.
The Porsche Cayenne is quieter
As far as comfort, the 2021 Porsche Cayenne gets a reasonable 3/5 for its ride. It’s quiet: it scores a perfect 5 for its noise. Both front and rear seat comfort also get perfect scores. Consumer Reports gives the 2021 Volvo XC90 only a 2/5 for its predicted reliability. Volvo XC90 owners rated the owner satisfaction a 3/5. It scores a 75 for predicted driving experience, an 85 for comfort, a 93 for styling, and a 48 for value. 66% of XC90 owners would buy their XC90 again.
Although the Porsche Cayenne’s score is better than the Volvo XC90 at an 81 to a 62, the Volvo has a lot going for it. Once you’ve determined what your priorities are in your next SUV, you might find that the XC90 has what you need. Or you may agree with Consumer Reports that the 2021 Porsche Cayenne is the better SUV.
